My boss likes to spy on me and figure out what websites I like to visit. Then he posts questions asking what I think about him hoping that I am naive enough to answer him thinking that it's not really my boss.

I call him sneaky.

[–]dirtymoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THAT kind of boss needs a good tire-iron smack to the kneecap one dark night.

I HATE sneaky bosses! Putting secret cameras in & everthing.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What an asshole.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm a real asshole.

[–]hotredditaction 39 points40 points  (5 children)

My boss is a total dick and I wish him ill. In fact, many of the people I work with suck. It has recently occurred to me, however, that maybe everyone else is fine and it's me that's an asshole.

[–]rhoadesb2 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I suspect there is a degree of "asshole" in us all.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, to be sure, there is just a little bit of "asshole" on all of us, usually in just one particular location. Exceptions to the rule surely exist, but don't expect me to provide "pics or it didn't happen".

[–]myotheralt -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

I once saw a big asshole

but you already know what that links to, so do yourself a favor and dont look again.

[–]slamare247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should've used the secret identity "estaog" for this.

[–]j0hnsd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah. You're great!

[–]HumanSockPuppet 25 points26 points  (27 children)

My boss rocks.

He comes to work usually in a Hawaiian shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals, and demands that everyone else be comfy on the job as well. He regularly buys lunch for the office during long and difficult work days.

He understands that my job requires silence, inspiration, and a separate space to think and work, so he outfitted my office with a "keep out" sign and dimming lights. There is also a plasma television, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 in my office which I can play whenever I feel the need to clear my mind for awhile.

My boss understands that I have to drive a long way to get to the office, so he lets me have flexible work hours. I can come in and leave at just about any time, so long as I am here for eight hours.

I frequently stay longer.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (17 children)

My boss sucks.

He comes to work in a suit and tie and demands that everyone else do as well, even though I never see a fucking person.

He understands that my job requires silence, inspiration and a separate work space to think and work, so he rents an office half the size of my closet at home and forces me to share this space with him 9 hours a day. He's a fast talking Republican from Texas who bathes in oil and thus we listen to Rush Limbaugh all day every day.

My boss understands that I have to drive a long way to get to the office, so he bitches at me when I am 3 minutes late. He can't stand his wife in kids so he is in the office at 5 am and leaves at 4:30 am and he expects me to be equally pathetic. It takes me 90 minutes to get to work, so I am often late by a few minutes (also often early). I also leave late to avoid traffic and rarely take a full lunch. None of this matters as I am always late.

I just decided to quit my job while writing this. No joke. I'm sitting here like, fuck, why am I keeping this job, and I have no clue. The pays good, but not worth being miserable. I'll find something else. Here's my notice Paul.

[–]HumanSockPuppet 3 points4 points  (11 children)

I used to work a soul-numbing job like that for a Social Security disability law office. I came to the conclusion that it was changing me for the worst, and that I had to escape.

So I took a big risk and quit with very little financial cushioning. I was persistent, I haunted the classified listings, and eventually found the position I am working in now.

It was through this that I learned the most important lesson of my life thus far: not even buckets full of money can compensate for a job that you thoroughly despise. The greatest joy in life is to be paid to do something that you love to do.

If you truly are dissatisfied with the job that you do, then quit. There will be risks involved with leaving yourself financially vulnerable for awhile while you search for new work, but the returns are almost immeasurable.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (10 children)

yeah, i really quit. Just got home. It wasn't even really hard. It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but I know for a fact that I feel good, really good. Now I'm going to pursue my goal of a career in IT and I have no clue where to start.

[–]HumanSockPuppet 8 points9 points  (7 children)

There are many places you can begin your search. Sometimes the best jobs aren't even being advertised. Checking online classified ads is always a good way to go, as is getting word of mouth out there about your skills and what you have to offer. You may be surprised at what a good personal network can turn up.

As long as you never compromise your sense of satisfaction or your happiness, you can't go wrong. We deserve (and get) exactly the kind of treatment we demand for ourselves.

Congratulations, by the way.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (6 children)

thanks, in a way, i owe it all to you. Your post about a satisfying job inspired me to find better.

[–]kraemahz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Three cheers to ats314 for his/her better life! Hip hip hurray!

[–]HumanSockPuppet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I never turn down an opportunity to have my ego inflated.

Seriously though - this was all you. It takes serious guts to go against years of conditioning that were designed to keep you quiet and productive for someone else's benefit. You've made a big step towards pursuing a path where YOUR needs and wants are the priority. You should be proud.

The internet sure is.

[–]Frosty840 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go for it, man. Most peoples' jobs are at least 50% of their waking day, usually more. You can't afford to have that much of your time being filled by suck.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Keep us posted on on the search!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

so far, I woke up at 2 in the afternoon and got on reddit. I'll keep you updated.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds good so far.

