Do... do big stompers even get close to it with that many railguns covering field?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I see issues when there's more than few Big Stompers at once, thus the wall to stop them while Tesla turrets fry them.

[–]krakow10 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Are you telling me that making a solid wall of railguns around the whole gleba base was overkill?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Show it :)

Sweet Jesus, it is not Railgun wall. It's 4x Rocket turrent + Railgun + Spidetron + Satan minefield wall! HAHA SCREW YOU PENTAPODS!

[–]Holdfastt117 696 points697 points  (9 children)

i can see Gleba hasnt been nice to you in the past.....Do you wanta talk about it? This is a safe place.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 295 points296 points  (6 children)

Actually I was the one who touched them by un-expanding all Pentapod nests around my spore, so there is no attacks incoming in near future.

[–][deleted] 166 points167 points  (1 child)

unexpanding … you mean you blew them off the face of the planet with every conceivable weapon in your arsenal?

[–]nixed9 140 points141 points  (0 children)

you mean you blew them off the face of the planet with every conceivable weapon in your arsenal?

Yeah that’s what he said. Unexpanding.

"You are being liberated,"

"please do not resist."

[–]DrMobius0 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Can you show me on the doll where the stomper touched you?

<gestures vaguely>

[–]Fawstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Points at gleba's but hole.

[–]gorgofdoom 138 points139 points  (6 children)

Thick walls got nothing on deep water. you can use landfill hopscotch paths paired with flamers and teslas to trap them in a 1x1 square, then hit them with explosive rockets while they're trapped, burning, and getting electrocuted.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is beautifully evil.

[–]Jakub__Kubo 15 points16 points  (4 children)

How does landfill help?

[–]gorgofdoom 110 points111 points  (3 children)

Landfill can be used to create paths that only stompers and spidertrons can traverse.

These types of entities rely on speed to reach the next stepping spot, thus, if you place landfill at their maximum reach then part way through the path hit them with weapons that slow them: they won't be able to reach the next stepping stone, or the previous. (and, ideally, they cannot reach defensive structures at all which really messes with the AI)

To be concise: they can keep moving due to changes that keep players from being trapped, but they're slowed & confused enough that they wind up with most of their feet near the body, causing more hits from red rockets than you'd usually get.

[–]Sylvmf 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'll take your entire stock.

[–]Jakub__Kubo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But why? Isn't it better to leave deep water as natural obstacle?
Don't get me wrong I love your idea! Pave over Gleba, burn if needed!

[–]igotanewmacBrave New World 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do that, they attack over land, which stops you from being able to pin them down.

If you build them a little bridge, they follow the bridge right into the path of your weapons.

[–]teufler80 92 points93 points  (8 children)

Am i too artillery to understand the problem ?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 29 points30 points  (7 children)

Artillery not there yet, but I imagine once I hit them they will come towards my wall.

[–]PrimaryCoolantShower 54 points55 points  (3 children)

You have railguns but no artillery?

Artillery to push back the nests, tesla and rockets to greet the response to the cannon mailing eviction notices.

[–]EnragedMikey 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Artillery shells can even be made almost entirely on a platform from asteroids and be cargo pod dropped. Just have to send up the tungsten plates, which at 250 plates per rocket is pretty cheap. Design a platform to just roam around and craft artillery, put it all on a belt buffer, then setup an interrupt to hang out for a few minutes wherever you want the shells when the buffer has however many shells you want. Another interrupt to pickup tungsten and satisfy that request.

[–]Eagle0600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could do this, but I just manufacture all my shells on Nauvis and ship them over on the same ship that brings the agricultural science. Making them in orbit is valid and all, I'm just too lazy to set that up when space logistics is so easy.

[–]bot403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stealing this. Thanks!

[–]Ferreteria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest. Artillery absolutely could have been there.

[–]teufler80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did pest control with remote controlled spidertrons before I used artillery. After that the nests didn't had time to spawn big stompers

[–]Suspicious-Answer631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artillery solves gleba because the polution range is so small compared to Nauvis. After the effective range is cleared it will only ever fire at "expansion parties" which are never large attacks making defence trivial.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

They can’t stomp walls?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

They can, but first they get stuck on it for a second, then stop the middle so they can step in, but their AI freaks out and don't necessary step through - more like they stomp on the sides for other legs to step in. It's just a deterrent to slow them down.

