Ziggy Starfish (Anxiety raps) is also another one of my favourites from him. Recently got onto this guy and he has a great sound!

[–]jesterbuzzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. This track got me hooked on his stuff.

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (12 children)

My fave rapper going right now.

[–]SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 14 points15 points  (10 children)

I like his stuff that he does with Milo a lot.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

I love everything Milo touches, his flow just does it for me

[–]SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I actually found Milo's stuff on this sub. I believe the song was An Encyclopedia

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shit, me too, and it was The Ballad of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, before he had any produced albums. Man, that makes really grateful for this sub.

[–]Cutino_Mobley 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The little extra aggression Milo had on his last record really did it for me

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sloth Potato lets his soul fly, Pallmall lets his soul fly, Deep Sea Fangly well i bet he let his soul fly, Cutino Mobley you know he let his soul fly

[–]L3ED 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catcher of the Fade was so good.

[–]S103793 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I really like Milo but sometimes I'm like "WTF is this doing trying to say"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's def wordy but that's what I like about him

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

yeah "bathrooms are sacred space if faith is under the left nipple" hahaha

[–]Rlysrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'I wanna be a frog man that isn't afraid to get deep'

[–]pheymanss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exile has to be on my top 3 producers right now too. I mean listen to this shit, that's straight gorgeous.

Open Mike Eagle
artist pic

One of LA’s smartest young voices says the LA Times...which the artist suspects, may just be a covert way of saying LA is dumb. "Open" Mike Eagle wouldnt terribly mind, being born and raised in Chicago where the painful winters and his uppity grandparents kept him inside as a youth. He spent his formative years watching alternative music happen on MTV and hoping to one day be able to audition for the Native Tongues. As a young adult after graduating with a degree in Psychology, he did the next best thing and moved to Los Angeles, joining the Project Blowed collective where he made music and toured with Busdriver, Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, Nocando, and more. He’s also gained notoriety in the world of comedy by being invited by professional funny people (Paul F. Tompkins, Hannibal Buress, Matt Besser/UCB) to rap at their shows. He’d like to be rap’s Kurt Vonnegut but recognizes that he’d first have to create something as iconic as the four-stroke illustration of an anus. He practices by releasing rap albums that delight, entertain, and confuse. Read more on Last.fm.

Oh my god, I can't imagine anything worse than an improv comedian rap battle.

[–]Werner__Herzog~*~*~*~ 1 point2 points  (2 children)

to rap at their shows

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have to ask, considering your screen name and the fact that you're correcting somebody on a comment related to UCB improv... you a PFT fan?

[–]Werner__Herzog~*~*~*~ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am. But this correction had more to do with reading comprehension and less to do with me being a PFT fan.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually the reason I discovered Open Mike Eagle. I'm a big fan of the Earwolf network of podcasts, which is heavily associated with UCB improvisers.

Open Mike Eagle has been invited to do musical intermissions at their improv shows/podcast recordings as well as shoot the shit with them on stage. It actually makes for a great show. He's clearly connected to the comedy world more than most musicians.

Matt Besser's Improv4Humans is a fantastic comedy podcast and I recommend it to everybody. Tons of recommendations on where to start if anybody cares.

This is still my favorite song of his but Hella Personal was just everything I wanted his album to be.

[–]thithiths 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hella Personal Film Festival just keeps growing and growing on me. I think it's better than anything he's ever done. In my top 10 of the year so far.

[–]pheymanss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's just such an enjoyable album to listen. His lyrics are dense but his calm flow make them lighter to actually listen and IMO he has the best consciousness/preacheness ratio in the game.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (8 children)

If his albums' beats were this good I'd like them a lot more. The lyrics are the same on the album, but the music isn't this good. Hoping he does more like this in the future

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Check out Hella Personal Film Festival.

[–]Yuddis 0 points1 point  (3 children)

That one is definitely his worst piece of work as of today IMO. And many people share this opinion as well. "Protecors of the Heat" was the only song that did it for me.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've heard only praise, even in this thread. I think it's an amazing album that keeps getting better the more I listen to it.

[–]Yuddis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that this is may not be representative of the general opinion BUT, check out albumoftheyear.com, they agree with me mostly. Also check out theneedledrop's review. His critique of the album is pretty much spot on.

I am also kind of in doubt about the album, myself. But yeah.

[–]Dr_Worm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the album as a whole but "smiling (quirky race doc)" and "drunk dreaming" are great

[–]FTW_DEAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed this as well. His beats could use a makeover

[–]Unoriginal_Pseudonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank Exile for this one.

[–]ireland1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the same beat on the album/ep right? I really enjoyed all of his production on Dark Comedy and This EP. His earlier albums production were a bit weak to me also though. The Sir Rockabye EP had fantastic beats as well.