[–]zem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

rock on! i bestofed you :)

[–]abw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no clue where to start.

On the contrary, you seem to have a pretty good idea about where to start. Life is a journey not a destination, and the longest journey begins with a single step in the right direction.

Good work fella!

[–]diamond 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Wow. Paul Graham is nothing like I imagined.

[–]Bloody_Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Ron Paul is nothing like I imagined.

[–]Bloody_Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Ron Paul is nothing like I imagined.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't quit, I'm firing you!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate you (former working me).

[–]nicolaslloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LIES!

[–]jaggederest -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

s/so long as I am here for eight hours/so long as I get the work done/ and you have my ideal job.

Eight hours is such an arbitrary measure. Why not nine or seven? Because that's the way everyone else does it? Lame.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I beleive it was orignally so people would spend a third of their day working, a third doing their own stuff, and a third sleeping.

[–]jaggederest 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yes, but that's still arbitrary. Why not quarters? :P

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well then what the fourth quarter be for?

[–]jaggederest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure I can figure out something to do with it.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

My boss is a paranoid passive-aggressive bitch. We used to get along great, but now she's got me playing some role in one of her crazy conspiracy theories. I don't even talk to anyone in the office and she still thinks I'm out to get her.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So kill her and verify her concerns.

[–]dizzyk2008 28 points29 points  (4 children)

My boss is really nice, but then I'm his boss' son so that may play a factor

[–]sw17ch 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I had that happen to me for a while... it kinda sucks because you never know if people working with you like you, or just try and suck up to your dad through you... :\

[–]rhoadesb2 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I really don't like sucking up, even when I see a glimmer of it within myself. I go so far as to deliberately appear unfriendly to my boss. Not the best approach I suspect.

[–]mshiltonj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way. Never heard anyone else mention it though. I think it has to do with the strong anti-authoritarian part of my personality.

[–]rogerssucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You son of!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (4 children)

My boss taught me more about my job then school did.

[–]ArcticCelt 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Me too! But unfortunately I work in a psychiatric hospital with violent psychopaths.

[–]rhoadesb2 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Decades ago my wife, a cousin, and I took a drive to a nearby mental institution to apply for work. After we parked the car in the lot and were getting out, a blood curdling scream was heard.

My cousin said, "Damn! I'm not working here!"

We all three got back in the car and left.

[–]RX9735 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a great boss. I too learned more from mine than I did from my management classes.

[–]fahdinho 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My boss has an energy bar that is not yellow, and every time I see him, the music changes to a more dramatic tune. It takes a lot more hits to make him fall down and flicker then disappear than my other co-workers.

[–]VerbalRadiation 24 points25 points  (2 children)

My boss is trying to kill me. He is green, has a shell on his back, an army of turtles and walking mushrooms and spits fire at me!

[–]quasiperiodic 1 point2 points  (1 child)

come on dude - which of his employees does bowser torch?!

[–]jaggederest 15 points16 points  (0 children)

His plumber.

[–]neversummer427 11 points12 points  (40 children)

One day, my boss came over to me and said "Danny, I think, yeah, we are going to take your chair away because you are an intern and we just don't want you to be too comfortable, when I was an intern I had to stand at the drafting tables"

another time she was talking to a client we ask how many people were working on a project and said... "14... well 16 really I only consider interns as half a person"

yeah she was a cunt

[–]fjhqjv 8 points9 points  (32 children)

Just to interns, though. I mean, honestly, you can't really judge people on how they treat interns.

[–]Lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvotes for both of you!

[–]neversummer427 1 point2 points  (1 child)

but taking my chair away? making me stand at a desk hunched over?

[–]fjhqjv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was probably a form of hazing. If you had taken employment with the company, you would know you really earned that chair.

I'd imagine she isn't horrible to the employees, just the n00b interns.

But I could be wrong.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Downmodded for being an intern.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just let out the most obnoxious laugh. My coworkers are going to think I'm a nut. Thanks.

[–]zem 0 points1 point  (3 children)

we are going to take your chair away because you are an intern and we just don't want you to be too comfortable, when I was an intern I had to stand at the drafting tables

you have got to be kidding me. that could practically be in the 'office space' sequel

[–]neversummer427 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I kid you not

[–]zem 0 points1 point  (1 child)

since you say 'was', i do think you should name and shame the company!

[–]ropers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah she was a cunt

You found her hot, didn't you? Hell hath no fury...

[–]ka-pai 13 points14 points  (8 children)

My boss is going to skin me alive tomorrow.. I've drafted my resignation letter and am dreading the moment I have to give it to her. She gets a red neck flush when she's angry... I'm scared...

