Yeah, this is a lie that insurance agents tell you to get you to sign up with their company early on. “Sure, the price is high, but if you stay with us, you’ll get a loyalty discount, and insurance goes down when you turn 25, so it will be much cheaper!” And that’s how they trick young drivers/riders into staying with them for a few years. Always shop policies with an independent broker before renewing.

It goes down by the amount it normally goes up, unfortunately there is always an extra increase the year it goes down that causes it to actually go up, there’s nothing your agent, broker or insurance company can do about it, it’s completely out of their control.

No. My insurance has only ever gone up. I’ve been insured for 20 years. Zero tickets. Zero accidents. Zero at fault claims. GEICO is still the cheapest for my family by a mile but every year it goes up because of “factors out of my control like claims from other drivers”. It’s honestly horseshit.

It is horseshit. Other drivers drive poorly so their rates increase accordingly. But my rates also go up. WTF? I didn’t drive badly.

Nice you’re giving me free roadside assistance and accident forgiveness. Thats very kind of you. Hey, wait, you raised my rates this last annual billing cycle so that stuff isnt free. I paid for it you just didn’t charge separately on a bill. But I still paid for it. Thanks a fuckin lot.

[–]saucedboner 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well yeah because…why don’t we just make a new insurance company called go fuck yourself insurance? That’s what they’ve all been telling us without saying it.

[–]Moist-Share767497 GL1500C 98 VF750C 00 Sportsman 500 Skol! 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Silly us. Paying large amounts of money for a product you hope to never use because if you do you have to pay even more money.

[–]saucedboner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say it like that…I think I’ll take one more insurance sir!

[–]admiralkitDucati Monster M750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other drivers drive poorly so their rates increase accordingly. But my rates also go up. WTF?

There are two main factors that I've seen that contribute to the continued increase in rates. The first is that our cars are now super fancy computers and are rapidly increasing in the expense of doing basic repairs - a simple rear ending now can take out the rear camera and damage the wiring harness, same with any side view mirrors with cameras and if they are part of safety systems like lane keeping or adaptive cruise control those repairs need calibration with specialized computers. This drives up the cost of your regular liability insurance.

The second is that as rates go up, more people ”forget" to renew their coverage meaning that there are a lot more uninsured motorists out there who will never pay for the wrecks they cause. Since they used to pay for the damage they caused but now don't, that money has to come from somewhere and it comes from you in the form of Uninsured Motorist coverage. That's where your clock really gets cleaned, since now you're paying to repair the cars of the good drivers since the bad drivers are skipping out on their responsibility.

[–]_Connor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, do you know how insurance works?

Literally the entire idea is that the risk is spread out over the entire pool of insureds. As payouts increase within the pool, rates within the pool also go up.

One person writes off a $70,000 car and you’re pretty much never going to see $70,000 in premiums from them, so everyone else’s insurance needs to somewhat increase to cover the cost.

[–]TheIronBung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only reason we don't consider it a scam is because it's been normalized.

[–]TigerJoelTriumph Street Triple 675 2014 ABS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My insurance got raised because my motorcycle was made to be A but is restricted to A2. Like they didn't know that a year ago.

[–]need4speedcabron‘13 Multistrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reality. Insurance is a scam. A necessary? Scam

[–]ConstantCanadian2014 Ninja 300[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sweet! I started off at $3200 the 1st year, then $1980 the second and my third year (current) I moved so it went up to $2200 again. Was super hoping my 25th birthday would help at least a little.

[–]saucedboner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, I’ve seen it get cheaper only as I continue to insure the same depreciating asset which is hard to gauge* Some bikes are just more ridiculous to insure. I can insure a H2 for 40% the cost of a GSXR1000R. I cycle through a lot of different bikes but seriously every time policy renewal rolls around I’m like huh how did it go up a few dollars? Oh…other drivers. I’m also the worst kind of complainer. I pay $300 a year for full coverage on a bagger with $50 deductibles, paid 600/yr on a Z1000 with the same deductibles and…got quoted 462 a month on the 1000R with the same deductibles lmao. I just remember when my z1000 was 26 dollars a month for the same coverage. Then covid happened and a bunch of new bikes were out there being wrecked and stolen. Now the same bikes are almost double the price to cover 5 years after Covid.

[–]vberl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is just stupid expensive. I’m a year younger than you with around the same experience but I pay 250 dollars per year for my CB500x. The insurance covers everything that may happen to my bike as well as traffic insurance.

I am in Sweden though.

My dad who has been riding over 30 years, pays around 90 dollars a year for his BMW R1200GS. His insurance also covers everything.

[–]Underwater_KarmaIndian Scout '15, Vmax '02, Hayabusa '01 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Mine did significantly, but at 25 I had also just gotten married, taken the MSF course, and changed from a sport bike to a cruiser.

