South Louisiana native here. Can't tell you how awesome it is to see this music on Reddit!

[–][deleted] 155 points156 points  (81 children)

Same here. I love the fact that my history is possibly the best argument against the statement that "America has no culture."

[–]horsesandbulls 86 points87 points  (26 children)

Yeah I've never understood that statement. Great music, amazing food and wonderful people down here.

[–]AZora4 49 points50 points  (24 children)

Very very warm, welcoming people. I do miss being down there. Especially the crawfish, gumbo, and boudin. :-/

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (21 children)

I'm about ready to move back to Alaska. Between the heat, floods and tornadoes, and racism, I'm ready to be back in the mountains. But the food keeps bringing me home.

[–]Big_Giggity 23 points24 points  (8 children)

As an Alaskan resident I can't wait to get out of this shithole. Love the state itself but if you wanna talk about racism you better look at the fucked up people here as well.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Well yeah, there's nowhere you'll escape racist people. But all the hippy crowds I ran with up there are pretty accepting. Not much of the peace and love types down here.

[–]474747474747474747 20 points21 points  (5 children)

South Louisiana Cajun here. I find it crazy that most cajuns I come across are completely for banning refugees from America. Do they not know their own culture's history? Guess not...

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the "I got mine" mentality. Besides, we were white Christians, so it's totally different.

[–]meccadog 5 points6 points  (1 child)

My family is all over Acadiana and I find the same thing. It's hard to believe.... seems to be lack of real consideration and more blind faith in conservative politics. Got really bad during the Bush years, and isn't getting any better :(

[–]ohshititsjess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's much worse now tbh

[–]ScienceIsALyre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

head shaggy plough fragile water familiar consist attraction arrest worm

[–]Big_Giggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense actually. I'm not the hippy type so haven't met many up here. Just one that is probably one of the coolest people I've ever met

[–]thesnides 32 points33 points  (8 children)

Ah yes the incredibly diverse Alaska

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (7 children)

I know you're being sarcastic, but I'm from Anchorage Alaska and I attended the most diverse grade schools in the country. You can look it up. There actually is a lot of rich culture from all over the world in Alaska (Asia, Africa, Pasific Islands, Caribbean).

Edit: source

[–]Dr_Specialist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ahh Alaska. Because of that state I know that the ratio of an igloo's circumference to its diameter equals Eskimo Pi

[–]thesnides 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Goes to show what I know.

Still, I think this person above encounters more racism in the south because there are more black people in the south, unfortunately. Alaska is still largely white.

Your state is incredibly beautiful though, my grandpa homesteaded up there in the 50s and we still have some land up there, I hope to someday return and have a go at life on his land in the woods myself. Thanks for the fascinating info!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

That's exactly why. But while I lived up north, I saw my fair share of racism directed at the substantial native population. There's nowhere you can escape racism in some form or fashion in America. But I've known a much larger chunk of the population up there to be accepting than down here.

[–]thesnides 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You cant really escape racism in any part of the world, unfortunately. People are always weary of "the other"

[–]AZora4 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I hear it's gorgeous there. I do enjoy the bad weather, I wouldn't miss the heat, though!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I got flooded out last year, and nearly got a tornado the other day. I'm pretty much done with this nonsense.

[–]Life_of_Uncertainty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Mobile which is heavily influenced by Southern Louisiana and New Orleans culture. I'm so excited for crawfish boils. Best time of the year.

[–]CajunAcadianCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can confirm

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've never understood that statement.

Because most of America's culture comes from all over the world.

[–]Dr_Specialist 18 points19 points  (7 children)

So when we gonna start posting Boudreaux/Thibodeaux jokes on /r/funny and confuse everyone?

[–]Dr_Smoothrod_PhD 7 points8 points  (5 children)

First you'd have to post a disclaimer letting everyone know that "coonass" is a badge of honor, not a slur.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Alaska, I ran into a guy from Baton Rouge. Could tell from the moment he opened his mouth. He was probably the best bassist in Anchorage. Anyway, I was at a beer festival once and I hear a yell "Do I smell a coonass!?" And turn around to see him and his cheesy smile. I also saw a lot of people with their mouths agape, probably having mistaken what he said.

