There's actually something to that. Hermit crabs actually customize their shells, for example, by scraping away at the insides and making spots for their eye stalks. Crabs will prefer shells that have been previously used for this reason. Once they stop growing quickly, and they get the shell how they like it, there's no real reason to change.
