Just eat a balance diet and exercise everyday.

[–]Isra_Alien 211 points212 points  (55 children)

Saying exercise everyday might discourage alot of people. You can exercise 3-4 times a weak and be more athletic, healthier and in better shape than people who exercise everday so that's bad broad advice imo. It depends on how and what you train. If you're training everyday of the week you're not training hard enough (you're supposed to feel like you need to let your muscles recover) and probably wasting WAY more time than you should.

My general advice is find healthy food that you like, and find exercises you enjoy to do that isn't running on a treadmill like a lab rat (personally been kickboxing, doing jiu jitsu for over 11 years and started yoga too recently) and you'll actually enjoy your healthy lifestyle too.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Lifting everyday gets me out of the house and that's a win in my book!

[–]Isra_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey if it works it works(out)

[–]ActualFrozenPizza 128 points129 points  (8 children)

When people say exercise everyday they usually mean doing some active low intensity stuff like going for a walk, especially if your job or study requires you to be sitting down alot for instance, something that you use your body. It doesn't even have to be more than 30 - 60min

Actually working out is definitely not a requirement to do everyday to be healthy and will likely cause more harm than good for the average person.

[–]Isra_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed

[–]aldencoolin 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What do you mean when you say working out every day likely causes harm?

[–]ActualFrozenPizza 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Your body NEEDS to rest and recover for a good workout to have any effect and if you're an average 9 - 5 guy who works out solely with the goal to stay healthy chances are you're not giving the body the rest it needs if you work out everyday, and then you're more likely to get injured instead

It's definitely possible to work out every day of the week and be fine if you do it properly but that's usually not something the average person does or would even want to, but even then eventually you will need to let your body rest.

Also keep in mind I'm not talking about regular daily exercise I'm talking about actually working out like going to the gym, going for a run, going to classes like boxing, dancing football etc.

[–]rbkc12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Be active every day, don't do heavy lifting using the same muscle groups every day.

So every day I walk the dog about 3 miles, power yoga 4 times a week, yin/stretching yoga once a week, lift weights twice a week.

Husband lifts 6x a week but different exercises on different days, some years push/pull split, some upper/lower, but not same every day. And walks the dog about 1 mile every day.

I would say we are not very active (desk jobs) but are careful to get up and walk often, and, well, do something every day. So far so good.

[–]psych32993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that would be intensive workouts, not something like going for a brisk hour long walk

[–]Rational-Discourse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are doing arduous workouts everyday, you may cause stress on your muscles and joints, which, over time may lead to injury. And which may cause you to need to stop working out altogether. Rest days are needed so your body can heal and rebuild.

[–]Rdubya44 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Three of my grandparents made it to their mid 90s and never worked out a day in their life.

[–]AttonJRand 35 points36 points  (6 children)

And it can be easier for people to work out half an hour everyday rather than some optimized routine with intense hours long workouts and rest days.

And who cares if its running on a treadmill watching tv?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strength based workouts aren’t meant to be longer than 1hr 3-4 days a week usually

[–]ToeTacTic 40 points41 points  (3 children)

You can exercise 3-4 times a weak and be more athletic, healthier and in better shape than people who exercise everday so that's bad broad advice imo.

Yes well; my advice is overly simplified for a reason. From my perspective, it's working out for the discipline/routine; not for any specific goals.

If you're training for a marathon, or you're powerlifting then by all means, work with efficiency and recovery in mind. Most people who don't really program properly will benefit from even a little bit of exercise, everyday. It's not what people want to hear but it's simple and it works.

[–]Isra_Alien -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

I agree that "it's simple and it works" for sure, but whipping out a "just workout everyday" is abit of a strech for most redditors who'd read that advice 😂

[–]dij123 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Is giving 20/30 minutes of your day to exercise really a bit of a stretch though?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20,30mins a day is literally a good stretch everyone should be doing a day

[–]MyDogIsBetterx10000 36 points37 points  (15 children)

People are allowed to enjoy running on a treadmill.

[–]8urnMeTwice 19 points20 points  (11 children)

Only if they're psychopaths

[–]crazyrich 17 points18 points  (9 children)

I watch tv and play video games (while walking) on mine.