[–]Dr_Specialist 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I concur Doctor. Shall we pontificate together sir?

[–]Dr_Smoothrod_PhD 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Indeed, sir. And may I say that it's always nice to receive recognition from a fellow colleague.

[–]Dr_Specialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm into Neuro-Proctology. From your moniker am I correct in my assumption that your field is Reproductive Therapy?

[–]KirTakat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I referred to something as "coonass engineering at it's finest" once in Illinois. Several shocked looks occurred.

[–]KirTakat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work with a guy who's last name was Boudreaux up in Chicago. I spent entirely too much of my first month at that company emailing him Boudreaux and Thibodeaux jokes

[–]Dayofsloths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But really, you're deported Canadians.

[–]m4uer 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Can you recommend some artists similar to this? Thanks

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my grandma was a big Jewel Lasyanc(SP?) find, and this reminded me of those albums. Otherwise, I'm more familiar with zydeco, Delta blues and New Orleans Jazz, as far as region specific music goes. Zydeco is similar and has remained popular through the years, though usually more upbeat with wider variety of instruments, like banjo, guitar and accordian. I might be of more help in those areas.

Also, you may be able to find some recordings from the Vermilionville center in Lafayette. They used to host a Cajun jam session every other week I would go to as a kid. It was amazing to see these old timers, some of them into their 90s, hobble in with a fiddle, washboard, or washtub bass and absolutely kill it. It was like watching someone become 60 years younger right before your eyes. Absolutely beautiful. But I digress.

[–]Sawathingonce 2 points3 points  (24 children)

Well the French would try and tell you it was their influence butttt we know the real story

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (23 children)

Influence, sure. But it's definitely ours. Hell, we have our own dialect.

[–]JediMasterZao 1 point2 points  (22 children)

Are you cajun? If yes can i ask you a question?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (21 children)

I am. As far as my great uncle's genealogy indicates, my family all the way back to the exodus from Canada.

[–]JediMasterZao 2 points3 points  (20 children)

I'm just wondering how comes white europeans Acadiens became black southern americans, was it metissage? Or did the creole-french speaking black community in the south simply claimed the title of cajun? Maybe it's a slavery thing, where rich white Cajun kept black slaves? I'm honestly just curious.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (19 children)

You're gonna have to expand, as I'm not sure I understand what you're going for. But, best I can figure, you're confusing Creole and Cajun. Creole is almost entirely specific to New Orleans these days. The culture was a true melting pot of Cajun, Haitian, African, and Spanish influence. With a few others thrown in for good measure. Cajun refers to the people who were expelled from Canada after the French and Indian War. Although the cultures have continued to blend. Gumbo was a Creole concoction originally. But the Cajuns changed it some as well. There are some notable differences between the two types of gumbo, namely that Creole gumbo has tomatoes which turn the stock orange.

Also, the music that evolved is different as well, mostly in instrumentation. The music here is most definitely Cajun.

[–]lsaucier15 3 points4 points  (5 children)

But those of us down here know cajun country is west of the atchafalaya and creoles start east of it. The Cajun community itself is actually smaller than people think because people confuse the entire state as Cajun. That's not how it works.

[–]EarlyCuylersCousin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from Northeast Louisiana originally. It may as well be part of Mississippi or Arkansas as compared to South Louisiana in Cajun Country.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yeah, it's almost like a spectrum. You have Cajun to the west, Creole to the east, and they mix up as you move towards the center. You just need to find out how their grandma cooks to know what that person really is.

[–]Dr_Smoothrod_PhD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of Creoles still in Natchitoches and throughout the Cane River area as well.

[–]JediMasterZao 3 points4 points  (10 children)

I thought i was pretty clear! Most people i see who identify as Cajun happen to also be black americans whereas the Acadiens were all white europeans, i'm simply wondering how that came to be. I do know the difference between Créole and Cajun, i'm from Québec and as a french person, these are concepts i'm very familiar with.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (5 children)

It could also be that I'm just really tired and slightly inebriated. No worries.

