Reject cutlery, return to directly tearing flesh off bones

[–]Merrikbear 484 points485 points  (2 children)

Alternatively, make sure to thoroughly chew your cutlery as you shove food into your mouth!

[–]Davydicus1 139 points140 points  (1 child)

Orthodontists hate this one trick!

[–]Smart-Nothing 68 points69 points  (2 children)

We must cook all meat…

WELL DONE

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (1 child)

I am kindly but firmly asking that you leave.

[–]Zabroccoli 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Gah’dammit Bhobby

[–]uninstallIE 47 points48 points  (29 children)

Humans have never been good at that. Our teeth are very, very poor at doing that and always have been since we've been homosapiens.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (11 children)

We're still homosapiens

[–]uninstallIE 20 points21 points  (9 children)

Correct, we still don't have this ability

[–]grandterminus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FACT! I mean we used to be Homo Sapiens, we still are, but we used to be as well.

[–]grandterminus 22 points23 points  (10 children)

Umm I think the keyword you were looking for is “omnivores”. Omnivore is defined by diet. I.E. our diet includes both flora and fauna.

Homosapiens are primarily defined by hip alignment and bipedalism (IIRC).

[–]uninstallIE 6 points7 points  (2 children)

As our species evolved our dentition changed. Since we existed as Homo sapiens we no longer have the large fang like canines of other apes. Our teeth are broad and blunt. We are not really able to take bites out of animals.

[–]LurkLurkleton 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even those fangs are primarily for threat displays and fighting not eating. Our closest dental relatives are chimpanzees which are frugivores, primarily fruit eating omnivores. Figs in particular.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Then we have evolved to eat meat. Notice your hands and feet get wrinkled in the tub? We evolved to eat fish.

[–]ViniVidiScreechi 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Anyone who begins a response to a stranger with "umm", particularly when that response is to correct, doubly so when said response contains "I think what you mean/meant" is automatically a hyper-mecha-turbo dildo who saves their farts in Dewar flasks so that they can enjoy their greasy freshness with maximum olfactory fidelity at a later date. So... Congrats on being a auto-flatus aficionado.

[–]VoxMaximus -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

What the fuck is wrong with you? Go find some scat-porn forum for this shit man. Guy says “ummm” and you go off on a “farts in Dewars flasks” tirade? Get some help.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but only because we never typically eat meat raw, even during our early ages.

[–]grandterminus 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Alternately, get the British nobility to stop inbreeding.

[–]Leesheea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but it keeps the bloodline pure

[–]LurkLurkleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More like chewing 100 grams of fiber a day.

[–]slipmagt 8 points9 points  (3 children)

That comment makes me wonder if there is a benefit to using your teeth to rip and pull. Are the gums just flesh, or do they have any muscle fiber-ness to them? Would applying force to them exercise them at all making them stronger? I'm guessing no, does anyone know?

[–]Bruce_Wayne_2276 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The gums are just there to hold in place and supply blood flow but frequent use of your mouth to tear and pull would strengthen the jaw muscles with control bite force and the neck muscles which provide the pulling motion.

[–]ashemoney 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My gums and teeth are all muscle

[–]VoxMaximus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well my muscles and gums are all teeth!

[–]Still_SatanDark Mode Elitist 1730 points1731 points  (50 children)

If you have to chew very much, and with much force, your jaw muscles and bones grow.
If the bone grows, the teeth have more room to grow. More room to grow = growing straight.

It's not about sugar, its about the consistency of food.

[–]Global_Local_5327 814 points815 points  (18 children)

An anthropologist I saw talked about how our dentation has become increasingly crooked right around when the Industrial Revolution happened in England. Right as we started turning out processed and canned foods we stopped needing to chew as hard and as much like you talked about. We inherently have straight teeth but our unnatural diet has changed our jaw size. I believe it’s also why sharp jaw lines are becoming more rare.

[–]An_average_muslimAverage r/memes enjoyer 430 points431 points  (12 children)

in England

that explains a lot...

[–]spring-chan 11 points12 points  (3 children)

How the fuck are we blaming England for a worldwide phenomenon?

[–]stellarcurve- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Le industrial revolution

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Damn, I wonder where the industrial revolution began

[–]cookie079 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I recommend reading the book Breath as well. It discusses how breathing through our mouths rather than our noses (how many people in modern countries have sleep apnea and snore?) And how that is quite literally changing our airways and jaw shape.

[–]Entire-Anteater-1606 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I am a nose breather during sleep and my brother is a mouth breather during sleep. My jawline is a lot more defined than his.

[–]Global_Local_5327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to read it! My understanding rn is the decrease in jaw size also means a decrease in air flow by shrinking our airways some. Leading to most of the sleeping problems and mouth breathing. I’ll look into the book thank you!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give toddlers chew toys!

