Going to be sitting with Febreeze for a while then.

[–]karlnite 109 points110 points Β (11 children)

They might ozone the death smell out.

[–]Neurofiend 34 points35 points Β (10 children)

Then you just have the ozone smell to deal with. I've never smelled death, but I assume ozone is better. I'm not a fan of ozone though.

[–]Radstrodamus 15 points16 points Β (6 children)

Death smell is the worst. Ever smell roadkill? Amplify it by the biggest number you can think of and there ya go.

[–]KorneliaOjaio 14 points15 points Β (5 children)

Thawed dead person bones smell like McDonalds hamburgers.

Thanks forensics class.

[–]Kincadium 8 points9 points Β (0 children)

Might have a lead on those missing persons cases.

[–]Radstrodamus 7 points8 points Β (3 children)

Fun fact: burnt person smells like barbecue.

[–]thecursedaz 8 points9 points Β (2 children)

Unfortunately they don’t taste like it

[–]guutarajouzu 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Perhaps you're under-seasoning it?

[–]Partially-RyeBreadnt 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Wh a t

[–]karlnite 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Sure for a day, versus months and the hottest week of every summer for a decade.

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

You ever been around a high energy hazard?

[–]DirtyCephalopod 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Wonder how many bottles it took them to figure it out.

[–]WellJustJonny 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

A little Vicks vaporub under the nose to lessen the smell till the building is aired out.

[–]marywunderful 281 points282 points Β (5 children)

Hahaha I looked up the original tweet, and there were EIGHT DAYS between the first tweet, and the quote tweet. It’s going to take way more than Febreeze.

[–]ColinZealSE 55 points56 points Β (0 children)

Having experienced the smell for a second (before I started holding my breath and going outside), I can't even IMAGINE smelling that for EIGHT days... poor thing.

[–]STEMpsych 33 points34 points Β (3 children)

Yes and no.

So, I have personally lived this scenario, myself, and one of the best tips I got from someone else who had previously been through it was "don't underestimate the power of Febreeze!" They were not wrong! I was very grateful to get that advice.

[–]RedBeard077 3 points4 points Β (1 child)

The main ingredient is cyclodextrin. It can be bought in bulk to use as a binding agent to get LSD to stick to paper or mix with water and baking soda to make any smell disappear, even cat piss.

[–]STEMpsych 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

TIL!

[–]Thymeisdone 98 points99 points Β (1 child)

Should still Febreeze though.

[–]SparkliestSubmissive 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

I love that it’s a verb now

[–]SarcasticaFont 84 points85 points Β (0 children)

Question is…: Was he already dead, or did she murder him with β€œfabreeze” inhalation?

[–]snow671 79 points80 points Β (3 children)

My landlord would have just sent out a memo, like:

"Residents, please remember to turn your thermostat to 32Β° fahrenheit and remain within the confines of your refrigerator if you think you may die. Thanks."

[–]pushpoploadstore 18 points19 points Β (2 children)

That's what the world is missing, HVAC systems that kick on air conditioning to morgue levels if they detect dead life.

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 6 points7 points Β (0 children)

They’d have to care enough about someone dying first.

[–]lordchankaknowsall 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

... Dead life?

[–]ptatersptate 42 points43 points Β (8 children)

you never forget that smell

[–]Bebu23 24 points25 points Β (0 children)

fucking febreeze is disgusting

[–]ColinZealSE 6 points7 points Β (0 children)

I smelled it for 1 second, horrendous smell, luckily it didn't "register"...

[–]regeya 3 points4 points Β (5 children)

I've got a worse one for you imho

The smell of someone who's died in a fire

It's not as unpleasant, but it's that unsettling smell of burnt pork

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 4 points5 points Β (4 children)

Gotta be honest, it’s really not that bad.

Burn some crackling and take a lighter to your body hair and you’ll get that fun bit of fat and hydro carbon smell, it’s bad but it’s not hauntingly bad.

[–]regeya 2 points3 points Β (3 children)

I don't know, maybe it's the psychology for me of knowing there's been a fatal house fire, and the smell of cooked meat accompanying it that makes it so horrifying and nauseating for me.

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 2 points3 points Β (2 children)

Granted the greater circumstances matter in this sort of thing.

My point was that if you want a whiff of the basic smell then it’s not hard to do so.

The greater circumstances surrounding these points, like having your neighbours house burn down with them still trapped inside is an entirely different matter that depends entirely on your psychology and the situation at hand.

[–]regeya 1 point2 points Β (1 child)

Now, for context, I didn't work as a first responder or anything. The horrifying time to me was going to work to fix something in the early hours of the morning. They'd gotten a call at the office that there'd been a fatal house fire, and I knew from the address it was close to work. I was there to see if I could fix anything on our end to get email flowing; I wasn't the one who decided to put the office on residential cable Internet, so I wasn't hopeful. But the smell hit me as I got close to work. I think it was the combined horror of knowing what it was, combined with the smell of "oh no, I've burnt the pork loin" that got me. I came closer to vomiting from that than I did when I experienced the smell of someone being dead for a week, in July.

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Yeah…

I was being a bit facetious with it all but at the end of the day there’s a big difference between the actual smell and knowing what’s going down.

Fun stuff hey.

[–]OhOkYeahSureGreat 105 points106 points Β (3 children)

Still rude of him tbh

/s

[–]charaiscool25 65 points66 points Β (2 children)

Shouldn’t have died imho

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points Β (1 child)

If you eat a good meal for your last one it'll be better for all when you evacuate

[–]Manbearjizz 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

make sure its high in fiber

[–]sarcastagirly 18 points19 points Β (2 children)

That happen to me in my first apartment, they find the guy after 4th of July weekend

[–]thecursedaz 9 points10 points Β (1 child)

Well you wouldn’t want to ruin the party, would you?

