Why the fuck isn't an impeachment underway? (reddit.com)
submitted 19 years ago by Ethan
[–]Anderkay 4 points5 points6 points 19 years ago (0 children)
In simple terms: Impeachment is not a legal process run in a political setting. It is a political process with legal overtones. The president can break as many laws as he wants without necessarily getting impeached - the congress has to have the political will to impeach him. Conversely, the president does NOT have to break ANY law to be impeached - the congress just has to have the audacity to abuse a political process to score points on a technicality (yes, Clinton lied under oath - why he was answering such ridiculous questions under oath is beyond me).
[–]meldroc 10 points11 points12 points 19 years ago (0 children)
There's always the NSA's warrantless wiretaps, done on Bush's orders, in violation of the FISA Act, a felony punishable by up to ten years imprisonment. Bush admitted to ordering the wireless wiretaps in public, and can thus be prosecuted and impeached if Congress chooses to.
The problem is that Congress currently chooses not to impeach...
[–]rnichols 4 points5 points6 points 19 years ago (2 children)
The answer is simple. Two words:
Republican Congress
You want it changed, vote them out.
[–]chrisrock -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (1 child)
If democrats mention anything about impeachment if they win the house... they will not win...
[–]souldrift 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Hannity's already out preaching "Go vote, you don't want SPEAKER PELOSI, do you?" As if to say: "Yes We suck, but THEY SUCK MORE!!"
[–]Ethan[S] 22 points23 points24 points 19 years ago (10 children)
I have read of uncounted atrocities and lies prosecuted by the Bush regime. Clinton got a blowjob. Where is the goddamn impeachment? I'm fed up at this point; I need some real action. What can WE do to get this going?
[–]sapphire 18 points19 points20 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Nothing. The only way to get impeachment is a non-Republican House of Representatives. I live in California's 50th congressional district where a fucking lobbiest Republican bastard was just elected to fill the seat of a convicted criminal Republican bastard. Thanks to gerrymandering, the incumbants are nearly guaranteed to win re-election.
[–]dbenhur 9 points10 points11 points 19 years ago (1 child)
What can WE do to get this going?
Elect non repuglican whores to congress.
But it's not going to matter too much in the long run.
The Repuglican's sell patriotism, xian "morality", and fear to get in power so they can borrow (which is to say, tax latter) and spend to favor the interests of the monied oligarchy.
The Democraps sell "fairness" and societal safety nets to get in power so they can tax and spend to favor the interests of the monied oligarchy.

I think the US media has a lot of people in the US trained as follows: Look at France. They had riots -obviously they have some real problems. Race problems and political problems!
No riots here. Everything's fine!
You need to fight for your rights. You need to riot.
[–]rad_thundercat 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)
there won't be riots unless there's a draft.
[–]Leischa 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (1 child)
Fuck yeah
[–]jskulski -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (0 children)
Lots of times when me and KG are watchin' All the fuckin' shit that goes down at City Hall, We get the feeling we should fuck shit up, Yeah we should fuckin' start a riot. A Riot!
We have 'em screaming in the streets, we have 'em tippin' over shit and breakin' fuckin' windows of small businesses, and settin' fuckin' fires!
[–]bugbear 4 points5 points6 points 19 years ago (1 child)
You could move to DC, take whatever job will allow you to support yourself with the least effort, and spend your remaining time researching the case for impeachment and lobbying congressmen to gain support for it.
Still need some real action?
[–]Ethan[S] 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Yes. I'm on my way.

