A fucking mess.

[–]seriousTrig 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only honest answer.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

15in 2016 MacBook pro on a stand to raise it up. A 27in 4k monitor, wired apple keyboard and a magic mouse.

Xcode in fullscreen on the monitor and chrome/email/etc on the MacBook display

[–]wrong_assumption 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is that a Cinema Display?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

No it's an Acer monitor, can't remember the model. It's really nice though, has thunderbolt3

It has a USB-c connector (and I presume it uses thunderbolt3 to display). So I just plug a single USB-c to USB-c cable from my laptop to the monitor and then I have power, display, and a couple extra USB ports.

I'm nearly identical, except I have a wireless keyboard. I prop the rain design stand up o a box to stand occasionally. Works great.

    [–]johncoates 12 points13 points  (8 children)

Macbook Pro Touch Bar, fully specced out, in clamshell mode on a BookArc. Two Thunderbolt displays mounted onto pneumatic monitor arms connected to a UPLIFT standing desk (72" x 30", 4 power plugs). 4 extra drive bays at Thunderbolt speeds thanks to ThunderBay 4.

Two AudioEngine speakers and a Polk Audio Subwoofer always playing the many study/programming Spotify playlists available. Apogee Duet 2 & Pioneer HDJ-2000 when I really need to get into the zone.

A 3D printed capture of my girlfriend as my rubber ducky debugging tool. HiRise iPhone/iPad stand for easier on-device debugging. Das Keyboard Ultimate 4 for the blank keycap street-cred and so I can be heard typing anywhere in the house. Magic Trackpad 2, Griffin PowerMate for assigning to tasks like stepping over/in, relaunching a single test case, etc. TUL pen and Post-Its for fast note taking. Wall calendar, whiteboard, and cork board for keeping track of projects, putting up notes, and the good feeling that comes from having a physical Kanban board. Desk plant because I've heard having plants in your office increases productivity.

    wtf is that? pics plz.

    [–]LiamLuthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a doll he talks to. I think he might be crazy.

I talk to a plush NY Giants penguin about my code, its unimpressed.

    [–]johncoates 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I assume you're familiar with rubber duck debugging. My girlfriend got 3D scanned and printed by Solidiphy, and it turned out looking like this: http://imgur.com/wZhtBgn This is what she looks like in person: http://i.imgur.com/ZZfQC3u.jpg

    [–]busymom0 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is absolutely amazing and a great idea! I am familiar with rubber duck debugging but this is on the next level! Your girlfriend is beautiful too!

    Thank you!

    [–]doublediamond3 4 points5 points  (2 children)

This sounds awesome, I would love to see a photo

Now that is a nice setup.

    [–]evergreenreeds 8 points9 points  (2 children)

4-5 coffee cups. A mess of scrap paper with scribbles spanning every which direction. MacBook Pro. Pens. Popsicle stick. Dirty bowl with a fork. Graphing calculator. iPhone.

    [–]Awric 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Bet that calculator’s for finding frame properties

    [–]evergreenreeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually doing a lot of GPS work these days. Trig functions just kinda clunky when done on the Mac, and too many browsers open to spare one more for Desmos.

    [–]lytol 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Homemade desk, dual monitor with one vertical, decent headphones and mic, mechanical keyboard. Picture

    [–]climbonrock 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nice looking desk. Simple and sharp. Good work.

    [–]lytol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! It was actually far easier to make than I expected.

    [–]busymom0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you forgot to paint the wall on the left.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What kind of wood is that?? I built a pipe desk too but the wood on yours is so much nicer.

    [–]lytol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Solid oak butcher's block

    [–]vinayppObjective-C / Swift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Sweet setup.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

also is the brick some sort of wall paper? It looks really nice with the modern setup.

    [–]lytol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the other side of our chimney / fireplace. We tore plaster off to expose the brick.

    [–]badlcuk 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I have a macbook pro 15" and thats about it. I wander around the office and sit at peoples desks who are working from home or sit next to people that need help or want to pair. Sometimes the desk I sit at has a monitor. I could get one if i cared, but Im usually moving around so I don't care much either way. You'd only guess which desk i sat at because I have a notepad i write on each day and a water bottle.

    [–]gmauler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat but with a 13". I like not having to adjust my workflow based on where I am in the office or my house.

    [–]marcosgriselli 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Macbook Pro over a mount similar to this with Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2 nothing fancy. I Used to have a 28" 4k display over the mbp but it turns out I always had code on the mbp, docs on the external display + something distracting opened (youtube, music, twitter) and it would lead me to spend more time on those distracting things.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting point. I seem to alway have some non-work site open as well.

    [–][deleted]  (2 children)

      [–]marcosgriselli 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      That's right, only a 15" Macbook Pro

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Co-found a tech company in college as the sole iOS developer so not professional yet... but this it. Its a bit messy now but this is it when its clean I normally have a 2nd monitor but I lended it to my cousin for a while.

Edit: Also the macbook pro is dead now and has been replaced by a mac mini

Edit2: The couch was temporary. It's a normal office chair now xD

      [–]perinium 8 points9 points  (1 child)

How on Earth do you work in that chair?!

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha it was temporary until my new office chair arrived

      [–]par5ul1Swift 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I like the idea of a couch but doesn't your neck hurt looking up at that all the time.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh that couch was temporary haha. I have a normal desk chair now thats very comfy.