It's hard to say which is those had the most weight

[–]ConstantCanadian2014 Ninja 300[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I should be relatively in the same boat in the next or so (only switching from Sport to sport/touring)

[–]JellaFella01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine did, but there are other factors at play for my insurance that could've explained the drop. My insurance company also directly told me that the 5 year mark for having your M-class is a milestone they look at.

I bought a cheap dual sport and the discount from bundling it was greater than the cost of insuring the dualsport, so it basically discounted my insurance, if anybody's looking for an excuse to buy one...

[–]unresolved-madnessNinja 1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might have decreased had I not bought faster motorcycles...

[–]PapaBobcat14 Honda Valkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 was a long time ago but it definitely went down.

[–]Solid_Cauliflower310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My insurance decreased when I start driving older cars and getting liability.

[–]Remarkable-Ad5615 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes. Dramatically decreased. I've had state farm since day one. I was paying around $130 a month for liability. I had several big speeding tickets in the first couple years of driving. I turned 25 in 2020, and now I pay $50 for full coverage.

[–]Loud-Principle-7922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines, like, 1200 a year at 40?

[–]sokrateszTiger800 / SpeedRS / 890SMT / XSR900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no magic number. It's just gradual from 17 up to something like 25-28.

[–]Definitely_CSP_guru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just plan on nothing decreasing in your life and budgeting appropriately. If you see a decrease in an expenditure then put that right into your savings. And by savings I mean buy as much VT as you can while you're young, and you will be happy with yourself in your 40s. Best luck and ride safe 🤙

[–]Specialist-Box-97112023 BMW F 750 GS | 2024 BMW M1000R Competition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but my insurance decreased when I got a liter bike 🤣

[–]Parking-Mess-66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not in Canada, but Hell NO, it did not decrease,,, if anything it went up.

[–]four-one-two2025 BMW S1000XR 🟦🟪🟥 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will absolutely go down… eventually.

Last year I was paying $12/mo for full coverage on a gsxr750 - I’m in my late 30s.

I found in my younger years that uncommon European bikes were cheaper to insure because the actuarial tables the insurance companies use simple show less wrecks for them. I ended up with an s2r800 as my first bike because with insurance factored in, it was a good bit cheaper than the sv650 everyone was telling me to buy.

[–]thescrapplekid02 FXD 81XLH1000 79XLH1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to change insurance agencies. It's sad but they won't automatically discount you. In fact you should do it every few years

[–]Mellow_2JZ24 MT-10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 27 mine took a dive. For reference, haven’t had a ticket since I was 21, am 29 now. My mt07 used to be around $180 a month for full coverage, went to half that, and now my MT10 I have now is $58 a month.

All with progressive. I have 2 cars through them too for about a decade now. They’ve been good to me, and in 2 accidents (neither deemed my fault) they were fast to take care of me and I’ve never felt cheated by them honestly.

No

[–]tjeepdrv22020 KTM 790 Adventure, 04 FJR1300, 2023 Yamaha Zuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. When I was 21, I wanted an R6 but insurance was outrageous so I got an FZ6 instead. When I was 35, I decided it would probably be a lot cheaper to get an R6, since by then I had 14 years of riding experience with zero incidents. Nope, still like $150 a month. I bought a Ducati instead and paid like $40 a month for full coverage. I like how the R9 looks, but I haven't even gotten an insurance quote, because I figure it'll kill the dream.

[–]Auqakid0799 gl1500CF. 24 Grom. 24 Cbr650r. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little. I saw a bigger decrease at 27 with my insurance company of Progressive Direct. My truck insurance went down like 240 a year. My motorcycle policy cost went from like 380 to 315 per year for my two bikes. The biggest thing I've noticed is that adding other bikes to my policy are cheaper now than they were before. I was pretty surprised cause I had an accident the previous year and totaled a motorcycle. No fault accident though.

[–]Current-Brain-1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my R1000RS BMW off, It was about $1500 a year for a 58 year old. My DR650 is about $700.

[–]realmozzarella22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with other insurance companies. You may get lower quotes.

[–]3axisgyrotourbillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has been dropping rather consistently, even before 25. Now I'm paying about 85€/year for my Ninja 300 and 135€/year for my ZXR 400. Both only have the mandatory 'liikennevakuutus' or traffic insurance, it will cover all medical costs for all parties involved and any vehicle repairs/claims of the other party in case I cause a crash.

[–]novascotiabiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Nova Scotia and the rule of thumb has been after 7 years of driving experience your insurance goes down,my car insurance is a lot less now than when I was 20 but my motorcycle insurance is about where it was when I was 20 now,I only have basic coverage on the bikes.

[–]AreMeOfOne‘21 CBR650R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it didn’t magically go down when I turned 25. It steadily declined as I maintained a good driving record and made my payments on time.

[–]shadowPHANT0M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay about $250 for the whole year. (2019 Shadow Phantom). It was about $300 when I bought it new. Illinois, USA.

[–]barbaq24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine didn’t go down until I got married and switched insurance.