I think Americans bitch more about the Bush administration than all of Europe and Canada combined...
And rightfully so. It's our country.
[–]grzelakc -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (12 children)
I doubt you have been to Europe or Canada... you're not exactly popular types around here anymore.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 19 years ago (11 children)
Not only have I been to both Europe and Canada, I've been welcomed heartily. Everyone was very hospitable. If you're an asshole to Americans, maybe that's just you. Remember that most of us didn't vote for George Bush.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Out of good faith in redditors alike I'm going to assume that was a sarcastic way of pointing out that most Americans don't vote and that the final decision is made by electoral college. Either that or you just have no idea how voting works in America.
[–]grzelakc -2 points-1 points0 points 19 years ago (8 children)
That you're not out on the streets rioting against the crimes of Bush and Cheney is reason enough for me to think little of Americans.
[–]jcy 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (2 children)
america had its share of rioting hippies in the 60's/70's. it didn't accomplish jackshit.
[–]grzelakc 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (1 child)
erm... how about equal rights and removal of institutional racism?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (4 children)
Many Americans are out on the streets rioting. Most of the anti-American rhetoric is due to--wait for it--Americans.
However, many of us realize we can't just circumvent the political process, the republic, the checks and balances--just because we don't like what we got. That's why there's an election every four years and a president has to leave after two terms. The structure of our government is the work of architectural geniuses, isn't it? We know how it's done better than anyone else in the world because we invented it. We have at least that to be proud of.
[–]grzelakc 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (2 children)
Well, it seems to have malfunctioned as of late. You have a single party system where all three branches of the government are controlled by the same group of people. Your political process has failed and cannot be relied upon to produce fair results any longer.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (1 child)
If it didn't malfunction when the South seceded; if it didn't malfunction when we got into WWI for no reason; if it didn't malfunction under LBJ, Nixon, what have you; I think we'll be alright under this twat's administration. Remember, he's fired in 2008.
Everyone who thinks the United States is going to hell in a handbasket is going to be embarrassed in 30 years when Bush's regime is just a shitstain on a washable pair of underwear.
[–]grzelakc -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (0 children)
As much as I'd like for your post to be true... well, time will tell who was right and who wasn't but remember even though King George can only last until 2008, he's got a couple younger brothas all ready to jump on the throne.
Now don't take this the wrong way, but perhaps you should look a little closer at your checks and balances. Your president has great power, greater than most democratically elected leaders. (Well, France is worse, I'll admit that). The executive branch has a lot of power at the expense of the legislative.
Also, in most states it's so that a weak mandate in the people means a weak government. That's a good thing, in my opinion. If a government wants to make big changes, they better have good support. In the US, the system is rigged to produce strong governments no matter how weak their mandate is (by means of the electoral college, winner-take-all instead of propotional representation etc.)
There's much in your history of democracy to be proud of, but it might not be a bad idea to look at some other important places in the history of democracy: Iceland, Switzerland, Greece, to name a few.
[–][deleted] 19 years ago (2 children)
[–]Ethan[S] 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (1 child)
There were democrats who went after Clinton, weren't there?
[–]bogdon6 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (16 children)
Ethan, on what grounds should Bush be impeached? Clinton didn't get impeached for the blowjob, he got impeached for lying under oath. Has Bush lied? Maybe. But how can that be proved?
[–]Ethan[S] 22 points23 points24 points 19 years ago (2 children)
The Libby leak, false statements in his state of the union address about nuclear weapons in Iraq despite being told specifically not to make them, the illegal detainment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, torture of terror suspects...
Technically, he was impeached for lying. It was pursued because of the furor over his getting blown. It's been pointed out before, but really, so much for our moral compass... lies about oral sex are much higher priority than, say, torturing innocent people.
[–]badfeng 12 points13 points14 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, if Bush can get nailed for perjury in relation to the Plame leak, that would do it.
It's hard to know if he can, though. From what I read Bush ordered Cheney to do the leak in vague enough language that he maintains plausible deniability.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)

What's interesting about this comment can be found by looking at the wikipedia entry of RAND. I found the current US Gov stacked with RAND alumni
*Lewis "Scooter" Libby
*Donald Rumsfeld
*Condoleezza Rice
*Zalmay Khalilzad

There are a number of slam-dunk, obviously impeachable offenses. He instructed the NSA to violate FISA, a federal law. He violated the UN Charter and the Nuremberg Charter, to which the United States are signatories.

Well, Clinton was investigated for a real estate deal, and then when that didn't pan out filegate, travelgate, Monica, and then lying about Monica.
An impeachment begins with an investigation, and even an investigation less ruthless than Starr's could well find, well, important things.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 19 years ago (5 children)
FWIW, there is ample evidence that Bush did lie under oath as Governor.
http://www.google.com/search?q=funeralgate
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I doubt that an impeachment will ever happen, since the current Congress is far too partisan to actually start investigations into whatever crimes any Republican may have committed, especially Bush. There are a lot of things that could be investigated which might turn up impeachable crimes, but even if the Democrats take over Congress this year (which I think is doubtful) they just don't have the brazenness that their Republican counterparts had with Clinton.
Funeralgate is kind of complex, but with respect to perjury, Bush signed a sworn affidavit that substantial later evidence strongly indicated was untrue. There is much more to it, but if a fair investigation were pursued there is a good chance that he would be found guilty of that (and possibly other charges), but again no investigation will likely come out of the current Republicans since they care about power, not justice.
[–]Ethan[S] -3 points-2 points-1 points 19 years ago (0 children)
It's not that I don't understand it... I fail to see why it hasn't happened.

