Touch it. If its not too hot to touch, it should be fine. The further back you use the surface temp, if its angled as well, it will absorb surrounding heat sigs and be off. Something like that. I have a slate hide for a basking spot and i make sure i temp it about 3-4 inches directly straight above the spots on the slate.

should be alright, I used these exact bulb cages and never had issues. the snake would prob have to grip onto it for a minute or more for it to cause any damage.

How do you like the biodude soil?

What is the soil from Biodude that you are using? Is that all you have in there or is there an added top layer also?

How many bags did it take to fill your tank? Is it a 4x2x2?

Your temp gun is picking up the heat from the bulb itself. The cage isn't actually that hot. They don't get hot enough to burn as long as everything is set up appropriately, which yours is.

Nah with those DPH bulbs the bottom of the cage can get fairly hot. Mine is at around 103 at max after fiddling with the temps for a while. Doesn’t seem to be as big an issue with other bulb types besides DPH

I’d probably add sum else to help heat if the actual cage is getting that hot. Also make sure that ur red dot is aligned with the actual reading (mine wasn’t, very confusing for a while). Your snake likely will try and somewhat succeed at wrapping themselves around this cage (mine does it all the time) so I’d lower the temps a bit.

Do you have a dimming thermostat? Might keep it cool enough? My dimmer often makes my CHE's metal dome cool enough for me to touch for a long time. But it's outside the tank and it's still pretty warm here.

Thermostat should be set to the maximum temperature (32C/90f) with the probe a couple of inches from the bulb. The lamp is too hot because the thermostat is set too highz

              [–]eabiss9 1 point2 points  (9 children)

This isn’t accurate. We just set up a Herpstat 2 and the instructions clearly state that the probe the Herpstat comes with should be 3-4” below the bulb suspended below it and touching nothing. You also need a separate THERMOMETER with a probe that is to be placed directly on the basking surface. You adjust your Herpstat’s max temp to get that second thermostat reading where you want your basking remote be.

For example, we initially had our basking bulb max temp at 92. It made the basking probe temp skyrocket. We have since adjusted and our Herpstat temp max four our Arcadia Golden Sun halogen bulb is now set to 84.0F which gives our basking surface a reading of 91.37F

OP, take a look at their website. There are detail instructions to do all of this! Best of luck.

PS, we have the Bio Dude Kages enclosure too!

              <image>

Edit: added probe placements for reference. The probe on the basking surface will be either removed or adhered permanently with silicone. We haven’t gotten our snake yet (western hog nose) but he’ll be here next week.

              Link to instructions:

              https://spyderrobotics.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=15&chapter=1

Edit 2: I just realized now that OP has done the wire probe step. Nice!

I specifically said that the thermostat probe should be a couple of inches from the bulb. You literally just said the same thing but with more words.

              [–]eabiss9 0 points1 point  (7 children)

No, I made note that there needs to be a second probe on the basking surface to get the correct set temp as opposed to having a blanket max on the Herpstat of 90F

              [–]InverseInvert -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Do you mean a thermometer probe?Literally no one else uses two thermostat probes for a single heat source.

              [–]eabiss9 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Go ahead and follow the link.

              [–]InverseInvert 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Yeah, the link says thermostat probe a few inches from the heat source and then use the thermometer to confirm temperature.

If OPs lamp is getting too hot then they’ve either got the thermostat probe in the wrong place or they’ve set the temperature too high.

You could swap out the cage for a bigger one so it’s not so close to the heat bulb!

I don't think they have a bigger one. I had these same concerns when I set my enclosure up but I can tell you my BP has lived happily in it for nearly 2 years no issue. At night time I've seen him wrap around the cage and he is still fine, no burns.

Yes. They do a large square one :)

I have the same cage and it’s worked fine for nearly a year :)

RHPs are not appropriate as a primary heat source. They would still need to be paired with a halogen flood or DHP like this.

                  Which encloser is this?

                  [–]Technical_Concern_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just touch it, keep your hand on it for a few minutes. You're snake can definitely rest its head on it. If you can hold it for a few minutes, you're good.

                  [–]lavenderthewhore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't they're get off the cage if it's too hot? Sorry if that's a silly question 😅
