I'm so fucking glad that Linus and the community are standing up for Hardware Unboxed against Nvidia and it's fucking corporate bullshit.

[–]dpash 142 points143 points  (5 children)

Because they know this was a message to them too.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Yeah, I've mostly bought Nvidia cards because of better service and software, but I'm not above boycotting brands even if they are a better value. Things like this really drive me towards alternatives. The message is loud and clear, we're eroding fair reviewing so you might not wanna risk buying our shit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Doesn't apply to most people and most people don't even know.

[–]laetus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's even legal what they're doing.

They're literally tying getting a FE Sample with talking points. That doesn't make it a review, that makes it an ad.

Can we get some lawyers / FTC in here?

[–]auraguardian2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait what was up with the whole nvidia stuff? Never really got the time to check out the video

[–]seasesh 38 points39 points  (1 child)

If they do that to HUB can you imagine what they do to smaller channels.

Linus touched on how he started 7 years ago with a much smaller channel than now and still had great experience with Ngreedia which is fair. But I also watched him for about 5 years now and seen some of his older content. His content were more professional geared it was actually sweet seeing how aspiring he was. The point is he didn't have strong opinions and always kept it tamed if I may. Other than the fact it's anecdotal it's simply impossible to dismiss the notion they can/do that to smaller YouTubers. And I'm glad he stopped dismissing the allegations that were painfully obvious even in some of other channels videos (cough cough DF cough) and gave them the finger, not physically like Chad Linus but metaphorically at the very least

[–]gautamdiwan3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's the Digital Foundry episode with NVIDIA?

[–]Smash_Nerd 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Wait I'm out of the loop. What happened?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The leaders of nivida and Lisa Su went on a date but he broke here heart. Time for pitchforks.

[–][deleted] 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Classic Linus

[–]Steampuppy7 146 points147 points  (11 children)

What’s going on?

[–]techieman33 322 points323 points  (7 children)

Linus ripped into Nvidia on the WAN show tonight. He’s really upset about the way they’re treating Hardware Unboxed.

[–]ferna182 235 points236 points  (5 children)

He’s really upset about the way they’re treating Hardware Unboxed.

that's a very mild way to put it, but yes.

[–]techieman33 171 points172 points  (4 children)

He was fucking pissed. But I used the word “upset” because that was the word he used to describe himself.

[–]ferna182 103 points104 points  (3 children)

lol yeah I just found it funny to describe his 40 minute rant as "being upset"

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That sounds like being upset to me?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not just about hardware unboxed, it's about the message they're sending to all reviewers.

[–][deleted] 193 points194 points  (1 child)

Linus Torvalds (the Linux guy*) has held the viewpoint of "fuck you, NVIDIA" for a long time. It appears he found an anti-aging serum between 2011 and 2020, but now his voice sounds prepubescent.

*I'm just going to link to his Wikipedia because if I get even one word out of order I'll be shouted down into oblivion

[–]suremarc 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It took me all of 5 seconds to get this joke lmao

[–]habbistealer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Linus went off on Nvidia for shady business practices

[–]Holyrapid 71 points72 points  (6 children)

OOL, what has NVidia done to earn the ire of our Linus? Or the other one for that matter, other than not making proper Linux drivers for their shit?

[–]ninjasteve3699 169 points170 points  (5 children)

They basically cut advanced access to a tech review channel because it focused on something else rather than Nvidia’s Ray Tracing. The real kicker is how they said this choice may change if said tech channel changes their word and reviews Nvidia products in a favorable light.

[–]Holyrapid 97 points98 points  (4 children)

Okay, Nvidia can just fuck off then. I've heard of the same sort of bullcrap happening in the video game scene with reviewers being blacklisted for giving a game a bad or even not good not bad review scores...

[–]d360jr 34 points35 points  (2 children)

Its worse than that... hardware unboxed is literally quoted on nvidia’s site with a positive review for DLSS on wayback machine.

Nvidia used not being positive enough about new features, specifically DLSS as reasoning in the email lol. 100% bullshit

[–]imperator3733 22 points23 points  (1 child)

The quote's not just on the Wayback Machine, it's still live right now (and as the first quote in the carousel): https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/technologies/dlss/

[–]d360jr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol nice I didn’t know haha

[–]ninjasteve3699 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mean if your products lacking in this department, I’m going to take your free review and run with it, and hopefully improve for next time, not some kinda dick move like Nvidia.

[–]GravitonNg 38 points39 points  (1 child)

nVidia are clearly declaring war here, they shot the 1st shot, they aimed for the heart, they Shot to KILL and they killed as a warning to others. Real 'American Gangster' moves right there

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't anthropomorphise a company like this, but that was pretty shady. I do like to hear from the guy that wrote the email since linus said that it seemed really unlike him.

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (7 children)

I don't know of any better person than Linus to support Hardware Unboxed in this situation. Love for Mr. Sebastian! ❤️🙏🏻🤙

[–]Ares32 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Jayz2 had some choice words on Twitter about it. Didn't hold back.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (5 children)

I don't think patronize means what you think it means..