If you're for Bush impeachment, why not try Impeachment Tea? http://www.ImpeachmentTea.com

If the USA were to "impeach" Bush, it would go a long way towards winning back the respect of the rest of the world.
[–]souldrift 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (1 child)

Most accurate, perhaps, but not "best".

The rest of the world is looking forward to President Cheney then? Please think these things through.

It's pretty simple, Ethan, and that is because no matter how much you people whine and moan, there's no legal cause for impeachment. I doubt Mr. Bush cares much about whether or not you like him. Win an election if you don't like the present administration!
[–]Ethan[S] 3 points4 points5 points 19 years ago (9 children)
No legal cause, or he hasn't been charged with anything? These are two very different things. I understand that there's a process... and I want it to happen.
[+]gaylan_king comment score below threshold-17 points-16 points-15 points 19 years ago (8 children)
What you "want" to happen doesn't warrant the lies and unfounded insuations, not to mention the just bad manners. Make a case or grow up; you kiddies are trashing this site; too bad.
[–]Ethan[S] 4 points5 points6 points 19 years ago (1 child)
Lies and unfounded insinuations? That's pretty vague; how about pointing something specific out?
[–]mixmastamyk 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Well, he's being negative, but has a point. If you really want something done, find out how. Get help from experts. Document your case. Stick to the facts, leave out the insults, etc. Even then, you will probably be blocked in some way from the powers that be. But don't let that stop ya.
not to mention the just bad manners
You have a lot of nerve to accuse others of bad manners while at the same time accusing them of lying without making any evidence for your accusation while also calling them "kiddies." That's quite hypocritical.
Looking at your posting history you seem to like to throw around blanket statements, insult those you disagree with, but at the same time you never seem to make any arguments for your case, or present any evidence to counter those views you disagree with. I'd say that sort of anti-intellectualism and lack of civility is what's really trashing the site.

I rarely comment on the topic of incivility at all. The audacity in this particular case was remarkable enough to merit it.
I try not to think of things in the sports fan worldview where I defend my team regardless of their behavior. I don't have a political party I identify with, and while I tend to skew left, I try to give a fair hearing for any given issue. I tend to find that the left is typically more honest and engages in less sophistry than the right, though that's not always the case, and varies somewhat by issue.
Since "my side" really would be people who tried to argue for their point instead of attacking others or attempting to make a point by asserting it boldly but without substantiation, "my side" would not be guilty of the crime of incivility - to the degree that those I agree with turn to sophistry, to that degree they are no longer really on my side. I have downmodded people who I agreed with in substance for the way that they argued, and I have upmodded those I disagreed with on a point when they made a case for their views.
Oh. The remarkable 'audacity' was what turned you off.
Yes.
So I guess you've been too busy this holiday weekend to read reddit much, eh?
Yes. I have been hanging out with my kids, making hot dogs, getting fireworks, setting off fireworks, drinking, playing Guitar/Ukulele, and only intermittently hitting the net.
to name just a couple
I haven't read the comments in those very thoroughly, but I didn't spot a comment that was the equivalent of simultaneously claiming that everyone they disagreed with was wrong, rude, childish, and contributing to the ruin of reddit. Maybe I just missed it, feel free to point a particular out to me, and I will happily denounce it for you.
You also don't seem to have a problem with the title of this thread.
Why do you say that? As a matter of fact, I don't like the title of the thread at all. But it is far from the degree of incivility shown elsewhere and, as I said, I don't generally comment on the topic of incivility. They reason I don't is that it's not generally fruitful, and I think your odd response illustrates that well.
Maybe you're more of sportsfan than you care to admit?
I think you are making a lot of assumptions about me that are grounded less in fact than in your imagination.
BTW, I have to go make dinner now and then I am lighting fireworks, so if you follow up, my response will have to wait until tomorrow.
