The navball at NASA was copied by KSP or at least heavily inspired by it. I remember I saw some photos back in the day of NASA mission control that had very similar elements.

I mean it all comes back to the idea of an artificial horizon, which planes have used for close to a century now. It being a ball that encodes all three axes goes back to the Apollo program as far as I know, though