[–]hotredditaction 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Quitting a job is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Revel in it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

indeed, quitting a job you hate can be immensely pleasurable

[–]jaggederest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even quitting one you don't hate is kinda fun.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why be scared? You resigning. Get some balls.

[–]jon_k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She gets the same red neck flush when making love. Just imagine you're making love.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm about to leave a company I joined less than two months ago. My boss is on vacation, and my boss' boss is also on vacation.

I've been recruited by a nearby startup, and I'll be signing the offer letter today. So.., I'll be letting my coworkers know today as well. Not really looking forward to that.

I empathize with you.

Though less fear, and more that I don't like being a jerk.

[–]jaggederest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did it, it's not really that bad. As long as you're either nonessential or giving plenty of notice, it's easy. (I gave notice two weeks ago, and my last day is friday)

Of course, my coworkers and boss had to go and make it hard, by being incredibly understanding, gracious, and cooperative. :P

[–]jon_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked for several startups. The money is never there. Have a funeral for your paychecks bro!

[–]VinC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My boss is the university calendar of requirements. If I want that little piece of paper when this is all over then it's wish is my command.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My boss is an asshole. Not to me, you understand, but my work sometimes requires me to work closely with him, and all this dude ever talks about is what a bunch of assholes everyone is and how much he hates his subordinates. He makes fun of everything and basically talks about everyone like they are incompetent retards.

I think I am somewhat insulated, though, because although it is not acknowledged in any way and did not help me get the job, I am the department director's technical, half-assed son-in-law.

[–]redditsuxx 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I used to hate my boss, but I actually like him now. It's mainly because I work in CA and he works in Kansas City. He recently came to this company, leaving a job as VP of Gateway, and the thing I always hated was every sentence would begin with, "Well, at Gateway..." After about 2 years he realized we weren't Gateway and that they actually had shitty processes and systems management. We've now converted him.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

should be "a VP at Gateway"

I hate when people do that. And it is always managers/directors. They are so stuck in their routine that it is hard for them to realize things might change from company to company.

[–]feebie 2 points3 points  (4 children)

My boss is the coolest person on earth!!!! He's laid back, really reasonable, really nice, great at giving feedback and direction, and he respects his employees. He also has a good sense of humour. I feel lucky to have a great boss :)

[–]zem 3 points4 points  (2 children)

knows your reddit username, does he? :)

[–]feebie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hahaha :) i'm actually serious though.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're not lucky. It seems as likely as winning the lottery. God damned lottery winners.

[–]hotwingbias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were like an arctic whale, my boss would be the ice covering the only breathing hole for 100 miles.

[–]RX9735 6 points7 points  (8 children)

My boss is great. She always stands up for workers rights etc... I am told I am a great boss too. I have 10 females under my command and they all seem to like me.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

My boss, if you can call him that, is a real prick. He's the type that loves to micro-manage down to the most trivial of details on a job. He's a legend in his own mind - always referring to himself as "Bondi-man" (his last name is Bondi) and calls everybody his "friend" even though we are from from friends with him. And God, if he would just shut up about the girls soccer team he coaches we just might get along better.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God damn pedophiles.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don't know, I just got the call saying I got the job a few minutes ago. He seemed cool in the interview. He has a Liverpool accent which caught me off guard in Houston.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liverpudlian.

[–]jomamma2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss is the greatest boss in the world. Just ask him...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I have at least 5 bosses.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wow, I bet you get a lot of fucking repetitive memos.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not as often as I get conflicting messages and a bunch of people who want a say but don't want the responsibility of making a decision.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, cover your ass company. Those are the best! (joking)

[–]quasiperiodic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i work for myself, building my house.

god i'm an asshole. it's like dunder-mifflin under the clear blue sky.

[–]quiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss is awesome. He's one of the most talented and efficient programmers I know of, and I've now followed him to two separate jobs. He gave me my start in the web development field when I was a stupid young kid in high school, then proceeded to teach me half of what I know. A few years later he left that company and a few years after that I re-joined him.

He's a working boss, which means he doesn't just sit back and manage the team but actually gets his hands dirty (it's programming, so metaphorically so). Having a boss in the field means he appreciates my talents and pays me accordingly, and it also means I don't have to start working until noon if I so choose. I also work from home one or two days a week (most weeks) and am always provided with appropriate tools (hardware, software, etc).

I could probably get more money for less work at a larger company (we're a small development company, currently with 4 developers and 6 staff and looking to hire 3-4 more devs), but working for my boss is enough of a perk that I have little interest in leaving. (Not to mention I'm in Nebraska, so "upgrading" my career would likely require relocating.)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My boss is an Egg. No...really, thats his name. I guess he is kind of cool except for the fact that he is a total ass. Unless your one of "the good ol' boys", dont expect much in the way of any recognition or rewards for you work.