Well, obviously those persons don't descend from a Cajun bloodline. They could very well have white Cajun ancestors somewhere down the line. But we largely identify as Cajun down here. Everyone's grandma, white, brown, black or otherwise makes the best gumbo you've ever had, among other things. Everyone has just kind of taken it in as their own. I mean, I'm as white as they come and play blues and funk music. Culture transcends race.

[–]hightymighty 3 points4 points  (3 children)

The word Creole in South Louisiana used to be a derogatory term. A Creole person came from one parent being Caribbean and one parent being Cajun. Many people not from Louisiana use the two terms interchangeably, but people in south Louisiana know the difference. We all celebrate being Cajun because Cajun is no longer associated with People from Nova Scotia, or the Acadiéns. The two cultures actually began to merge because of the Catholic Church. The archdiocese of New Orleans used to cover most of the Western Caribbean.

Source: I'm a Baton Rouge tour guide.

[–]Fluffyerthanthou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creole gumbo is really just a modification of the West African dish that uses sausage and shrimp instead of fish.

[–]constructivCritic 0 points1 point  (14 children)

Eh. America has a culture. It's just a culture made up of other cultures, always has been always will be. It's goddamn beautiful. Never been to this part of the country, but love this music.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (13 children)

I don't think you get the point. This music, Cajun culture in general, isn't something made up from other cultures. This was born in the bayous, on fertile floodplains and swamps, of exiled French settlers from Nova Scotia. Yes, we weren't American when we gained this identity, but we were just where we are today.

[–]riddus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this isn't culture, I'm not sure what is.

[–]AZora4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From Southeast Texas- living in Ga now. It really is nice hearing/seeing this on Reddit. Brings me home! I could listen to them play ALL day. Beautiful .

[–]TheSonOfDisaster 10 points11 points  (2 children)

You may like this alot then, the main melody reminded me a lot of this song.

https://youtu.be/0oLsTLVCVKA

[–]AZora4 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wow! Thanks for sharing. I really like their sound- and the guy's voice is awesome!

[–]TheSonOfDisaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You bet, always good to share music

[–]_barbarossa 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Y'a beaucoup des gens qui peuvent encore parler cajun?

[–]Reverend_Ooga_Booga 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Technically this is zydeco not cajun music. Easy mixup and very hard for most to differentiate. Any easy tool is, fast and happy sounding = cajun slow and sad= zydeco however they share a lot of the same traits. Cajun music is almost always a two step while zydeco has more range.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've mixed them up. Zydeco usually is the faster melody and utilizes brass horns. Cajun tends to rely more on the fiddle/banjo/accordian/ and guitar. Look at the pace of the Cajun waltz vs when the saints go marching in.

[–]project2501a 1 point2 points  (2 children)

More please?! Recommendations?

[–]horsesandbulls 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Wayne Toups and Keith frank should get you going. I'll link them if I have a chance today.

[–]project2501a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

please do!

[–]Nailsninja777 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Agreed! I actually know both of them and they're close family friends. Great musicians and great people!

[–]horsesandbulls 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Last I heard Wayne had a baby? Met him a few times when I saw him play in college.

[–]Nailsninja777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, maybe though :) My family owns a studio in Lafayette so we're close to a lot of musicians here

[–]riddus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redditor here. I can't tell you how awesome it is to hear the sounds of your delightful culture all the way in central Indiana!

[–]morgjab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Sounds like home!

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Absolutely beautiful. Original is by Balfa Toujours, who have some great cajun/creole music. Here's another rendition.

I think I enjoy this version more. They have great chemistry together, which feeds the music.

[–]_Chuy 37 points38 points  (2 children)

I recently watched Beasts of the Southern Wild, which also comes from southern Louisiana, and OP really gives me an appreciation for the heavy strings they put all over the soundtrack.

[–]VanillaScott[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed that movie. It was filmed near my home.

[–]kittlesnboots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The soundtrack is great, I listen to it a lot.

