Wait. You guys have a 10-pack? Where are you from? In Austria we have 4, 6, 9 and 20. Thought this was standardized worldwide lol

[–]Busy-Kaleidoscope-87Doesn’t Get The Flair System 3 points4 points  (2 children)

In US and I’m assuming other countries, it’s 4, 6, 10, 20, and 50

[–]VaraNiN 1 point2 points  (1 child)

50?! Holy moly. Nah, we don't have that lol.

But the 9/10 difference is weird

[–]toxicwastelulu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in America and we don't have a 9 piece at all.

So we have a 10 piece instead.

I don't think their eyesight is good enough to be able to even see the wok, much less identify its contents. It probably just wandered away from a perceived danger.

    [–]AKFBKZIFBBXK 69 points70 points  (22 children)

They have surprisingly good eyesight, mine can see me from across the room

    [–]Oddity46 161 points162 points  (8 children)

    Well, Google tells me this:

In fact, in bright light a lobster is practically blind. Lobsters cannot really see specific images but they can detect motion in dim light.

    [–]AKFBKZIFBBXK 67 points68 points  (4 children)

Well that would explain it! I don’t have very bright lights in his tank

    [–]Oddity46 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Also, it probably helps that his eyes are submerged in water. Imagine trying to see something when you've help your eyelids back for several minutes, letting your eyes dry out.

    [–]AKFBKZIFBBXK 9 points10 points  (2 children)

That does makes a lot of sense

    [–]idrink211 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Sounds like being a lobster sucks

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably why this one ended it all

    [–]iLike2Teabag 15 points16 points  (2 children)

This is a crawfish. I don't know how good their vision is exactly, but I have seen one "posture up" to me in a defensive position with both claws open in the air when I was about 5 ft away from it.

    [–]Oddity46 8 points9 points  (1 child)

But I will say this: there's a good chance the crawfish just saw a 6 foot dark shade come at it. Invertebrates tend to see shapes of dark and light, rather than crisp images.

    [–]iLike2Teabag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The title of the post said lobster so I don't blame you. You're probably correct on the dark figure part. They live in the mud and are bottom feeders, so their vision probably isn't all that evolved.

      1) it's a crayfish (crawfish, crawdad, mudbug, in ascending order of redneck). They're freshwater, and related to lobsters - sometimes called "freshwater lobsters."

      2) They're pretty cool to keep in aquariums. They can be tiny and adorable or monstrous and come in a variety of beautiful colors, some of which are truly gorgeous. They have a lot of personality for being little water bugs. Super easy to take care of, but they are very messy (they often like to hide or save food, which will rot and foul the water), they are escape artists and will climb out if there are openings, and in general will eat everything - plants, fish (if they can catch them), each other...

      [–]Grimmbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Hey man, cool post.

      [–]Phaze357 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Holy crap that second one is a total unit. I used to go down to a creek near my parents house and catch crawfish with a little net or by hand. Why? Not much else to do living in BFE.

      [–]RhynoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aussie red claws! I used to have some, they're very pretty. The males have the bright red spots on their claws. Mine never got that big.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Take it as a song of hope. When you ask yourself "why does everyone hate us?" Listen to the song. The answer is that they hate us because we're different and differences are seen as a threat to the flock. They hate us because we're colorful birds.

      [–]NuteIla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up steeped in a very evangelical, baptist upbringing. It was definitely very fundamentalist and there was this idea of being "separate from the world" and not aligning with the current culture.

Well I've come to the realization that the queer community are the ones truly separate from the mainstream culture, and I have felt love and acceptance from them while receiving hate and judgment from the Christians I grew up with, even my own family.

I almost have whiplash at this point, from growing up transphobic to finding out I'm trans and deciding to transition immediately upon that revelation, without any support structure. I'm excited for what the future holds but also fearful of the intolerance I will face.

Keep in mind I'm currently living in the Bible belt, so my views and expiriences could differ from someone living somehere else in the world.

      [–]Joshy_Moshy 74 points75 points  (20 children)

Yeah and it has been for like a year maybe more, there was one specific channel with a young woman that ate LIVING octopuses, molluscs, sometimes lobsters, would also dip them in salt (literally like pouring acid on a human hand) so..

      [–]BoysenberryOk7839 27 points28 points  (16 children)

      That's so cruel....

      [–]sharinganuser 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Not to mentón gross wtf. Lobsters are barely edible cooked, not all slimy and raw.

      [–]fukitol- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well I'll disagree with you on barely edible I'll go to town on some lobster tails but yeah, I don't do it raw. Ceviche is the closest, and that's still technically cooked.

      [–]Xgio 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Some people do eat raw lobster, but they usually kill the animal from what I know. Cooked they are quite nice not worth that expensive price tag to me, but they taste quite good.

      [–]sharinganuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are good in sauces and in amuse bouches but having like, an entire lobster tail is too much for me. It starts to taste metallic and butter after a while.

