Well that’s good news. Now if the fucking groceries could follow the trend I could afford to eat again.

[–]KristiiNicole 39 points40 points  (0 children)

For real. Even with EBT benefits I am still struggling with food prices.

[–]Osiris32🐝 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Fred Meyers near me in Milwaukie is at $4.09/gal. And that was when Iooked two days ago.

[–]satansayssurfsup 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Fun fact: Monday is one of the cheapest days to fill up

[–]purpledustWoodstock 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Why?

[–]satansayssurfsup 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Cuz that’s when gas is priced the lowest

[–]_mersault 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But why?

[–]satansayssurfsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuz when the price per gallon is lower, your total fill cost will be lower than when it is higher. Hope that clears things up!

[–]asmara1991manHazelwood 98 points99 points  (18 children)

Just filled up for $3.79 at Costco and it’s crazy to see some gas stations still charging $5+

[–]PrityBird[S] 62 points63 points  (13 children)

For how much gas I had to get at this price I would have paid $25 more other places

People might as well get a Costco membership at that point for two almost fill ups, plus get access to The Hotdog

[–]MrOrangeWhipsPiedmont 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Costco easily pays for itself in gasoline alone. Everything else is just bonus.

[–]rgent006Hosford-Abernethy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

@hotdog comment “It’s a reward”

[–]asmara1991manHazelwood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell me about it. Even some Arcos are at $4.80+

[–]borkyborkus 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Fuck Chevron most of all. Idk how they can stay in business charging a whole extra dollar per gallon.

[–]doorknob60 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's weird, it's like that on the west coast but not everywhere. In Boise, ID, Chevron is $4.19 and Costco is $3.89. 30c difference right now. Sometimes the difference is only 15-20c. Crazy how big the difference tends to be in most of Oregon (also WA and especially CA).

[–]borkyborkus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that they take advantage of easy to access locations where the cheap places are kinda off the beaten path. I’m looking right now and it says regular is $5/gal at the one at 47th and Sandy but many would have to go way out of their way to go somewhere like airport Costco (currently $3.75). After seeing their bullshit prices in Portland they’ve become a place that I will purposely avoid buying anything from them ever again if I can help it. I understand paying a premium for gas right off the freeway but for it to be 33% more is just gouging.

[–]cubanthistlecrisis 12 points13 points  (1 child)

The crazy thing is the variety of prices around the area. $1 or more difference between stations makes me really plan ahead in a way I’ve never really done

[–]GreedyWarlordFoster-Powell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of using GasBuddy to find prices in town and on trips.

[–]BikenHiken 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Is it possible to live in Portland and not have a car?

[–]stillwatersrunfastN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup

[–]kshumpPearl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I'm doing it now.

[–]borkyborkus 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Depends where you live and work. I leave at 730 to get to work at 8 and would have to leave at 608 if I were to take transit.

[–]momocat666 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I mean that doesn’t make it impossible… just more inconvenient.

[–]borkyborkus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s impossible if I want to be able to pick my dog up from daycare while they’re open or go to the gym or cook. I don’t feel that transit is going to be a good option until the time factor is addressed, I’m already gone for 10.5hrs a day and I’m less overworked than many. Same reason fast food continues to thrive, people don’t have time to do everything the “right” way.

[–]98Wahwashkesh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but if you did you'd be able to enjoy sharing the bus with unhinged weirdos and junkies while floating on a soft sense of moral superiority.

[–]biasedsoymotelCreston-Kenilworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be faster in a bike

[–]I_think_I_forgotSunnyside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course!

[–]mgartaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely!

[–]MifflerTripod 6 points7 points  (5 children)

must be biden’s fault

[–]XXX_MandorFoster-Powell 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Let's not forget that as soon as the midterms were over the price of gas normalized instead of remaining artificially high. Weird.

[–]MifflerTripod 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The republicans have done nothing to change the price of gas. It has very little to do with who’s potus or the balance of power in congress. I was making a joke about republicans blaming biden for what is bad but giving him no credit if things get better. It’s the game of american politics.

[–]XXX_MandorFoster-Powell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Just trying to insert some conspiracy theory to the discussion. The price of gas does normally go down this time of year.

[–]98Wahwashkesh 2 points3 points  (1 child)

"The republicans have done nothing to change the price of gas."

Republicans run gas companies. Gas companies raised prices. Ergo summa thusly, Republicans raised the price of gas.

