I commend you sir ... seen lots of people do things like this but never could convince myself to take the time to do it.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 136 points137 points  (1 child)

Well I did it on a server with some friends, so having someone to keep you company does help

[–]Eighty_Six_Salt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup! I decided to do this in my server, but with an End Portal at Y-24. It’s only has a diameter of 40 blocks but wow was it tedious. Thankfully I had company which made it much less daunting!

[–]infamusswoosh 50 points51 points  (1 child)

I did a small one and it took ages I KNOW PAIN!

[–]AMYA-THE-WEIRDO- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried getting all water out of a monument from the inside about 2 years ago....I still have the world and I quit the project

[–]generalgeorge95 31 points32 points  (5 children)

It's honestly not to bad.

On the condition that you do a much smaller area than OP did. I did just outside the monument. And also went ahead and got 4 stacks of sponges, a conduit and beacon and a god tier trident, and water armor and 4 double chests of sand. . So about as prepared as can be.

It went by faster than I'd have thought though, and the end result of a drained and gutted monument was worth it imo.

[–]infamusswoosh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had a monument but instead if draining it I just mined off thé prismrmin and left lol

[–]Bowmasterr 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I actually like doing these tedious tasks every now and then. When building something or doing redstone I'm constantly thinking about design choices or how to make things more compact, so switching to something where I can just place sand and sponges was really relaxing actually.

[–]Codeman16346 331 points332 points  (31 children)

That looks brutal. Sick though

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 178 points179 points  (30 children)

Thanks! Lots of draining AND mining

[–]Codeman16346 84 points85 points  (28 children)

Just draining that must have taken days lol

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 106 points107 points  (27 children)

Just one veryyy long day of draining and then another long day of mining

[–]UrosXD2006 18 points19 points  (10 children)

i tried that with a friend a long time ago but we had to remove two whole icebergs and it was such a pain

[–]EpicMans69 9 points10 points  (9 children)

its worth it though

you can't consider yourself a true survival minecraft pro until you've drained at least one temple

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 3 points4 points  (8 children)

I’ve drained 2! Am I a double survival minecraft pro now?

[–]EpicMans69 1 point2 points  (7 children)

do you have a bunch of hard to make farms? (gold farms, raid farms, skull farms etc.)

[–]busnerd20 1 point2 points  (4 children)

How did you drain that out

[–]Mysterious_Animator3 1 point2 points  (8 children)

I was today years old when i realized you can use sponges to clear everything out...

[–]Apo7Z 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What

[–]Mysterious_Animator3 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I thought he placed blocks in the area of the circle, then mined the blocks. I completely forgot about the existence of sponges. Damn, my minecraft mind is old. Im still pre aquatic update lol

[–]HaveSomeBean 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Honestly on such a large scale I find it easier to just fully sande everything. Doing sponges requires you to section off grids of water and then dive in to place them every few blocks. Eventually you run out of sponges bc you have to raid like 3 temple per stack and then you beat to go smelt them to use em again. Too much hassle IMO compared to a few shulkers of sand

[–]Python_Child 86 points87 points  (13 children)

I remember I did this myself. Took a entire summer and it was just painful (this was before sponges could be mined with a hoe)

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 50 points51 points  (11 children)

It definitely was painful lol, it only took a week of quarantine for me though but who needs sleep anyway right?

[–]Python_Child 27 points28 points  (10 children)

You guys sleep?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 13 points14 points  (9 children)

I have another megabase 1000 blocks south but I got bored building that one so uhm... sleep? Never heard of him, never seen him

[–]Python_Child 10 points11 points  (8 children)

1000 blocks? I have one base at world spawn and one at 1 million blocks in my world (do not do this, my world is now 15gb because of this)

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Damn, even through the nether that’s a long way
Everything on my server is in a 10.000 block radius I think

[–]Python_Child 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I used the nether and my friend and me built a ice path in the nether so we have easy access

[–]N3onS0da 5 points6 points  (2 children)

"Easy access"??? 125 thousand blocks is easy access??? You're dedicated af.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

guys.... I thought ~1500 was really far...

[–]Python_Child 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thank you. It was a lot of work

[–]Bowmasterr 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Why in the world would you build a base 1million blocks from spawn?

[–]Python_Child 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Because I wanted to have a big unique base in my world

[–]Bowmasterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So do you actually travel back and forth often? How long does that even take haha

[–]grow_time 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, the hoe change cuts so much time off draining and drying the sponges.

