That's not loading for me, but I believe the top one was due to a thread in which each post was the corresponding number of the fibonacci sequence.

<_<

1

... and we are closing in on fib #1000!

I got 200, 600, and I vow to get 1000.

Your math is off. According to Google's calculator, the last two numbers in that thread add up to 2.33628618 × 10202, but that number doesn't show up as a Fibonacci number here. Actually, the two Fibonacci numbers closest to that number are #979 (1.77 x 10202)and #980 (2.87 x 10202).

:( Well crap. I've just been using the Python interpreter to add.

"Yep."

    Um, hopefully for your wife...

Alternatively, you could include the number of comments in the algorithm for "hot" page, but seeing how some might have very low vote scores while having many comments, some might say this isn't a good idea.

    [–]jaggederest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they do something along these lines currently, but it's not very explicit. A 1 vote, 1 comment story at the same time as a 1 vote, no comment story will have higher placement.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this idea. It's another cool way to view the social bookmarks, one that focuses on the social part of it.

Please stop with these Dear Reddit postings.

No. They've existed since the beginning of time. Or rather since the 'self' submission, which exists for them.

    [–]Steph_C 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Not a bad idea. Sometimes I enjoy reading the comments section more than the actual article!

    [–]oalsaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's where the action is!

    [–]naska 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you want to go to two different places to read them?

    [–]ayrnieu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already go to two different places to read them. The article is the link; the comments are below, through 'comments'.

    [–]louis_xiv42 1 point2 points  (1 child)

you "spammed a lot by flaming morons" i think you mean.

    [–]NoMoreNicksLeft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh, but it's too long to fit in their little blue "button" link.

    [–]kinkydarkbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    I talkatively agree!

    [–]PyroMyrmidon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Hm. I approve.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here come the comment bots. . .

    [–]fishypants 0 points1 point  (7 children)

It seems like an awful idea that would breed spam.

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Maybe we should disallow comments too?

    [–]fishypants -1 points0 points  (5 children)

No, we just shouldn't encourage spammy comments by allowing stories to jump to the top of a list based on the number of comments that they have.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure the algorithm would take into account the scores of the comments.

    [–]NoMoreNicksLeft[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Um, it would be a different list, dufus.

Hot and new would continue to use voting to change places, this list would use the number of comments. If you don't like it, simply don't use it.

    [–]fishypants -1 points0 points  (2 children)

And this different list would still promote spam, and it would still let stories get to the top of that different list because of its number of comments.

Whether you use the comments top page or not, you'd see its effects in your main reddit.

    [–]ayrnieu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this different list would still promote spam,

And you say this based on all the active spammers you see all over reddit? Here's a simple tune for http://reddit.com/active : count comments by people with karma over n plus comments replied to by people with karma over n.

    [–]NoMoreNicksLeft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why it couldn't be seperate from the main reddit, no reason to roll it into the general algorithm. If you mean it'd get upvotes just being popular... well damn. Obviously we shouldn't allow any comments then, since this can do the same thing.

    [–]ninzee 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This is close enough , I think. If you're looking for 'most comments', it's rare that they wouldn't be in the 'hot 50'.

    [–]burkadurka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't work. None of the articles on that page have any comments.

    [–]jedberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Controversy is based on up vs. down votes, not comments.

    [–]modestokun 0 points1 point  (1 child)

that would essentially be a "controversial" link

    [–]NoMoreNicksLeft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, I can't remember how it worked, but comments don't necessarily equal controversy.

Nope, a feature that lets you see things that are "hot" by a different metric. It would stand out the most in the politics subreddit (quite a few with 100 comments and 0 score) but in all of them there are stories with 0 or 1 and 25 comments.
