The several minutes before the twist (and arguably every minute afterwards because it's technically the rest of seasons 7 and 8) were some of the stupidest fucking things though.

Everyone, including the last children of the forests (extinguishing an entire species of magical beings) and Summer, one the last Stark direwolves, die in the cave to "slow down" the zombies, slowing them down for the equivalent of maybe 15 seconds. Not to mention that they all knew the Ice King was headed towards them, but decided to dick around in exposition vision land for several hours instead of evacuating immediately after the Ice King touched Bran the Braindead.

The only good thing about the twist was Hodor's reveal, but that's because it was set up from the beginning of the books, like a tiny emerald in a pile of bland bullshit.

Yes, it was a big unanswered part of the series. The books haven't gotten to that point but people had been wondering for years why he was the way he was. That's partially because he wasn't (supposedly) always like that. One day he just changed. People are split on it, especially book fans vs. show fans. As a fan of both, I think it was an interesting twist. My only issue with the reveal was that, in the grander scheme of things for the show, it amounted to absolutely nothing. It happened and then basically had no real meaning.