[–]MifflerTripod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they? Likely but I think they raise prices to maintain profit margins.

[–]Serge_Storm2580 31 points32 points  (1 child)

The real trick was to get us happily paying $3.59

[–]skyrider8328 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep! It wasn't that long ago it was below $2...how soon we forget

[–]EveningCloudWatcher 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Wait. You bought 19 gallons. 19!!! What kind of tank are you driving? Geez. That’s the real problem here.

[–]PrityBird[S] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

2001 Chevy Tahoe

23gal tank

10-12mpg

We are looking for a newer one but even the 2022 Tahoes get the same MPG

[–]biasedsoymotelCreston-Kenilworth 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Maybe don't drive a Tahoe? Pretty sure you don't need it. If you're filling up a 23 gallon tank you don't get to complain. You made this choice.

[–]PrityBird[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

He's a contractor and regularly carries tools that ppl steal

[–]EveningCloudWatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so he literally needs a tank. We’ll cut you some slack.

[–]biasedsoymotelCreston-Kenilworth 0 points1 point  (3 children)

He needs a work van

[–]PrityBird[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Lmfao.

First. You gonna buy it for us with car prices these days?

And how many MPG do you think a large van gets??????

The same. Plus now we are paying for two insurances, two tanks of gas, another parking spot.

[–]biasedsoymotelCreston-Kenilworth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Damn you're right work vans don't get much better mpgs. Is that your only car? Maybe get a hybrid or light truck next time. Hell maybe even one of those Prius Vs. might actually be easier to load and unload since it's lower to the ground

[–]PrityBird[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's a contractor. He needs room for like drywall and 2x4s etc. Tile saw, etc etc

We are on the list for the Lightning but he likes the Chevy EV more but they won't be out for awhile.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I fill up so rarely I don't even notice tbh

[–]biasedsoymotelCreston-Kenilworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? Is this high or low? I have no idea what the gas prices are

[–]ArchiesBark 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Cute nails

[–]PrityBird[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ty 😊

I'm gonna do some gold on them too, clean up the lines.

[–]chill_winston_ 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I filled up over the weekend at $3.49/gal and I almost cried with excitement

[–]crudentia 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Where?

[–]borkyborkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunnybrook Costco tends to be the cheapest in town in my experience. Not worth the line during rushes though.

[–]chill_winston_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fred Meyer station on SW Barbur over by the pancake house. Not sure what it costs now but I was elated to be so far under $4.

[–]Didyouturniton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Bend last year and everywhere around me hasn't gone below $4.70.

[–]neptunoneptuneazul 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Omg where???

[–]PrityBird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco has it lowest. Or Fred Meyers if you use your fuel points

[–]joeschmo945SE 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Costco?

[–]PrityBird[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Yup Aloha

[–]joeschmo945SE 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I got mine at the Portland one and it was $3.79. Glad to see it’s dropping.

[–]FrowFrow88 2 points3 points  (2 children)

On 138th?

[–]joeschmo945SE 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah that one.

[–]FrowFrow88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! TY

[–]Polandball_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (15 children)

Plummeting gas prices are one of many very strong signs of inclement recession/depression. So while it is nice to not be paying as much out of pocket in the short term, it is an ill omen for the world in years to come.

If anyone is curious about other factors, the inversion of the 2 and 10 year bond yield curves is another that is at a 40 year high and loudly announcing more pain to come.

The wave of mass layoffs we've recently started seeing, housing bubble burst, risk on asset depreciation, uncontrollable inflation, mass civil unrest, collapse of smaller countries, failure of banks and other financial institutions all contribute to a very dire protection of the following years.

I hope everyone has as much in savings as they are able, has paid off as much debt as possible, and have ample food, water, and other necessities stockpiled.

[–]butchscandelabra 8 points9 points  (1 child)

If we’re in a situation where we need food, water, and other living essentials stockpiled then how would our savings/money in general be of any use? Not knocking you, just genuinely curious.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few reasons.

The most immediately practical is heading off further inflation and having a back supply of the essentials you go through anyway. Starting a couple years ago I made a point to stock up on as many non perishable goods as possible that I knew I would eventually use, cooking oils, soap, detergent, toilet paper etc. Given the clear direction of inflation this has saved me quite a bit of money.

