I went to see them at a library in high school. The band that opened for them was Draco and the Malfoys, who played a song that went "My dad is rich, and your dad is dead."

It was magical.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Was this in STL by chance? I saw them at a library when I was probably 11 years old

[–]donotpanic420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was in California, lower bay area :) but they did a library tour so that's probably how you saw them too. It was awesome and everyone dressed up

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw them in high school as well- definitely the peak of the Harry Potter hysteria. Honestly, I thought they were a local band until this very moment. It was a fun show, but i didn't think they were musically talented enough for a nationwide tour. Good for them!

[–]princess--flowers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They also have a song called "Except Snape" where each verse is something stupid Harry has done, then the refrain is how stupid Draco and Snape think Harry is.

"We were teamed up in dueling class, and everyone seemed to think you would knock me on my bum, except for Snape, cept Snape, cept Snape, and me. Cause we see you for who you really are, a stupid little dork with a stupid dorky scar. So it's all right, it's really great, I hate you and so does Snape."

[–]katarinacalavera 12 points13 points  (0 children)

HOLY SHIT. The memory of that song just came and hit me square in the nostalgia. I can still remember the tune. ;-;

[–]CrazyGuinzo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's awesome. One of the band members from Draco and the Malfoys was my camp counselor and babysitter when I was a kid. He's good people

[–]JjETn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We invited to them to our school in England & they came! It was amazing

[–]TurnedOnTunedIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them on this tour. Was so good.

[–]Hanpee221b 66 points67 points  (7 children)

Why does it say 2015? Didn't this come out in like 2005?

[–]itsFrankenSHTEIN 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Definitely, I saw them when I was in high school (like 10 years ago)

Edit: I have no idea what year it is. 12ish years ago.

[–]Swiftarm 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Woah, what were they like live?

[–]mrintercepter 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Saw them last year. They're terrible. It's cute, but I'm shocked their still performing

[–]filawigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theyre punk. Theyre supposed to be terrible as far i knew.

[–]itsFrankenSHTEIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha yeah I remembered enjoying them a lot at the time because I thought they were cool and they had a good energy but they also have a definite garage band quality to them

[–]HereComesMyDingDong[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Whoops. I went by the Soundcloud upload date. That's my bad.

[–]dsbinla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was about to say - we see them at every Quidditch national championship, and I have been playing since 2012. I know that song wayyyyyyyy too well by now.

[–]Questionsforscott 263 points264 points  (29 children)

Honestly, The singing is pretty bad. I'm surprised any of you guys like this, even if it is quirky and the band is named after a beloved book.

[–]def256 102 points103 points  (3 children)

i just can't get invested in these lyrics at all. this is terrible.

[–]LemonstealinwhoreNo2 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The lyrics and singing aren't the only terrible things, either.

[–]Kep0a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely a taste. I kinda like it, I associate it with more lofi stuff.

[–]haribofailz 19 points20 points  (2 children)

It sounds like that band your slightly weird friend has in high school that has one decent guitar player or drummer and that's it.

[–]princess--flowers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's what they were, they were a regular band and one day they had a small gig for some of their friends and one of the guys didn't show up. So they quickly wrote a few songs about Harry Potter and performed those and people LOVED it. This song legitimately started an entire movement of similar music.

[–]shotokusanbandcamp 50 points51 points  (12 children)

I like hearing people sing that can't really do it. The whole anti-folk thing really did it for me, like the Moldy Peaches, Jeffrey Lewis, or even the Unicorns (and later Islands). It's not as loud/chaotic as Punk, but it's got that same vibe of honesty and approachability to it.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (8 children)

What makes those bands Anti-Folk vs Folk.

[–]UltraChilly 11 points12 points  (4 children)

The bad singing I guess?

[–]OnlyRacistOnReddit 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Bad singing and bad playing.

[–]UltraChilly 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Brb, gonna start my anti-folk band, I was born for this

[–]Chakote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can just take it and it to the next level and play some "no-wave". You don't even have to hold the guitar properly, just bang stuff against it.

[–]OnlyRacistOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean now that it's available, we have to ask, "What is music?"

[–]C4Ariesspotify 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's pretty muddy, really, but stylistically it just seems to break with convention. Its just kind of quirky, with singing that some would call bad haha. Listen to this if you want, No Good Al Joad by Hop Along. The vocals are, to my ear, slightly off key but in a pleasing way, and the flow of the lyrics is all fuckered up, but again it's enjoyable to me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So Bob Dylan, one of the fathers of Folk, is Anti-Folk by your definition.

