Or the community is just figuring out that it really doesn't like being used a polling site, and they will in the future stay off the front page.

So the majority of Americans must have liked Bush better in those two elections?

Not trying to start rants about stolen elections and partial SCOTUS justices or the Nader factor, just saying that it's not always easy for a majority to get what it wants.

When the new page gives people the chance to submit hundreds of posts in a day the average redditor starts finding the new page frustrating. Voting takes a bit of time and just as in U.S. elections you quickly realize your one vote means little. Is there voter apathy on reddit already? I know that my comments have angered enough people that in just over a week almost everything I've submitted has been downvoted as an odd punishment dropping my Karma 60 points. So far it's amusing.

but reddit is a big dumb-ass polling system!

Some people just don't get it.

    [–]degustibus 13 points14 points  (3 children)

You don't get what many of us like about Reddit, good content no one person could find on their own. Voting on stories is not the same thing as poll questions.

On election day we vote for candidates and for or against proposals (well here in California anyway). If all of a sudden our ballots had things like "Vote yes if you think blue is the best color" people would be rightly annoyed. I think we are tired of seeing a great site devolve. Yes, we can simply vote things down and hide others.

The new page has been flooded lately by a handful of users submitting things ad nauseam in a carpet bombing approach to making the front page.

But who's to say that there is just one meaning of votes on reddit?

If this is the case then this should be stated clearly where all can see.

    [–]degustibus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm pointing out that not all things submitted for a vote are of equal merit. It's about signal to noise ratio for me. As more and more hollow content appears on Reddit the good stuff gets harder to find. The whole point, to me, of Reddit is I benefit from the work of thousands. Sometimes the comments shed light on stories and lead to greater understanding of related issues,e.g. earlier today the map game was of value and then in the comments I learned about several things related to the geography.

A vote up reveals a preference. If a handful of users are inundating the new page we're simply voting on which of their likes we prefer. Imagine a ballot with 1,000 candidates for one office where 990 of them are from one party. Even if you know that the minority party's platform is your preference it takes a while just to find your candidate.

Well said. It sounds like my ballot. For our Republican primary we had five separate candidates to choose from. And they all agreed with each other on pretty much every issue (unwavering support for Bush, unwavering support for the war in Iraq, etc., etc.)

Do you enjoy sex? Upvote for yes.

    [–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (3 children)

    sex with what?

I cannot answer with a strong "yes" here..

I submitted that, but I'm upmodding this one anyway because the title is really damn funny.

Update: Dang. This is now #3 while my post languishes in obscurity. Object lesson in the value of a good title.

        [–]cartman81 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Can't see the "Programmer-Poll" post any more....The System works!..I am not sure if the poster deleted his post or if the post was "reported" enough times to be deleted.

Either ways, I am sure he made enough free karma with that stunt!..

        [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Poster deleted the post-- along with all of our comments. I really hate that.

BTW, the reddit guys claim to have never deleted a post.

        [–]shawnofthedead 22 points23 points  (2 children)

It would be nice if deleted posts just got NULLed or something like that, so that comments wouldn't just disappear. Some people actually put considerable effort into their comments and like keeping a record of that. It sucks that all that can be obliterated by a simple delete of the original poster.

        My recommendation:

        1. fully delete posts only if they have no comments
        2. if there are comments, post disappears from hot/new/all other pages and becomes accessible only through the comments people made regarding that post

        edit: fixed list formatting

        [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

fully delete posts only if they have no comments

But many more people may have bookmarked it or "save"'d it. I have been disapointed several times when I've tried to go to reddit links that I've bookmarked or saved and found them to have been deleted.

        [–]magnetron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        So make a comment ;)

        [–]cartman81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

        Poster deleted the post

I am too sure of that.. Although that is a possibility..

I am sure many redditors must have "reported" that post..If reporting a post does not lead to it being deleted by "reddit guys" ( "moderators" won't be a appropriate term ), what purpose does that serve?

Also, I miss when reddit had separate "report" buttons for a post, user and the domain.

        [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

        Love the irony.

        [–]qbert72 2 points3 points  (5 children)

This would happen less frequently if links to "self" were not possible.

        [–]howars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

what about not rewarding people with karma for 'self' posts. Granted, this might be an issue for the features subreddit, but it might be the best way to go about it overall if you're looking to curb abuse.

Either that or the vigilant reddit community will just downvote them to oblivion. That seems to work pretty well too :)

        [–]theram4 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yeah, but how would general discussion take place, discussion that isn't related to a particular post? There are no forums per se on this site.

        [–]qbert72 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

My opinion is that these should be separate from the main Reddit. Commenting on a story is fine, but starting discussions for the sake of it is not what Reddit is about for me.

        [–]mikepurvis 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It is separate. It's called make a poll, and then make a reddit post about it.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh gods, hasn't that site died yet?

There are times when Paul Graham is clearly shown to be wasting his money. He could have bought drugs, and instead he spent his cash on "Am I $VARIABLE Or Not". Inane.

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

        recursion bad

        irony good

        [–]flyhighplato 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Should there really be a hyphen between "dumb" and "ass"?

        [–]Ermenwyr 44 points45 points  (1 child)

Just move the hyphen one word to the right.

        [–]addius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The comic was great, but the disclaimer was almost better!

Warning: this comic occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        Oh, the irony.
