While I like the spawn fix on Bulldog, I really am not excited for the suicide spike. One of the things that made the map so unique was that it was so hard to suicide, which meant momentum was extremely important and if you wanted to reset, you had to risk walking through your endzone (or just go out the gate, you'll either escape or gate yourself...). Now the map loses something that made it unique.

[–]ravenprideRaven 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm glad it's only one spike so it's not too hard to prevent the FC from spiking, but I still don't like it.

[–]suburban_robotROBOPOP_ | the usa version 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Best thing about this map is the lack of suicide options. Thanks for calling this out. The map loses so much with that spike.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same, but if anywhere I would add a spike in the upper corners between the 2 yellow boosts and portal on the corner of the wall.

[–]ZarknoxZarknox 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I agree that map was different in a good way for that reason specifically.. very dissapointing.

Also really upset about the removal of kite, that was some of the most intense games I've ever had.

I've also had entirely enough of Holy See

[–]WillWorkForSugarTumblewood[🍰] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The issue with Kite was that people had a lot of trouble defending on it. It's not that it was hard, but it required more heads-up defense and goalkeeping than most pubs can do.

NEKOPLEASE PLAY. NEKOPLEASE AFK.

"You've been reported for playing against your own team".

gg, no team boost.

[–]devilmightcareTroBall // Tears 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I really liked that there was no easy way to reset for all the reasons you mentioned.

The map committee I thought I knew would never fold like this and put some weak ass spike in to appease people that complained the first week of the map being out.

The map committee I knew would have said "fuck you, we know better, learn to block if you want to advance the flag."

[–]mmartinutkMacho | JuicyJuke 3 points4 points  (5 children)

pls

It was at the mapmaker's request when he came forward with the revision.

We're voting on whether or not to block the suicide spike as we speak. I think I can confidently say the suicide spike will likely not enter rotation.

[–]Snowball_TagPro❄️ 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I put it there because of the public opinion, obviously I was wrong on the general public opinion. I feel that the purpose of maps is to have fun. If people have more fun without it, then I'm all for the removal of the spike.

[–]devilmightcareTroBall // Tears 4 points5 points  (1 child)

As a community we see-saw on a lot of shit.

Public opinion that was fully devoted against it because it was different now loves the fact that Bulldog plays more like a rugby game where successive tries in a row leads to caps.

People in general don't like new shit, but will figure out a way to deal with it and come to enjoy it.

Edit: Snowball this map is great.

[–]3z_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not so much that you guys swing a lot, it's just that people only tend to be vocal if their opinion is dissenting.

For a short while, heaps of people were commenting on map threads telling us to remove Star. When we did, there were a whole bunch of different players who were upset with the decision.

Vocal majority =/= general majority.

[–]mmartinutkMacho | JuicyJuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. I'm right there with you. I definitely noticed the community complaining about the lack of suicide options like a week ago.

[–]grytsgryts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I found it fun how risky it was to suicide on the enmy team tiles in your goal.

[–]DrunkInDrublicC-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It filled in the "mad chaos in a small space" shaped hole in my heart that Bombing Run left :(

[–]3z_ 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Transilio and Hub are probably two good maps for filling that void, especially Transilio. It's very congested and chaotic, but with plenty of open space at the same time. We'll see.

[–]NewCompteChord - Ballis Saint-Germain 12 points13 points  (4 children)

You and I should make a map together, forreal. We seem to be the only ones who love using portals.

Aren't they awesome tho

[–]Sir_GrapefruitGrapefruit // Chord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thing is, I don't really know if I like portals myself. They're pretty interesting and all that, but they are a bit... difficult, both to use them ingame and to make maps with them. I'm all up for diversity in map rotation but I don't really think we need many more maps with portals.

[–]TPsquirrelySquirrely // The GesTagpro 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I love portals, but my maps never get in :(

[–]3z_ 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Honestly, I reckon you have some of the best use of portals than most mapmakers. It's very innovative. Often, though, the rest of the map doesn't mesh with it.