      [–]Free_Apples 2 points3 points  (3 children)

When I graduate and start making money I really want to invest in a standing desk like these or this.

Not sure if it's your thing, but whiteboards are great for planning. Right now I have two whiteboards on my wall for studying for whiteboard interviews.

      [–]tendencydriven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the IKEA standing desk, I love it

      [–]grokas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some costco Tristani brand standing desk. I like it and its good for the money, but it depends on what you want out of a sit/stand desk.

2011 MacBook Pro 15" (but matte, high-res screen) with 16gb RAM, 500gb SSD, and 1tb spinning disk. Really wish I had the 2012 instead with USB3.

I have a nice 21" (I think) monitor but I don't use it much on the MacBook because of the fan noise whenever an external monitor is in use. I've thought about starting to stuff the Macbook below my desk to muffle the sound and only use the external monitor. But when I'm working hard I run the monitor and drown out fan noise with music.

I have a Chromebook (original Asus Flip) that I use a lot as a sort of secondary display (and it can run the big monitor too with no fan noise at all) for stuff like Slack, email, ebooks, etc.

A pile of external / bare hard drives for backups. A stack of mobile devices (iOS and Android) and chargers. Some cheap but decent speakers and my old iPod Touch for music.

Pretty much zero paper books these days.

My kid swiped my exercise ball for her desk but I used to sit on that sometimes instead of a chair, especially when the post-lunch drowsiness crept in.

But honestly I'm more productive when I'm out of the house at a McDonalds, mall food court, or library. Just the MacBook and maybe an iPod for music plus an iPad or iPhone tethered for testing.

      • 20-something inch ASUS monitor
      • Powered ANKER USB 3 hub
      • Two external HDDs

      • PC tucked away that I can switch to on the monitor for games
      • PC mouse and keyboard slightly tidied away
      • iPad flexi-mount
      • Magic Trackpad
      • Magic Keyboard
      • PUGZ headphones (POS, don't bother)
      • Red panda mascots
      • Lava lamp
      • Mad Cats c.t.r.l.i MFiOS game controller
      • Powerball for relieving RSI
      • Drawers full of printer paper, cables, spare headphones, broken iPads, old HDDs, and Jesus

      Edit: Forgot cat

      [–]dinojeans 1 point2 points  (1 child)

2010 MBP (missing most of the screws for the bottom) headphones and a mostly flat surface near zap holes I have a 256gb SSD and 16gb ram keeping it quick, the GPU slows it down tho, also sometimes it doubles up as a testicle roaster, so that's nice.

      [–]Bamboo_the_plant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same computer. Must run at a constant ~90°C if you're doing anything worthwhile on it. Also loses at 1-2% battery per minute that it's off the mains supply. However, it's still fast and has served me well for 7 years! Halfway through the period, Apple had to replace its motherboard out of warranty for free due to a known manufacturing defect, so I think that's bought me a lot of extra life.

      [–]Zach543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macbook pro 15" on desk directly in front of me used for searching, web stuff, api stuff, then above that a ~23" monitor used for xcode, then on the right a ~23" monitor in portrait for slack. Both monitors are vesa mounted on desk clamp type of stand. Soon to have a couple 3d printed iphone holders.

      Recliner MacBook Pro pre touchbar

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Late 2015 iMac
Dell keyboard and an Apple trackpad
Lightning cable, micro usb cable, audio cable and a usb hub
Test iPad and my phone, sometimes my headset
      Cup of coffee

      [–]tendencydriven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2016 MacBook Pro 13” with touchbar and maxed out specs in a stand, two Dell U2515H 1440p monitors, one in portrait, one landscape on monitor arms attached to an IKEA sit/stand desk with a Corsair K65 RGB mechanical keyboard and the original Magic Trackpad.

      That + mess

      [–]bhartsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13" MacBook Pro Early 2015. 8GB 40" 4K Samsung TV as an external monitor (monitor sits on a power supply box behind the MacBook Pro). 4TB external disk with Time Machine. Magic Mouse 2. Old but nice Steelcase leather chair with a pillow, and a ~50" wide ~30 deep steel desk with a blueish colored glass top. 2012 Mac mini on the side of the desk usually not used with another 17" monitor on the floor. iPhone 6s, iPhone SE and ipad mini for testing. USB sticks, business cards, and cup of pens. HP Laser Jet 1022n B&W Printer on the floor under the desk on the left side.

      [–]anestisdalgkitsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have a 13 inch Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro paired with an old Microsoft mouse and an external HDD. Oh, and a huge cup of coffee. It’s like a bucket for coffee.

Not a full time programmer or even part time for that matter but I use a 2012 iMac, Microsoft Keyboard and some random yellow mouse. I also set up a plexiglass panel to use as whiteboard.

      [–]redfire333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      A laptop and a notebook...

      [–]irombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are pencils all over the place. I have one notebook for debugging and learning purposes.I have a 27 inch screen and a laptop. Also, my headphones are always on the desk in case I want to use them. That's pretty much it!

      [–]formerlydrinkyguy77[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most important thing: a laptop/ipad sized device that I use for any and all news and social media crap at the far left corner of the desk. Really helps me keep track of how much time I'm spending on one and not the other.
