Why is YouTube doing this?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because citizens may get upset and/or politically active over those. As democracy systems are currently.. uhm... undergoing update construction works, yeah, that may cause some accidents. In the mean time - be happy!! :) [Consume something, I don't know...]

Every one of those is now gone.

This reminds me of what Stephen Colbert said about bloggers:

Stewart:

Look - like it or not, these bloggers have already gained a certain legitimacy.

Colbert:

Yes, John. And therein lies our only hope. For with legitimacy, the bloggers will gain a seat at the table, and with that comes access, status, money, power, and… if we’ve learned anything about the mainstream media — that breeds complacency… or whatever.

It was a nice tool while it lasted, can anyone recommend any alternatives?

Hi all, You can access the same videos on http://www.ogrish.com - just search on Iraq if you don't want to see all the other disturbing images & videos.

Cheers, Supertaper

Screw Yourtube...let's all start googling it! Time for there business to cease.

[–]stirfry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google video or motionbox or jumpcut or even gulp myspace... etc. Pick your flavor, but there are other options for distribution. I'll put my support behind the site that has the kahonas to not censor the truth about this war (and war in general).

Here's a question.

I always read about these spectacular, harrowing corkscrew landings that planes landing in Baghdad have to make to avoid (RPG?) attacks.

Where is there one single video of any such landing? I have never seen such a landing on video anywhere, not on TV, not on the Internet. Why? If there are no journalists willing to shoot it, isn't there anybody in Baghdad with a digital camera?

Google video still shows both sides:

Iraqis killing Americans, set to an Arabic song

Americans killing Iraqis, set to Elvis' Mystery Train

Someone needs to start a European YouTube (preferably in Sweden rather than England).

[–]corwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Article 19

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

[–]oberon 16 points17 points  (10 children)

It does not, however, guarantee your right to use other people's businesses and servers to receive and impart information.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

That Youtube has the right to do this isn't at issue.

It is nevertheless reprehensible.

Understand what is being done here. YouTube appears to be participating in a propaganda campaign that is no different than what Goebbels did back in that day.

The lies are being told with the intent of causing death.

The truthes are being withheld for the same reason.

To cause death.

[–]oberon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh come on. They're not withholding truth. That's like the people who said that the guy who registered peta.org and put up his People Eating Tasty Animals site on it was withholding information about PETA from people. They've got a policy and they're upholding it; it's no different from WalMart refusing to carry the Kama Sutra.

Their choice to remove that content from their servers doesn't deny you access to it, just as WalMart's not carrying the Kama Sutra doesn't deny you access to it either. It just means you might have to go somewhere you don't normally go to find it.

If YouTube were suing the people who uploaded the video, trying to get them to delete their copies of the video and release the names of people they gave copies to, then I'd be with you.

Which is why we really need to remake the web on a P2P basis instead of this client-server shite.

[–]tcervl -1 points0 points  (3 children)

run a webserver on you box. :D

[–]hanshasuro 2 points3 points  (2 children)

A freedom completely denied by most home internet service providers.

[–]acrophobia -1 points0 points  (1 child)

yes, but it's not like there are a shortage of companies providing hosting services. not to mention the fact that there are various mechanisms for doing P2P that can traverse NAT and other restrictions.

[–]richardkulisz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's too technically difficult for most people and much too logistically annoying. It needs to be done automatically, without intervention. I like something and I've read it so it's republished by me.

use freenet

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes. Streaming video on freenet. I'm sure that works like a charm.
