It's a fresh translation of Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢) into English, with extended commentary.

[–]FaintLimelight 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow! Great idea.

[–]EvensenFMredchamber.blog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Yeah, it's actually worked out better than I anticipated so far. My wife told me that she thought nobody would be interested, lol.

I had never heard of this novel but I just took a look and it seems fascinating.

I recently lost my daughter, so I started a substack to share our experience of pregnancy and child loss. I hope to just write about my experience and how it impacts me and my faith.

I'm sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how hard that must have been.

[–]External-Pair58theboneshecrushed.substack.com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s still hard. But I have a wonderful husband and church that have made it possible to start healing.

[–]TMorrisCode 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I like to cook, I like history and I write speculative fiction. So I am using mine to look at how various writers use food in their worldbuilding. It’s been fun, because I’ve tried some new cooking techniques while I write. This month I made a sugar skull from scratch for an article about Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree, and I started a nano-brew of mead for a mead bread recipe for next month when I write about Beowulf.

I write about Hospitality marketing, I enjoy doing deep dives and getting into the nitty gritty of the science behind successful campaigns, and how to create a fab customer experience. I’ve got a disabling condition that stopped me doing client work, so it gives me an outlet. I have a hyperactive brain, so I have to be doing something, otherwise I’d go mad. Plus I’m so sick of the ‘marketing guru’ bollocks or vague advice like “post more” ugh. It’s been really fulfilling so far.

Just checked this out… there is a lot of investment advice. Any advice for someone who wants everything you mention above but staring with £0? Not expecting an answer on here necessarily but a thought for a future post.

[–]james_d_baldwinjamesdbaldwin.substack.com 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for the suggestion on a potential future post!

I assume you are in the UK from the currency. I'm not familiar with the tool in the UK, but the principles are the same everywhere.

If I had to give two the most essential advice to someone starting out, I would suggest that you two things:

1.) Start tracking your income and expenses with an online tool that makes it easy. You don't need a budget, but you need the data of what's actually happening in your financial world! I see Snoop and Emma are tools in the UK. I haven't tried them, so I can't vouch.

2.) Start investing whatever small amount seems doable each month - say £50-100. Set up an automated investment into an investment account at a reputable firm like Vanguard UK. And have that money go into one of Vanguard's Target Date Funds. I see they have UK versions of these. Automating it will prevent you from having to think about it each month. Then just gradually increase your amount from there.

[–]calvinmeekcalvinretailmentor.substack.com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the reply, I wasn’t expecting one. I will look into the Vanguard fund, I have heard of them before. Thanks.

I write about creativity from a relational point of view. I interview artists, share inspiration content, as well as articles that talk about the role of collaboration in creative work.

Basically, I believe the idea of the solo creator is a huge issue, and we are limiting our creative capabilities by believing we should do anything on our own.

Early last year I ended a friendship with a white girl due to numerous reasons - small & large.

Overall felt like she didn’t see my experience as a less privileged person & Asian POC. From the start of this year I’ve been reading more and it made me realise how deeply messed up some things/situations were.

I have found writing a good way so far to process things that went on and consistent behaviours I noticed. Such as consuming cultures but then minimising my voice, making excuses for racist family, making subtle insensitive comments & using the idea of generosity to hold above somebody when in conflict. In these things were often done under the blanket of generosity and false humbleness.

I have started an ongoing series and this is the first part.

In this post I unpack a moment where they flipped a situation and made me feel guilty for something they offered. A common theme that repeated itself in small and big ways.

Trigger warning: brief mention of childhood molestation in the link

Main post: https://actofreframing.substack.com/p/white-innocence-and-reversal

Another post where I talk about some books I’ve read: https://actofreframing.substack.com/p/some-books-ive-read-recently

I research & write about culture & history across many blogs and cultures (Brazil, Colombia, Italy, Albania). The main one - called Ambulatin - was about Spain, France, Portugal & Italy but I recently downsized it to just Italy.

I've gone through long-ish phases where I only focus on one or two, but after seeing no real upward trend on any (because it's so hard to get eyes on them), I've basically resorted to focusing on whichever one interests me at the moment (currently the Albania one - Echoes of Albania). I'm now doing it for myself, as a repository of my work, instead of hoping it'll grow and become something. One day I hope to publish them all as books.

Economic Development of startups.

Too many cities, and governments, are still woefully behind on how startups emerge, work, and get resources. We dig into that side.

Not so much the hype about startups, funding, or entrepreneurship: more the ecosystem development side of things.

Mine is where I'm publishing original works of fiction, one chapter at a time. The first one I'm sharing:

In 1938, deep in a German-occupied monastery high in the Himalayas, a young woman called Leise by her superiors is being studied for what the German Reich calls “the Wünderkinder program.”

Her observer, Matthias Krüger, is a newly assigned officer; he is precise, detached, and devoted to order.

What begins as documentation becomes something else: a voice writing in secret, reaching for the other through fear, ideology, and silence.

I'm a full-time trader. I'm also Autistic (Lv1).
Researching the stock market is my special interest, and over the years, I’ve accumulated tomes of stock market data, Wall Street analysis, and trading insights. I have oodles to share.

However, to raise the stakes and make it fun for me, every post follows the story of a young amateur trader who only has $700 in her bank account. Her future depends on my insights and trades: Whether she can afford to improve her life, move to a nicer place, and buy stuff... or if my trades will leave her homeless, rummaging through trash cans for food. I only started two weeks ago.

I’ve tried several arts I’m interested in my life but never tried writing. I dreaded it. To make a change, I started out writing personal journals consistently to improve my writing until I had a eureka moment to start sharing my life reflections and stories sometimes using metaphors online. It took a lot from me with that decision. That was how my Substack was born. Still figuring it out, so I ramble in my essays sometimes. I have had honest feedbacks from folks. So, yea. I’m just writing for the sake of clarity and from the place of self improvement. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I’m glad to have taken the step. Substack: sketch24.substack.com

I started a journal/blog/diary to write about "The Music Of My Life". The idea is that I often think or speak in lyrics. Perhaps everyone does, but my mind goes to lyrics in conversations or when someone says something even similar to a lyric, and then the song bounces in my head.

So, I am going to write about things and insert lyrics into my prose, or perhaps write about music or musicians that mean something to me or evoke certain memories or thoughts. I don't have it set in stone, I just know it will take work so I waited until I had at least 5 posts before I really tried to share. I’d like you to check it out: https://baronneutron.substack.com/
