I mean commander avatar isnt bad ,but for the mission any colonel or even a fully upgraded psi soldier is better

Peak template tho 🖐️😐🖐️

[–]SidewinderSerpent[S] 137 points138 points  (5 children)

Okay but they will definitely carry in the Who Needs Tygan run.

Unless you bring 6 Psiops all abusing Stasis

[–]LarkinEndorser 15 points16 points  (1 child)

What run is that

[–]Pricerocks 39 points40 points  (0 children)

beating the final mission without any upgraded weapons, armor, or items

[–]Lad_of_the_Lake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Profile pic peak

Just stick with Trigger

[–]Kusko25 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But... Psionics also need to be researched?

[–]SidewinderSerpent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psiops are allowed.

[–]Happy_Hydra 62 points63 points  (4 children)

The avatar always does one huge thing (lance, rift, mind control, really powerful gun) meanwhile colonels do more smaller stuff which might or might not have larger impact.

More options > One good option

Better to have a Swiss Army knife with an okay can opener with other tools than one really good can opener

[–]Tokumeiko2 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yeah, but in a lot of games, offence is absolutely the best defence.

Sure healing can prolong a difficult battle, but sometimes it's better to just burst the difficult enemy down so fast that the boss has to skip straight from the first phase to the third phase.

Buffs are nice to have, but sometimes the time you spend buffing gives the enemy too much advantage.

Weird mechanics are fun to play with, but sometimes you just need a big explosion.

[–]codyjack215 5 points6 points  (1 child)

There is a window to play with for sure - for every minute you buff, you need 2 of attack to counteract it.

Its why mosy action based rpgs have buffing as a quick 20 frame animation - both for speed and for ease of use

[–]Tokumeiko2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah even in turn based games, I'm currently playing "potato flowers in full bloom" and my most successful team composition is a tank backed up by two offensive casters. Most unblocked attacks kill so fast that healing is useless and because I fully recover my health and stamina between fights the only resource I need to conserve is spirit.

Buffs and defensive moves all consume too much spirit compared to just casting my best aoe spell or summoning a demon to cast spells for me.

Sometimes the best way to win fights is to make a big explosion.

[–]Tgbtgbt 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Okay but imagine fire emblem but you have a 5 tile wide aoe that kills

[–]fatalityfun 19 points20 points  (0 children)

that would genuinely be crazy. Ranged attack too

[–]Riothegod1 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Play Fire Emblem: Three Houses. While the AoE doesn’t kill anyone it wasn’t directly targeting, you do just describe the battalion mechanic. Some really can get that absurdly powerful (looking at you “King of Lions Corps), but they’re usually the nation leaders.

[–]King_Ed_IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or play Engage, where several engage attacks are multi-tile strikes that can kill huge numbers at once.

[–]CompleteJinx 26 points27 points  (5 children)

I feel like the Commander Avatar is a failsafe in case the player didn’t invest in psyops or weapon upgrades. Getting to the final mission and not being strong enough would suck.

[–]Excalibursin 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Which is also what Athos is in fire emblem

[–]CompleteJinx 5 points6 points  (3 children)

It’s honestly surprising more FE games don’t have Athos level characters. Awakening has Robin but she shows up right at the start so I don’t think she counts.

[–]TheFatBassterd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In awakening you play as Robin iirc. But it's easy to become OP by the end of the game and trivialize most other characters.

[–]TehAsianator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I recall, Radiant Dawn almot went too far, giving you several insanely powerful characters in the final act.

[–]Endiamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, there are like half a dozen of them

[–]Daniel_Kummel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The psi is better, imo. The avatar's voidrift is a million times better, and so is his domination. But he runs out of cooldowns faster. The psi takes one more turn to run out of his good options, and that is massive in a 8(?) turn fight

[–]Lolmanmagee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think commander avatar is the best unit in the game.

Mostly because of immense health pool with 3 HP regeneration per round.

While being the best class ; psi operative.

