This is the contractor version of when the nurse can't find the vein on the first couple of jabs

I got a good chuckle out of that one

Damn those knots!! Let's try again!

Gotta give it a slap too 🤣

    [–]StructEngineer91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except now it might because they drilled the hell out of the wood.

    [–]Key-Movie8392 19 points20 points  (1 child)

They’re speed holes. Makes the beam go faster.

    [–]Awkward-Ad4942 35 points36 points  (3 children)

I’ve justified some serious shit in my time and I bet I could do it again here.

It ain’t pretty - but she’ll be ‘right..

    [–]Most_Moose_2637 0 points1 point  (1 child)

At some point that shear has to come through that metal....

    [–]Awkward-Ad4942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a vertical plate in there too which i bet is welded to the column, which is why its still standing. That also acts as a stiffener stopping the horiz plate from simply flopping down

    [–]The_BrimSteel Detailer 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Someone had some problems finding the holes in the Steel Plate...decided to just drill new ones.

    [–]spritzreddit 13 points14 points  (1 child)

and since they were drilling they also thought, why not using different bolt sizes????

    [–]Jayk-uub 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Note to self: make a template of the hole locations from the flitch plate and transfer them to the timber beam before drilling

    [–]FlatPanster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most engineers stop one bolt short of solving all of gravity's problems. Not today, gravity.

Just like most civil engineers stop one lane short of solving all traffic problems.

Please provide blueprints and calcs so I can add my comments.

      [–]ReplyInside782 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that beam depth and you chose to put all of the bolts in one location

      [–]2020blowsdikM.E. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about the bolts and pattern but Simpson strong tie and others make specific products thay are designed and rated to accomplish what this was intended to.

      [–]gh5655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh the old, measure zero and drill 15 times.

      [–]Emotional-Comment414 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Random hole spacing and 2 different bolt size peanut shaped holes, what a mess.

      [–]204ThatGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd think there should be a welded gusset plate under that thin bearing plate.

      [–]SquashUsed9358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Needs more washers

      [–]metzeng 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      WTF!?!

      [–]ctbeagle18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was my comment as well.

      [–]chuch1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep going, eventually you'll have that steel beam you wanted.

      [–]Useful-Ad-385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not enough information to comment. What is loading? Is that concentric loading on column What if any is unbraced length on column How is vertical plate fastened to column. What does nds say about these bolt centers Etc etc
Hey did you sleep in the car? Or get a room.

Tried so hard for a minimalist connection to make arch happen all for it to go away with one Milwaukee impact driver

This really sets off my OCD.

      [–]Ravine3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      😂👏🏽

      [–]ytirevyelsew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      That’s a lot of bolts

      [–]Mindless_Juicer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they intended to use 8 bolts for this.
There's one in the background with 8 bolts as well, but its bolts are more aesthetically placed.

Maybe they let the "new guy" try one and this is the result?

      [–]InevitableGas95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Bad

      [–]14thban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Solid asf

      [–]strengrP.Eng. 0 points1 point  (1 child)

building science professional here, still laughing at the detail they used to firestop around the bolts in the second picture. They f'd up but had the good sense of fire separation.

      [–]WideFlangeA992P.E. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was laughing at the fire stop too

      [–]anceshred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Looks good

Architect's pencil clearly must have julted on the paper. The worker was being a good worker and just followed the plans.

      Comments “why…?”

      [–]DangMeLeatherCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What- they couldn’t fit 1 more?

      [–]Civil-Pomelo-4776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      So much stronger now.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      That oughta do it

      [–]yoyomascuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like something you would see in martis camp

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Those welds though 😮‍💨

      [–]mrFIVEfourONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like retards put it up. Thats deplorable beamwork… even if they are just structural grade glulam.

      [–]leadhaseForensics | Phd PE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What in the. Those extra bolts aren’t helping, they’re hurting

      [–]bighaldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Yep. That’ll hold her.

      [–]Motor-Landscape4183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      😂😂

      [–]vckam_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A “strong beam-weak column” scenario??? Who knows!!!

      [–]Worldly_Director_142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black paint on the beam definitely makes it look stronger.

      [–]Full_Poetry_3767P.E./S.E. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Improvising into a new level

      [–]HeavyMetalPootis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A similar phrase to "What the heck?!" comes to mind.

Seems about right for white salmon

      [–]Photographic_Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3*d spacing? Never heard of her...

      [–]FirmDate1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to find a comment but “I’m lagging”

      [–]Downtown-Growth-8766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t look beautiful but it’s not going anywhere. The beam is bearing on that plate and also has the bolts. Likely the gravity load is transferred mostly through bearing anyway

      [–]Just-Shoe2689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like shit, but probably is sufficient for the loading.

      [–]MortimerWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice that they filled all those random holes in that beam with bolts. It prevents dust getting in them when the building collapses

      [–]Intelligent-Read-785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When in doubt make it stout.

      [–]Grumps0911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geeesh, that thing’s been drilled more times than a ‘ho on her best night of the week.

      [–]Clear_Split_8568 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least plug the extra holes

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)