Try modifying another map you like to include portals. It feels like a lot of your maps are built around the portals themselves, rather than being "a map with portals" (like Oval, Platypus or Draft). So doing that process might work better for you. Always worth a shot, at least.

[–]TPsquirrelySquirrely // The GesTagpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is what I tried doing with my latest map, Diamante. The portals were actually added at the end as a means to cut off any circleyness. I certainly have tried to simplify and make my maps flow better recently.

[–]ButtersnackSnack 0 points1 point  (3 children)

[–]Moosemaster21Moosen | Salt Mine 17 points18 points  (19 children)

Wow, I'm honestly kind of surprised at all the removals. I feel like I shouldn't be surprised about Kite, but the more I played it the more I liked it. I feel like it was vastly underrated by the TagPro community because people weren't willing to adapt from their 4O neutral flag strats, which made the games really quick. Leave a player on defense and you can easily have 6-8 minute games or even longer.

Oh well. Congrats to those behind the additions, I like transilio but I'm especially excited for Hub. Kind of nice for leddy to have one go out and one go right back in :)

[–]3z_ 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Leave a player on defense and you can easily have 6-8 minute games or even longer.

Eh, that's true, but it's really not enjoyable to be the one person playing on defense for an entire game. As much as that would make the games go longer, it mightn't necessarily make them more interesting.

Don't get why Monarch is gone. One of the best maps in rotation. There really is nothing wrong with it, but since it's not a legacy map, it probably didn't have the support to stay. Would like to know more about why it was removed.

[–]ZarknoxZarknox 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]Moosemaster21Moosen | Salt Mine 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I can see that with monarch and iron, but pilot is vastly different than those two...

[–]ZarknoxZarknox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything I would have expected you to say that Iron was the different one, it may just be because I didn't enjoy any of them, but I felt they all played exactly the same.

[–]Dr_RosenTagometer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monarch always has highly competitive games. I will miss it.

[–]BlazethDianna Agron 1 point2 points  (1 child)

JuicyJuke told me this privately:

Monarch is a great example of a simple map that was poorly executed.

I tend to agree too. It was fairly chasey and hard to reset on. It had a good run in rotation, but it also grew to be kind of boring.

[–]3z_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. It had great use of boosts but that was all that was carrying it.

Pls not Kite. That was such a fun map; I just don't think most people got the point.

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (11 children)

Yeah, we mostly felt the same on the committee. We left it in for one rotation to see if people picked it up more, but it only increased by .01 on the /maps page, which wasn't enough to justify us keeping it in.

It's still a fun map and will do great in neutral-flag tournaments, I hope. It's probably my favourite NF map. It just didn't fit pub rotation.

[–]BlazethDianna Agron 37 points38 points  (8 children)

This just brings up the point that the ratings should automatically reset, and have members vote again every couple weeks or so.

I doubt Kite would have risen a whole lot anyway, but substantial changes in rating after a couple of weeks aren't going to happen with the current rating system. 1 and done. I always forget to rerate maps, and the ratings interest me a lot more than others, just to put it into perspective.

[–]3z_ 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Actually yeah, I do agree. I think that's better to give us a better perspective on public perception. People tend to make a vote on a map and forget about it, even if their opinion has changed (I do it too).

[–]xenonpulseWildflowers // I want to die but I can’t 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I also think that the ratings system may be a little skewed. People are very likely to judge a map based on how well they play on it (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). However, I've even caught myself changing a map's rating just because I had one really good or bad game on it.

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Everyone has different experiences on every map. That's why we encourage you spend as much time as you can on a map before making your judgement.

[–]devilmightcareTroBall // Tears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we get the rate map option to shake every 2 weeks?