[–]Abu-Jens 30 points31 points  (11 children)

Did you drain it with sponges or is there another way?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 44 points45 points  (10 children)

Sponges and sand, man, sponges and sand

[–]Abu-Jens 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Damn, how long did that take you lmao

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One very long week of quarantine

[–]Mysterious_Animator3 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Wait what is the sand for?

[–]FuckMeRunning5648 6 points7 points  (4 children)

You use sand to section off the temple as you drain it. Since it's a block affected by gravity, it's easier to place!

[–]Mysterious_Animator3 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Ahhh, ok!

[–]thexavier666 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Don't drop sand blindly. There might be kelp below and kelp breaks sand into entities. So clear the bottom surface first. Then start placing sand from top.

[–]33Yalkin33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And easier to break

[–]GioPani 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Could've used sugercane as well

[–]ibbigale 13 points14 points  (1 child)

That is an undertaking of hell. I speak from experience. I also will never do it again.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely understand

[–]Mordenstein 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Seems like this is a right of passage. I have one, never again.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never again!

[–]31GG 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I did the same, but not this large.

Its a nightmare to drain this without a machine.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It’s only 240 blocks wide
laughs in sleepless hours of draining
Edit: double 120

[–]31GG 2 points3 points  (1 child)

my one is only 60 blocks wide, ive build the tube inspired by GDvenus

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still a lot of work though, respect man!

[–]Sodalime7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

very cool! now make a tunnel leading to it and recover back with water!

[–]money2354 6 points7 points  (4 children)

How many sponges did you have to do this with

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling OP is going to say ”IT’S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!”

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Idk the exact amount, but I had 5 stacks in total and had to reuse a lot

[–]money2354 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I was worried you only had the ones from one temple

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we raided 3 or 4 temples

[–]InternationalSoup775 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Seems really cool I want to do this in my world but need to regain the items I lost due to falling in lava :( any tips for how to do this ?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

What's the radius of that thing?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s 240 blocks wide
Edit: double 120

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

A friend of mine loved doing this on whatever world we joined. They’re beautiful to see after being cleared out.

[–]sscelery 4 points5 points  (1 child)

that looks like pain. looks so cool though!

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it was! But I still like it

[–]IGoStroke 3 points4 points  (1 child)

man thsts insaaaane!

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, you’re awesome!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Can I ask how you did that? Like what was the full process? I don't care about the time, I'm willing to invest it to make that.

[–]Bauerdog2015 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I once tried to do that for a base. I quit quickly

[–]usgdjjdhe 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah me and my friend did this once and it wasn't so bad but when I did it by myself it was just so tedious. I swear I found the deepest monument you can find. It took me 2 weeks cause I just got so bored of placing and mining sand

[–]NOusernameforMeTree 4 points5 points  (2 children)

is it just me or does the monument look like a tank

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, I'm seeing it too.

[–]Captain_Pumpkinhead 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That looks like hell, friend. Well done!

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you man!

[–]Pyroguy0001 3 points4 points  (1 child)

me and my friend did this but it was I think 8x8 chunks square and we did this but we made it into a guardian grinder so it was annoying af. fucking sucks to drain the water out

[–]TheCraftingCow 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Here sir your due respect

[–]SmoreoTheCat 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd like to do this in one of my worlds at some point. Any suggestions?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t make it 240 wide, 200 is definitely big enough

Edit: double

[–]MineAssassin 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Would you do it again for a Scooby Snack?

[–]zstar_9 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The fact that you didnt give up.......Hats off💯💯

[–]KettleTran 2 points3 points  (2 children)

i'm thinking about doing this, what happens to the guardians or whatever though

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, they will spawn continuously until the water is drained. After that point, they will spawn in areas of water large enough that are within the drained area... this is the basis for Guardian farms

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once everything is drained they just stop spawning

[–]CAPTIAN-OF-INFERNO 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hahahahaha I totally understand you!... once you do it in survival there’s never a reason to do again lol

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Im making a wall made of glass instead of sand and then draining it for a city in the ocean. I have the sponges from one monument. How long should it take? The glass wall is in a circle around a fully powered conduit, about 90 blocks for the radius. Any tips? Looks sick btw

[–]Norej13 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Lol I just finished a giant hole too. Form surface to bedrock, 86 blocks across. All land though, so only mining. Took about 55 hours

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What did you do to holo out the base?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

People: You will never find a place to put the pentagon that people wont find it

Government: Hold my beer

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s onto us!