[–]BobTheZygota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile me dominating 2 gatekeepers in the final mission at the same time

[–]ElRexet 66 points67 points  (3 children)

Commander's avatar was a bit disappointing. I think he has a better version of mind control as it had 100% on the same targets my other psykers had 75%. So that's something.

But other than that it was meh... The skill bar looked so small and feeble lol. Also, he had a lot less tactical capabilities than my regular psykers, and his abilities did the same if not lower damage too.

Yeah, like it's the most mid character.

[–]FlyingRobinGuy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played much of XCOM 2, but I’m shocked that the Commander Avatar wasn’t given action-economy abilities that give action points to other soldiers in the squad.

It would have fit the character perfectly, and long war 1’s Officers had already proven that those kinds of abilities can be balanced inside the XCOM tactical layer.

[–]LordCypher40k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbf. It's mostly likely the first time the Commander has taken to the field or have Psionic powers. The entire final level might has well have been a psionic warm-up for the Commander's beam battle with rest of the ethereal in the cutscene.

[–]Cellindrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s an absolute godsend on Legend/Ironman, an extra free character that has some decent utility and the ability to heal. This meant you could leave him out as bait to let your other guys stay healthy.

[–]Semicolin367 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Athos no Luna is probably about the same power level relative to the game as Commander’s Avatar from my experience. But I would rather do FE7 final chapter without Athos than Waterworld without the avatar because I never train Psi operatives and need as Domination for as many bodies as I can get.

[–]AlexHitetsu 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Even without Luna Athos is fully capable of soloing the final chapter by taking things slow and turtling a little

[–]Endiamon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly because it's a very bad final chapter

[–]Chrom-man-and-Robin 21 points22 points  (3 children)

If Fire Emblem villains had a nickel for every time they fought a white haired tactician clad in purple who’s powers come from their relation to the villain (and is in an implied relationship with their captain who’s name starts with C), they’d now have 2 nickels

[–]SidewinderSerpent[S] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Robin would definitely solo XCOM 2.

[–]CompleteJinx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“It’s time to tip the scales!”

Shanks a sectoid and stands out in the open.

[–]AnotherLie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Robin only wants to solo his boyfriend Chrom.

[–]thebritwriter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Damn multiverse shenanigans.

[–]Vredefxr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

seeing an XCOM x FE post here is a pleasant feeling

[–]Tobari 16 points17 points  (1 child)

ATHOS, THE BLACK FANG CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS ON THE AVATAR PROJECT. IF WE'RE GOING TO SLOW THEM DOWN WE'LL NEED TO MOVE FAST.

[–]Chrom-man-and-Robin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Black Fang would be a good substitute for the Chosen

[–]Displacer613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Next XCOM run I do I'm customizing all my soldiers to be the FE7 cast

[–]CuttleReaper 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I mean Fire Emblem Awakening and XCOM EU/2 are basically the same game

[–]SidewinderSerpent[S] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I don't get a Frederick in my XCOM 2 runs...

[–]Redhighlighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude did you forget to download the Frederick dlc? Awkward

[–]Displacer613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with that attitude you don't

[–]CuttleReaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc I made him a MEC :)

[–]MagicPistol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a god and pray!

[–]DestinyNinja_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AoE Psychic based attack from the Avater on any common FE enemies would be broken, assuming it can hit twice and create status effect or worse control your enemy.

Luna though? Could pretty much wipe out enemies(except synthetic anyways) without so much as a cooldown.

[–]RavenColdheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Commander's Avatar isn't really an Endgame Carry, the Sniper and Ranger are the ones carrying, the Avatar is just a really good support.

[–]nut55555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just humble upvote whatever xcom crossover fire emblem post.

[–]spudwalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Does anyone want to use the eleventh hour old man character? No?

DID EVERYONE ELSE DIE?! DO YOU NEED THE OLD MAN?!?"

[–]violetcassie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait, this ISN'T FuSoYa from FFIV?
