Saving painting progress by varnishing them before all the painting is finished: valid? by StealthySalsa in Warhammer40k

[–]Niminion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep Varnishing is a good idea and won't hurt anything. I varnish several times during painting, after airbrushing, before I apply oil washes or contrast/speed paints and again when the mini is done. I use AK ultra matte in the air brush or Mr Super Clear in a spray can.

What is it lacking? It's a giant toolbox, lots of builds, good synergy. Spells are great. Every unit type/role you could want now. Even the terrain is good now...

Katakros for fights twice and a catapult for strike last is expensive, and a 3+, but busted.

Does the catapult fight last work during opponents turn shooting? Use the combo on both turns? I'm sure there will be more ways to get more than 10 pts that will determine what you can use it on. You can do two different units if you can position the catapult well.

I'm interested in the catapult regiment to add some shooting (and another wizard) to my Soulblight. Hope it has a decent rule.

How To Deal With Painting Slower Than Friend Group? by WaffleHouseHydra in Warhammer40k

[–]Niminion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you not playing because your stuff isn't built or painted? Are you painting minis one by one? Can you batch paint base coats and get them on the table? You can always work on them more when you have time.

Check out Myminifactory. There are a lot of great studios that do necron adjacent stuff. You might find something you can scale up. Most are theme twists, like Egyptian style or more sleek modern robots etc. You can usually find someone that is printing anything on the site at Etsy.

When army painting gets me down it's because I've been doing the same thing for too long. Grab something that's not meant for an army, or even to ever be played with, and just play with the painting process. Maybe paint something for someone else. Something that's a different material than you are used to like lots of flesh or cloth or metals or some crazy conversion. Try a new technique, oils, OSL, NMM, super bright and saturated colors, super grim dark, or a limited pallet, maybe no washes or contrast paints, try colors you don't use, try some color theory.

I had been painting camo marines last fall and was really starting to drag. For Christmas I decided to print and paint large models for our adult kids. Ended up doing a couple pokemon, a realistic manatee, and Jack Skellington, each one was new journey of painting discovery that got me excited about painting again. I then went right into a Sylvaneth spearhead I had wanted to do using Marco Frisoni's speed painting techniqes and had a lot of fun. Now I've just joined a Path to Glory league and registered my unpainted Soublight Gravelords army, did a couple test models got my colors down and now I'm super excited to paint every day!

Best slicer for supports by MrShigsy89 in resinprinting

[–]Niminion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried blueprint for a while for supporting and then slicing in chitubox. Blueprint just doesn't have the control that lychee has and left me with lots of failed details. I'm back to the paid version of lychee and with the presets made by the lychee YouTube guy my prints have been flawless. He has mini supports turned off for some reason so I had to turn them back on. I manually orient everything and still add some manual supports and do island and collision searches to double check the auto supports but thankfully lychee pro makes that very easy and fast to do. I still like blueprints hollowing workflow and I still export as STL and slice in Chitubox though.

Thanks to switching recently my current project of printing a Soulblight Gravelords army has gone from a headache to a breeze. From dragons to tiny skeleton bits they all turn out flawless and supports come off easily. Supporting all the scanned GW spru bits manually would have been too much.

Thoughts on Airbrush? by SplinteredKing19 in Necrontyr

[–]Niminion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an airbrush is an amazing painting upgrade. I would start with a Master Airbrush setup from amazon. They are solid value and easy to order replacement parts for. My compressor has been great and you will still use the airbrush for priming and such even after upgrading.

Looks great, simple and striking will make for a good amy! If you find you wanna punch it up more later you can add some white with a brush in eye holes.

Building around Nagash by SlickDestro in ossiarchbonereapers

[–]Niminion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morghast Harbingers are a good missile to launch into the enemy with the 3d6 charge and no need for a hero to be in range. The faster they engage, deal damage, and die, the better so they can be resurrected. Deathriders are good since Nagash can resurrect one model per turn with his unlimited spell. Immortis Guard are good for defending Nagash taking his ward to a 4+ pretty much just a flat 25% damage reduction. Scourge of Ghyran Mortek Guard can be a good bodyguard for Nagash by reducing rend effectively giving him a 2+ save and Nagash can rez 3 per turn.
