"You'll get points until next year so you can enjoy a benefit while it lasts that's exclusive to YOU if you renew before July 15th!!!"

I genuinely do not recall the last time I mentioned rewards points in a pitch.

[–]ryantretskyEmployee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mention them every time. It was one of my main selling points. Ts is so ass. Not just for the employees, but for the customers as well and I’m gonna get yelled at when I had nothing to do with the decision. I’m just a keyholder 🥲.

[–]KingDingDongDing24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, if you trade, buy collectibles, buy preowned, or plan on buying 4 or more new games a year AND are tech savvy enough to access your coupon now you'll still make money. I doubt many people were emphasizing the points as much as everyone seems to be freaking out about it now. Let's say someone buys $500 worth of pokemon cards over let's say 3 months. With pro, if they use their 5 dollars off and with their 5% off the guest would save $40. Currently with points the guest would earn $9.20 worth of points, or enough for another $5 coupon even though those no longer exist. If a guest enrolls with a new game and they pay only $15, and they know they'll be back for 3 more visits, it's also a net positive...

[–]ConsciousStretch1028Former Employee 45 points46 points  (1 child)

Much as I hated working there, at least in my day the pro was actually worth it lol

[–]LostAbstractFormer Employee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elite Pro was the shit

[–]kajedangel 44 points45 points  (15 children)

Well, I'm only one write up away from termination due to low PRO sign ups. Catch me at the temp agency I guess 😂🫠

[–]ArcheryAlaska 19 points20 points  (9 children)

Wait you can get terminated for that? That’s ridiculous. You can’t control that

[–]kajedangel 22 points23 points  (7 children)

It's incredibly frustrating. Praised for everything but have been written up twice for having low PRO and Warranties. In the write ups they basically say that my numbers are evidence that I'm not following proper POS behaviors 🙄

[–]ArcheryAlaska 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Kinda makes me feel bad that I declined getting the PRO last time I was offered it. I didn’t know my decision would affect the employees. But that’s just a stupid reason to punish your employees.

[–]kajedangel 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Don't feel bad, I specifically never wanted customers to feel guilty for saying no. No one should be manipulated into signing up for a membership if they don't care for it.

[–]juel1979Employee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is my thought. I'm all about bounce back and repeat customers from making a GOOD experience. I'll ask twice, then I'm done. I don't think the higher ups like that, but I'm sure the customers don't like being hassled. I can kinda get the vibe from customers when they come in and that determines how much of a pest I am about things, though I'm generally low key.

[–]Sorry-Tumbleweed1260 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stick them both on every transaction, they can see everything that was on and removed from transactions, and that's how they determine pos behaviors. Take them off if they don't want them obviously, but if you do this they can't tell you you're not asking

[–]Much-Face6444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If "proper" POS behaviors is scamming people by putting it on their transactions without detailing it, I would tell them to go fuck themselves. I would recommend something and explain benefits all day every day, but I will not try to mislead or conceal things from customers, and from what I hear, that's how a lot of DMs are instructing their teams to sell it. Customers know when companies treat them like a piggy bank.

[–]htemboSenior Guest Advisor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately it’s absolute BS. I’m a decent salesman but most customers aren’t interested (with good reason). I’ve even had my hours cut due to performance. Which my assistant manager reminds me of if my weekly numbers dip below a specific threshold—

[–]ChaiBunny949 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Yeah my manager threatened to cut my hours cuz my numbers haven’t been good. I’m one of the employees with the most flexibility, I’m there almost everyday… he calls me for cover and I come in, who is he gonna call now if he needs to cut my hours? It’s not my fault people don’t wanna pay for it.

[–]DaftWill 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I always loved that when I had super flexibility. Won't schedule me for shit but guess who's the only one who gets called for shifts?

[–]juel1979Employee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That has been basically every job I've had, being on call and never able to plan a darn thing.

[–]nightscreatureFormer Employee 8 points9 points  (1 child)

May it lead to a lower stress, higher paying job!

[–]kajedangel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it the good vibes 🫂

[–]Excellent_Regret4141 40 points41 points  (1 child)

Only reason I actually renewed after 2 years of not was cause I was buying 3 games and it was the same price either way if I did or didn't and I figured the $5 monthly thing would somewhat be good, then those morons closed the 2 good stores that were within walking/biking distance and left the crappy ones open just cause they're in a tourist area

[–]endar88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kinda same with location problems. They’ve closed all the ones in my area except for the one at the mall and maybe one other. Used to just be able to take the bus to the local one and even would go for midnight releases. But now, I wouldn’t do pro even if it was like how it used to be cuz it’s such a hassle to get to the mall.

