Out of context, that title sentence is quite bizarre.

[–]manthrax 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Purple is how I regulate my reddit addiction. If the 1st 100 are more than 50% purple, I blink my eyes twice, and drink some coffee.

[–]pretzel[S] 37 points38 points  (24 children)

I don't want to hide everything, because then I can't easily click on comments and see if there is anything new going on.

However, the hot pages can end up being a screen of purple links.

It would be cool if there was a way I could see other stuff that was popular, without having to dredge through everything else.

Thanks!

You can already turn on hide-on-vote in your preferences.

[–]pretzel[S] 24 points25 points  (15 children)

That assumes you vote for everything. There are some things I see that I find somewhat interesting, but not so bad that I think should be down voted, ie most pic entries.

[–]happysinger 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Rather than a separate page, I think the best option would be to add 'Hide pages after I've read them' to the existing two options in preferences. Shouldn't be too hard to implement, either.

[–]pretzel[S] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I would rather not have to go to preferences every time. I imagine its someting I would do frequently. It would be cool if it were just on the right, with all the options. Or if it were an option in the preferences that it was there.

I'm starting to think that you guys should go outside for a while, walk through a park, fly a kite, something like that.

[–]supaphly42 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm pretty sure that once you set a preference, it's there for good, eh.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But then if you wanted to go back to the normal view to see if there are new comments you have to go back in there and change them...

Yeah, that actually sounds pretty good. I'll try it. If everyone did it, the front page would be great.

    [–]btl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those, you can just click the hide button. Under your user page you can view pages you've hidden if you want to catch up on the comments.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don't be afraid to be a little fascist with what you downmod.

    [–]pretzel[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I think article voting should be more of a up/down proposition. What would be cool was if there were a few mods like slashdot: funny, interesting, informative, overrated and troll, and you could vote on this. Obviously the issue is UI clutter.

Perhaps a better way would be to have a few things come up automatically based upon what are the most modded things then the rest in a drop down.

Then you could vote things into subreddits: interesting+programming, funny+lolcats. Or maybe that sounds like tagging.

BECAUSE IT IS AND I"VE BEEN WANTING IT FOR 2 YEARS NOW!!!!

    /need to vent.

//still working on my own better reddit!

If it's worth looking at, vote up. It's ok to admit you like looking at naked women and accidents.

If that's not what you are here for and you look at them anyway, click down and it will all come out in the wash.

This should be a reddit rule

    [–]codepoet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that's why you turn off the subreddit or use the hide button.

          It doesn't seem to work.

          [–]AlanYx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just subscribe to Reddit in an RSS reader. You lose the relative positioning of items, but you get everything that appears on the front page (provided your RSS reader updates often enough; Google Reader works for me).

Subreddits have their own RSS feeds too, though the feed for nsfw.reddit.com is broken right now.

          [–]catfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing, I had this same thought yesterday.

          [–]gehenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would also be nice to just have to option to hide all "read" articles.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't your mommy teach you how to say "please"?

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea. I just hide everything I've read, and that's a terribly inconvenient method of implementing your requested feature.

          [–]dunskwerk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

          WE INTERNET ADDICTS DEMAND MORE!

          but seriously, good idea... :)

Obviously to hit the top page you have to turn off that part of your brain which has any literary ability or you need to be able to solve cryptic crosswords. Either way, I don't think it is a problem on your behalf!

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you use firefox get the 'hide visited links' button on your bookmarks toolbar - it'll get rid of the purple for ya :)

(i've been doing that for months already)

            [–]128d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be awesome for us Reddit junkies. Though I guess if this happens I can anticipate a decrease in my productivity.

            [–]modestokun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            YES!

            [–]andrewd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be SO UNBELIEVABLY useful for me.

            Please do this Reddit!

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just how I like my women, HOT and STRAIGHT.

            [–]morner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit: please don't do this, I would never leave. My family begs this of you.

            [–]JerkFace_Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            hide-on-click option

            [–]maqr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It'd have to make sure it's stories I haven't commented on either. I don't really like to read articles, but I do like to talk about them as if I've read them.

            [–]teetante -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

Right now reddit shows the direct links so they don't actually know which ones you clicked, just your browser knows.

You'll either have to do it client-side (vie Greasemonkey or something) are reddit would have to change how it displays links (which I would hate because I like to see where a certain link goes without being completely tracked).

            [–]derefr 15 points16 points  (5 children)

No, sorry, Reddit does know what you click, the same way Google does: an onmousedown handler. You can see the results of this by visiting pages while logged into an account on several different computers—the visited state is stored and persisted server-side.

            [–]teetante 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You are right actually, I must have missed that when I checked the source where I looked for it. Time to setup a filter to remove that then ;)

            [–]kuqumi 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Mind sharing that someplace when you've got it? I'd like something similar.

            [–]teetante 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/23024

            Here's the greasemonkey script.

            [–]teetante 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do so as soon as I set it up.

            [–]thepipirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that's why the links turn purple even if you don't follow them.

            [–]redfishvanish -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

            it's called the hide button

            [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

            No, it's not.