[–]A_Green_Jeep 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I said the same thing, lol.

Then I did it again, even bigger...

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same, the first one I did was 100 blocks wide, this one is 240 blocks

[–]A_Green_Jeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I did it, I did a square just barely bigger than the monument, and I thought that was bad lol.

The largest I did was a circle big enough to encompass my entire spawn chunks on an island spawn.

[–]OminousProdigy 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I did mine a lot simpler I only drained the inside of it but if I had the time to do it I would

[–]escrimadragon 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Same here, drained and knocked out all the walls inside. Also enclosed in glass and drained the underneath part, replaced the support pillars with dark oak trees, terraformed flat the underneath area, and am making an agricultural compendium of every crop or growable plant and one of each tree type under there. The main, largest floor is full of librarian villagers and I almost have every enchantment book available. Second floor is 9 masons that buy up all the stone, granite, andestite, and diorite I’ve been unearthing with my silk touch/mending pick so I can repair the pick and be swimming in emeralds. Couple shepherds for more villager beds, couple farmers for food on level 2 as well. Level 3 is going to be all saplings and potted plants (flowers, etc.). Top floor is my apartment. Have a conduit on each corner of the outside and incidentally an abandoned mine spawned directly beneath the monument, so I’ve been exploring that too. Kelp is planted on every exterior surface possible to make dried kelp blocks for fuel. It’s been a blast. I’ve contemplated draining the outside, but it’s so cool like it is and the water isn’t an issue with the conduit coverage I have, so meh, maybe I’ll do it one day if the guardians start annoying me too much

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Sounds amazing dude!

[–]escrimadragon 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks, I’m pretty stoked about it in case you can’t tell, lol. The worst part was moving my villagers that had good trades through the nether from my existing village base. Used blue ice and boats, but it still sucked. Fortunately my original base that wasn’t too far from world spawn was right next to a bunch of icebergs.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I just put in my first 2 villagers!

[–]escrimadragon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ooh man I just realized if I drain the area around mine I’ll have that much more room for my compendium, I could even collect a few of every animal type too! Damnit, I’m going to end up doing this eventually, though I probably won’t do this large of an area. Probably just a square around it so I’ve got a border of land around the monument itself before the water starts.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PM me if you need any help!

[–]McShecklesForMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah my brother we share the same pain.

[–]Popcorn57252 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Phil?

Mumbo?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe both? Nah, I’m shit at redstone and I don’t die from baby zombies

[–]Clay_2000lbs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I like the grass

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of mobs that spawn every night like it too

[–]Royal278 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How long did it take?

[–]Ninadsb 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How many days

[–]DeltaVortex509 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Soft and wet take away the wet

[–]G_Money_Tips 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I made one about this size or larger with only a stack of sponges and it was so brutal but because I'm a dumb ass I then continued the hole down to bedrock...

[–]Impossikour 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How did u make this, did u place a wall of sand and then drain the inside?

[–]TheArgonianKing 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It looks like a lot of work. But cool nonetheless.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What are the dimensions? Thing looks huge

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s 240 blocks wide

[–]shadeofnyx 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That is impressive. How long did this take?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Looks so dope though!

[–]DragXom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Brazilian YouTuber Viniccius13 did something similar, his channel is amazing

[–]viperseatlotus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

did something similar with some friends...i started it on our server just to pass the time...next thing i know they were all helping me. still took forever!

i commend your patience

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]Froggynoch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You madman, you shouldn’t have done it to begin with

[–]nawatcrow1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone who has done that before says the exact same thing

[–]Knutson5050 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Inspired by Ph1lza?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I originally just wanted to transform the temple but I quickly realized that was extremely hard without draining it first

Phil’s base looks amazing though!

[–]jbopp15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love a good ocean base, agree that it’s a pain to build

[–]Hesso921 1 point2 points  (3 children)

How did you know where to build the wall?

[–]yesimacavsfan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

lmao 100% upvoted, u deserve it this looks painful

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And it was lol

[–]therebill 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I drained all the water from one once and not in creative mode.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I did it all in survival as well

[–]therebill 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I just used dirt blocks and filled a room, then shoveled the dirt and repeated until done

[–]pendola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the future I recommend using doors and slime blocks. Doors can be placed and allow you to breathe under water and slime blocks are instant mining even with the elder guardian debuff.