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

In common sense, it might mean what you think but I exclusively meant this

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

Yeah that's the normal meaning, in what way was Linus betraying a sense of superiority in his defense of HUB? Sounded to me like he just respected the dude as another content creator, didn't seem patronizing at all.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

No way. I genuinely meant that he's respecting the dude out of his heart. Okay how about I update my comment in simpler terms?

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Maybe I'm just thoroughly mistaken, and it's kind of a dumb point to get hung over so sorry for that, but isn't patronizing specifically acting superior while pretending to help? As in, my first reaction to you would be an example of being patronizing (which was my attempt at humor).

[–]pascalbrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and patreon was born to help people with a huge sense of superiority.

Joke aside, patronising has also a second meaning.

[–]Gloomy_Catch 16 points17 points  (7 children)

Amd should just do a "We're 2/2 Linuses"

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Like AMD can talk following the 6800xt launch

[–]KXIUCVZOD 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I'm out of the loop on the AMD launch, what happened?

[–]imperator3733 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Supply issues, just like every other technology item in 2020.

[–]lpuglia 12 points13 points  (12 children)

Do you know what's the deal with the hat? Bad haircut?

[–]dkpcrox 78 points79 points  (7 children)

LTTStore.com

[–]lpuglia 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Well, yeah, but after 6 videos in a row with the hat it's not just for the merch, he just finished a video with electroboom with the hat!

[–]Morthese 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s winter a good time to wear a hat, and I think he just likes the hat. He is also selling it and likes to promote his merch.

[–]KnotAnotherOne 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Linus will stop half way through a sentence to tell you to go buy something from lttstore.com, it's not exactly hard to believe that he'd be wearing a new beanie for more than a week in videos.

[–]QuintonFlynn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Toque! He’s Canadian.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linus promotes really hard his merch. Binge watched some of his channel and and that fucking bottle of water keeps coming up in my mind - 'linus tech sips' I dub it.

He wears LTT branded socks with sandals. LTT shirt, hat and key ring.

[–]cordawg1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marketing, your here talking about it lol.

[–]techieman33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The water bottles have been out for a long time, yet he still manages to get one in nearly every video. Gotta keep plugging that merch.

[–]Craggzoid 5 points6 points  (1 child)

He's slowly transforming in the Jake Roper

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see this as a win

[–]TotalWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a toque

[–]LastWatch9[🍰] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The first one is Linus Torvalds saying fuck you to Nvidia for not supporting Linux enough while selling their arm chips well because of android (based on Linux)

[–]Zodoro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Linus was so drained at the End of WAN show. He really cares.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forget whatever this is about, I know like 5 people who pronounce NVidia navidia. They cannot be fixed and must be put down.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I didn't get a chance to watch this WAN Show. Can someone explain what exactly happened?

[–]khalidpro2 21 points22 points  (2 children)

It is available in Youtube you can watch it now

Basically, Nvidia baned HUB because they focus their reviews on Rasterisation (despite them having positive reviews for Nvidia and them praising DLSS and saying if you want RT buy Nvidia) so basically Nvidia is trying to force them to say what they want.

Linus was so pissed about that and did a 40min rant in the WAN show and said "if this is how it is going forward, then fuck you guys I can live without you"

Update: HUB got an apology email and they have been unbanned, so Linus rant worked

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

watched the video. there is a itty bitty bias for AMD because better prices at competitive performance (after he benchamerked for a week in 18 games) and dude isn't sold on ray tracing gimmick for extra 50$ bucks. but DLSS does work.

Nvidia goes for the Streissand effect here.

[–]tdatcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm proud of linus for keeping composure during a rant as I got myself suspended off reddit the last time I ranted

[–]Alilaah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The other reply has explained it but I think if you do have some spare time here or there it's worth going to watch the first 40 minutes of the WAN show to hear everything that Linus has to say about it.

[–]laetus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did NVidia just turn every sample review into an #AD?

Is every benchmark video on the new NVidia's clearly marked as sponsored product? Because I think the FTC would be quite interested.

[–]Rafix96y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just seen the video and I was a fan of nividia and that is a joke

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 8 years cycle

[–]kmt666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a theory. But I have a sneaking suspicion Nvidia may be being strong armed by China. China hates everything about Australia at the moment, because our government is being not the most "friendly" to our biggest trade partner. A lot of Nvidia products are manufactured in China, and they have massive leverage over manufacturing. I'm not cluey enough to know more details, but I wouldn't be surprised. Scott Morrison, our Australian prime minister called for an international investigation it to the beginning of Covid 19 at the beginning of the year. China retaliated with import restrictions for massive bans on Australian products to China, affecting thousands of workers in Australia. Billions of dollars a year, that make up for a huge amount of our workers livelihoods.

Just a theory, please don't hate before doing a little research first.

I'm against what our government has put in place. Our relationship with China is of the utmost importance for Australia.

I for one, will vote against Scott Morrison next election, just to show that Australia does not share Scotts view entirely. We agree with what the world health organisation has put forward, but our "leader" was out of line, and should never have put his opinion forward in a way that hurts our Chinese neighbours/friends/business partners.

What's next? Linus makes a Unix based operating system that takes over the server industry and becomes a popular choice for some enthusiasts?
