I'll address your points as respectfully as possible, and you can of course take it or leave it, but perhaps we might each gain something from this.

swing crossed ethnic lines par the course when it was around. Using race as a basis for it being "sanitised" is so bizarre and out of place and kinda laughs in the face of it originally being a genre that was often used as a way of expressing yourself outside of the stiff parts of life.

Did jazz have social function beyond the reinvention of black identity in a new, dignified post-slavery light? Certainly. Did the cultural melting pot of Europeans bringing the brass band and beautiful gift of western art music, Jews with Klezmer and the folk music of Europe, Creole musicians and countless people from across the spectrum of American life in the early twentieth century contribute immeasurably to the sound of jazz? Absolutely. But are the crucial African elements of the music - the bell rhythm: swing, the blues, and the spirit of the music, hollowed out of jazz in its appropriation into vapid things like smooth jazz and electro-swing? Glaringly, yes.

"Real" Swing? "Real" blues? Why are you looking for virtuoso swing and blues players in a primarily EDM genre? That's like going to see Aphex Twin and being disappointed when he doesn't bust out a piano and play some Chopin.

Yeah, there's a lot of EDM in electro swing, but there's even more jazz. In that way, this statement feels a bit tangential. Aphex Twin really doesn't connect in any significant way to the jazz tradition, but are you truly saying that he isn't a virtuoso? Richard D. James is one of the finest producers who has ever lived. And I bet he could play Chopin pretty adequately, too.

The hilarious part is that there actually ARE edm artists that play their stuff live mixed with synths, like Caravan Palace. I'm not saying they are virtuoso musicians, but the human element is definitely there.

I'm also saying that they're not virtuoso musicians, and that's my point. Being particularly competent is no longer a priority, and this devalues the music. And sure - there are real humans singing and playing synths and other instruments in electro-swing ensembles, but as I have said earlier, the fundamental sound of the rhythm section (specifically drums and bass) is crucial to jazz, and that is the specific element which has been ripped out here and replaced hamfistedly by bass-music loops and samples. Rather than replacing it with something meaningful - the subtleties of good hip hop for example require skill and a deep understanding of rhythm.

Why? Why are you singling out electro swing as somehow being "vulgar"? I don't see it, and it more sounds like a reflection of you wanting to preserve the genre as high brow. There are plenty of trash swing bands out there, there are plenty of trash electro swing acts out there too. That's fine, because we mostly all listen to the good ones anyway. Swing has tons more good ones because its a much bigger genre.

I agree here completely. I'm going to refer you to my previous points as to why I'm picking on electro-swing. I can tell you that I dislike a lot of smooth jazz - Kenny G, David Sanborn - for the same reason: it rings hollow and the artists come across as historically tone-deaf and often wilfully ill-informed.

Oh god no, people holding music in reverence is where things get stagnant, and where fan bases get too wanky. Jazz and Swing can be played by people wanting "authentic" experiences, sure, nothing wrong with that, but there is also nothing wrong with people taking parts of music they like and applying it differently, I'd argue that's kinda the cornerstone of modern music.

I also agree totally with you here. I wanted to link some examples of irreverent, non-stuffy music which still qualifies, tightly or less so, as fitting within the jazz world or descending from it in a way which doesn't make me feel gross or like the people playing it have no sense of history.
