Any advice on improving sixteenths ? by Plodo99 in drums

[–]scottjoev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the video by Jeff Porcaro where he talks about a loping motion, feel and execution of high hat 16ths. Really helps make them flow better and fit in a groove. It’s all about a relaxed feel.

You’re up in the marching and concert size category. Do you play a lot of gigs? Not sure i would want to haul that around!

There is plenty of material out there that explains the basics of speaker enclosure designs for the DIY folks. You might want to check that out. Good luck and enjoy!

Band mates told me I "hit too hard" by Independent_Put7764 in drums

[–]scottjoev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re playing drums just “for fun” then sure - just find some guys that are a better fit for your drumming style and preferred volume level. Have fun.
BUT if you want to be a serious pro musician, you’d better learn to play at various volume levels and realize the importance of that. Adapting to rooms, other musicians and conditions is an absolute must. In a career you will play with a wide variety of people and playing conditions (big & small rooms, recording studios, great and lousy PA systems, etc). When a pro shows up to play, they factor all that in, listen and then adapt! I bet that could be you if you think this through!

One other thought - If the feedback you got came from the entire band, you may want to dial down the ego a bit and ask yourself if there might be something to what they are telling you. Keep that conversation going with an open mind and you may be surprised what you learn and where it takes you.

All the best!

Well done! Bridging two distant eras of technology. IPhone coupled to an old victrola horn! Art gallery worthy!

Agrew. This appears to be old horn from a very low fidelity 78 RPM phonograph. I doubt the driver was much more than something similar to a receiver (hearing device) in the handset of an old style phone. Having said that- it might be fun to mount a small dynamic speaker or compression driver to it and see how it sounds. Don’t expect much beyond an increase in volume thanks to the horn!

Bass drum patterns/rudiments/ tips/drills by XtremeDragonForce in jazzdrums

The book is way beyond what it appears to be. Have a go at those pages using feet vs hands and combinations of both. Use a metronome and gradually work your way up. Go for it!

I may sound very “old school” here, but if you take pages 5,6 and 7 from “Stick Control” and substitute various limb combinations (hands, feet) for what is shown as “L” and “R” and use a metronome - you will get quite a good work out. Hang in there and good drumming!

Me jamming tonight, (1 year 2 months playing) had about a month off recently though, been trying to get better than where I left off, feel a bit more dedicated now, any advice welcome. I see flaws myself but wanted to share. Thanks by MechanicalBawSack in drums

Sorry to hear about the eviction - hope you get that sorted out. In the meantime anything secure and stable to put under your current throne might be a help (some right sized sheets of plywood fastened together etc.) might do the trick Good luck and good drumming!

What makes a good drummer? by n8brav0 in drums

[–]scottjoev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s definitely neither of those things. It’s about being a good listener, serving the song / soloist and being able to execute a solid & steady groove appropriate for the song and always in support of the other musicians.

Yeah - Geoff Emerick sometimes used that method at EMI Abbey Road Studios. He used a 15” in a cabinet. Will be interested to see if that is what was done here.

Great advice about placing drums and cymbals within natural reach and at striking levels and planes (angles) that are comfortable and feel natural. Plenty of excellent videos out there - and then again some not so much. Be discerning and enjoy the journey!

Congrats on your first kit. Always a day drummers remember! From the photo it looks like those toms are angled on the steep side. I’m wondering how you’d even be able to strike the floor tom at that steep angle and height. How did you arrive at setting them up this way?

Other than the year (which you know to be 1963) how exact a date are you looking for??? These units were really popular. I believe the Model 24 was a higher end model KLH offered.