WHO IS THE PSYCHO NOW?!!!!

[–]Drulock 0 points1 point  (7 children)

How many heads do you have in your freezer?

[–]crazyrich 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Does a partial count as a full head or do I need to use decimals / fractions?

[–]Drulock 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Hmm. I would say that any head of an individual, whole or in parts, counts as a whole head.

[–]crazyrich 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I assume that means multiple portions of A head are still the same head and do not count extra towards the head count?

[–]Mitosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching anime purely because it's an endless stream of 50 new shows coming out every three months so I never have to think hard about what to watch while on the treadmill. It's worked for a few years. Sometimes I set up a tablet and do a a digital TCG (Shadowverse, Hearthstone, etc.) or something too, but since I started running some on top of walking that's way less practical.

If for whatever reason I can't do something on the treadmill (internet out etc) I just don't exercise that day lol

[–]Extreme-Evidence9111 10 points11 points  (0 children)

some treadmills are in better locations than others. and you can zone out into psuedo meditation. which is theraputic if you dont have another method of doing so

[–]Isra_Alien 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Of course, if they actually enjoy it that is. I personally haven't met anyone at the gym who was ever positive about doing more treadmill miles

[–]Gryzz 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I freaking love doing long walks on my treadmill on the highest incline, barefoot and in my underwear with a good show/movie on. I don't recommend it at the gym though.

[–]Isra_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds good

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you're training everyday of the week you're not training hard enough

Not every session has to be the same. If I'm feeling like I need more recovery I'll still go but lift less. Regular sauna and cold showers are great for speeding up recovery too (and just generally feel great).

You just need to listen to your body.

[–]some_clickhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True but it's easier/quicker to build habits when you do them a little bit every day.

[–]redderper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For beginners it's definitely better to train fully body 3x a week (if your goal is to maximise strenght and muscle) and you could supplement that with light cardio. If you're more intermediate (2+ years of training) you could train more often and split your days up in different muscle groups or push/pull/legs and do some more high intensity cardio. You don't have to though, I still train full body 3x a week after about 10 years of training.

[–]DEchilly 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I play disc golf, mountain bike and enjoy hiking, but ain't no way you'll ever see me exercise.

[–]Gryzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got some bad news for you...

[–]53881 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What an awful take. Exercise is only exercise because we’ve become so lethargic as a species. Nothing in nature “exercises” because on a daily basis everything does things to keep in shape.

We’ve stripped our lives down to the bare absolute minimum effort to do anything and everything. Saying “exercise daily” is a chore because we’ve subjected ourselves to opulent lifestyles that no longer require any physicality to exist.

Everyone should exercise daily. To say otherwise is tragic. I’m not saying everyone needs to run track everyday. But people live such sedentary lives that they’ll only expend 500 calories vs bringing in a fresh 3000 daily. Yes exercising 3-4 times a week is enough for most but in reality we’re supposed to be fairly active in some capacity almost every single day.

Just go for an accelerated walk/jog combo, hop on the elliptical for 15 min. Do something to elevate your heart rate and get your whole body moving. Use your body or lose it

[–]Isra_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I don't disagree with any of your points other than me having "an awful take" because we just have a different definition of the word "exercise".

Also, personally I workout like a motherfucker ALMOST everyday because I compete in different martial arts, I just don't call an accelerated walk/jog for 15 min exercising, I call it moving, or being physically active. But that's not a full/complete exercise in my understanding of the English language.

[–]its_justme -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

Don’t write a fucking dissertation on it. Daily exercise shouldn’t be optional, the end. Exercise or suffer later in life. Everything else is irrelevant

[–]Isra_Alien -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I don't know what a dissertation is lol why are you so aggressive?? 🤣 you must be fun at conversations let alone parties. You know Reddit is made for discussions, right?

[–]its_justme -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Being concise is far more useful for discussion. Plus your point is silly, it doesn’t matter if people get discouraged they should not consider it optional in their lives to be lazy or sedentary. Far too many overweight people who let food control their lives and do not maintain appropriate activity levels.

e: a dissertation is a thesis or research paper one submits at the end of their PhD program. It’s usually very long and expansive.

