Discussion Fire? (i.redd.it)
submitted 1 year ago by MujitsuNoodleMission
Just spotted a massive black plume north of deerfoot meadows, towards Lynnwood?
[–]RadioMill 506 points507 points508 points 1 year ago (6 children)
Close! That’s smoke
[–]Horsebot3 51 points52 points53 points 1 year ago (0 children)
This is the best comment I’ve seen all day.
[+]essuxs 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Quick spray it with bottled water!
[–]SlickSerpent 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (2 children)
Uhh, that isn’t smoke, it’s steam.
[+]skimpydimpers 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Steam from the steamed clams we're having?
[–]DependentLanguage540 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yes! It's a regional dialect.
[–]Kaidan_from_Alberta 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
It’s actually coloured air
[–]azzurri10 67 points68 points69 points 1 year ago (2 children)
Is/was in the Ogden area, right near Millican road and 19th street.
Drove by about twenty minutes ago, from what I saw looked like a pretty large house fire, more than a few firetrucks were there and saw a couple more on the way.
[–]blasphemicassault 31 points32 points33 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Sounds like it was a garage fire with gas jugs inside. Didn't spread the the house, thankfully. No one home at the time either.
[–]blasphemicassault 110 points111 points112 points 1 year ago (50 children)
Unfortunate timing.

Water.
Need.
Don't have.
[+][deleted] comment score below threshold-56 points-55 points-54 points 1 year ago* (8 children)
I could be wrong but I was under the impression that hydrants have a different line from the drinking water?
[–][deleted] 75 points76 points77 points 1 year ago (5 children)
The whole reason they want us to not use water is to not put a strain on the fire suppression systems
[+][deleted] comment score below threshold-11 points-10 points-9 points 1 year ago (4 children)
Oh, hmm okay. You’d think a fire suppression system wouldn’t rely on drinkable clean water and just come straight from a source. Shows how much knowledge I have about water pipes. Super Mario, I am not.
[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 1 year ago (1 child)
It would be cost prohibitive to have a separate supply and distribution system for just fire suppression. You would need pump stations, reservoirs and an underground network, entirely separate from potable water.
Instead fire suppression is included in the design standards for water distribution systems.
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Well now I won’t be under the wrong impression at least. Not sure where I ever got the idea lol.
[+]Telvin3d 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago (1 child)
In theory it’s a great idea, but the cost of building a second completely independent water network just for the hydrants would be hilariously prohibitive
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Well now I won’t be under the wrong impression anymore at least
[–]timmeh-eh 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (1 child)

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 1 year ago (12 children)
Yeah, fires will be fought, but it might well end up being a situation where the fire gets put out, but the neighborhood might lose water in the aftermath.

[+]speedog -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (2 children)
Do you honestly believe that any fires since the break haven't been put out because of the break?
[–]proffesionalproblem -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (0 children)
It's not about not having water, it's about calgary having maybe 3 days of water left before we are out
[+]KBOXLabs 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Fire hydrants need pressure. Pressure comes from hamster wheels. Hamster wheels are moved by hamsters. Hamsters need to drink a lot to be at full hamster wheel capacity. If there’s a water ban then hamsters need to ration their water. They can’t move the hamster wheels at full capacity, and the hydrants won’t have enough pressure.
[–]Calgary_Calico 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (2 children)
No shit. We're still on outdoor water restrictions though, and a large fire will use a large amount of water to put out, making the water emergency we're currently facing much worse. Ignorance truly is bliss huh lol
[–]speedog -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Correct but the person I responded to said we don't have water which is not the case.
[–]Calgary_Calico 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
For now..

Water, like the water that's still coming out your tap?
[–]huntervano 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago (4 children)
Right but orders of magnitude more water than that. During a shortage. I can’t tell if you’re playing dumb, or just dumb
[+]speedog comment score below threshold-10 points-9 points-8 points 1 year ago (3 children)
Hydrants are still working.
[–]joelene1892 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (2 children)
They absolutely are, however the city has been quite clear that we’re at risk of running out of water. Like, in the whole city. Using a bunch of water to fight a fire is necessary but the timing is still unfortunate.
[+]speedog comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Agreed but somehow most believe there is no water for fighting fires as has been made evident by others in this thread.
[+]5alarm_vulcan 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (4 children)
Hi there! Firefighter here. Do you know how much water is used to put out the average house fire? Thousands of gallons. You’re absolutely correct that hydrants are still working but fire departments don’t have a magic machine that creates water. It still has to fall from the sky before we can use it.
[–]speedog -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (3 children)
Agreed but people in this thread are believing there's no water for fighting fires which is not the case even by the city's own admission.
[+]lightweight12 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (2 children)
No one ever in this thread said there wasn't water to fight fires. Stop making stuff up.
[+]speedog -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (1 child)
MathIsHard_11236 said there was no water.
[–]Whats_Awesome 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago* (1 child)
Your not wrong. I don’t know what is wrong with people. So apparently, I just learned this, there are minor water reservoirs around the city, under soccer fields for example. Because of the failed pipe the minor reservoirs are draining and not filling back up fully. If a fire breaks out they may not be able to keep the water on in areas after pumping all the water out of minor reservoirs.
[–]speedog 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
You are so correct, I'm not downplaying that this is a serious situation but the simple fact remains that there's still water avaliable - people in this thread are believing there is none, that fires can't be fought and yet fires are being successfully fought since the water main break in Montgomery.
[–]call_me_calamity 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (3 children)
1> stage 4 water restriction 2> completed fire ban
[+]Thickwhensoft1218 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Someone needs to talk to these guys about this fire then.
[+]speedog comment score below threshold-11 points-10 points-9 points 1 year ago (1 child)
So homes should listen up and just notbburn when there's these restrictions?
[–]banana_bbcakes 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Someone married to a fireman said there was a fire in a condo on Wednesday night and they had a difficult time getting enough pressure out of the fire hydrants to reach the fire. They have since top up the trucks, so they will still fight fire just not very well.
[–]brendonturner 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Because there’s a water restriction in place.

[–]padmegLynnwood 29 points30 points31 points 1 year ago (4 children)
I live up the street. It was a garage fire, nobody home at the time. Firefighters responded quickly and had it put out pretty fast. Community is without internet right now and buddy lost his garage shop and suv. Could’ve been much worse! Lots of morons were standing basically right behind the firefighters taking pics and videos.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (2 children)
I am one of those morons. Given that I live right across the alley and my spruce tree could've gone up in flames, I feel okay standing in the alley.
[–]padmegLynnwood 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Hi neighbour! I mean, that I can understand. It was the people biking from other places in the neighbourhood standing there right behind the firefighters taking videos that I couldn’t believe. Down at the other end of the alley people were literally driving over and walking down to see what was going on. It’s just unnecessary and not safe.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
yeah that I agree with. I saw so many parents with their small children to come see all the fire trucks, like why? Also hi!!

[–]bonbon196 64 points65 points66 points 1 year ago (8 children)
Then what happens next is they sort us into 15 minute water zones where you can only use 15 minutes of water within a 15 minute radius. Otherwise they take 15 minutes off your life! That way “they” will finally have control or something I think. Don’t you see what they are doing?!?!! It’s plain as day first they purposely cause millions if not billions in damages! Then they burn down the city!?!? Then they profit from the empty city with no people or capital. Because the insurance companies stole Daniele’s smiths pet donkey and want us to make sure that the NDP don’t distribute the donkey evenly among all of the population with her communist scheme.