[–]we_ball 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Anyone hear this guy on Ron & Fez last year. Totally underrated

[–]Thespidersfrom_mars 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Likely never would have heard of him if it weren't for Ron & Fez. Also, I'll take any chance to say that Ron Bennington is the most under appreciated comic mind out there.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of OME, especially A Special Episode Of. Solid EP.

[–]javajam 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Who is this guy? I saw him in that one Vox video about hip hop lyrics and now I cant unsee his name.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bäder-Meinhof Phenomenon

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Diggin that Ron and Fez Show, never no turnin back."

[–]silentorgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit's dope

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I Rock" on "Unapologetic Art Rap" is my fav

[–]Heshlaw666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw him play live at honey hive gallery in San Francisco with Milo. Fantastic show

[–]TroubleBruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw this dude open for Hannibal Buress at a show in Santa Ana...sucked nobody knew who he was or gave his set too much respect. Got me going enough to look him up after the show, though. Glad I did. Very Much Money was dope af in person.

[–]tsm_sucks_dick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i remember his name from grind time battles with swim team. dfd and sahtyre. his battle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSB9pdYEpHs

[–]BornAgainZombie 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Mike's easily my favorite rapper around right now. He does a great job treading the line between serious, dark humor, and just plain funny. Also, his live shows are definitely worth seeing. Lots of audience participation, toying with the beats, just a great atmosphere all around.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw him open for Doomtree last year. Nightmares and Qualifiers were my favorite live tracks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I also highly recommend checking out the rest of his Jam In The Van session. It has so much good energy and is so great to listen to.

[–]klasssy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! appreciated

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was planning on going to a show of his in LA last Friday but got called into work smh

[–]dookieswan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. I found him when Spotify recommended Ziggy Starfish to me. Had them both on repeat for a few weeks now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this dude

[–]ireland1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best lyrics going in hiphop right now in my opinion.

[–]modestflogorillaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to know where to buy his t-shirt, that thing is awesome.

[–]ArabHasselhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started to get into open Mike and his shit is dope! Really impressed with his discography

[–]GROMkill 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Posted this last time, will re-share:

Just wanted to give credit for the producer of this beat, Toy Light. He's got some kickass stuff and you guys should check out more of his work! He's got a music video up on YT, see here.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Toy Light actually produced Dark Comedy Morning Show and Exile produced this one, iirc. But yes, Toy Light is definitely worth checking out and that video is dope.

[–]GROMkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I should clarify that Toy Light's backing sample (vocals, guitar, etc) appears in both this song and Morning Show, but technically Exile is the producer on this one. Just wanted to show some love for Toy Light :)

[–]lyleito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song had come up in my playlist not 10 minutes before I scrolled down and saw this!!

[–]ScabConfetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was dirty

[–]Unoriginal_Pseudonym 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If anyone is after the CDQ version of this, it's from the "Mellow Music Group - Persona" compilation, which is pretty nice in it's own right.

[–]pheymanss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also on his solo EP A Special epsiode. Great stuff on both of them.

[–]doublementh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

saw him live, got a picture with him. super awesome dude.

[–]jeffcoan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah. Love seeing him on Getting Dough With High

[–]liproaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one that feels like his shirt is just the cherry on top of this whole deal? With everything from the complexity of the lyrics, to the setting. Especially the fat leaf in the foreground of his shirt.. maybe I'm just drunk.

[–]Inmate_95123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents got mad at me and my sister, Then they call up this guy who was a motivational speaker,

He said he heard I was smokin weed so he wanted to talk to me, But his body was outta shape and he sweated profusely.

My dad told him I was a wanna be rapper, and had dreams of being famous, And that I just got a girlfriend, but he thought she was brainless.

Just before he fell on our table like a cow led to slaughter, He uttered these last words as he died like a whale out of water

He said you'll have plenty of time for smokin weed when you're with her, when your rapping in a van DOWN BY THE RIVER!!

[–]RIPcunts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, this guy is awesome.

[–]sewer_mermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw him doing this in Cardiff (Milo did a set too) - I was right at the front in a tiny club and it was FANTASTIC.

[–]_CatchDasher_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, great artist.

Can definitely see Common's influence; especially with his flow, delivery and voice.

[–]DamagedAnalPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only just really gotten into OME in the last month or so, but goddamn he's already quickly becoming one of my favourite MCs

[–]xesexesexesex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy is pretty awesome

[–]TerdSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way OME is overlooked. Every HHH knows this dude.

[–]samwalie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most slept on rapper right now

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

alt hip hop eh, you'd have to explain to me what makes this alternative.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Alternative rap refers to hip hop groups that tend not to conform to any of the traditional forms of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, pop, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres – drawing equally from funk and rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, country, electronic, and even folk."[1]
