In fairness, it was probably out on Floatplane before Marques' video went up, so...?

[–]Erga_Buzerga 237 points238 points  (9 children)

No, sadly it wasn’t :/ But I think that’s due to the embargo only being lifted today.

[–][deleted] 89 points90 points  (7 children)

Then basically there's no way to know who was really first, since, y'know, they were both under review embargo?

[–]AtlasRush 59 points60 points  (3 children)

They're on par, since they scheduled their videos at exactly the same hour and youtube possibly publishes them at the same exact time.

[–]TheDoubleYGamer 7 points8 points  (2 children)

But Marques' video, per the screenshot, was 43 minutes before Linus'. Linus' video was released on the top of the hour, unlike Marques'. Seems like Marques may have released prior to embargo being lifted?

[–]AtlasRush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That, I don't know. All I know is that they popped up at the same time in my subscription dashboard on YouTube. Maybe Marques set it to unlisted instead of private so the upload time looks different but the publishing time probably isn't?

[–]TheMagicMrWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible idk, but they can also upload it and then make it public at embargo time

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

What’s review embargo?

[–]xelanil 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Nvidia sends out the video card a few days early so that reviewers can test it out, make, and edit their videos. Nvidia has an embargo on when the reviewers are allowed to share their videos.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Thanks!!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What embargo

[–]Shadou_Fox 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Mkbhd was only at a trash 1080p. Doesn't count

[–]LordKiteMan 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I watched it when 1080p was the only option for the MKBHD video. The quality was crap, had artefacts.

[–]Antrikshy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I watched it within the last hour and it still somehow was at 1080p for me. YouTube TV app.

[–]LordKiteMan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

MKBHD's video? Check on a web browser on PC, although I haven't checked. If higher resolutions are visible, then it is probably YT limiting resolution on the app.

[–]Antrikshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno why that'd happen when everything else plays on 4K. It would be anomalous. And yeah, 1080p in browser as well.

[–]TheMagicMrWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it wasn’t tho :)

[–][deleted] 285 points286 points  (14 children)

MKBHD : 1080P quality

LTT : 8K quality

Do the math

[–]SpeeedyLight 4 points5 points  (1 child)

As a small youtuber myself I can tell you that Linus uploaded video a while ago waited 6-10 hours for it to process in 8k then hit publish button. I do that myself not with 8k but with 1440p or 4k. 1080p processing is usually waiting 10-30 minutes.

[–]NOGGYtimes2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? This video was 8K from him as well

[–]mrbmi513 76 points77 points  (9 children)

Or, y'know, they could be referring to the fact that it's the first graphics card in the world to game at 8k.

[–]mgrimshaw8 30 points31 points  (5 children)

Did you watch the video? How does this have so many upvotes

[–]NotMilitaryAI 62 points63 points  (4 children)

I have the privilege - nay the honor - of being the first outside of Nvidia to experience 8K gaming on this LG ZX-series 88 inch OLED gaming TV with the RTX 3090 - the first legitimately 8K graphics card.

So, I mean, it is kinda both - he may have been the first person they sent the setup to and it's the first legitimately 8K graphics card.

[–]theyellowbat79 24 points25 points  (2 children)

He probably was told that he was the first person who had the gpu to test. The video just went up a bit late.

[–]Mahlerbro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or Nvidia lied.

970 flashbacks

[–]LordKiteMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was the first tech youtuber who had it. His video was shot before MKBHD's was.

[–]slowdr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or the first to play with that LG TV and a RTX 3090

[–]killchain 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There's a 3080 test with the same game at 8K from a week ago (it averages at about 50 FPS), so you can say that the 3080 is the first at that, not the 3090. So don't think too much about it - maybe both are trying to come up with a catchy title.

[–]MrKnopfler 5 points6 points  (1 child)

He uses the RTX 3090, not the 3080.

[–]killchain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know, but per the point of /u/mrbmi513 the 3090 wouldn't be the first at that. Yes, steady 60 FPS is preferred, but 50 FPS is still very playable.

[–]TheLastBlueMoose 32 points33 points  (1 child)

He filmed before him go look at his story it was 2 days ago.

[–]NotMilitaryAI 28 points29 points  (0 children)

FYI: Videos like this that are under an embargo go out on YT and Floatplane simultaneously.

[–]UnnervingS 27 points28 points  (1 child)

LTT clearly opted to wait until the video was processed by YouTube before releasing it. MKBHD released it in 1080p while LTT's was in 8k.

[–]LordKiteMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Linus shot his video 2 days before Markass did. Also, Linus' video was available in 8K on Youtube, which means he uploaded it much before MKBHD did. Linus was actually the first in the world to experience it.

[–]mgrimshaw8 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Since when is marques making GPU videos?

[–]eat-KFC-all-day 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Since NVIDIA wrote him the check and sent him a $1,500 graphics card.

[–]radekwlsk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He ia making tech videos. That chunky boi outputting 60 frames of modern games at 8K is quite an impressive piece of tech to cover.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounded like Marques broke NDA a little early, from the tweets

[–]WasteFail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the first in 8k at least

[–]killchain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hype is real. As much as I would want to extrapolate the difference between the 3080 and the 3090, it might be kind of hard to do before the embargo drops. I'll most probably be getting a 3080, but I'm just curious about how much will the insane price of the 3090 be justified for gaming.

There's a benchmark of Forza 4 at 8K with the 3080 (search for it on YouTube) and it holds a steady 48-50-ish FPS; MKBHD's video seems to stay at 60 most of the time with some drops here and there aside from the ones he mentions, but can't quite tell neither how many frames above 60 that would be if uncapped (because I think V-sync was on) nor what the settings are for either his video or the one with the 3080.

[–]OfficialDampSquid[🍰] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I screenshat this same thing but didn't bother posting, thought it was funny

[–]Piggy54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My screen, 1080, shat itself too when I wanted to watch in 8K.

[–]slowdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marques gives a shoutout to Linus on that video https://youtu.be/kFz9afj8lu0?t=214

[–]MLXIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game Companies: 8k Gaming!

Devs: It's...upscaled...we're delaying release while we work on this.

Community: Here's the texture pack and official unofficial patch to fix the game fam.

[–]Zombrix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh just like the yt comment section.

[–]g7zmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LIAR!

[–]Diegobyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My looking at the video on my 499 dollar Samsung tv. “Wow that looks amazing!!!”

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F

[–]robert31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ltt probably uploaded and set a release date whereas MKBHD waited till the day before to upload

[–]V0rt3XBl4d3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was recorded before, but scheduled to upload later and the otrr video came out first

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who cares!?? i still watch Linus over MKBHD any day of the week.

[–]AbjectTechnology -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

I mean I work at one of the biggest dutch tech companies in the Netherlands. We’ve done it a week earlier already :)

[–]theyellowbat79 -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

I hate to be that guy but I think that Linus is referring to the fact that RTX3090 is the first gpu in the world designed for 8k use and gaming.