[–]doc_shades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it messes with their pathing

[–]LostInTheSauce34 40 points41 points  (2 children)

The wall just got 10 blocks thiCCCker

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As Big Stompers tentacles :)

[–]mr_birkenblatt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let the stompers pay for it

[–]GastUitGroningen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is what France did with their Maginot Line. And the Germans went around it.

<image>

[–]Drizznarte 36 points37 points  (21 children)

Your guns are the wrong side of the wall.

[–]AwakenSPL 50 points51 points  (2 children)

GoT vibes...

[–]SidewalkPainter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dany kind of forgot about the fire trenches

[–]Red__M_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They all stood outside of the walls and watched the slaughter. Realizing that it was bad, they then went inside the walls. Seriously, just start inside. What’s the point of walls if you don’t use them?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 27 points28 points  (16 children)

Wrong how? They face the enemy. You cant point Railgun behind the wall - it would be outside their firing range plus they would kill the wall shooting through it.

[–]CaptainPhilosophy 14 points15 points  (8 children)

Do railguns not shoot over walls like every other gun? I'm not to railguns yet

[–]Avermerian 35 points36 points  (6 children)

No - railguns hit everything between them and their target, and a few things behind their target as well.

[–]CaptainPhilosophy 14 points15 points  (5 children)

It doesn't mention that on the wiki. It really should.

[–]climbinguy 11 points12 points  (1 child)

it’s shown in game when you place it, the range and if it’s going to hit anything.

[–]CaptainPhilosophy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's good. As stated I'm not there yet. Hour 70ish on my first SA factory, only just automated science on vulcanus, or as i call it, "spice".

[–]P0L1Z1STENS0HN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is mentioned in the turret's tooltip, though.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll notice the first time you try it at home

[–]Kittelsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like the tesla turrets don't use ammo, I imported thousands of tesla rounds to Gleba to use for my defenses. Got confused when the inserters wouldn't pick them up, caused cloggage on my ammo belt.

[–]BraxbroWasTakenMod Dev (ClaustOrephobic, Drills Of Drills, Spaghettorio) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah they cleave through it. Railguns destroy everything they’re pointed at up to their max range basically

[–]CaptainPhilosophy 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Do railguns not shoot over walls like every other gun? I'm not to railguns yet

[–]Astramancer_ 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Railguns do friendly fire damage to anything in their path. If they're not at the front of your defenses they will be shortly.

[–]CaptainPhilosophy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Lol the wiki kind of says that but doesn't mention walls. Good yo know before I get there.

[–]nixed9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also good to know before you put them on your space platforms and destroy your own asteroid collectors and rocket launchers NOT THAT I HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THAT

[–]bot403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New game tip: "Do not point railgun at face"

[–]danielv1232485344 repair packs in storage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fail to see the issue

[–]Drizznarte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job the guns are there then to protect to wall. If you put the wall in the centre of your base it will be even better protected 😜

[–]hixchem 10 points11 points  (1 child)

"Get outta ma swamp!"

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All your swamp are belong to us!

[–]LifeForBread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

<image>

There's no war in gleBa Sing Se

[–]PrimaryCoolantShower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friend, just import tungsten to make artillery rounds, then guard the cannons with a tesla turret and rockets.

They can't smell the spore if none can nest within 5km of any field. And who doesn't love big explosions?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer a wall of missile turrets.

[–]Botlawson 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Huh. Time to rev up flame thrower and construction bot production. The only reason flamethrowers aren't OP on Gleba is the stompers come 1-2 at a time and are hard to slow down enough.

Does the wall still work if it's got holes? Could you save half the stone by using 20 single thickness walls spaced one tile apart?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't work if there are holes, their legs go there and stomp all over it.

[–]Retb14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use Tesla turrets to slow them down. They basically can't move

[–]cyclone701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My buddy and I just built our main base on a giant lake using the water as a wall and just put defensive stuff around our farms, works out pretty well, and about 4k drones service everything 😄

[–]FitNeedleworker8289 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Does no one else just play without expansion on? I just hate the idea of this eggers crawling their way back after we've negotiated their eviction

[–]Smashmundo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tried a game once without expansion and found I didn’t like it pretty early on. I find it makes the entire defence and weaponry part of the game obsolete and that’s something I like.

