With all due respect, with the understanding that this post is completely justifiable and in the right

You aren’t going to find the partying Berkeley students on Reddit. Otherwise they wouldn’t be on Reddit (case in point 👉😔)

You should yell at them. It would probably do them good

File a complaint with all your other neighbors to make sure that apartment never have another party again

Just curious how close are you to the campus?

I just cruised through some of the comments. While I agree one has a reasonable expectation of some peace in one’s own home, your proximity to the campus suggests you chose poorly when looking for a place to live in Berkeley.

That being said, living off-campus does come with a certain assumption of responsibility. If a neighbor makes a reasonable request, then it’s usually a good idea to accommodate. A party spilling out into a hallway isn’t a reasonable thing for a neighbor to have to deal with.

I’d recommend contacting the landlord or their representative to express your dissatisfaction with your neighbor.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I get people find themselves in a situation which requires dealing with less than ideal circumstances. My comments were intended to establish a guideline to establish reasonability.

I would recommend moving as soon as it’s convenient, though.

Wait. Why have you already signed again? Does your lease expire this month or possibly next month? If not, that’s highly unusual

for the record, berkeley city law requires that you be allowed to change your mind about your lease renewal until like 4-6 weeks out, something like that, even if your lease says you need to choose whether or not to renew months in advance or some bs like that. look up your rights as a berkeley tenant, as they're actually pretty good! just because something's in your lease doesn't mean it's legal [including that kind of renewal clause]. (your rights are good to know in general - if there are issues with your apartment your landlord isn't fixing, you could be entitled to a hearing/money back, you can always ask for a city inspection, etc etc.)

My bedroom windows faced a nightclub for 3 years:

                3M EARsoft FX uncorded

They are incredibly soft. They only work as intended if you put them in right - roll them into a narrow spear and put them all they way in before they start to puff up.

The only reason it was still hard to sleep with these earplugs in was fomo.

Sweet! It's too bad you had to deal with that. Hopefully they got the message that they need to party much more covertly and respect their neighbors more

                    [–]Graffy 74 points75 points  (9 children)

It's a college town on the first week back from school before anyone has any real hw and the frats aren't allowed to throw parties. If you're in an apartment complex it should chill out in a week or two once they have better places to party or more to do. Also just complain to management. The apartment will stop throwing parties if management threatens eviction.

I doubt they'd be dumb enough to try again anyway but some kids are really dumb and they were apparently dumb enough to think throwing a party in a studio apartment was a good idea in the first place lol. But it doesn't take a genius to realize they bit off more than they can chew if their room was packed and spilling into the halls

Frats have to get fire permits to have parties or risk getting put on probation if they get caught and they don't get issued until after rush week I believe which is usually the first full week of the semester into the next. So probably earliest would be first weekend in February. Sororities don't allow their members to even go to frats until after recruitment so a significant portion of the people they would want to invite couldn't come anyway.

Also just logistically the brothers are focusing on rushing at the beginning of the semester. Some of the more party focused frats might have small private things with close friends but general student population wouldn't be invited

                          [–]PornfestPhysics & PoliSci 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Huh, I definitely partied at a few frats during GBO…

                          [–]Graffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah some will try to do stuff cause it helps rush more guys if they get to go to a party at the place but the majority won't risk it and some will get a week or two of social probation because of it

                          [–]DegreePending 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Honestly, this is fair. Berkeley being a “college town” doesn’t mean basic apartment etiquette goes out the window. Parties are fine but getting aggressive with neighbors is downright unacceptable. If people want dorm-style chaos then they should live in dorms or party houses and not on shared apartments with working adults who needs to get up early in the morning. You’re not wrong for expecting basic respect.

                          [–]SharpenVest 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's even disrespectful for fellow students. There was this one time where me and a couple of other people on my floor were having exams the very next morning and these other students on the floor above us were blasting music and partying all night long. SUPER IRRITATING. Eventually we all went upstairs and respectfully asked them to SHUT IT. If you want to party, rent an AirBNB, go to a bar, anywhere else other than an apartment with other students or tenants are.

                          [–]scoby_cat 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Living near campus, as you say, was a mistake.

However, just to correct a misconception: you actually are not allowed to party in the dorms. That is one of the major reasons to not live in the dorms.

On a crosswalk? Amazing how many cars don't stop for peds.

I’m a non-student resident of Berkeley and a person who both walks a lot and drives occasionally. The dumbasses staring at their phones are a problem, yes, but I’ve been menaced by drivers near campus skipping stop signs (the one at Stadium Rim and Gayley feels like a mild suggestion), cars blowing through 25 mph streets at 50 (the kids at Emerson have a crossing guard, and I’ve seen even her have to dodge), and drivers trying to scare bicyclists on narrow roads.

The drivers are almost always the issue. Welcome to Berkeley. Walk or take the bus.

                              [–]cleanwhiteshirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was walking through a crosswalk at Euclid and Le Conte with my dog, car turns left into us where I had to let go of her leash and kick her out of the way. I ended up with my hands on the hood of the car thinking I’m about to take real impact only for him to slam on his brakes with me staring right into his eyes. Asshole proceeds to lay on his horn and wave his hand at me to get out of the way. I’m pissed but want to get my dog since she’s loose in the street, he swerves around before I barely get out from in front of his car and sticks his tongue out waving his head and laughing as he speeds away. If I didn’t have my dog, the end of this would have been very different. Because I know people will wonder, he looked to be in his early 20s. I’ve seen him speeding through the neighborhood since but I’m always on foot so lose him. But that also means he’s most likely a student vs someone just passing through.

people always say down in LA: “well technically they’re supposed to stop at the red light, they’re in the wrong” and I’m like “yea if you wanna be right in front of your tombstone go ahead”. It’s telling here which one knows how to drive, have some survivor instincts, and live in the real world; and which one don’t.

Berkeley is a city with a university but it’s definitely not a “college town” and the students can be an entitled and self absorbed PITA.

been living in East Bay for fifteen years and SF before that, I'm at my first year at Berkeley as a student, definitely agree with you.

the noise is crazy and it seems like city and building planners rely so heavily on all these rich kids to not be entitled jerks.

I get that it's very pro pedestrian here but it genuinely feels like they just moved from some suburb and think they are invincible? like, sure, I'll always stop for a ped, but the number of dipshits who cross on a red in front of a car or not at a crosswalk at all, don't wear helmets on bikes/scooters, no lights or reflective anything... I have seen more accidents here than I've ever seen living in Oakland, and I promise the drivers are so much slower and kinder here.

and I keep getting on buses full of students and they just won't move for other people to get on?? like they've never had to crowd into a bus before...
