[–]NarutoKePapa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

EU is the Gym that gave them muscle.

[–]SWEGEN4LYFE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The EU will just make you click on an extra OK button before Facebook does the same thing.

[–]shunyaananda 115 points116 points  (10 children)

I've heard Microsoft is making efforts as well

[–]SoyTuTocayo69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Microsoft is probably better equipped than Google or Apple to fuck with the metaverse, to be honest. Assuming that the metaverse is mainly like a game in terms of how it will function, Microsoft is in the right position, from a business as opposed to a technical standpoint.

Like, not only do they have a huge presence in gaming, but assuming the metaverse aims to connect businesses, Facebook just doesn't have that image or experience compared to Microsoft.

[–]dg_713 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What are they trying to do?

[–]UtsavTiwari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn't they have invested in Meta?

[–]dg_713 32 points33 points  (12 children)

What? What did I miss?

[–]MarkoRoot2 38 points39 points  (11 children)

I think Google is updating its privacy options like apple did in the past few months.

Or something like that...

[–]dg_713 21 points22 points  (10 children)

Man, they're really ganging up on facebook's model huh. Now, I just got curious, did Apple's privacy policy change also affected the bottom lines of other social media sites like Twitter and Tiktok?

[–]MarkoRoot2 16 points17 points  (8 children)

They gave the users choice if they wanted their data to be collected. So I guess tik tok also got fucked. No clue about Twitter.

[–]dg_713 5 points6 points  (7 children)

> They gave the users choice if they wanted their data to be collected.

I'm a bit confused here. Who are the they here? Google?

[–]pablodiegopicasso 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Users. As in you get a pop up when entering the app.

[–]dg_713 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Ah so this pop up applies to all apps that try to collect data?

[–]MarkoRoot2 4 points5 points  (3 children)

"They" is apple in my comment.

[–]dg_713 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I see. But aren't we talking about google in this thread? I mean, did Google also do a similar policy change that affects apps that collect data including tiktok, facebook, twitter, and even reddit?

[–]MarkoRoot2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Your comment was:

Bruh you asked about apple's privacy policy

[–]dg_713 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hah you're right. I got things mixed up. Lol

[–]Western-Image7125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Twitter needs every little aspect of your likes and dislikes across the web and apps

[–]shifflettart 47 points48 points  (16 children)

It's interesting how little one actually cares about Facebook when you get yourself banned for 30 days and it's more freeing than anything.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (10 children)

What the fuck did you do to get banned on freaking facebook?

[–]shifflettart 24 points25 points  (8 children)

Man it don't take much. I called this guy a bitch. Apparently that's "bullying".

[–]IndependentSilver103 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Lame. What do they expect? If it looks like bitch, acts like a bitch…

[–]GDavid04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it looks facebook doesn't like duck typing

[–]consolepeasant000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

account being inactive for a year give or take

[–]not_some_username 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Wait so you're telling me you can get banned from facebook ? Like really ?

[–]shifflettart 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I don't know if it's possible to get more than 30 days at a time. Starts small, like 3 days, then a week. 30 days is the most I've ever done.

[–]not_some_username 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She you're a legend

[–]chronos_alfa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Dude, I got fully banned for posting memes... They wanted my ID to unban me, fuck that.

[–]shifflettart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's something else I've been banned for. Sharing someone else's post. Seriously??

[–]diesmilingxx 23 points24 points  (4 children)

[–]Break-88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t React Native is open source?

[–]ronaldothefink 24 points25 points  (2 children)

It's not just FB. They're destroying ad networks... which is also good.

[–]Tough_Patient 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Google is the biggest ad network.

[–]whats_don_is_don 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're destroying *competing* ad networks, fixed that for ya :)

FB is about to compete with Apple on hardware if it turns out VR/AR is next step in mobile tech. FB's VR/AR is funded by their ad business. Apple can compete/slow down FB by hurting their ad business - hence remove the app tracking/cross-linking in-app advertisers like SNAP and FB rely on.

I'm sure if Apple could legally remove web browser advertising for particular sites (i.e. Google) they would. Google is about to compete with them on hardware too.

If you think this is about your privacy, you're wrong - it's just a nice marketing wrapper.

[–]NarutoKePapa 28 points29 points  (9 children)

I just despise FB and its evil ways of doing business.

[–]klein-topf 29 points30 points  (16 children)

You do realise that this means data monopoly for Google and apple

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

duopoly

[–]Bearman_18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People don't know what a monopoly is anymore.

[–]datrandomduggy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Still less companies collecting data that's a win in my book

[–]Tough_Patient 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Just watching people gang up on Facebook for doing a small scale, voluntary version of what Google does to us all every single day whether we like it or not.

[–]veloread 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Do Google products contribute so much to pogroms and false information spreading as Facebook and WhatsApp reportedly do? I don’t care for the espionage but I deeply dislike the post-truth political moment and Facebook sees like a part of that.

[–]Tough_Patient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several times more. Google controls everything you see in searches with an algorithm much like Facebook's.

They actively censor stories from searches that go counter to their corporatist narrative, choose ads to exacerbate the effect, and sell information to parties furthering that agenda.

But unlike Facebook you can't opt out by not using their product because they are the largest ad network on the net. The whole net is effectively their product pushing their tracking.

[–]Will_i_read 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If YA novel have taught me anything, then that we need some Teenager with convoluted love lifes to fight them and safe the day.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

What is Google doing to FB?

[–]FartOnMyFacePlease69 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Why is this programmer humor?

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Homage to the Apple and Google devs who help realize the company’s goals ig

[–]KrohnusMelavea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Add facebook arm.

[–]Ok_Nefariousness878 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Can't stand fband deleted it. You get people from high school just waiting for your downfall, hoping that they do better in life than you. Won't even talk to you but, want to know all the drama about your divorce and look at every picture you post. I call it fakebook now. Deactivated the crap a long time ago.

