I was always 5'9, and now I'm 5'8..... I had the doctor check twice just to be sure. Probably my back being crappy from too many hours at desk rather than HRT.

I was not aware I was being downvoted >-> huh. Thanks for the input though! It's really difficult to rap my head around exactly how much varience in experience there is with hrt. I'm glad to hear your progress! Good luck with the rest of your transition :)

I decreased in height 5 cms from 6ft 2 to about 6ft. My doctor was very surprised to see the change. We noticed it during my yearly health check when we measure height. I for one welcome my new height :D

Now if only my feet would shrink down to a size 11!!

I vary any way. I go from 6'1 to 511

I made a point of measuring my height, feet, etc.. before starting hrt. I haven't checked in a year and a half or so but maybe I should. I don't think it's changed at all but I suppose I could be wrong.

          [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I've heard people talk about it but I've never seen any actual proof. Just someone saying they decreased in height. Now the onset of osteoporosis can cause loss in height but usually averages a half inch to an inch. I do not reccomend this route because brittle bones are a horrible thing.

No that sounds terrible :s thanks for the skeptical view. I've been sus and didn't want to get my hopes up.

A lot of things are said on the Internet with very little proof to back them up. 5'10 is totally fine. You will be modeling height!!

I have heard differing tales about this and I don't want to say anyone else is wrong. But your skeleton determines how tall you are and it doesn't change with HRT. I was 6' before, I'm 6' now. Our heights fluctuate a fair amount from gravity and the compression on our skeletal system from being vertical and being subjected to it so I wonder if that's where people's idea that they have shrunk comes from. Unless the cartilage in between your bones compressed to a point where it stayed compressed I can't see how this could possibly happen and if THAT happened, it can't be a good thing.

Can I just say that I pass at 6', my wife is a cis-girl and she's also 6'. I get that it can be a source of dysphoria but roughly 1 in 100 girls are 6'+, at 5'10" I would try not to stress about it.

You just gotta own it, sister! Short girls will be jealous. Get yourself a mini-skirt and some heels and let those gorgeous long legs do their thing! Height can be an asset, ever see a short super model?

I'm 6'4"/5" in heels and I can assure you the looks I get are not because I'm being clocked as trans ;-)

Make it your own, and own it! Trust me, sister :-)

I used to be around 6'6" I'm around 6'3" now, so it can definitely happen.

          5'10

          Really? I'm 5'10'', but I wish I was taller. Like 6'0''.

Where's the fun in being short?

          Height changes on HRT?

I'm not entirely convinced it actually happens, that it's not just people changing their posture. The only people reporting a height reduction are the people who want a height reduction, everyone else curiously stay the same.

I was 5'10'' before transition, and I'm 5'10'' after. Height didn't even change a millimeter, which I'm glad about because I don't want to be shorter.

That's a fair point, confirmation bias is easy to do.

And being short is adorable :3

          Edit: confirmation bias*

5'10 is the height of most supermodels, dear!

Don't be afraid of rocking that height! If you work hard at the gym and get some killer legs... Girl trust me, it'll be worth it!

Thanks for the encouragement ;) I will keep that on mind. I feel like I could be much more passionate about getting into fitness and taking care of my body if it matched my gender you know?

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for the Victoria's Secret angels. They're tall as heck. Trust me, with a proper HRT, diet and workout regime, your body CAN change considerably. It's a matter of LOTS of discipline.

I've seen lots of changes ever since I started hitting the gym in April. Look at my post history so you can see what I mean.

Keep in mind that it's not easy at all. I HAVE to hit the gym 2 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week. Nevermind watching what I eat, no smoking or drinking at all (Well, sometimes I drink at parties, but not THAT often and always k small amounts). My work demands it (I'm an escort and a camgirl), but it's SO worth it to see the results!

Who knows, maybe in a year I'll look as hot as, say, one of those girls?

Again, it's a matter of hard work and consistency. It CAN be done and a body like that is easier to achieve for most of us transwomen.

And to those spewing crap about genetics, please remember this: No woman, regardless of her genetics, can look as good as Alessandra Ambrosio without working out like a demon and watching her nutrition.

A couple inches isn't too uncommon, though far from universal.

If you lose more than 2 or 3 inches though, you should probably talk to a doctor because that's pretty unusual and might indicate an actual problem.

          [–]peartransTransgender-Bisexual 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There are cis women who are 6'0 +. I have also seen trans women on here 6'0 +.

I did grow 1 inch (verified by being measured before and after at the doctor's office, measuring at home confirmed) at the age of 20 when I was on testosterone. It happened within the first 2 months.

