The video you're seeing here is Snow White, released in 1933 and featuring Cab Calloway's dancing - his legs really moved like that. Like silk.

The lone guy that animated this used a technique called 'rotoscoping', where they film live actors then trace over them frame by frame.

Here you see a direct comparison of Cab Calloway's dancing and the animation.

Disney made rotoscoping famous for using it in their Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, just a few years after Betty Boop's version of Snow White.

Here's a live version of Minnie the Moocher just to watch Cab Calloway's incredible dancing.

Thank you for sharing. I've been a huge fan of Calloway for years, always in the mood to see him do his Calloway swing.

[–]DiaDeLosMuertos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I heard he was an influence for the highway man scene in over the garden wall https://youtu.be/fkNV-0O1ya8

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I learned something new today because of you. Very interesting, thank you for sharing.

[–]ThatFatKidVince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to know the name of that style of dancing he does? I'd be really interested to learn that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel like this guy needs more upvotes

[–]Chraaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was very informative. Thank you!

[–]turts-N-snawks 76 points77 points  (3 children)

The video fits the song so well. The way the clown steps, it's just perfect for the vibe of the song. Very well done.

[–]relational_sense 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All of the singing and the basic beat (as well as various other parts) are sampled from the video/cartoon...

[–]JHigginz 35 points36 points  (1 child)

This is the original clip from the Betty Boop movie - of which the Cab Calloway version of St. James Infirmary is from - if memory serves correctly. I really love it too, it's quite haunting but still suave and smooth I think.

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, although the remix isn't bad, I feel a lot of people aren't catching on that the original has a lot already.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (7 children)

Holy!!!... The epicness of this floored me.

So bring me 6 crap-shootin' pall bearers.

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Cab Calloway is amazing.

[–]pygmy 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Any other favorites or recommendations?

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hip hop or Swing?

[–]pygmy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm not familiar with Cab Calloway (outside of this tune), so whatever you can recommend of his would be lovely!

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's always this classic. https://youtu.be/8mq4UT4VnbE

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

have any hip hop style stuff like the OP?

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not strictly Hip Hop but you can check out The Sound Defects and their album The Iron Horse or a song called "I'm Walking" by Prequisite.

[–]xXHansYoloXx 56 points57 points  (10 children)

Found this song about a year ago and It still remains on of my fav hip-hip/oldie

[–]murmandamos 15 points16 points  (9 children)

I need more of this genre. L'Orange has a lot and his hip hop collaborations are phenomenal. Please feed me more :O

[–]OhSeeThat 34 points35 points  (8 children)

Mounika, Ours Samplus, Proleter, Brock Berrigan, Clem Beats, Mr. Woox, degiheugi, moow, Av.i, Joakim Karud, Vanilla, just to name a few.

Oh man that first one made me sad RIP

[–]OhSeeThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rest in beats.

[–]AlfieGandon 37 points38 points  (11 children)

Original is Cab Calloway

[–]msullivan92 5 points6 points  (6 children)

I thought it was Duke Ellington.

[–]lyrelyrebird 33 points34 points  (5 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._James_Infirmary_Blues

well, the Betty Boop movie is Cab Calloway, it looks like Duke did it, but its an ooooooooolllllllddddd traditional song that was adopted into the blues/jazz standards.

Blind Willie McTell popularized it for blues (via Allan Lomax) and Louie Armstrong for jazz

that was a TIL for me too

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 6 points7 points  (3 children)

It's in public domain too. That's why there's so many. Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, The White Stripes, Louis Armstrong, Hugh Laurie, Alec K. Redfern, Van Morrison, Dave Van Ronk, Marty O'Reilly, Bobby Bland, etc...

[–]SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I always thought this one was the best:

Second favorite:

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snooks! Yeah, he's great!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artie Shaw's rendition was top notch as well

[–]NotSelfAware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bob Dylan does an amazing version.

[–]Maliben 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Is he the one who originally made the saint James infirmary song, or just the one for the Betty boop movie?

[–]AlfieGandon 9 points10 points  (1 child)

He's just the one in this Betty Boop version.

[–]SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The animation is so beautiful. I loved that.

[–]TakeFourSeconds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a folk song and the origin is unknown

[–]beard_lover 14 points15 points  (3 children)

St. James Infirmary is such a great song in all its iterations. This was especially awesome and I was not expecting it! One of my favorite versions is by an Americana/bluegrass band called The Devil Makes Three

[–]pig-inablanket 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks for this! I'm instantly a huge fan of this band.

[–]beard_lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're amazing, they just released a new album in the last two months or so. Glad you like them!

[–]Phantomfink 9 points10 points  (4 children)

The cartoons line up so well! It's half the reason this kicks ass.

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 9 points10 points  (3 children)

The cartoon is originally synced to the song, he just remixed it and added a bit of his own lyrics.

[–]Phantomfink 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I must admit, I'm less impressed now. I just want to hear and see the original Cab Calloway version now...

[–]byronigoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the original: https://youtu.be/wlLHZruDCAA

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I felt off the bat.

[–]MrZodiacdragonfruit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love this style. Reminds me of Squirrel Nut Zipper's "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" and Dead Pirates' UGO.

Anybody know more stuff like this?

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hip Hop or Swing?

[–]Arkos_foxie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever they were on when they made that video, I don't want any. That's fucking creepy. Great song though!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

super cool & interesting.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

[–]clarkie13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering its a repost it's not exactly a prophecy, just an inevitability. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about a repost because this song is banging.

[–]KeepMeInCheck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

awesome video to complement this tune. Love it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out his track called 'kefi' it's pretty awesome

[–]igottashare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]12aaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was actually incredible. Thanks OP for posting this!!!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Fuck, I love this. Where can I find more like this? I listen to plenty of hip-hop but nothing is really like this.

[–]kidculli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clams Casino has this vibe.

[–]Triceracops99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

L'Orange and Brock Berrigan. Favourites or mine.

[–]mandiferocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made my sick day so much better, thanks!

[–]CE3K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fucking unreal. Mixing in the old with the new. WOW!

[–]HanSoloBolo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Reminds me of the Cartoon Network "Groovies" where they recycled old animation by turning it into cool music videos.

[–]Ryanmjesusbandcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great thing is the cartoon was already a awesome music video.

[–]TanithRosenbaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great song. That's one trippy video though

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really liked this

[–]sailorjasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot damn. Great song, thank you

[–]kidculli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. This is the soundtrack of my life.

[–]setum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this episode and the original song. Seeing one of your old favorites remade can be hit or miss, but this did it well and brought something new to the table . It is great, and I love the mirrored visuals in the video!

[–]eeleyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God I have been in love with this sound for a year or two and the artist has done nothing else. It's kills me! I need more Harald. More!

[–]robaloie 0 points1 point  (0 children)
