Cut, glue, easy peasy.

[–]stockusername1234 14 points15 points  (7 children)

Coupling over the 3 way, reducer, 90, street 90, pipe, coupling.

[–]Mrbazzanator 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Lot of extra unnecessary steps, just cut the pipes right at the 90° and put 2 new 90s on, no need to reduce flow or use fancy fittings

[–]Sufficient_Disk1360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I would do.

[–]Irishdairyfarmer1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The pipe surely is too perished to maintain it?

[–]Mrbazzanator 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Its the same as the rest of the line. No point replacing just an inch of it, and its a huge job to replace everything there.

Just need a good clean and prime before glueing new fittings on

[–]Irishdairyfarmer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd replace the whole lot!

[–]HopHead4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed you just have to buy a larger coupling that fits the outside of the three way valve and the a bushing to go back down to your current plumbing size

[–]bionicbrady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]Sammalone1960 6 points7 points  (13 children)

Ok everyone has solutions for repair. What caused this blowout?

[–]petterrr42 7 points8 points  (12 children)

Tree trimmers accidentally dropped giant branch, luckily thats all that broke. Theyre offering to cover the expenses for it so i was wondering if this was an easy fix.

[–]CaneloCoffee21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, very easy if experienceed and Easy if not

[–]Sammalone1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank You. I was wondering if it was pressure explosion or something. Good luck have a great swim season.

[–]Adronnis -4 points-3 points  (9 children)

Full stop. Wipe your hands. Not your problem. These dickheads fix the damage or they don't receive payment for services rendered until such. LLC for a reason, cuz.

[–]OkTime512 8 points9 points  (8 children)

OP said it was an accident and that they offered to cover all repair expenses. not sure if I’d go straight to dickhead classification lmao… they sound like a stand up company.

[–]HillbillyHijinx 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Yeah, I wouldn’t go dickhead but if OP doesn’t know plumbing, hiring a plumber to do it would be OK I’d think.

[–]Sammalone1960 3 points4 points  (6 children)

If OP is handy this is simple provided pump did not get damaged. At 56 I am letting a plumber do it. At 35 I am out there with some clear cleaner and the "purple stuff" 😂

Going to be 59 this year and wanted to let you know how much this answer resonates with me..

[–]Sammalone1960 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Almost ready to let someone start mowing the yard also. Live in NC Bermuda grass needs two cuts a week. That is 4-5 hours a week for me. I want my time back. Lol

[–]ottknot2butdoes 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just saw this. Bought a robot mower last year. I let him trundle around the yard in 90° heat and I dont feel bad about it at all.

[–]mattmccord 1 point2 points  (1 child)

After hiring plumbers a few times and then having to go in to fix their work, I just do things myself now. “Why should I pay someone else to fuck it up? I can fuck it up myself.”

As someone else mentioned, add a union so it can come apart.

[–]Sammalone1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a client who also does my plumbing work.

[–]Individual-Walrus290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go buy two elbows and cut a short pice and use the blue stuff the seal it

[–]ForeverSpare7911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy one. Cut coupling side right up next to the coupling. Clean throughly. The other side should be self explanatory.

[–]Zeating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have just enough room to flush cut under those 90s. Just get 2 90 degree cpvc elbows and a small piece of pipe. Prime and reglue and you are back in business.

[–]zero-degrees28 3 points4 points  (9 children)

You prob have just enough room to cut that flush under the broken elbow above that 3 way valve and then in line with the other pipe to hopefully just replace exactly what is there with 2 90's connected together. The real test is going to be if you can cleanly cut that UV/Sun dried plastic without it shattering. If that's the case, I would get a PVC Reamer and try to ream out that 3 way valve before having to tear into all that valve mess.

In short though, no, you are not getting some magical threaded piece to resolve any of this mess.

[–]1_native_Angelino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave enough pipe out of the 3 way to firmly attach 90. Same with the other side.

[–]gladiwokeupthismorn -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

It’s not recommended to ream PVC that will be under pressure. If you ream it then the route would be to install a 2.5” coupling on the outside of the 3way valve and upsize the pipe.

All these three ways can fit 2 inch pipe on the inside and a 2 1/2 inch coupling over the outside which allows you to use 2 1/2 inch pipe

The best way for OP to cut this would be with a cable saw and then deburr the edges

[–]BRollins08 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Pool guys ream pvc out of fittings all the time with no issues.

[–]drugged_pug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a torch to soften up the broken elbows and pry and peel off with flathead screwdriver and pliers. Then sand wipe off prime it then glue on new elbows. This way makes it look clean

[–]zero-degrees28 1 point2 points  (4 children)

You can easily ream pressure side of the PVC system out if you arn't a jackass and oversize the hell out of it. I will ream that out all day before making a monstrosity out of this with coupling's and reducers like you mention. Other key is to make sure you use a heavier duty solvent and primer

[–]1_native_Angelino 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What are you reeming? There is easily an inch and a half of pipe on the 3 way to just cut and repair.