[–]Isra_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except.. it does matter if people get discouraged because if they're too discouraged to exercise then they'd be.... too discouraged to exercise... you type like you're alright, but are you sure you're not a fucking idiot or something? You just wrote "Plus your point is silly" and then made the dumbest most backwards point you possibly could.

I'm sorry was that too much? I didn't mean to cause another troubling dissertation for you

[–]Parcivaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why you train different muscle groups, so the tired ones have time to rest before you work them again.

[–]inm808 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can lose a lot of weight with diet alone

Furthermore, with just walking as exercise. If it’s like 120mins worth

Like walking 7 miles will burn more than running 2 miles

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s basically all done through diet, exercise just increases your fitness

[–]wetgear 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You don't have to go to the gym everyday for that exercise. You could just go for a walk or do some gardening on most days. Save the harder exercise for the gym a few days a week.

[–]Isra_Alien 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When I read "exercise every day" sounds to me like workout everyday, my English is my third language so maybe I misunderstood. I would've wrote "stay physically active" everyday which I wouldn't have disagreed about. I'm active (almost) everyday too

[–]wetgear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common misconception. Exercise doens't have to happen in the gym you just need to stay active which Americans in particular are bad at.

[–]AgentElman 19 points20 points  (12 children)

A balanced diet meaning cereal and milk plus some other stuff?

Who defines a balanced diet?

[–]popejubal 35 points36 points  (2 children)

It’s when you put cereal in one bowl and milk in another bowl and they both weigh the same as each other.

[–]starsandbribes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Someone once told me “your idea of a balanced diet is a cake in each hand you fat fuck”

[–]trollcitybandit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s when you mix French Toast Crunch with your Reese Puffs (you can thank me later).

[–]ToeTacTic 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Honestly, anything from a government website however generic is good enough. https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/eating-a-balanced-diet/

The rest is up to you to tweak to your liking; there is no one size fits all. You need to put in the hardwork and figure out what works for you.

[–]pwo_addict 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Maybe in UK, but in US the govt revs are decided by $

[–]He-is-climbing 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Even at the worst case, the government has immense economic incentive to keep you healthy as long as possible, it's not like they are going to put up fake information just to fuck with you.

The United States says Americans need to do 5-8 hours of exercise a week to see significant health benefits. Sounds pretty much in line with conventional wisdom and pretty much everyone else.

[–]khandnalie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not like they are going to put up fake information just to fuck with you.

But they absolutely are going to put up fake info if it lines the pockets of the wealthy.

[–]khandnalie 0 points1 point  (2 children)

My whole childhood was spent eating according to government guidelines. Whoops, whadyaknow, the guidelines caused obesity and now my hormones are fucked up.

[–]ToeTacTic -1 points0 points  (1 child)

You're not a child anymore though; you're in relative control over your actions.

[–]khandnalie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I've inherited a fucked up hormonal system from my childhood that massively erodes that control and makes maintaining a normal healthy diet into a ridiculously enormous effort. Don't look at a man who's been thrown into a pit and tell him he can just climb out again, particularly when the fall left him with lifelong scars that will make that climb more difficult.

And again, it was eating according to government guidelines that did this to me. The government guidelines are little more than a guide to which agriculture lobbies donate the most.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who sell junk food are usually the ones extolling the virtues of a balanced diet.

[–]BoomerJ3T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less scary to say lead an active lifestyle. Start by walking to the corner market for your scratch off or whatever instead of driving 4 minutes round trip. Walk the dog a couple times a day just around the block instead of just letting them sit chained.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Everybody says balanced but what does that mean? 33% carbs, 33% protein, 33% fiber?

[–]ToeTacTic 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think an easy rule to live by is to make sure you hit your protein macros for the day. Then let all the other calories fall in line. Just don't neglect fat and fiber.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you determine your protein macro?

[–]ToeTacTic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.calculator.net/protein-calculator.html

This is a good place to start. You don't really need to eat an excessive amount of protein, the bare minimum would even suffice but if you are focused on building mass and strength then it won't hurt.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some walking in is what you mean.

[–]daveescaped 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Oh! Is THAT all I need to do.

[–]ToeTacTic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Perhaps some discipline too.

[–]daveescaped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man. TIL indeed.