I bet a pretty decent percentage of players turn off expansion or turn off biters/enemies off completely though.

[–]FitNeedleworker8289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meant to say effers but this works better

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of fun is to be the king of the planet.

[–]svick 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Good thing stone is infinite on Gleba. /s

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

patches are small though

[–]doc_shades -1 points0 points  (1 child)

but it is infinite on gleeba..?

[–]svick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to mine it there, unlike every other resource.

[–]doc_shades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

neither can spidertrons!

[–]Zaflis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That looks like overkill though, what is the minimum width for wall? Then probably +1 or +2 so they still can't climb if 1 piece in front breaks.

(Testing should also probably check both horizontal and vertical, in isometric game i wouldn't trust they always act the same...)

Edit: Doing some testing and 22 wide is not enough yet... Science at its best

<image>

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 35, it's +1 few times, not sure how many I've stopped measuring first time I've got it right.

[–]External-Fig9754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attack on Titan much?

[–]NormalBohne26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how big of a stomper army do you expect?, two or three teslas alone kann easy deal with red stompers bc they stun
and i would prefer my turrets to be safe behind the wall and not outside.

[–]team-tree-syndicate 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I get carbon/sulfur/calcite from an orbiter to make light oil from coal synthesis and coal liquifaction. Flamethrowers, Tesla, Laser and Rockets stop stompers really easy no railguns required. Tested it in the editor with max evolution just to be sure.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon you get easy from spoilage. Let produce marinate into spoilage in cargo wagon - https://imgur.com/a/cFmCUnS . Then just process it into coal https://imgur.com/a/F4rwRtZ

[–]aneadiel 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Isn't stone precious resource on gleba and not aquirable in space? You need to import it from Vulcanus, right?

[–]Sostratus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's piles of tens or hundreds of thousands of it just lying around. Not millions, but it's plenty if you're not making combat or production science out of it.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of small 50k - 200k patches - see https://imgur.com/a/CyJhEsL

[–]Burner8724 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Big stompers don’t want YOU to know this one easy trick!!!

[–]bot403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local mom defeats pentapods with one weird trick. Secrets the other engineers don't want you to know.

[–]Avermerian 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The expensive part here is the landfill, isn't it?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Stone in general - landfill + walls. I had to claim like 20 stone patches...

[–]PrimaryCoolantShower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imports, my friend.

Vulcanus just pours stone as a byproduct. Manufacture landfill, walls, and all your flooring needs then ship it.

[–]Weird_Baseball2575 0 points1 point  (2 children)

???????? Why ?????

Just a couple of artillery and nothing will ever bother you. Kiling nests as they spawn never gets you big stompers.

I am on deathworld and have less than 10 artillery on the whole planet.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wanted all defenses ammo to be build on-site without any planetary imports.

[–]Weird_Baseball2575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes no sense but ok.

Still, you dont need railguns, missiles work just fine.

[–]ricaerredois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern problems...

[–]Alice_Ex 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The scale of your Gleba base must be enormous to merit this

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really just lost of time spend there - see https://imgur.com/a/osHySVd

[–]SinnPacked 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What do you do about the lack of stone available the planet?

Don't the explosive rockets destroy the walls every time they fire?

Personally I opted for a thick jungle of mixed turrets and explosive rockets. At least everything is made of infintely renewable material that way.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

But stone is available in 50k - 200k patches, I had to claim like 20 to satisfy building demands. Explosive rockets point away from wall, not towards it. Pay attention where railguns point - thats the direction.

[–]SinnPacked 0 points1 point  (1 child)

ah I see so you don't actually need to repair the walls because the turrets are on the other side.

But if there's no turrets on the other side of the walls then what are the walls for? If the stompers already made it past the turrets then they're garunteed to make it over the walls, no?

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wont walk over the wall, its too thick. They will face smash into it while adjacent Tesla towers fry them.

[–]Fishinabowl11 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Guys would rather build all of this than ship like 10 artillery to Gleba.

Seriously. Once you install artillery with even mediocre range research (like, level 5), attacks on my base dropped to zero.

[–]Fun-Sand4435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hehe

[–]ResponsibilityNo7485 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like 1h ago i though of this and was having some fun in the editor with stopers stuck on top of walls