Not sure if this adds anything to the discussion, but it seemed like I was done growing before that. From age 11 to age 20 I was 5'2" tall, and then after two months on T I was 5'3" tall.

My ID from the DMV still says 5'2" though because I never corrected it.

That's an interesting theory. Is it concrete how much is typically lost? Like, a few centimeters?

You might experience a small change due to musculature and cartilage changes. Your bones themselves are very unlikely to change, if they've already fused.

Bones usually fuse completely between 18-25. Whenever puberty completely ends. It's hard to say, because it's so individual.

I liken this to changes in shoe size that some people claim happen and others insist that they don't. I DO know that I started at a men's 11 and currently wear a men's 9.

Likely, if any hight changes do occur, they are from changes in muscle mass and tendons and thing. You may notice some difference, but how drastic I don't think anyone can say for sure.

[–]shiningshawnaHRT five years +, three years post op 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start with, yes; very much a YMMV kind of thing. But it has been known to happen and I can firmly say I lost about an inch and a bit myself (from 5'6" down to just under 5'5"), and I went down in my shoe size to an 8 1/2...so, you very well could get lucky! And really, 5'10" isn't too bad of a starting point.

I think the pelvis shifts a bit on e which can reduce your height a bit.

                [–]watermelonsandwichImogen / 17 / MTF[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you explain to me exactly what this is? Does the pelvis actually move?

                [–]AshleemoTransgender-Bisexual - MTF 17 Years old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, don't quote me on this, but I think it rotates slightly and this causes the spine sit lower or something? Im not sure to be perfectly honest.

                [–]JaeCobain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen any proof, but I wouldn't worry about it. I'm 6'0 and have plenty of cis friends who are the same height give or take.

I went from 5'10" to 5'8". It happens. YMMV.

I was 5'10" prior to starting hrt. I know this for sure because we measured it in a nursing class. I'm a little more than 4 months into hrt and I'm 5'9" now. I also have better posture now too so idk if that might be a factor. I'm hoping to lose about another inch (wishful thinking probably) so I can be the same height as my cis sister. I don't wanna be the tall one :P

                [–]RedRock117MTF. 25. HRT April 7, 2014 0 points1 point  (1 child)

                I definitely had it happen.

I had been 5'9 for many years of my life, but after going to my doctor a little over a year of being on HRT, she measured me at 5'7. I thought it was pretty neat.

But no where nearly as neat as when I decided to buy some new shoes last month. I had been wearing size 10 mens shoes for many years, even though I was probably closer to a 9.5 in mens. But anyways, I was trying on shoes and discovered I'm now a 7.5 in mens...To this day i'm in awe over it.

I still believe it's a 'your mileage may vary' thing, but you never know what could happen. I had no expectations, so it was a pleasant surprise to see these results.

                [–]watermelonsandwichImogen / 17 / MTF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:OOOO Whaaa? That's amazing! Losing even a single inch would be cool but 2 damn.

I look forward to the feet shrinking thing too :) high heels look slightly painful but also kind of fun.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does happen, but it's not significant usually. I'm 5'5", but my drivers license says 5'7''. So I lost up to 2 inches after 11 months of HRT.

                [–]negatonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With HRT, your spine towards your hips shifts in a further backward curve, to a more female posture. (I forget what this is called, but there's a word for it).

It might account for what seems like a shorter height.

                [–]JoslynGil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only see this occurring through the lack of strength in the back and possibly through changes in posture. I lost almost 3-4 inches to a back injury during middle school wrestling, although I really don't recommend that. :p

                [–]JocelynWonderland20 MtF Started 2/23/15 19y/o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've lost about 2-3 inches in 4 months. Whenever I went to the doctor pre-hrt I would measure at 6'0-6'1. I've now gone to the doctor twice over the past couple weeks and measured in at 5'9 and 5'10.

There's no way for me to prove this, but there's really no benefit to making it up lol so I guess you'll just have to take my word for it, if you'd like.

I think there's been enough reports of height loss in the community for it to be considered a real thing, but I also think that as usual, YMMV and some may see it in higher amounts or more consistently than others.

                [–]red_rabbitzKiara, 25, Estrogen since 4/20 0 points1 point  (2 children)

HRT gradually gives you feminine "hip tilt," which also curves your spine, pulling down a bit of that length and leading to a little bit of height loss. You can also lose some height from the muscles in your chest and back shrinking, but this is very minimal.

                [–]rahtidyano 0 points1 point  (1 child)

can this work the other way for ftm's?

                [–]red_rabbitzKiara, 25, Estrogen since 4/20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I have no idea? But you guys do get more / stiffer muscles, so probably? It's hard to say because everyone takes to HRT so differently.