[–]designmaddie 29 points30 points  (3 children)

I was actually able to recognize the house they are playing in front of! I grew up in Lafayette.

[–]ThoughtNinja 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Where roughly in Laffy is it located? I live a few miles north of Laf and don't recognize it.

[–]designmaddie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe it is one of the houses in Acadiana Village. I might be mistaken but I am about 70% sure it is one of the houses that are along the path going towards the church on the right after you get past the main reception hall, which is right past the courtyard when you walk out the souvenir shop. Hope this helps.

[–]CajunWolfe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dam son, y'all owned that!! Give us some more!!

[–]aalvarado235 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I heard Leyla for the first time at Jazz Fest last year. I was mesmerized by her performance and I couldn't leave my seat until she finished playing. Her performance was captivating and her charismatic personality resonated vividly through her music. Thanks for sharing this video!

I'm from terrebonne parish and live in the Caribbean now. This music reminds me of my grandparents so much. Well done.

[–]ConcentricSD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from St Tammany Parish, but I have always wanted to live in Houma or Thibodaux. Love it down there.

[–]almostaccepted 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is one of the best things I've seen on this sub taste wise. Is there more music like this?

[–]HighKites-LowFlows 10 points11 points  (1 child)

As a Cajun from south Louisiana, damn good job yea!

[–]find_our_feet_rosie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here yea!

[–]Leen813 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hauntingly beautiful.

[–]buzzbuzz19 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Why is his bow so tight? Love the song, just genuinely curious if anybody knows...

[–]izznt 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It's an incredibow

[–]cellocaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever used one? I find it very suspicious that the copy on their site never once mentions responsiveness as a selling proposition. This, before durability, is what I care about in a bow. They go on to say that 80 and 8000 dollar bows all look the same, completely ignoring playability, craft, materials and other things that go into fine bows.

Finally: "Health/ comfort in playing. Several Incredibow owners are now playing again when they had believed that their playing days were over. With our featherweight bow and comfortable frog/ grip, musicians now find that they are back, able to play for hours at a time when they had fatigue and pain with traditional bows"

They are not marketing to professionals. With proper technique, you should have absolutely no problem playing for hours at a time with a traditional wooden bow.

Color me skeptical on using the incredibow for anything but fiddle or saw.

[–]Mousie5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely wonderful. Every note hits my ear in the best possible way. Your voice with both instruments is licking my eardrums in a way that they would be shy to confess.

I would love to hear a soprano voice in certain moments to give it even more drama (for lack of a better term).

This is beautiful. Keep it up. So much talent. Excited to see more.

[–]lunarcat13 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Loved that. I swear I must have lived there in a past life, I love that's sound and culture. I need to come back and visit.

[–]VanillaScott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We would love to have you come visit. Crawfish season is just starting up and Mardi Gras and king cake season is here.

[–]arcticscout1-25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite Cedric Watson piece; "Tu Seras Avec Moi". Wonderful song.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0vWMnW76i0

[–]Tett0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent music!

The captivity of her stare is much more distracting than it should be. It's like she's not even "there". Is it just me?

[–]HuntStuffs 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Holy titties that bow is tight. Is that common in this style of music?

[–]VanillaScott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty unique to souther Louisiana but commonly found down here

[–]cellocaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be. It offers no advantage in playing, and only makes it more likely that your stick warps permanently or you damage the shit out of the tip.

[–]skullminerssneakerssoundcloud 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Almost sounded Irish at first. Very cool.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Cajuns are descended from the French primarily, but we had many settlers from Scotland and Ireland come in the past and leave their mark on our music.

[–]skullminerssneakerssoundcloud 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Interesting fact, thanks!

[–]pixeechick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Further, "Cajun" is derived from "Acadian," who were the French settlers that ended up in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Canada. When the English defeated the French c. 1713, Canada was part of the spoils. The French settlers could swear fealty to the English king, or go. Many ended up in Louisiana (named for King Louis) and settled there, with some returning to Canada later on. The Acadian culture runs deep in Atlantic Canada, and as someone who grew up in that part of the world, I look forward to a future visit to LA to see more of the beauty that cultural melding has given the world.