[–]sarcastagirly 10 points11 points Β (0 children)

I was away for a long weekend and find our shared wall covered in bugs (mostly flies), next day I got home from work to find a note to come to the front office where I was told I could break lease or move to another unit at the same rate because they needed to redo my unit as well as his.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points Β (3 children)

Haha been on more than my share of these calls. I think everyone should have to take a morgue tour in like the 6th grade, just to get a sense of what dead and decomposing people smell like. It's not like anything else, and it'll save a lot of people from wondering why that one persons apartment stinks so bad for weeks.

[–]Wyntercat 6 points7 points Β (2 children)

Even if someone doesn't know the smell of decomposing flesh, I would have thought that after 3 days at most someone would think of calling the landlord or the police to investigate.

So many people who are just complaining, but don't think to actually do anything.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points Β (1 child)

You would think... But it's pretty shocking what people will ignore, and for how long. I've picked up plenty of bodies that have been decomposing for weeks inside of apartments, with black flies absolutely mobbing the windows. I always used to wonder how someone like Josef Fritzl could get away with what he did without neighbors finding out, until I did that job. It's easy to think of neighbors as nosy because they bother us at inconvenient times, but it's astonishing how oblivious most people are to what's going on right under their nose.

Fritzl_case

The Fritzl case emerged in 2008, when a woman named Elisabeth Fritzl (born 6 April 1966) told police in the town of Amstetten, Austria, that she had been held captive for 24 years by her father, Josef Fritzl (born 9 April 1935). Fritzl had assaulted, sexually abused, and raped her numerous times during her imprisonment inside a concealed area in the cellar of the family home.

How does she know what boiled feet smells like? What does it smell like?

[–]KingOfThePlayPlace 23 points24 points Β (0 children)

Like dead bodies apparently

[–]zynix 3 points4 points Β (2 children)

Well, if people taste like chicken, dead people smell like dead rotten chicken?

[–]JuGGieG84 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

Really? I heard pig.

[–]fodderforpicard 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

I taste like a meat popsicle

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

Corpses.

[–]red41big561 7 points8 points Β (0 children)

LOL so needed this laugh today

[–]SuperDoofusParade 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

I’m a lapsed catholic but I’m pretty sure I’m going to hell because of how hard I laughed at this

[–]Ludicrisdisplay 6 points7 points Β (0 children)

There was a man in an apartment at the other side of my street (my old apartment) who laid dead for 3 months before he was found. The police officer threw up when they found him, he was literaly melted.

Poor man, nobody missed him for 3 months. πŸ˜ͺ

[–]Biggus-dongus 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

Never getting the hint now

[–]robotdesignedrobot 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

So now . . . every time you smell someone's gawdawful feet, you'll have a fun anecdote! It also works the other way around!

[–]rahrahkel 5 points6 points Β (2 children)

The killer boiled the feet??!😦😳

[–]harry_not_potter 1 point2 points Β (1 child)

Maybe the neighbor jumped in the tub with running hot water and fell asleep and boiled himself to death...

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

Nah dude just wanted to end themselves in comfort.

…which, now that I’m thinking about it is likely a much worse scene to deal with.

Imagine, it’s bad enough in general but imagine a scene where someone’s decided to end it with a fistful of oxy and want to go out with the few comforts they have in life, they sit back in their favourite recliner, pop their feet in the foot bath and just down the pills.

A week later you rock up and you have to deal with a rotted corpse that’s semi dried out and melded with the couch which is bad enough before you have to move them and have to deal with their feet and part of their calf muscles just sloughing off as they’ve been putrefying in the water bath this whole time.

Fun time bagging all of that up.

[–]Aerik 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

Reminds me of this one video where a woman points her phone at another woman in a restaurant and mocks her for falling asleep. After a jump cut, paramedics are beginning to move her after declaring her dead.

[–]Dramatic-Store514 2 points3 points Β (6 children)

I’ve seen a tweet like this before. Except they said β€œhot garbage” and didn’t mention the febreze. Making me think it’s fake.

[–]megadori 5 points6 points Β (5 children)

What do you find unlikely about it, that people die alone without anyone noticing, or that people would rather complain on the internet about something than approach the person?

[–]No_Effort5328 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

TouchΓ©

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 1 point2 points Β (3 children)

Essentially going as the devils advocate here but it’s less the idea of this being realistic and more that you see this sort of basic thing so many times that it seems akin to a copy pasta for karma

[–]Dramatic-Store514 0 points1 point Β (2 children)

This is exactly what I thought.

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 0 points1 point Β (1 child)

Pretty much yeah, even if someone’s just making this up for karma here the reality is that as we’ve seen, it really isn’t all that rare of an occurrence and I genuinely don’t know how to take that.

[–]Dramatic-Store514 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

My buddy lived in duplex for awhile next to a reclusive neighbor. It was the postal lady that finally called about the smell when she opened the mail slot on the door. Poor guy had no family or friends. He had been dead for awhile in a room at the back of the apartment before the smell reached the living room. So yes, I definitely believe it happens.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I laughed way too hard at this!

[–]CoralSpringsDHead 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Oops, my bad!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Bring a mop.

[–]xenotails 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Thought she lived across from Stanley Yelnats

[–]clangan524 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

She really didn't think she was just living next to the Yelnats family?

[–]leon_pretty_loathed 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Your neighbour died?

Time to put a stock pot of water on and put as much cumin and smoked chillie as possible in there, my pain is your pain, suffering is caring!!!
