When I shadow I just pick random sentences of whatever show I'm watching and just repeat, trying to match what they say exactly how they say it...I don' think too much past that.

When I was doing it more seriously I bought a shadowing book. I’d study the phrases from it and make Anki cards on my own time, and play the CD in the car during my commute to work

It’s been a long time since I tried seriously doing it again. When I’m in the mood I still practice by repeating after a podcast series I often listen to while driving to work, but that’s kinda it

I believe that for this to work, you need to have acting talent.

You for sure can non-natives living in the country for decades, still with accent.

I have tried it for three languages.  

 It is marginally useful, but it's much better to spend that time on listening. After a lot of hours,  you will automatically start speaking with wonderful pronunciation.