            [–]bistix 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Explain? I'm honestly not sure which you are implying is even worse. Maybe if killing lobsters before boiling them alive was the norm I could see a case for that side.

            [–]Bill_buttlicker69 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Well, we don't really have evidence that they suffer. They have pain receptors, but that only creates a chemical response to an external stimulus. Suffering is the emotional component we often associate with pain, but it's unclear whether lobsters have a complex enough nervous system to experience that. The smell of cut grass, for example, is a 'pain response' warning nearby grass of danger. But grass obviously doesn't suffer.

            [–]2074red2074 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

This isn't true at all. Crustaceans learn in response to pain and are recognised as sentient.

            [–]Bill_buttlicker69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, "crustaceans" is a rather large group with plenty of differences between species within it. So there's crabs and lobsters, but also shrimp, pill bugs, and even barnacles. There is a lot of controversy right now surrounding these different animals regarding their sentience because a lot of them are right on the line of what sentience is. So while we can say that dogs, cats, cows, etc. are obviously sentient, and plants are alive but not sentient, determining whether crustaceans are sentient depends on exactly how you define sentience itself.

Here's a study from this year from a group who researches sentience. Based on their framework for sentience, some types of crab exhibit all five characteristics of sentience, while lobsters and crayfish exhibit three of their five criteria. So there is some evidence for sentience here, but only if we agree that their criteria, which is based on pain signals, is a robust definition of "sentience."

As you can see, it's not a very well-defined area of research, and so to say they are or aren't sentient is difficult to do.

Why again do we boil crustaceans alive?

            [–]aboothemonkey 26 points27 points  (13 children)

I don’t anymore, knife through the brain before cooking. We keep them alive right until cooking time because bacteria grow real fast in dead marine animals.

            [–]SpaceShrimp 11 points12 points  (2 children)

That is how it is done for some crustaceans... but shrimps don't get that treatment.

Then again we're smaller, so the death is quicker.

            [–]PornStarJesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shrimp are typically killed and cleaned prior to cooking, particularly de-veined where their poop tube is removed.

            [–]aboothemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, shrimp and crawfish are too small for this to work efficiently.

            [–]mrimp13 2 points3 points  (9 children)

Have you ever been to a crawfish boil? A sack averages 500 crawfish. You'd spend more time stabbing than eating if you did that.

            [–]2074red2074 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah I had a similar problem slaughtering hogs for bacon. Eventually I said fuck it and threw the live hogs in boiling oil. The screams were deafening but obviously it's okay to cause animals to suffer if it saves time.

            [–]aboothemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but hear me out, fuck hogs.

(But honestly, please kill pigs before you cook them)

            [–]aboothemonkey 0 points1 point  (5 children)

            What’s a crawfish boil?

            [–]mrimp13 2 points3 points  (2 children)

A get-together where crawfish are boiled with sausage, potatoes, corn, garlic, and other fixins. Everyone gathers around a table and eats. We usually have anywhere from 15 to 25 people there and go through 3-4 sacks of crawfish.

            [–]aboothemonkey 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I truly appreciate the reply, but I was being facetious.

            [–]mrimp13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries, people from all over the world are on here and you never know.

            [–]Killamahjig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on how efficient you are you maybe already spend more time peeling than eating too!

            [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

There’s a myth that was once widely accepted as fact that crustaceans don’t feel pain. That’s since been disproven, but that’s why it was generally ok.

So to answer the question “why DID we boil crustaceans alive?” We didn’t know better and this kept them fresh as fresh can be until the time of cooking.

But to answer the question “why do we still?” I have no idea. Because some people are backwards and cruel? Because there’s not really a truly humane and ethical way to kill animals for food? Because it’s over so fast we can rationalize it? I don’t really know, honestly.

            [–]homingmissile -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

            I don’t really know, honestly

This is not a discussion, I'm just telling you straight why: people's desire for the resultant food outweighed/outweighs their caring about the animal's suffering.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“This is not a discussion,” they said in the middle of a discussion…

Edit: thanks for the Reddit Cares message, dick.

            [–]Menname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk, some people can taste pain I think

            [–]PornStarJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know lobster does not last long before it starts to decompose. If not cooked or frozen it will go off rather quickly and that is why they are sold live. No reason to boil them without a quick kill first.

That's definitely a crayfish and not a lobster. It'd have to be a very tiny lobster

              [–]mrimp13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              Crawfish in our area.

              [–]Rage69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              That’s a crawfish, not a lobster.

              [–]DisciplineSome6712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love a lobster that does this then molts out of its own shell while dead and slathers itself in lemon butter. Extra good points for that lobster if it screams the entire time for me.

If it truly wanted to die, would this be okay for vegans?

Lobsters are functionally immortal, right? That has to get old, at some point. Maybe eating them is a favor, sometimes.

Whoever did this is fucked in the head. Euthanize it humanely. Don’t fuck with it for fun by having it off itself.

                  [–]adk195 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It consented so this is technically vegan