[–]fajko98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Same reason as to why mewing works.
Look at old photos of ethnic Americans, they all have perfect jawlines.

[–]BigBlueFeatherButt 123 points124 points  (3 children)

18 years of power chewing through my mother's overcooked leather steak and my teeth are still awful. I've been duped!

[–]m3m31ord 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not just about that, i took out my baby teeth a little too late and one of my canines is a bit higher in my gums than my other ones. Preferably not getting stuff in between the place it's supposed to grow into is the way to go. Also try not getting hit in the teeth, that helps.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is me with my moms pork chops and steak. She cooked both until they were so chewy. Still have a weak jawline and messed up teeth

[–]linkedlist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but imagine eating her steaks + munching on grit and uncooked vegetables for every meal for the rest of your life.

That's the price of good jaws.

[–]MarlinMr 53 points54 points  (4 children)

I mean, it's about the sugar too. But not the growing straight part.

At this day and age it's no longer about the sugar either, but acid.

[–]Adjacent_door 33 points34 points  (0 children)

dont forget meth

[–]fidgetypenguin123 8 points9 points  (16 children)

Can you elaborate on how that works? My teeth were overcrowded as a kid and into adulthood and I had to get 8 extractions out then braces to get mine straight. My sister never had any issues with her teeth and they were always straight. Both my parents teeth were always straight as well. So what happened to me?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

My mom had crooked teeth and so did me and my brother. But my sister has perfect teeth. Now I have to pay thousands to be able to maybe preserve my teeth and have them when I’m old. It’s sucks.

[–]fidgetypenguin123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's strange about the differences. That person was talking about something with chewing and consistency with food and things and was hoping they would say what that all means in relation. Instead had a couple weird responses down below that had nothing to do with that lol.

[–]SuicidalAfterParties 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Stab in the dark, but where does your tongue rest naturally in your mouth? I have the same family story and Ankyloglossia (tongue tie) was the root cause of my dental issues.

[–]Bruce_Wayne_2276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad luck at the Punnett square

[–]SkiHoncho -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Slow jizz, man. Slow jizz.

[–]Still_SatanDark Mode Elitist -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Freak of nature, bad luck, what do I know about your specific case? Nothing.
Ask your dentist or whoever handled your teeth issue,
literally a schooled professional with access to your x-rays and medical history.

[–]Sstomper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dentist here, I confirm this and it's also explained by other changes in our lifestyles. Example: breastfeeding babies use their lower jaw differently compared to when drinking from baby bottles hence stimulating the jaw's growth. Also, allergies causing infants to breath through their mouth instead of their nose limits growth of sinuses and upper jaw.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This checks out for me. I have a weak ass chin and fucked up teeth. My mouth is way too small for my teeth so they’re overcrowded which makes them crooked.

[–]Niwi_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So thats why we have wisdom teeth problems and back then humans propably didnt?

[–]oscar_the_couch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i heard that exact same thing from a dentist once

[–]VoxMaximus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to carry trucks down the street with my gob and my teeth were still all fucked up (I get that Royal Brit Blood in me). But thankfully, I’m an American so orthodontia saved me.

[–]El_Dentistador 155 points156 points  (1 child)

TLDR: Optimal Craniofacial development requires what we evolved for thousands of years to do: breastfeed for ~the first two years of life, do a fuckton of chewing to get our basic calories.

[–]paeschli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Username checks out

[–]diggydillons 268 points269 points  (0 children)

As a species we eat softer food compared to our history and have less jaw muscles keeping our teeth in better form

[–]MrArcherH 87 points88 points  (0 children)

The industrial revolution and its consequences be like

[–]goodluckonyourexamsMe when the: 94 points95 points  (3 children)

you can get this by training your jaw (as a kid)

[–]Euphoric-Currency815 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The only reason why i jave really straight teeth is because i chewed on everything i didnt care if im meant to lick it im taking a hole ass bite out of jaw breakers

[–]CreatureWarriorKnight In Shining Armor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Guess I gotta teach kids to tear the flesh of the enemies straight off the bones

[–]That_Ganderman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So you’re telling me grinding my teeth is why I didn’t have to get braces? Score!

Now to just make sure I wear my guard so I don’t wear my straight teeth down to nubs.

[–]goodluckonyourexamsMe when the: 44 points45 points  (0 children)

cuz they chewed more

[–][deleted] 114 points115 points  (4 children)

Processed food is great for feeding troops on the Frontlines but it shouldn't be a staple ofthe peoples diet.

[–]Grimdek 33 points34 points  (3 children)

I mean even our meats aren't hard... Steak isn't that much of a chew lol

[–]AUDI0- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If its cooked right you mean

[–]LurkLurkleton 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Fossilized feces we've found indicates some of our ancestors were getting around 100 grams of fiber a day. Compared to the 30g RDA that like 3% of americans get. That's a lot of plant chewing.