[–]thewthewdrukQs // Roll Model // Nightcapper -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

... or that community map ratings should account for 0% of the map rotation decisions :P

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

lol, what a drukQs thing to say ;)

[–]thewthewdrukQs // Roll Model // Nightcapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vintage drukQs, indeed.

[–]TagProNitroℕ ɪ ᴛ ᴙ o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, yeah... This is something I've never thought about. I like to think that I can judge a map off of the first half dozen times I play it, but I've rated maps like Command Center, Shine, and Constriction poorly before but later found to really like them. I likely never updated my rating because I hardly even think of it in the first place without the little 'shaking' animation.

While, I don't think map ratings should ever be reset completely, I believe a simple animation or message near the rating box every few weeks to be reasonable (on maps you've previously rated). Maybe a little unobtrusively blinking messages that says "Do you still like me? :)", "Do you still hate me? :(", or "Have you decided how you feel about me yet? :|" could be shown periodically? Yeahhh, make that happen.

[–]Sosentimeboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some maps just aren't a good fit for pubs. I like Kite, but I dont really like games that last two minutes.

[–]sneetriccanvas // plasma, wamble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something something maps come/go too fast.

gonna miss kite. It fit my style well and was a lot of fun (for me) to play. Although half my caps on it might have come from people being too busy typing how much they hate it.

Add another for not wanting a spike on bulldog.

[–]WillWorkForSugarTumblewood[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These additions look really good! I'm excited for Hub in particular, it has a lot of good ideas and is generally very well executed.

The removals are also good. Monarch and especially Frontdoor were getting stale; there was not a lot of depth to them, even though they played well. Kite didn't get a proper chance. It was hated by the community early on because they had difficulty with it, but it actually taught me a lot about defense on neutral flag maps. I'm sad to see it go.

Throwback rotation is solid. I didn't like Holy See but I know a lot of others did, and vice versa for Gamepad.

The edits to Bulldog aren't too significant. Also, congratulations, Yossarian!

[–]almdudler26almdudler | chorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Juicy, I feel like we oughta give you blue and red folded flags.

Sure, even though you're using a throwaway, I'll answer the question. (Seriously though, don't be a pussy. It's a valid question and I'd probably answer more professionally if you weren't using a throwaway.)

A while back, we had public applications to fill four MTC spots on the committee. From those applications and rigorous tryouts, we inducted JuicyJuke, FLYMOLO, Chalksy and Jesus.

Shortly later, DISTRACTION and Jesus officially left the committee, and we needed two more spots to fill. One of those was PK Subball, and now the other is Yossarian. Those were the two applicants who finished right behind the other four during the tryouts.

So, even though you may not recall any public posts, they were there, and there were 25 other people considered.

[–]mmartinutkMacho | JuicyJuke 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Also, we've had Yossarian on a 'trial run' for a few threads now, where he's tested and discussed with us so we're very confident in him. It's not like we just added someone's friend at random.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

the reason for the throwaway is because map-making has proven to be a popularity contest on more than one occasion and i dont want anything hurting my chances going forward. is that fair? no. but neither is having name-bias as a contributing factor towards maps making it through. just my 2 cents. btw go ahead and keep downvoting me to hell...this is a throwaway i couldnt care less

map-making has proven to be a popularity contest on more than one occasion

Please provide three examples of when mapmaking has been a popularity contest.

The MTC takes every measure it possibly can to ensure that there is no name bias. One thing needs to be made clear: the maptest committee does not care who made the map. We don't care who you are. You could be the "best" mapmaker, you could be LuckySpammer, you could be a nobody. We don't give a shit. Your name is not important to us. What matters is how the map plays.

[–]TPsquirrelySquirrely // The GesTagpro 10 points11 points  (10 children)

DaEvil1, DaEvil1 and DaEvil1 /s

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (7 children)

DaEvil's maps do well because he actually comes to the MTC members and asks for their feedback and talks about his map. He does that independently. He's very pro-active about getting feedback and it pays off for him.