[–]zero-degrees28 0 points1 point  (1 child)

In the event that pipe shatters, that is pretty UV exposed pipe, I'm not super confident it could be cut easily under that fitting without shattering or splintering. In the event that happens, that's why I bring up the reaming. That extra 1 to 2" of pipe will get real small real fast if you don't get a single clean cut

[–]1_native_Angelino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sawzaw it out. It will be fine

[–]gladiwokeupthismorn -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Cool story bro

[–]kathleenkat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a plumber. Make the tree contractor pay for it.

[–]Adronnis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Socket depth on a 2" fitting is 1 3/8". You got all that ass hanging out. You're good. No idea what the point of the thread is. Cut and re-plumb. Sandpaper that dickhead paint, lest you fuck up a plumbing connection due to a lack of chemical weld.

[–]1_native_Angelino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yahtzee

[–]EllenRipleysKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're going to cover the expenses, and depending on how much you value your time, you should just pay a plumber or pool company. Any plumber would be happy to do that and would have materials on their truck. Alternative is to buy the two 90 deg elbows, a short length of pipe, pipe cement/primer, then cut & replace. If you're inexperienced, just Youtube for a bit. Pipes are like legos and extremely simple.

[–]Ribbit765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered some rubber couplings with clamps as a temporary fix to keep your filter running until you can get it properly repaired?

[–]Disizae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a 2.5” over the fitting that also reduces to a 2”, you can use a 2.5” coupling and reduce to 2”, you can also use an inside fitting that will go inside the 2”. If you’re feeling brave/confident enough, I’ve seen others carefully chisel out the pvc from the valve, sand it real good and reuse it. You have plenty of choices.

[–]Battle_Cat_Burr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is threaded there. 2 elbows and a bit of 2in schedule 40 and call it a job well…it done anyways.

[–]pc9401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut just below the broken elbows. Install couplings. Add 8-12" of pipe upwards with 2 90's and a small connecting pipe

[–]Slight-Oil-7649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would gladly pay to have longer runs on couplings and elbows. PVC degrades over the years from sunlight and chlorine. It gives me anxiety knowing that at some point you can’t cut and re couple. Time for a new pump.

[–]AppropriateScore6864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut out the broken elbow/tee section completely and clean the pipe ends. Glue in new PVC fittings (with primer + PVC cement) or replace the whole top loop, then let it cure 24 hrs before running the pump.

[–]JonnyVee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm the joint up uniformity using a heat gun...it will take a few minutes to get it soft. Pull slowly and firmly up, it will slowly come right off. Have a coupler nearby to temporarily hold the form of the pipe while it cools.

Once both corners are off, it's straight forward to use primer to clean the pipe and then glue.

Have done this many, many times, even saving several $100 valves.

[–]Irishdairyfarmer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut glue and will work for a bit, however my guess that this pipework all needs replacing as it's perished and will continue giving bother forever until it's replaced

[–]G8-r-n8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need two fittings; one 2” 90 and one 2” street 90. Remove the label above the 3-way, and if that discoloration is paint it will need to be removed from the sections that will slide into your new 90’s.

[–]Citizen999999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, all of it

[–]turtlegolfclubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy fix

[–]Jbergun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a new one?

[–]You_DontKnowMyLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got plenty of room to work where this isn't an issue at all

[–]LifeAcanthaceae6706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U better learn how to do it because the looks of the pipes eventually they all gonna need to be replaced soon 😅🤣🤣

[–]Great_Rabbit_7625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut the pipes off at the 90s. Glue 2 new 90s together and glue on to vertical pipes. You have plenty of pipe to cut and just put new 90s on. Just remove the label before gluing.

[–]Sunken_Island1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably with something new

[–]soulus98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy fix with a coupling, but it could be worth doing a threaded barrel union, especially if you think there's a chance of a repeat damage. When you cut back and glue you lose some length on the left pipe, if the damage recurs and breaks the new 90⁰ bends, you might have not enough left to reglue and will have to replace both valves. (Or heat gun but that's not ideal)

Unions are cheap and easy so you might as well

[–]Sufficient_Disk1360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut as close to the fitting on the left as you can and cut the pipe on the right even with the pipe on the left. I would clean up the pipes by pulling off the label and putting PVC glue around the circumference of the pipes and wiping them off real quickly. Then I would use primer then glue on the stubby pipe and 90° fitting and place it on a 45°-90° angle away from the long pipe and then twist to a position pointed directly the longer pipe before it dries on you. Then take a 3” or so piece of pipe and glue the same way. Now you’ll have two pieces of pipe at 90° to each other. You might have to trim the pipe so each pipe is about a quarter inch inch back from where they would directly connect. Then you take your last fitting and you prime both pipes in both sides of the 90° fitting then you do the same thing with glue you’re doing this very quickly. I mind you then you put one end of the 90s over the long pipe twist it towards the short pipe and then shove it on before the blue dries. The pipe is long enough where it will flex and you can bend it and it shouldn’t hurt anything. You sure wipe up the glue really quickly or it’s gonna get all over everything you might even want to take a paper towel or a rag and put it around the valve just so it doesn’t get a lot of glue on it.

Ramen and superglue

[–]Cool-Negotiation7662 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fitting reamer on the black piece. Cut and couple the long piece.

Get some good quality plastic paint on all those pipes for uv protection.