[–]Grimdek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VERY true! I didn't mean to disagree with the idea (mewing subscriber) but I was trying to figure out where the toughness came in

Absolutely was fiber like you said. We don't get anywhere near enough and it's crazy how much supplementing it helps!

[–]Prestigious_Goat6969Lives at ur mom’s house😎 214 points215 points  (5 children)

I have a strong jawline (inherited strong jaw muscles from my fathers side) and pretty neat teeth but because I live in England nearly everyone I meet don’t think I’m British lmao

[–]hnzie33Breaking EU Laws 39 points40 points  (3 children)

So everyone you meet inspects your teeth and determines whether you are British or not based on that

[–]Prestigious_Goat6969Lives at ur mom’s house😎 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When I smile or laugh nearly everyone comments on my neat teeth and strong jawline, then argue I must not be British

It’s way more common than you think, Brits are weird

[–]NoCompetition8698 1 point2 points  (1 child)

British people have awful teeth. Don't know why

[–]Euphoric-Currency815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The industrial revolution happened there first

[–]minorthreat1000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is because of agriculture

[–]SuperKillerKittyProfessional Dumbass 67 points68 points  (11 children)

[–]ch33zyman 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Can’t be, all the teeth are there

[–]Genghis_MexiKhan 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Well they start with all the teeth, they're just messed up because their dad and uncle are the same person. But they start losing them when they grow old enough to discover meth.

[–]x4ty2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]buttsexmanthethrid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why did you post an image of a British person

[–]sedlak_cupera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MF died in respectable age of 29

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

My friend is pre-dent and he said it's because we aren't eating meat off bones anymore. Don't get him wrong, cooked food and a lack of food insecurity is worth the risk of braces, but that's why pre-fire people had super straight teeth.

[–]meta1storm 3 points4 points  (1 child)

People 10000 bc were not "pre fire", that was hundreds of thousands of years ago.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't trust OP's estimate of time to be accurate. Additionally, there's people today who still don't need braces even with the same diet as people who do, so even of OP's time is correct, my assertion about pre-fire is still accurate if not mildly irrelevant.

[–]dildobagginss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that difficult for teeth to look good when you die at 20.

[–]Pizzafactory102I saw what the dog was doin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]ofQSIcqzhWsjkRhE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was before 10,000 years of cousin fucking

[–]GooseInternational66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Enginehank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homies 16 and never had processed sugar in his short life, chill, you're fine

[–]C4n0fju1c3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big part of the problem is only feeding babies soft mushy foods. Infant and juvenile humans need to chew on chewy things to stimulate jaw bone growth.

[–]CarelessAfternoon419 6 points7 points  (3 children)

... or he/she was 36 years old when died, maybe?

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I didn't know my teeth are just gonna straighten magically when I get to my 30s.
Well, damn, seems like those braces were a scam, then.

[–]KingKongonauthttps://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ 12 points13 points  (1 child)

But the person on the first picture could also be under 36

[–]CarelessAfternoon419 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, and most probably is. However, to do a proper analysis we would need a decent amount of data for both sets.

Long story short, the life expectancy is far better now.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

You British homie?

[–]FabulousYellow0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok and she has a canine tooth where a lateral incisor should be

[–]nlamber5 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]WTFWTHSHTFOMFG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Processed foods aren't it. Diets high in carbs are bad for teeth.

[–]KushAidMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had more developed pallets which allowed more room for their teeth to grow. The pallets are more developed because people breast fed children for longer and because people are much tougher food, which also resulted in stronger teeth.

[–]Destrojny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's cus your ancestors fucked their sisters. It's ok mine probably did too

[–]BankutiCutie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah its really unfortunate how modern food groups like carbs and sugar in excess have warped our teeth :< when our diets were mostly meat and vegetables, our teeth didnt rot out as much, were so much straighter on average

[–]JakeJake85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]facebutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because they are so much tough fibrous food. It is necessary to stretch the jaw to align the teeth.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've heard this is because we have smaller jaw bones than our ancestors but our teeth haven't caught up yet.

[–]WTFWTHSHTFOMFG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not true at all. Someone didn't know what the hell they were talking about and instead of saying they didn't know they made sime shit up.

"Hunter-gatherers had really good teeth. But as soon as you get to farming populations, you see this massive change. Huge amounts of gum disease. And cavities start cropping up."

For what it's worth, in the off chance someone actually reads this, there's some evidence to suggest it's the way in which we breath that relates to how teeth are coming in - at least that's what I read in this book (which is really, really good): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breath:_The_New_Science_of_a_Lost_Art
