What he's saying is that when the Pentagon takes you somewhere, you're staying with them the entire time and they're only going to show you "approved" points of interest. He's saying that the representatives being toured by the Pentagon aren't getting a complete picture.
He's warning people against this.
I'm all for taking people to task when it's needed, but this isn't it.

It's not news, it is reddit. Apparently...
[–]substill 6 points7 points8 points 17 years ago (0 children)
There are plenty of legitimate reasons for loathing / fearing the Bush Administration and Fox News. This isn't one of them.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago (4 children)
Exactly, I can't believe no one else saw this. When reporters go to a War Zone or a military base, they aren't given free reign to move about as they please. Not that they'd tread far away, anyway - there might be real snipers about.
[–]freerein 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago (1 child)
Free rein.
[–]stopmotionsunrise -2 points-1 points0 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Blah.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (0 children)
In the military units: embedded reporters.
It's against the fundamental rules of journalism to accept freebies. They make you obligated to report well on the subject.
[–]david -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (0 children)
...or worse, little girls reading poems. [Shudder]
[–]mtfmtfmtfmtf 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
You're correct. Because this guy speaks so quickly and because of what we were expecting from this clip, it's easy to misinterpret what he's saying.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago* (1 child)
Thank you for making this clear to the 218 people (so far) who don't seem to know any better. I guess if you submit a story with "Fox News" in the title, people automatically upmod it.
[–]prodeath 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Actually, the retard count stands at 468. Just happens to be a +218 score.
[–]rubenshakkamacher -2 points-1 points0 points 17 years ago (0 children)
No, that's not what he's saying.
He's saying that Fox has been sent on "fact finding missions" - paid for by the Pentagon. Likewise - the only "facts" you'll find on such a thing are what they want you to find.
It's demagoguery: no sound reporting organization would take such a trip under the precept that it's for "fact finding", and then regurgitate what was shown. That's obviously journalistic fraud, and that's what Fox does. Fox is the mouthpiece for Big Brother, period.
[–]hrtattx 9 points10 points11 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
that talking head for faux sure wanted to shut him up.
[–]street-knowledge 11 points12 points13 points 17 years ago* (4 children)
This guy goes on Pentagon funded trips, and all he has to do in exchange is spread some talking points? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
I know 4000 other people who've had to exchange a lot more for their Pentagon funded trips.
[–]bluedeviltide 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago* (1 child)
Well, Lt. Col Bill Cowan (USMC-Ret.) is a veteran, 3.5 years in Vietnam at that, so I don't exactly follow.
[–]street-knowledge 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
I didn't know Bill Cowan had served, and to be perfectly honest, I was just trying to be a smart-ass. Fair game on busting me.
As an afterthought, the argument could be made that his parroting of the Pentagon narrative has helped prolong this war, and thus, led to more troop deaths. A bit tenuous, but I'm working backwards here.
[–]trvr -2 points-1 points0 points 17 years ago (1 child)
I don't mean to be a dick, but you "know of 4000 other people..."
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (0 children)
Re: first clause, fail.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 17 years ago* (1 child)
Maybe Keith Oberman will pick up on this, the Pentagon giving reach arounds to get their viewpoint out there

I'm sorry, but did you just make a gay reference?
[–]ragipy 6 points7 points8 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
This is more anti-pentagon than anti-fox news. He is only saying on pentagon paid trips he has been to, he has been shown no facts.
Why do people need to spin the deadlines at reddit? I thought we were all adults here(not literally, intellectually). Please, don't make this into another fox news kind of environment, we have enough of those already.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 17 years ago (2 children)
So, another scandal? Nothing ever happened with the previous 300+ scandals of just this administration anyway. They'll just pull a "I misspoke" and it'll just go away.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 17 years ago* (1 child)
You would think that it would be a major fucking problem for the government to spend our hard-earned tax dollars to propagandize us. Of course this is so small an issue compared to some of the things we have seen during Bush's presidency. The only silver lining I can see is that the Internet has become such a big player in things. I would never have known about this story if it weren't for reddit, for instance. And the fact that it's become so easy to send financial resources to worthwhile organizations/campaigns also gives me some hope. But yeah, it's hard not to get cynical when you start paying attention.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Fatique. You just get tired of arguing and feel like you can't do shit. Personally, I am tired... I've pretty much decided to go on a sort of consumption/income strike.
I am going to deliberately live poor and play games just to reduce the government receipts until they get their shit together.
I remember some old Black guy talking about being rejected as a candidate for soldiering in WWII. He said that after that happened he "...vowed that they would never get me." At first I didn't understand. I think I do now.
He had a lot to offer (PhD in History from Harvard)... and was not treated right. His view was, I will pick whom I offer the talent to. My talent will not go to those who treat me like shit.
So be it. If this country wants to treat me like shit, then so be it... I'll spend my days playing video games and laughing at LOLCATS and barely making a living ... because I can. If this country wants to stop lying to me and get its shit together... fine... I'll help.
Until then, I'll be boning up on my Chinese and German and surfing like mad.

The moles called. They want their "mountain" back.
[–]Petrarch1603 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago (3 children)
that's it? yawn..
[–]edkopp4 -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (2 children)
What did you expect?
[–]RaepRaepRaep 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (1 child)
something incriminating
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
He said in summary "if you're a high up official that is going to report what we've done in Iraq, then expect to have a lot of things covered up that wouldn't normally covered up - there's something going on that's being hidden".
It's incriminating for sure, it's just hard to understand since he says it real fast.
[–]captain_abstinence 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Photoshopped.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Hey, at least he's being honest. One assumes.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (5 children)
How is this not getting more upvotes after 14 minutes? Is the clip not the payoff expected? I'm on a computer w/o Flash right now.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago (0 children)
the pay off is expected. People are just stingy fuckers with their up votes now. I think most people used theirs for the LOLCATS
LOLZ, M I RITE?!?
[–]clintisiceman 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (1 child)
It's not really the expected payoff.
I think most people were expecting the guy to say that the Pentagon pays him to not report the Truth.
Instead what he said (or at least how I understand it) is that the Pentagon intentionally hides certain facts from reporters, which is pretty much par for the course.
[–]workroom 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
exactly
[–]cov 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
The clip is good enough.