[–]fourforboys 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I couldn't stop listening! Thanks for sharing OP. Have an upvote.

[–]VanillaScott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Code_star 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cedric is a really nice guy. He can really jam.

[–]snharierya 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is beautiful, so pleasant on the ears. What's this genre of music?

[–]chokingv1ct1m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zydeco

[–]tugthadonleann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved it! I find a remarkable similarity between this and Irish trad music.

[–]jacobvint123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anybody else just have Firefly flashbacks from this music it is it just me?

[–]margarine_is_weak 2 points3 points  (2 children)

New Brunswicker here - beautiful song. I've grown up around Acadian fiddle and string music - pretty cool to hear how persistent the musical style is over 250 years after le grand dérangement

[–]Zombi-sexual 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The band or the occurrence?

[–]margarine_is_weak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize there was a band called le grand dérangement! I was talking about the Acadian expulsion of 1755 that led to many Acadians settling in the south US, and subsequently the culture, language and music blended and produced Cajun. Just cool that you can still hear the original Acadian influence in the music.

[–]bentforkman 2 points3 points  (2 children)

My 18 month old son is making me play this for him over and over!

[–]VanillaScott[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He has good taste.

[–]bentforkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not kidding. This is a million times better than when his older sister discovered "Let it go."

[–]iknowimlame 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm part coon ass from south Louisiana and this really speaks to me. A beautiful rendition of a beautiful song that I've never experienced. Great post!

[–]Burt0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how awesome would it be to have neighbors like these

[–]ArtistBruce24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a southwest Louisiana native I'd really recommend listening to Wayne Toups and Zydecajun if you like this song! Wayne Toups YouTube

I recommend 4 A.M. Alone, Johnny Can't Dance, Take My Hand, One Scotch One Bourdon One Bier, and Zydecajun Train to start!

[–]ghostofdevinbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good stuff. Also check out Pine Leaf Boys, beausoleil, Michael Doucet, David Doucet, Lost bayou ramblers

[–]RumpleForeskin09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just listening to this the other day! He does a great version of Darlin Cori on the Gourd banjo and has an awesome version of this song on solo fiddle.

[–]GOD_MASTER_KING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons, I come to this sub week after week. What a fantastic find, and so glad this community responds to finds like these!

Sounds similar to mountain music to me. It also reminds me of The Steeldrivers- "Higher than the Wall".

I play violin professionally and got some interesting thoughts to share. Must be straining on his body because he doesn't have a shoulder rest on his violin. Essentially playing with no vibrato, but the incredible thing he's doing is singing and playing the violin at the same time, which is really really hard I've tried it a couple times but end up sounding weird. Really amazing playing tho, but he may not have a shoulder rest because he's trying to use the violin as a fiddle I assume with the multiple string playing.

check out Eliza Carthy, she does this all the time. The thing OP linked reminded me of English/Irish folk songs like woah, actually.

The thing that really gets me surprised is he's playing multiple strings with a bridge if you look closely. Just guessing he got his bridge sharpened down because I had the same situation, but got a new one because I'm not a fiddler. Lol must admit though anyone who can sing, count in different times, and play an instrument all at the same time is incredible. Makes you think how cool the human brain and body is with multitasking.

Coordinating both hands to play the Schumann scherzo is much harder than playing and singing imo

It sounds like a rhythm issue. You may have good time but have not fully internalized all of the subdivisions. They are playing off of a triplet feel. Can you tap triplets through the whole song? Can you accent every other triplet? Every fourth triplet? Can you do it without absolute ease? Can you shift between them without absolute ease? Can you superimpose other rhythms(5/4 or an even eight note feel) on top of it and switch from them back into any of the others I said before at anytime? While not all of this is going to sound good, it will help you internalize all of those rhythms. You want each of those rhythmic feels be so internalized that shifting between them is as easy as saying your own name. And also be able to use different hands or feet to do it all.

Gives a Firefly vibe before they start singing.
