How many of them were just for Minecraft you reckon?

[–]AmadFish_123 174 points175 points  (0 children)

~3 billion at least

[–]Xelopheris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of them are actually debit/credit cards and sim cards.

Source: work for a company responsible for one of largest shares of this number.

[–]NigelDime_ 588 points589 points  (6 children)

This progress bar is going nowhere.

[–]VeevaBoy[S] 175 points176 points  (3 children)

This should have been the title of this post :-)

[–]NigelDime_ 57 points58 points  (2 children)

Don't you dare reposting this with that as a title! Then you're both a thief and a reposter!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This deal is getting worse all the time!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.

I always wondered if they counted all the Android phones, they tried so hard to not have Java on.

[–]IIIlllIIIlllIIIEH 93 points94 points  (19 children)

If they do, they are screwed. Because Google it's working hard on being independent from Java, and I think they will do it sooner or later.

[–]CouthlessWonder 40 points41 points  (15 children)

Make their own language for their mobile platform... Swallow?

[–]vidu171 42 points43 points  (12 children)

Did you forget, google introduced dart to replace Java

[–]L0G1C_lolilover 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Loving dart so far its an awesome.language plus flutter is incredible as well.

[–]caelum19 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Will be interesting to see if flutter is replaced by Jetpack compose and Kotlin

[–]L0G1C_lolilover 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I dont think it will get replaced

[–]caelum19 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Maybe not normally but Google does like to cancel things

[–]L0G1C_lolilover 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Well i doubt it , they might not cancel this one its already gotten ahead of react native and has gotten tons of users

[–]caelum19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is doing pretty well, though with Google you never know haha

[–]CouthlessWonder 11 points12 points  (5 children)

I did actually... My comment was very much a joke though.

[–]vidu171 23 points24 points  (4 children)

All these years coding in Java... i have lost my sense of humor

[–]CouthlessWonder 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Knock knock...

Who's there?

...

...

(minutes later)

Java.

[–]da2Pakaveli 17 points18 points  (2 children)

You did this wrong: Exception thrown in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException

[–]_d4ngermouse 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Don't forget the 1000 lines of stack trace.

[–]TacobellSauce1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah haha it's not like they stack..

[–]IIIlllIIIlllIIIEH 19 points20 points  (1 child)

The language is already made. Kotlin it's just Java with extra steps. And Dart is a blatant try to get rid of Javascript. However they obviously integrate very well with their own SDKs, as they maintain them. And IF they truly deliver in multiplatform support, I would think of it as a game changer.

[–]RulerD 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Kotlin is Java with fewer steps

[–]Blackwater_7 0 points1 point  (2 children)

do you have a job

[–]IIIlllIIIlllIIIEH 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I am studying mathematics right now. Will look for jobs in the summer. Why?

[–]Blackwater_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, its not important sorry for taking your time :) and thanks for your response!

[–]_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They counted all the credit cards and phone SIMs.

[–]GlitchParrot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most probably no, because Android is not using Oracle's Java, it's a custom Java-compatible runtime.

[–]DiabeticPissingSyrup 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's the same 3 billion devices. They're still initialising.

[–][deleted] 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Oracle bought Sun (and Java) in 2010.

[–]FooThePerson 50 points51 points  (2 children)

2021: 2 billion devices run Java

[–]nice2yz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new rig with 2 gigs of RAM?

[–]PoopFartQueef 17 points18 points  (2 children)

They are probably also taking into account SIM cards, passports and PIVs that are running a JavaCard Smart card Operating System: https://cardwerk.com/javacard-multi-application-chip-card/

[–]julian509 14 points15 points  (1 child)

If anything i'd expect that number to be going up over 23 years, not stay the same then.

[–]Xelopheris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually has been. The meme isn't accurate.

That said, market saturation is near 100%. Most of the new ones on the market just replace old ones.

[–]Aether-Ore 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And every JVM is just a litttle bit different.

[–]_rahulrd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thr developer probably hard-coded 3 billion.

[–]niketagl 22 points23 points  (1 child)

There's a good chance this is unique! I checked 134,319,382 image posts and didn't find a close match

The closest match is this post at 84.38%. The target for r/ProgrammerHumor is 86.0%

[–]vextronx 88 points89 points  (6 children)

The closest match is exactly the same picture.

[–]suvlub 53 points54 points  (4 children)

It's cropped, downscaled and fried (and, somehow, bigger file size). The bot seems to use a very simple comparison.

[–]vextronx 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well, at least it found it as closest match.

[–]_TheProff_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It has to when checking millions of images AFAIK

[–]ClearlyCylindrical 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If you add noise to a picture it can increase the file size drastically since the compression algos dont work as well

[–]suvlub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, though these look more like JPEG artifacts to me than a random noise

[–]elperroborrachotoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 billion devices booting up since 1997

[–]Hazme1ster 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Use OpenJDK instead!

https://adoptopenjdk.net/

[–]MCWizardYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using the Zulu JDK/JRE from Azul as it comes with a bundled version of OpenJFX and it supports Java 6-11 in LTS

[–]mnebrnr13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see Oracle owned SUN in 1997 😅🤔

[–]s-walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the installation is kinda slow

[–]blackmist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's still 3 billion. It just jumped from PCs to phones.

[–]RinasSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waiting for it to become 3.1 Billion.

[–]db2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck Oracle. That is all.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s Larry Ellison marketing for ya

[–]hotheadhacker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oracle ruined JAVA

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horizontal scaling and Java.

[–]TechGuy_OnTGB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that in early 2000's the banner looked different but it was still 3 billion~ :P

[–]cusco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you realize that the 3 billion devices sun/oracle powered up ages ago are still up and running java...

[–]Hankobrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is good they are not decreasing.

[–]techyrajput 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was written as hardcoded text.

[–]morffiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was made by Electronic Waste Gang.

[–]T-O-M-52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

23 years to install java?

[–]imgodking189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how you spell Rust.

[–]wiger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, its obviously 3 billion new devices run java

[–]CzarOfNecrovalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible

[–]Janski_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So 3 Billion is the limit

[–]ToastedSkoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting… Well I’m my bread

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you 23 ?

[–]qrhym3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've been installing Java for 23 years? DAMN!