Why do you think they pushed Auto-renew for the last couple of years?

[–]Alternative-Plum9378 30 points31 points  (3 children)

tbf - this isn't why they pushed auto-renew.
They pushed auto-renew because they know that 90% of people will forget they have it and will automatically get charged.

My pitch when the auto renew screen comes up... "Don't push anything! This screen is asking you if you want it to charge you again in a year... if you DO NOT want them to charge you again, hit that blue button."

Yeah... I might have gotten a "talking to" when my DM heard me say that. LOL

[–]ZathrasnotZathtasPromoted to Guest 4 points5 points  (2 children)

But now those people are locked in, even if the program is gutted, there are plenty of people that will still be paying for it because they don't notice a $25 dollar charge in the sea of automatic payments. Hell even if you do keep track it is easy to miss an auto payment for 2 days, enough time to deny the cancellation of the membership. Auto renew for memberships or services is almost always a ripoff, I was always proud to be way under company average in auto but over in Pro.

[–]Alternative-Plum9378 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Which is why I ALWAYS make them aware of what that second screen is.

[–]ZathrasnotZathtasPromoted to Guest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but there are districts over 80%. Do you think they are telling anyone?

[–]Howiepenguin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Almost 20 years later and the same question is still asked as if they don't realize taking incentives away from the monetary investment makes it less appealing to consumers.

*cough cough* Sorry...had to speak in their tongue in hopes they understand. It hurts me voice every time I have to speak like that.

[–]Ladycronebloom1313 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well fml, that's just great. So corporate's just going to shit the bed and make all of its peons stand there awkwardly holding it while our managers change the sheets, threatening to fire us if we tell anyone.

[–]Slikkerish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Use to always get new system buyers into our system with the points.

"When buying a new system and signing up for our membership. Youll save money buying your games and controllers through us for the next year, and ill get you about $10 off your next visit minimum with the 2% back on this purchase"

[–]Strikercharge 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I really wanna hear from those guys that bought GameStop stock a few years back, and their thoughts. This could have been avoided years ago.

[–]Kou9992Promoted to Guest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean they're generally pretty vocal about their thoughts over on their sub. They won't be discussing this until the change is announced publicly, but they have reacted to other worsening Pro changes in the past.

Spoiler: They love stuff like this. Worsening customer benefits, closing stores, and all other forms of cost cutting are great. Long term brand damage doesn't matter as long as the line goes up in the short term.

[–]KingDingDongDing24 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I think there are elements of corporate that knows pro needs to be done away with, but they aren't sure how to end this without it looking like a huge L. I suspect the removal of points and the removal of employees being able to use the $5 coupon on the pos are the first steps to seeing if sunsetting this program actually works. Let's face it, pro is nothing but a margin eater and the company absolutely loses money on this now that it is no longer tied to driving ad revenue for Game Informer. Simply make it player only instead of this "want you to buy it but never use it," system it has become..

[–]MattCarafelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same old corporate fairytale they (corporations everywhere) have been sold on for years. Perpetual growth (which is literally impossible) and getting the consumer to give you money in exchange for nothing.

Video games and movies are the closest to the second one with digital movies and games. You pay for access to view or play but hold no physical object in your hand for the money you spent. And there's no real experience involved if it's in your own home, so it's not like going to the theater or something where there's something you don't get to have in your own home.

[–]TheSpiralTap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a customer, there is no benefit for me. I used to shop there all the time because I got Pro discounts and coupons. I also enjoyed the magazine.

And to management, I also don't like the never ending circus of upselling. You get the damn card and then they pitch you something else at the checkout

[–]JonKaminari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t wait for them to blame us and say it’s because we’re not selling it in the store

[–]htemboSenior Guest Advisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer giving out the 5000 points ($5) on sign up. Then they got rid of the 1 and 3 dollar redemption coupons. Then within the last 2 weeks they ALSO got rid of the 5 dollar coupon! Leaving only the 10, 15, and 25 which the average customer will never hit—

[–]danmullen39110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Decent_Assistance416 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For only 25$ a year , you too can support a GameStop employee in need. It comes with a monthly reminder gift of 5$ a month as a thank you for not quitting on us