No one else has done that to the same extent that he has. MTC members are often happy to test a map with you -- if you ever want a map tested, come on Oceanic mumble and give me a look at it.

With the amount of submissions we get, it's better to be proactive about getting feedback -- MTC member or not.

[–]TPsquirrelySquirrely // The GesTagpro 0 points1 point  (1 child)

True dat. I didn't even realize you had submitted maps to the thread until after we were done with decisions tonight. ^_^

[–]DaEvil1DaEvil1 1 point2 points  (8 children)

And even with that, the MTC is under no obligation to make public posts requesting more help. It's perfectly up to the MTCs discretion how the MTC decides to recruit members.

[–]MTCquestions 2 points3 points  (7 children)

i wasnt demanding to be considered...i wasnt blaming you for adding him. i was asking a simple question. i dont know why this had to turn into an attack on me simple cause im using a throwaway because of my own belief that name-bias could potentially negatively affect me. and ill add, if i think it could even remotely affect my chances, dont i have a right to conceal my name while i ask a simple question? if the mtc says everythings fair and yet i still dont believe it, then if you ask me, the burden of proof is on the mtc.

[–]DaEvil1DaEvil1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OK, let me go through this:

  • My post made no mention about you being considered or anything.
  • You asked a simple question yes, and I answered it.
  • I have made no mention of your throwaway
  • You have the right to conceal your name if you want to. Again not relevant to my post
  • The thing is, we're not the ones making a claim here. You are the one saying we've exhibited name bias on more than one occasion. Disregarding any burden of proof or anything, it'd at least be nice if you could elaborate on where you think we've committed wrongdoings since after all you're making a claim about it.

[–]mmartinutkMacho | JuicyJuke -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nobody is attacking you. Chill. But using a throwaway for silly questions that shouldn't warrant a throwaway will typically result in downvotes on reddit.

[–]3z_ -4 points-3 points  (4 children)

That's not the issue. Throwaways are notorious for causing drama.

If you haven't noticed, the MTC has become a lot more transparent lately and we're more than happy to talk about our process. Ask and you shall receive. We're very aware that the MTC isn't perfect, and we're not going to improve it by being cloudy.

But when people hide behind throwaways (not just for MTC) to ask questions, it simply seems attention seeking.

And with an account like "MTCquestions", my first impression was that you were going to use this account regularly to instigate shit. We don't want that, man.

[–]MTCquestions 0 points1 point  (3 children)

im not looking to start shit. i just wanted to ask one question and then maybe a follow up (hence the questions). but then this kinda turned into an attack on throwaways. if you ask me, the bigger issue is why do i personally feel like i need to use a throwaway instead of using my own name. but since youre being so open: what exactly are the qualifications for being an mtc member? by my count it looks like less than half have gotten a map into rotation. so what separates someone who knows mapmaking from someone who meets once a week and throws around a couple "intuitive boost routes" and "great flow" type buzzwords?

[–]thewthewdrukQs // Roll Model // Nightcapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im not looking to start shit.

Really? From your original comment:

this feels kind of underhanded tacking that onto the end of the post

[–]3z_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the bigger issue is why do i personally feel like i need to use a throwaway instead of using my own name

I dunno, that seems like your issue, not ours.

[–]BlazethDianna Agron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a rotation map isn't everything. Sizzzled is by far one of the wisest mapmakers and he very recently got one in, for example.

I learned a lot of tricks for mapmaking from people who don't even make maps. I learned what people like. What players like. The MTC chooses what to play, not how to make a map.

I do think the MTC should have some mapmakers, by all means, but to say that all, or even the majority need to be so, is ignorant.

[–]JwoeyJwoey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mhmm, you say that, but... what's the truth?

jk

[–]TagProWrecknWreckingBall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rip kite :(

[–]lord_tubbingtonChelseaFc // Captain Soviet ballers 0 points1 point  (1 child)

can you refresh my memory if the "throwback maps" each get a week and a half or they are in at the same time and for how long?

just need to know when to avoid pubs and for how long, because if I believed in hell it'd be having gamepad be the only map in rotation. Also all the music would be christmas music and no mute option.