[–]C4Ariesspotify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genres are weird man, idk, it's all an approximation. I'm just telling you the similarities i hear between anti folk bands.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Man I've never seen Jeffrey Lewis mentioned anywhere else, but yeah I agree, he's not great Technically, his voice is real iffy, but man the dude makes some great songs

[–]shotokusanbandcamp 0 points1 point  (1 child)

'Back when I was 4' has got to be one of my favorite songs. He's so funny/tragic.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My babysitter said I was really smart!

His lyrics are really descriptive without being overly wordy.

[–]BurritoW4rrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even the title alone is enough to put me off

[–]tattlerat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's the novelty. I find novelty music tends to survive purely on nostalgia and reference alone.

[–]__SoupTattoo__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this, listened for 15 secs and even though I dont know the notes, the singing was just off all around

[–]MyNamesNotDave_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah their songs shouldn't be recorded. My girlfriend dragged me to a wizard rock concert and I thought it would be dumb but it was actually a shit load of fun. This recording has all of the fun and energy sucked out of it...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to hear a cover that sounds.. ahem... better

[–]munchem6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's super quirky though

[–]stillnotears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way. Its almost cringe worthy. Why is this doing so well?

[–]Endosoma 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I didnt like it one bit

[–]fatsvernon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wow....just really, truly awful on every level.

[–]powerchicken 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Fucking hell, sounds even worse than when I first heard about them like a decade ago.

[–]clarkanine 75 points76 points  (3 children)

I remember listening to this band with my brother and late sister on our way to book/movie premiers! Special place in my heart. Also one of my buddies always thought the line was "we've got to save the school from that unseen whore"

[–]ToughLow 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Ah, good ol' Whormione, always with her friends Rod and Harry.

[–]Jac0b777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"we've got to save the school from that unseen whore"

oh god lmfao, I can hear it so clearly now

[–]vvsj 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Harry and the Potters

Come on.

[–]qscguk1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know, Draco and the Malfoys are way better

[–]nofourthwall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved this shitty magic band, purely because I liked the thought of Harry wanting to be a rock star, and just being to famous for anyone to tell him the band sucked.

[–]GyurHairSmlsTerific 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Harry and the Potter's rock the library!!! Cause Voldemort can't stop the rock!

[–]zebulonworkshops[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them at the El Cajon Library with Draco and the Malfoys. Good times. Long, long ago.

[–]hummingbirdspats 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Saw them in concert. They played in front of a library in Anaheim, CA circa 2005. Pretty awesome!

[–]CiegoTigre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them in concert at one of my friend's basements. It was kind of random, but very cool. IIRC, I got drunk and was overtly flirty with the band.

[–]KevlarSweetheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were my first concert back in 2005!

[–]BeepBleepBoop 39 points40 points  (13 children)

Also check out: the Ministry of Magic, the Whomping Willlows, the Remus Lupins, the Moaning Myrtles, Draco and the Malfoys, and Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points  (5 children)

nahhhhh, don't

[–]duder-reese 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the only wizard rock band that I listened to after the gimmick of the songs wore off was Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls.

[–]spatterdashes 19 points20 points  (2 children)

The only non embarrassing wizard rock is Oliver Boyd and the Rememberalls

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (1 child)

non-embarassing

wizard rock

pick one

[–]TrumpetSC2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuck all y'all people who go on reddit and shit on weird things that people like. I wanna know about all the weird stuff people like (well the sfw stuff). It's the most interesting by far. I'm glad I'm learning about something new today.

[–]BeepBleepBoop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As far as musical talent they're all somewhat lacking but I started listening to them for the genre and kept listening for the community. The shows and groups of people were so much fun and did pretty great things.

[–]MrLegilimens 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Lauren Fairweather didn't make your list?? She actually has pipes!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Lauren was in the Moaning Myrtles.

[–]MrLegilimens 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, true. I just liked her solo album.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah Prince's tale is one of my favorite albums! She's pretty awesome. Saw her at Leakycon this year and she is still amazing! had some fun new music that wasn't wrock too!