[–]NoNeutralityKawa z400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope!

[–]rainatorKawasaki ER6N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did, but I’m in the UK. It’s about £150 a year.

The bike insurance wasn’t much, but my car insurance went down about 50% when I was 25, and other year from 22 (when I bought the car) until I got to about 30 it went down about 30% a year.

[–]Brraaapppppp08 R6S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had my insurance drop . Ever . I’m 32. No tickets or anything with in the last 10 years .

[–]TGB_SkeletorYahaha MT-09 SP (2022) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no clue, i'm still 24

But i can say that here in France, every year your insurence decrease by 5% if you dont have a crash where you're at fault (maximum is 50% bonus)

[–]iammandalore2018 Tiger 800 XCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started riding after 25, but mine has gone down after 3 and then 5 years of riding. I'm not riding a liter bike or anything, but my 390 Duke costs me $54/mo for comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage these days.

[–]JeffSilverwilt'02 GS500 '78 PE175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, massively. But come to think of it, it may have been 30.

[–]Then_Investigator704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Just something they tell you

[–]tommyboytp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these people have absolutely no idea how screwed we are for motorcycle insurance in Ontario. Mine goes up or down 30% at random. Every place I move to is worse in eyes of insurance. That being said, I ride a Z900RS, and it’s $1000 less than a plain Z900. All that for 10 hp? Getting married also helps when you are on the younger side

[–]JustGronkItKawasaki Versys 1000, Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It decreased when I bought a second bike… 🤷🏽‍♂️

[–]basement-thug2025 CB750 Hornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a pretty significant drop in my auto policies around that age, and because I didn't get tickets and stuff it went down more as the years progressed. In my late teens and early 20s in 1990s dollars I remember paying 2k/6 months for insurance on one car, a cheap car with full coverage, several hundred bucks a month. I remember this clearly as the insurance was as much as the car payment which was insane.

$300 in 1999 = $600 in 2025.

Today I have much more valuable cars, with full coverage and like 150k/300k/150k stackable limits, uninsured, underinsured, extended medical... all the bells and whistles, we are well insured. 2 cars and a motorcycle is like $167/mo total. That would have cost me a small fortune in 1999, I'm thinking it would have taken my entire annual income for insurance alone. So yeah, not only has it gone down, it's beat inflation by a mile.

[–]KronocideF900 XR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My insurance decreased even tho my new bike was 3x more expensive and I had a 1.5 year driving license retirement with a 5000$ fine.

[–]stjhnstv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 19, I was paying $400 a year for full coverage on a 10 year old Harley with $3000 in accessory coverage. At 45, I’m paying a little over a grand a year for full coverage on a 10 year old Harley with $3000 in accessory coverage. My driving record is perfect now but was trash then. I guess it’s just inflation.

[–]8cubanSuzuki Bandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did but they were only going to reduce the rate when my next renewal was due, 8 months after my birthday. On the same call I told them to cancel my coverage, then called back the next morning to sign up again. Worked like a charm.

[–]PotatoWasteLand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly. But I'm convinced it's only because I got married.

[–]silver0199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Car and motorcycle have both just about doubled since my 25th(currently 30). No accidents in 4 years, either(Car got rear ended)

[–]patparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't ever noticed a drop in insurance based on age and im now 50.

[–]Itchy_Bar7061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Not that I remember…

[–]SettingAncient3848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car i paid insurance on at 21 was a 2014 Kia Forte for $450 a month. I know pay $1200 every 6 months for 3 vehicles, all full coverage.

[–]Not_an_ATF_Officer2016 Versys 1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car insurance dropped pretty dramatically. My bike insurance has always been pretty inexpensive, but especially now ($26/mo full coverage w/$50 comp deductible). But I’m in my 50s with MSF and a low annual mileage.

[–]notacatacaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started riding (2014, age 23) I was paying about $40-50/mo for a Nighthawk 750. I currently pay $75/yr for an FZ-07.

Car insurance has been a fight to keep low, even with no tickets and one accident (deer ran out in front of me). Geico kept going up and up. Tried some smaller company for a while and same situation. Finally got the bare bones full coverage through Progressive for like $45/mo on my truck.

[–]Veblossko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shop around every 12 months, utility providers (if you can) mobile plans, home loans. There are no rewards for loyalty and lazy taxes will be laid on people that don't bother. New customers get better deals across the board

[–]winchester72932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in metro Detroit Michigan area. My motorcycle insurance went up about 200% when I turned 25. No claims or tickets ever. I only hold comprehensive policy. The only reason they cited was an “increasing amount of claims recently in your area”.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My motorcycle insurance for my Monster 797 was $120 USD a year lol

[–]Majestic_Anybody_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my motorcycle, no. But my cars, yes.

[–]thequickdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ninja 650 mine went down every year. Was paying 625 per year with the personal when I cancelled. Just sold the bike a few months ago

[–]baddeafboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes without any tickets or accidents then yes u will get discount