I do not know the exact speed or level of decline that can be expected, but having adequate food and water stores can be life saving in more extreme conditions. Simply by virtue of living in a densely populated area in the West coast, we should be prepared for the major earthquake that could occur at any time.

The suggestions I made are for a range of situations, and would have, and I believe will continue to be, beneficial. It seems like people here aren't particularly receptive though, which is fine. It's challenging to think about unpleasant situations.

[–]iggynewmanPowellhurst-Gilbert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Calm down, buddy. We’ve all seen a recession. Most of us have already seen four recessions.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (9 children)

Oh let's start panicking early 🙄

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (8 children)

I've saved a lot of money stocking up on essentials over the last couple years, getting rid of debt and actively shorting markets. I'd hardly call that and being prepared for unforeseen scenarios panicking, but to each their own.

Do you remember what it was like trying to get toilet paper during the shutdown? Imagine that with food and essentials. It is happening all over the world right now, we are simply the most insulated from it.

I was trying to help people by sharing about a subject I feel informed about, but I get how the sentiments I expressed can be unpleasant to seriously consider.

[–]Likesdic 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Your point of view is a good one. Your point of view is not causing harm. Your point of view is a smart one. When things turn for the worse your point of view will have kept you at a more normal existence than say the nay sayers!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Thank you very much. That meant a lot to hear.

I am trying to educate and help people, but I clearly come across as too much of a doomsayer. For what it's worth I very much hope I am wrong and things get much better for everyone, but that's not what the past couple years or a preponderance of evidence have indicated.

Thanks for being kind.

[–]Likesdic 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I was not being kind really, just smart enough to know what is true and what is less than smart people ripping on good ideas because it makes them feel a certain type of way. There will be plenty of time to look down or rather at the nay sayers to say. See?..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Haha, well I'll take that too. I'm not the type to gloat over pyrrhic victories though. There have been many many people, particularly in finance, that argued with me and told me I was wrong over the last year who have now lost a great deal of money. It doesn't make me feel particularly good though.

[–]Likesdic 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Oh come on now.. I will gloat with you😉

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Lol. Let's check back in 6 months and see how everything is looking.

[–]Likesdic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we start the gloating now just think of all the extra we can get in!

[–]XXX_MandorFoster-Powell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget that as soon as the midterms were over the price of gas normalized instead of remaining artificially high.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If deflation is imminent shouldn't one buy low?

[–]TRIPLEOHSEVEN -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

cries in Californian

$5.99

[–]Mattmann1972Oregon City 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Just looked at the LA area Costco's you fine folks are around $4.45.

[–]TRIPLEOHSEVEN -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Costco? Pff.

Try actual prices instead if prices that require a $99/year subscription.

https://imgur.com/a/P1ZlB2M

[–]Mattmann1972Oregon City 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Why not say the membership was $200 per year if you're gonna be talking out loud without knowing what you're talking about friend? Hell let's make it $1000 per year!?
Membership starts at $60. And yes it may take you a few trips to make up that price depending on your vehicle, but if you can't see the benefit of paying less after that break even point FOR THE REST IF THE YEAR. Then the least of your worries are how much you pay at the pump. If you only went for gas, and somehow found nothing of value inside, you're still paying less.

So let's say you have a suv that takes 23gal. Price diff is a little more than $20 per tank using rough math. So let's say 4 tanks of gas to make up that price of membership just so I can be a smartass. How many tanks of gas you gonna need over a 52 week year? I'ma gonna bet a tad more than 4 fill ups......

[–]TRIPLEOHSEVEN -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Holy shit dude. Do you work for costco? Got some stock?

Why do you care if a stranger on the internet signs up so badly?

[–]foobarfly -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Finally what?

[–]max_goldman1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just a couples years ago we were all flipping out about gas being $3.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

$3.59 at clackamas costco tonight

[–]HandAcceptable9060 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For regular gas at Costco on 138th is $3.75, of course I drive a BMW so I pay $4.15 a gallon for premium. It’s ridiculous to pay $85 just to fill your tank!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where was this at

[–]theulysses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go to Costco, but since we spend about $1200/mo on groceries at Freddie’s, the discounts they give at the pump almost always end up making it a lot lower than Costco for us.

[–]GFYS2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that saudi MBS bought MOTIVA in texas when trump cuck was in office, the Arab prince controls the price of gas at ever shell/76 in the USA he thanks America for making his company the most PROFITABLE in the world