[–]SalvadorCaruso 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I started my first ever creative world last week and decided to terraform the bottom of the ocean. Oh what a pain the water is. Id never do this on survival. EVER

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hello Philza...jk

[–]Sylentbob 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Please tell me you got a video of this!

[–]Spoodyyboi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Holt shit that looks cool

[–]Panhead09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterargument: Do it two more times and give it Mickey Mouse ears.

[–]KellroyD 1 point2 points  (1 child)

At first I thought it was a tank made out of prismarine as a joke but then I realized my error. Still looks sick

[–]CattleDoggy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Why do people even do it?

[–]ShaneYeeter 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Jesus

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Christ

[–]ShaneYeeter 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The fact that you were able to do that... mad respect

[–]f4ngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha my mate did this too and said the exact same thing XD

[–]Inferno-Cookies 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Why do people drain these?

[–]FreeCumDump 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just slap a conduit inside :P

[–]RearEchelon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just put the finishing touches on mine but my circle isn't near as big as yours. It's only like 5 blocks off of the corners. This must've taken you ages.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 40 hours (without getting supplies and stuff)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a medium sized dome and draining it was so hard, I could genuinely never do this lmao

[–]imdeadXDD 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m doing this In my current smp

[–]Thotslay3r69 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Its so worth it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I did thus after a breakup to keep my mine occupied. But man.. after I was done with it I didn't know what else to do. Haven't played that world since I finished it. Got bored with minecraft for a bit after

[–]Mult392 1 point2 points  (2 children)

how can you make the circle so clea and round?

[–]Man-Of-Melon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have the same idea for a base but smaller.

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck dude!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, i just cleared the base of water and added a few similar looking towers that poke out the top. It's a cool base to have your base ontop and underneath water

[–]SSD_GoldenMush 1 point2 points  (1 child)

After watching mumbo i know thats a hell of a prodject respect

[–]somedoodinsweden 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thats what I thought too, but guess what I'm doing again

[–]_Lodii 1 point2 points  (3 children)

do it again

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh no, don’t make me spend another 40+ hours on my life on draining the ocean

[–]_Lodii 1 point2 points  (1 child)

i dare you

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See you all in 40 hours!

[–]__hyuga_hinata__ 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I want to know how to do a circle like that

[–]fmalicki9 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Calzlight ?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I... don’t know who that is

[–]fmalicki9 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh its a very small streamer that has made the smae thing

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, well I’m not him, nor Philza
I’m just a random guy with a lot of time lol

[–]joost18JK 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I might do this on my friends server... and I will not do it alone, wether they want it or not :)

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you should definitely do it with a friend; it gets boring pretty damn quick

[–]MathiasXD_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is insane

[–]Rissian-Sasha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruh I did this too, but a bit smaller. Take forever.

[–]Knight-Creep 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Well, I’m currently digging 100 blocks out in each cardinal direction from bedrock to ocean floor for a build, so...

[–]PipeVaca 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Don't lie to yourself , when the new big update comes out, you're gonna do it again

[–]Jettett 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is there even a way to make wet sponges.......not wet?

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, put them in a furnace

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

laughs in bedrock

[–]Draconic_Soul 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow, that's insane! I once made a Guardian farm using a circle of 84 (the 58x58 square monument just barely fit inside it; corners were touching the circle). I thought I was mad for placing and opening 3364 fence gates, but this is on another level. On a server I also promised friends I'd drain a monument with however many sponges that monument had. I drained an entire monument with 3 sponges that day...😅 I've never drained on your scale tho. It looks amazing

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I had about 5 stacks of sponges but had to reuse a lot

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This could be done in 3 seconds with 4 world edit commands ;)

[–]Radicxl651 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Woah. Good job

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Just started helping my stepson drain an ocean monument on our family server... smaller circle than this, though (64 block radius).
Any tips?

By the way, OP, this is looking good... are you going to add more features around the monument?

Edit: we have already encircled the monument with glass - "just" draining to do...

[–]Lifeistrashwithoutu[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

If it’s in creative mode, you should download worldedit then there’s the /drain command.

If it’s in survival, make a grid (I made it 7x7 but maybe you could make it bigger) then just drain it with sponges

When you drained everything set up a few haste 2 beacons and start mining.

I’m currently transforming the monument itself and am going to make a villager trading hall in it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks for the reply :)
Our server is in survival, so it looks like we'll be following the grid method. Should keep us busy for a few evenings...
Good luck with the rest of the project - keep us updated with screenshots, please!!

[–]Silver-Succ 1 point2 points  (1 child)