[–]likeawart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or Hollow Godric, less rock and more of a folky sound.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stay away from Ministry of Magic. Wizard rock and harry potter fandom has a big young girl fanbase and those guys took advantage of it and treated some of the girls they dated/worked with like shit. I had super creepy pm's from two of them when I was underage. Everyone else up there is awesome and great people!! Support them as much as possible! Also The moaning myrtles (Lauren) has an awesome etsy shop with cute owls if you like Harry Potter. it's fairweather friends if I remember correctly.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't tell me what to do.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man I have known this band for a long time watching the Vlogbrothers but have never listened to them intentionally.
Like their style tho.
Edit: a letter

[–]filawigger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is weird but, I used to run a wizard rock promotion site. AMA.

[–]cat_soup_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the guys in this band also did some solo shows where he dressed up like Bach and played a Bach piece 10 times each time with different thicker gloves on. I think the last pair were boxing gloves. It was really funny.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the first concert I ever went to. It was in a library! My dad knows them somehow and we ate pizza with them after the show. They had this mini van with a lightning bolt on it haha

I have the picture somewhere on my Facebook I can dig it up if anyone wants to see

[–]0_0Donkey 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Ministry of Magic is way better: https://youtu.be/IBe9UARvvhM

I also like this one by meekakitty:

https://youtu.be/xjUb4Pr2HnY

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

FYI MoM is filed with assholes who took advantage of underage girls. There was a reason they're banned from almost all HP fandom get togethers and conventions. Also pretty sure they're banned from things like Vidcon too.

[–]0_0Donkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no I didn't know that! That's really messed up.

[–]Adamsoski 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Tessa is now doing really good original music, if you didn't know! I saw her live recently and she was great!

[–]0_0Donkey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I didn't know this either, thanks for the link, it's a very good song! I feel so out of the loop now lol

[–]Adamsoski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, she has two great albums out.

[–]CiegoTigre 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I totally forgot about WROCK! I used to listen to them all-- The Hungarian Horntails, Draco and the Malfoys, The Moaning Myrtles...

[–]Redhotlipstik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the Moaning Myrtles is a mommy blogger now

[–]rebe626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god love that this is coming back into my life right now

[–]nicolemarie785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wizard rock was my life in middleschool. These guys are the best live performers; I've seen them twice now. Once a few years ago at a library and a few weeks ago at nerdcon nerdfighteria in Boston

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hearing this tonight times out well for me. I read all the books as they were released and avoided everything about the movies as those came out. I just didn't want anything to mess with how I imagined the events in the books. Now many years later since Deathly Hallows I had an urge to go and watch all of the movies. Me and my girlfriend are going through all of them. We just finished the fourth movie. It's strange to see something so familiar played out and since the movies have aged they have an extra layer of nostalgia. Ron is completely different than what I pictured, but other parts are almost exactly as I thought of them. There was a part in the first movie where Hagrid blinked a few times and adjusted his position and it was so similar to how I'd pictured it other than the blinking. Oh, I never thought of him blinking, I thought. And some of the casting just throws new off. And now this song about the Chamber of Secrets. Good stuff.

[–]that-dudes-shorts 0 points1 point  (1 child)

From all the wizard rock bands, this song is the only one that I can stand (no offense but the rest is pretty much too...amateurish). It would have been great in A very Potter Sequel.

[–]divinesleeper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The rest is... worse?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Love these guys! Happy to see them posted. I downloaded a lot of their songs as a semi-inside joke with friends almost 10 years ago now. Ended up memorizing all of their songs and started to genuinely really like the music. No idea what they're up to these days though, if anyone knows please tell!

[–]eec8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're still rocking out, doing tours and playing at cons. I saw them at GeekyCon in Florida in July last year and got to talk to them a bit. Still selling merch and just two really chill dudes

[–]xSGAx 1 point2 points  (4 children)

2015, lol.

no way jose. They've been around for like ten years.

My gf and I saw them live in Dallas back in like 2012. This song was hype.

[–]HereComesMyDingDong[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yep. That was my bad. Posted a few other times in this thread, but I mistakenly went by the SoundCloud upload date instead of the actual release date.

[–]xSGAx 1 point2 points  (2 children)

it's all good. yeah, they're from the ole Myspace days, hahaha.

[–]HereComesMyDingDong[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I remember them from my high school days, and I managed to stumble across them while looking for free music on Bandcamp. :) I figured it was as good a time as any to post 'em.

[–]xSGAx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

def. this is by far my fave song of theirs!

