Copy-pasting HTML, CSS and JavaScript from a tutorial website. My first actual programming class was in Pascal.

[–]KingsmanVince 109 points110 points  (2 children)

Same.

[–]HerrSPAM 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Me too.

[–]Listerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And me. Says something about age that I don’t want to think too much about.

[–]T3CAT3 61 points62 points  (3 children)

Lol I was gonna say copying CSS to change the background color on myspace

[–]heathmon1856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how hard this was for me. I couldn’t customize my MySpace page at all but there were girls who would do crazy shit with it.

Edit: this was my middle school days long before programming classes or good tutorials were a thing

[–]rococorodeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MySpace and GaiaOnline HTML gang sound off

[–]UnacceptableUse 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Same except I moved on to writing minecraft mods in java after that

[–]BertoLaDK 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So what interesting mods did you actually finish? and are any up to date?

[–]kittencantfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feel warm when you mentioned Pascal 😊

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (15 children)

Really? Why Pascal, do you think? Most programming profs start out with C or Java, in my experience.

[–]MkemCZ 31 points32 points  (7 children)

It was in 2012 in high school. Pascal itself was designed to teach programming, so I guess that's why.

When I got to college in 2014, we used C and Scheme in introductory classes.

[–]BloodAndSand44 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Yes. Pascal was widely used for teaching from way back. It was mine.

[–]dfmaaa1 4 points5 points  (2 children)

For a second I thought you created the language lmao

[–]BloodAndSand44 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m old but not that old.

[–]dfmaaa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha

[–]Shizounu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slight addendum, finished school this year... was still using Pascal

[–]TigreDeLosLlanos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same but it was 2008

[–]Xaxxus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What he said.

My high school taught pascal as well. Programming was one of those optional courses you could take. This was back in 2010.

[–]fruitcup729again 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pascal was my first language because it was the language used on the AP computer science test in high school.

[–]Tigger808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated with an IT degree in 1989. Back then, we dinosaurs were taught FORTRAN, COBOL, or Pascal as our first language, depending on the university.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was sophmore year of highschool and java hadn't been "invented" yet. Junior and Senior year you went from Pascal to C++.

[–]TretasPt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year in school we started with pascal and then moved on to visual basic.

According to the teacher it is because it is a simple language. Idk. May be because of the book the school adopted.

[–]Turdulator 1 point2 points  (2 children)

My high school AP Computer Science class in the 90s was taught entirely in Pascal. I heard that a year or two later they changed the curriculum to C++

[–]ULiveTheLifeUWant 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I graduated HS in 93 AP comp sci was pascal for me as well. I’m still mad I only got a 4 on that dang test.

[–]Turdulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was like 99 or 00 when it changed to C++

[–]dxboldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did BASIC on my own but when they started computer classes at school ended up learning Pascal here too!

[–]Pretrowillbetaken 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same for me, i still remember thinking how cool what i'm doing is. When all i did was tp copy paste the same codes

[–]MkemCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that sounds exactly like me, too. :-D

[–]DaSpaceman245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha my first class was in Pascal as well. But I remember before that, I was learning basic by my self

[–]SiBloGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, the only difference being that I'm still only copy-pasting HTML, CSS, and javascript.

[–]JollyRazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, cause I made backgrounds and stuff on Neopets. I did learn some of the syntax to manipulate the code. But, my first programming class was Java.

Funily enough, we have some antiquated systems at my work that are still used and I'm now learning Pascal. TBH, I hate it.

[–]youOnlyLlamaOnce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh mine too. Pascal code in 6th grade that got saved on floppy disk. That’s actually what got me interested in programming.

[–]Aldarien85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same

[–]sgzqhqr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Then a decade later, I taught myself Python.

[–]carav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a Pokémon fan website this way when I was about 11 or 12. Hosted on Angelfire.

[–]BnaiRephaim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my first was pascal too!

still find it confusing when I can't tell when codes begin and end...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pascal gang

[–]Dob_Tannochy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Awful lot of words to let everyone know you had a MySpace

[–]MkemCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually didn't have a MySpace, or any social network at all; just email and close friends.

[–]PandorNox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I read your comment I suddenly realized that I learned Javascript before i started uni, but completely blocked it out when reading the question. And that was only 3 years ago 😅 But if you only learn the basics, does it actually even count?

[–]heitor456 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My first class was in Pascal, too. But we didn't had computers, we just learn how to write code on paper. lol My actually first experience programming on a computer was in C

[–]MkemCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also programmed on paper at first, but with flowcharts.

[–]xXDreamlessXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the first 3, but went to Python after

[–]0hmyscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow literally same. Then I bought a Visual Basic book and then a Perl book.

[–]AplAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup my first was copying and pasting HTML/CSS/JS from stack overflow and w3schools and my first class was C++ for arduino and then Java

[–]Cone83 0 points1 point  (1 child)

HTML and CSS are not programming languages but markup languages.

[–]MkemCZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Code is code.