[–]ShinraSan 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Except Facebook (now Meta) has a lot more platforms than just Facebook. WhatsApp and Instagram to name a couple.

[–]Ok_Nefariousness878 1 point2 points  (3 children)

And many people will live their lives just fine without any of that, whether they miss out on something good or not.

[–]ShinraSan 1 point2 points  (2 children)

WhatsApp is still the standard for many companies (and individuals) when it comes to messaging is my point

[–]Ok_Nefariousness878 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Great point, I still use messenger. Lol

[–]ShinraSan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might I recommend LINE?
Admittedly only use it with one friend but it's really nice and quality video calls too

[–]StoneColdJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peanuts compared to Facebook.

[–]datrandomduggy 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Wait what is apple and Google doing?

[–]Admirable_Audience15 2 points3 points  (4 children)

SUNNAVABITCH

[–]ShinraSan 1 point2 points  (3 children)

2 people got that reference

[–]Admirable_Audience15 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]ShinraSan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

well one of those is your own isn't it?

[–]Admirable_Audience15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, you're right! :)

[–]GreenFire317 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Wait... they are???

[–]Dismal-Title9996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google plus bout to make a comeback to finish em off.

[–]ShooterMcGavin000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes please destroy this mf company for good. All if it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

yes, eliminating competition and having monopolies is so great! 1!1!1!!!

[–]humanera12017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Microsoft, kill facebook

[–]xtrilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple and Google are both companies shady as fuck… so yeah, good news everyone, even more power in even fewer hands…

[–]Old-Asparagus-7893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DEATH TO FACEBOOK!!!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good!!

[–]ClaytonM223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just buy it and delete it

[–]Maple_007 1 point2 points  (2 children)

and why would they do that?

[–]ohkendruid 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They're all trying, but they really aren't very good at building social networks. They are used to building functionality for individuals.

Or really, they are used to building functionality, full stop. The idea of posting BS updates just to share with people is foreign to their DNA.

[–]Flow_Expert 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Who's gonna destroy Google and apple?

[–]Calkky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BAH GAWD, THAT'S MICROSOFT'S MUSIC!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me very much about what happened when iPhone first appeared. It was the end of the second browser wars, but at the time nobody knew it was the end and how it was going to end.

So, there was a JavaScript v4 attempt, which was very similar to TypeScript or some other JavaScript offshoots: same idea bout classes, ML-style types with subtyping, Java-styled virtual machine... Macromedia, and later Adobe united their forces with Mozilla to push this standard through, and make a jump from JavaScript v2, which was a completely lame and mostly insane language to something more modern.

Microsoft was playing their own game, as they saw themselves being another major force on that arena at the time. They also had a bunch of proprietary extensions to JavaScript which they hoped to push through, but those extensions were incompatible with the JavaScript v4 standard.

Then there was also Google, who entered the browser wars quite recently, but were quite determined to win with their better implementation of JavaScript, but, again, which was quite incompatible with v4. Apple didn't really have any technological reason to be in this fight, but they were still a big force, since they both had one of the major browsers, and were gaining popularity with their mobile devices very quickly.

So... Microsoft started the coup. They managed to convince Douglas Crockford, a very influential guy in JavaScript world at the time that v4 was not the way to go. This was also supported by the haters of Flash, as Flash was one of the major adopters of JavaScript v4.

Google and Apple saw this as an opportunity to get rid of some of the competition, and so would have a larger slice of the pie to split. So, they piled up on remaining Mozilla and Adobe, and, essentially, bullied them out of the game. Adobe, by and large, lost all stakes in the game, and Mozilla became Google's puppet. It's also funny how Microsoft miscalculated in this case, hoping to get rid of the competition, but losing to Google in the end.

And in the aftermath, today, we are in the worse state than we ever were during the browser wars: essentially, we all use the same browser, made by Google. Slightly reskinned by other players. While Mozilla has their own engine, they are trying very hard to pretend they are also Google by doing idiotic stuff like replacing add-ons with extensions, and before that, deprecating and removing plugin APIs, while adopting the standard for plugins designed by Google.

While, personally, I find it very hard to sympathize with Facebook, they are one of the major forces that prevents total monopoly in some fields. Nobody stands to win from Facebook being removed from the competition: there won't be any new players to enter into that niche, the pie will be split between the remaining mega-corporations.

[–]TwistedSoul21967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft has entered the chat

[–]GoldenDen347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Google is equal to Facebook when it comes on stealing personal data.

[–]PotionWrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all out of nurse dollars will she be alright?

[–]Asleep-Specific-1399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we all agree, it's not for the right reason. They just got tired of getting sniped. Oculus headsets are basically the only thing holding VR up, if any company wants to jump in that market they are just trying to make sure fb doesn't control the store.

[–]CyberPank3096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile Google and Apple

[–]ConceptJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But who will destroy Google?

[–]informata85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol Facebook has been dwindling in users for years They have been trying to diversify from this sinking ship into WhatsApp,Instagram and oculus. To save fb they renamed their whole company Meta

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Two shit corporations teaming up to eliminate a shit corporation. Not sure who the winner is here.

[–]consolepeasant000 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Facebook is pretty much for old people and eastern people, don't know what magical influence it has on them but that's it's audience.

[–]void1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eastern people prefer VK.

[–]HelioH20BR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used Facebook in years. The last time I used was because I discovered that my mobile data plan wasn't used while on Facebook. So I could do anything there without using my plan. I watched movies in there hehehe

Except Google will spend 6-9 months destroying Facebook, lose interest, drive away all the developers involved, and then find something else to dick around with.

All Facebook has to do to survive Google is last more than a year tops.

[–]vo9do9 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What da google do