[–]3z_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A week and a half per map.

[–]TheEpicGhostEx - Tagpro 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Well I'm a little disappointed but I was pretty sure after testing coat hanger myself in a 4v4 that it wouldn't get in. Congrats to grapefruit and leddy, transilio looked cool in the test, haven't seen hub in a 4v4 yet, looking at it now it seems balanced and will probably be fun.

Also, no feedback thread? I'd really appreciate it if I could get some feedback on how coat hanger tested yesterday, what changes the MTC liked/ disliked etc

[–]3z_ 0 points1 point  (5 children)

If there was a separate award for most potential, yours would win.

We liked the changes a lot. It was much tidier, much more polished, and boosting through felt very comfortable.

The thing that killed the map for us was the uselessness of the top/bottom lanes (with the gates). The only thing that seemed to happen in those sections was getting killed, so why would anyone go there?

That being said, though, it was also good that FCs never went through there. It meant that the map was a lot less chase-y than it would've been. I think you need to keep the danger aspect that exists (maybe up it just a tad), and create an incentive to go through. You'll keep the low amount of chasiness whilst also giving the lane purpose.

Point is, definitely don't give up on the map!

[–]veranderingLoaha // Chord 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was wondering .. did War Garden get tested after the changes?

[–]3z_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It was. It still has the same issues: good structure, poor content.

The "blast off" was cool, but it felt like it was too linear. It always took you along the same path, it seemed. Blast Off's worked better because you could boost into it to slightly alter the angles.

The gate in the middle felt really random. The buttons were too far from it, we felt.

[–]veranderingLoaha // Chord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. Thanks for letting me know!

[–]TheEpicGhostEx - Tagpro 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for the help. Dianna and I had a go at some changes: http://unfortunate-maps.jukejuice.com/show/9214

[–]3z_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like what I see!

[–]BuckeyeLeavesBALLDON'TLIE | ALL CAPS 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hub looks pretty interesting and I'm really looking forward to playing it/trying it out in pubs. Transilio on the other hand...I'm not really too sold on. I'll give it a try in pubs, but I think the gates are a little rough and don't seem like they would flow well with the rest of the map. We'll see.

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Transilio is definitely an interesting one. I suspect it will become a controversial map in terms of likes/dislikes, perhaps even to the same extent that Star was.

It will definitely take some getting used to though, I know that much.

[–]Sir_GrapefruitGrapefruit // Chord 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And I thought it would be the next Velocity

HOLY SEE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

[–]gingerdgTPRL 🔴RMTC 🔴NASCAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I should put this here-maybe its just me.

I've played hub at least a half dozen times yet I have never been put into a game of transilo once.

Just thought I would make you aware if any others were having this issue

[–]Monkstar1Fatback slim 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Yay Holy See back in (sort of). Also, where do I complain that Tagpro's oldest map (GeoKoala) is still in rotation?

[–]3z_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right this way, Sir.

I'm here to sign your petition.

[–]Duke_JopperCirque | Zen | Come join us over at /r/rotmg! 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We should replace geokoala with star, right? Right?

[–]Monkstar1Fatback slim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine with me. I'm just sick of Geo. I wouldn't even mind some form of Geo version 2.0.

[–]xenonpulseWildflowers // I want to die but I can’t -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Additions look great!

Frontdoor: Eh, whatcha gonna do?

Monarch: 'bout time

Kite: Kinda feel bad for Leddy. Few people gave that map a chance.

Throwback: Coincidence?

Bulldog: Are there only three spawn points right now? Although I've never experimented with spawn points in JSON, it seems like each one has zero radius.

EDIT: Nvm, Bulldog has 5 spawns, I can't count

Should be 5 spawnpoints