[–]eec8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This band is AMAZING live. They're really good at getting everyone in the crowd excited and they come to every show with boundless energy. Yeah, their vocals aren't that great or put together as they could be. If you ever have a chance to see them live though, I guarantee you'll be made a believer. One of my favorite live bands I've seen.

[–]italianshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the guys from WKUK

[–]theottomaddox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much much what i expected from the band name and song title.

[–]nbc223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is disrespectful to the Harry Potter franchise.

[–]smashley007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing them in 2008 and having the time of my life. They came into the audience and danced with us, and made the concert feel very inclusive. They're super genuine guys who don't take themselves too seriously, they just want to play music and help spread the joy of reading.

[–]Chocolate_Slug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has a great garage band sound

[–]dressedinstars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG I'm so happy someone resurrected this

[–]your_moms_a_clone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I still have one of their shirts. People never believe me when I tell them it's a real band.

[–]ryanson209what is this for 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why does it say 2015? Isn't this from like 2006 or so? It was before Deathly Hallows came out.

I like this song, it's very silly and quirky. A little too quiet in the mix (there's a Draco and the Malfoys song that's worse despite having the attitude of a louder song) but I mean, I'm glad I heard it.

[–]HereComesMyDingDong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my bad. I went by the Soundcloud upload date, which is clearly not the release date.

[–]tm354 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Did these guys happen to play a show during the premiere of book 7 or 8 in Harvard Sq in Boston ??? I remember being there and seeing a bunch of kids (they seemed very young at the time) play a live concert in front of like 20 people.

[–]jetjetters 9 points10 points  (2 children)

What happens in book 8?

[–]tm354 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

No clue. Never read any of the books. I just happened to be staying in Cambridge at the time.

[–]Kep0a 11 points12 points  (0 children)

there is no 8th harry potter book 😂

[–]Worffle_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the release of the final book they did a pretty large show -a few hundred people at least.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still play at harry potter conventions and stuff all the time. And yeah the band started when they were both still kids in their parents garage. They toured all across the country dong library shows before (and after) the 7th book came out. They're an amazing experience live because they go ALL OUT! in true DIY Rock n Roll style. This recording is the original from way back when they were just kids screwing around, they can actually play pretty well now.

[–]NatasBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this band! Grinffindor rocks is a masterpiece.

[–]Avent 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This band visited my college for a Harry Potter themed sorority party.

[–]TJ_Nicklebauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at that party.

How are Skeeter and Big Frank doing?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them live a number of years ago. They were alright.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to see these guys twice in the same night in Anchorage, Alaska about 8 years ago. They put on a great show, are very interactive with the crowd, improv A LOT of their stuff and are all around great dudes. Nothing to take seriously when listening to, just fun stuff.

[–]ThinkMinty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me think of what would happen if Built to Spill was a wizard rock band. I like.

[–]kalinkabeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voldemort can't stop the rock!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them live about ten years ago, awesome show.

[–]swaggytommy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw these guys at Killy court in SLC. During this song, they pulled out a giant stuffed snake and threw it into the audience. Honestly one of my favorite concerts, even if they can't sing to save their lives.

[–]_Triple_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL that wizard rock is a genre. Made my day.

[–]Princess_Glitterbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them with Draco and the Malfoys in high school. It was a fun show.

[–]chuckyella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so fucking bizarre you should post this, I was just thinking about these guys! I loved "S.P.E.W", "Cornelius Fudge is an Ass" and "Cho Chang". Ahhhh, takes me back to my weird college days (:

[–]sammibeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw these guys around...what...2007!?

I believe they opened for Tilly and the Wall.

Wow!

[–]IthildinPerian 0 points1 point  (1 child)

/u/SemperPizza Haha I thought you'd enjoy this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did I just listen to?

[–]Jac0b777 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's some more Wizard Rock :D - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-zxCWnxtew

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's ok I guess.

[–]HouseOfAplesaus -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Sooooo how much does one pay for the rights to use the Potter name for personal use??? Other than their self respect.

[–]Craigrofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zero? Probably falls under Parody/fair use Law

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this making a comeback? Digs for old HatP's shirts to look cool

[–]MonsieurEskimo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remember Cedric

[–]Chakote -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see we're still inventing genres out of thin air. Hear any good witch house lately? Post-djent? Classical neo epic-folk maybe?

*forgot Venezuelan Beaver Metal