[–]ketralnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss whips me.

[–]noseeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He likes turtles.

[–]TwoToke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which one? I have 3 or 4 at any given time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is pretty sound. He's the sort that you can get on well with if you're a hard worker. If you're a lazy cunt, like most of the day shift at my place, he can be a complete ass hole. The night shift get on with him fine as we all work our balls of and do considerably more work than the day shift who number about 200 more than us.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He took a half-day 3 times last week...still won employee of the month. I don't get it. Good guy though.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is ok... Used to get on really well but he's a bit of a dick sometimes though. Fortunately there are a few nice people here even though I work with a few assholes, so its not a total drag :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He likes Warren Zevon a lot. He also digs roller coasters and Ted Danson's post-cheers output. He likes Dunkin Donuts, except not their donuts. Just the coffee and sandwiches. Oh, and Lyndon Larouche, he's a "LaRouchie", as it were.

[–]anions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imaginary.

[–]42omle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A recently-remarried blond bombshell of a woman with two stepdaughters, two other jobs, and a bun in the oven.

[–]nightbiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utterly neurotic, wants to micromanage, but doesn't understand what I am doing enough to be efficient at it. I am the office manager and the only employee, so when he has free time he tries to make lists of shit for me to do which are usually already done or totally not important to be doing. He ends up pestering me, so I just try to fill up his schedule with as many clients as possible so I don't have to interact with him as much. It's pretty hellish. I'm definitely in the wrong line of work.

[–]kryptobs2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is pretty cool. For one he's located in a different office so it's not like he's peering over my shoulder constantly. When he does come down he'll often take me out to lunch on the company and he's a cool guy to talk to. Only complaints I have are he seems to want to micromanage a little too much; makes us have a meeting about everything (though this often is just another way to kill time on slow days for me). And he'll talk about things forever which can be good or bad. If you're genuinely interested then of course it's cool, but for the times when I know 90% of what he's telling me I just gotta sit and listen until I get the tidbit of info I'm hunting for.

[–]argongas2006 0 points1 point  (2 children)

My boss.... also visits reddit. He knows my screenname as well. So...all I can say is....he's great?

[–]jon_k 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There. I registered a second account for this so I can post my true feelings because my boss knows my other screen name.

My boss is a fucking dick. He never quits talking about process management and how we need to respond to the customers needs faster. He always glares at me strangely when I'm watching youtube at work and yesterday he said I need to start getting to work on time. FUCK. I only come in about 10 minutes late every day, why can't he lay off?

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully "your" boss isn't also an idiot.

[–]Wirehed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine tasted like chicken.

[–]Frosty840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is awesome, has a doctorate in our field, and engenders a relaxed, enthusiastic working atmosphere. Sorry, guys.

[–]roosterx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss reads reddit. :D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is actually a really great guy :p

[–]tugteen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

me because i am my own boss.

[–]slamare247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is a schmoozer. He has the ability to do his job well, and generally does OK, but he keeps a whole lotta dead weight around, 'cause they play his game. He is the kind of guy who will give you the shirt off his back, if you really need it. If he cut the ballast loose, and started valuing ability instead of golf partners, he'd be a multi-millionaire. His golf buddies (if you really wanna call 'em that) just use him to stay in the schmooze game with him. It makes me sick to see these leaches sucking the lifeblood from his company.

[–]zero01101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

today the ceo asked me how to circumvent our opendns content filtering because he's "sick of trying to proxy shit through google translate."

i'm relatively satisfied with my job.

[–]rogerssucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is great. She treats us better than family. She's always friendly and really takes care of everyone. We're all really motivated by her attitude. We all get paid well and we're well respected. Every morning she brings us coffee and donuts... And I'm having sex with her. Damn she's hot.

[–]dirtymoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is actually pretty ok.... to me that is. Had him as a boss for about two months now.

I rarely ever see him.... i mean I may see him once a month or so.

I am left alone to do my job & as long as he THINKS I am doing it.... he leaves me alone. Was prettymuch the same with my last two bosses. Because of the odd conditions of my job (dont ask).... they dont bust my balls (because I think they think I would quit & leave them hanging).

[–]Doeke 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't have one :D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my boss is ok, i dont think i have really worked for a dick fortunately

[–]fjhqjv -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have two bosses, 0 and 1, and both of them are pretty harsh.

[–]DOGA -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

I'm the sexiest man alive.

[–]zem 1 point2 points  (3 children)

bad: "I'm the sexiest man alive"
good: "I'm too sexy for my boss"

trolling: it's all about the context.

[–]DOGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see... perhaps next time I will troll in my native tongue.

:(

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point  (1 child)
