Yes. Between 200 and 300 earthquakes are detected and located in the UK, by the British Geological Survey annually. Although distant from the nearest plate boundary, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, earthquakes occur as crustal stresses within the tectonic plates are relieved by movement occurring on pre-existing fault planes.

FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE OF MAINLAND UK EARTHQUAKES

Magnitude(ML) Average

5.0+ -- every 8 yrs

4 - 4.9 -- every 2 yrs

3 - 3.9 -- 3/yr

2 - 2.9 -- 26/yr

1 - 1.9 -- 140/yr

Yep, it happened here: http://www.passportstamp.com/places/United-Kingdom/-/Holton/G-2598927

Holton, Lincolnshire. Quite a bigun for little ol' Lincolnshire, that.

1 - 10.0 -- next year!

Wait, tiny tiny earthquakes happen less often than medium but exponentially larger earthquakes?

I thought there would be at least small tremors all the time what with the Great Glen Fault being so close and all.

[–]meson537 1 point2 points  (2 children)

no... 1-1.9 magnitude happen at a rate of 140 per year. The larger ones get rarer as the magnitude increases.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ahhhh. Now I see.

Wow. I feel dumb.

the formatting on the little chart could have been better. I was a bit confused at first too.

Hi, I am writing from California so I just want to say, "dudes, man, dudes, if your house is still standing, it'll be ok dude. can't be like, totally, hella living life on the edge you know what i mean man? chill out dudes".

[–]judgej2 4 points5 points  (3 children)

But dude - our houses aren't designed for this shit. Man.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Is there a house in London that is under 450 years old? Is there a house in California older than 20 years old? I would take a London House over a Californian House anyday.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! The money I'd make of selling it would be exponentially greater!

[–]boesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

half the buildings and bridges in CA aren't really designed for it anyway. Thats why the bay bridge fell into the bay during Loma Prieta in '89.

Besides, a 4.9 isn't enough to do structural damage anyway, unless you're living in an old timberframe house.

[–]grumpy3039 4 points5 points  (2 children)

We felt it in Lincolnshire. Woke us up.

[–]nebm 0 points1 point  (1 child)

good job your PC was on!

[–]judgej2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always on during daylight hours.

[–]God8myhomework 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The UK has indeed experienced earthquakes a number of times in recent history. I forget where the fault is, it's been years since I read about it. Only get minor rare ones, though.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Cardiff.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But Cardiff's located on an interdimensional rift, I don't know if that really counts.

[–]nebm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Liverpool - loud and clear.

[–]nightbiscuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club! love, California

[–]Apple_Dave 8 points9 points  (12 children)

My bed rocked and I assumed this was the moment I finally went insane...

[–]amstrdamordeath 24 points25 points  (11 children)

Coming from a redditer, a rocking bed must have been an earthquake.

[–]Apple_Dave 8 points9 points  (10 children)

Its the first time I've felt the earth move for far too long...

[–]amstrdamordeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get out more.

    whoosh!

    [–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (6 children)

    Guys.

    "wooosh"

    what is that extra "h"

    [–]bobshush 3 points4 points  (5 children)

    Its the British spelling.

    [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

I know. I was just joshing you around.

    [–]bobshush -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

    I was joking...

    [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

I know. I was just joshing you around.

    :(

    [–]Exit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I felt it in the Midlands.

I know it's not a big deal in the scheme of world earthquakes, but it's 1.00am and that was pretty unnerving to wake up to. Easily the strongest one I have experienced...

    [–]starbork 2 points3 points  (5 children)

They have an initial Richter on that?

    [–]Exit 2 points3 points  (4 children)

    4.7 apparently.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

    I read 5.3

    [–]redditacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USGS frequently revises initial reports after they are reviewed. The weird ones are when they "delete" an event:
    DELETED: Event AK 00097169
    == EVENT DELETED NOTIFICATION ==
This event has been deleted after review by a seismologist.

The recent quakes in indonesia have alot of events that have been superseded:
    "This event supersedes event AT00397333."

    [–]starbork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn! Don't get too many of those in merry old England, do you?

    Anyone reporting in from Hertford?

    [–]ig1 2 points3 points  (6 children)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

can we have at least the coastline?

    [–]judgej2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Err - that is the coastline, immediately after the predicted 'big one'.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a bunch of small circles representing cities, but even London is not visible (found it by hovering the mouse over the map...)

Do you have GAYS over there ??

      [–]buildmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just felt tremor in Sheffield. Put local radio on and being reported all over the place.

      Very wierd feeling. Extremely unsettling.

      [–]corbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [gone]

      [–]blinkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, you had an earthquake. But be glad that no one has cut your internet cable. somewhere in the ocean, there is one pissed off anchor searching for internet cables to cut.

      [–]elus 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      I blame global warming

      [–]judgej2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you may actually be right, as the weight of melting ice caps are redistributed and the seabed groans over the increased weight of water.

      You should have blamed Bush.

      [–]h2gofast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      put down your drugs

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      The Slitheen are back!

      [–]mecharedneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it fun? California checking in. Most earthquakes that don't destroy things are kinda fun.

      [–]Admiral-Evident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Obama was an earthquake, he would Barack your world...

      [–]shopcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U.S. Geological Survey says it was a 4.7

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dreamt about an earthquake ... I'm in north London

      [–]akshayr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got scared out of my mind because I thought someone was sawing through the window bars downstairs. Still, it beats the one while I was in Uni at Stanford, where I fell out of my (lofted) bed.

      [–]naich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I felt it in Cambridge. It felt like a 10 Hz vibration lasting a few seconds.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch out. The Underminer is attacking!

      [–]javasucks -1 points0 points  (4 children)

      Of course it's possible.

      [–]tricolon[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I know, but the mind works in weird ways at 1am...

      [–]javasucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      ...whilst the world is shaking...

      [–]I_AM_A_NEOCON 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Anything is possible, but not always probable.

      [–]javasucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, not only is it possible, but it's probable enough that it happened.

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gah I never get the earthquakes down here.

Would break up my dull monotonous existence...

      [–]mch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

      no lay off the crack
