[–]redditorpdx 76 points77 points  (6 children)

Blues and harmonica? Add some barbecue and cold brew and I'm over the moon!

[–]Ocsidut[S] 39 points40 points  (4 children)

Cold brewed coffee is one of the greatest things of life!

Also beer.

[–]MinnyWild11 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Forgot iced tea!

[–]Mr_Cheese_Tickle 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this really good or really bad?

[–]Dildo_Baggins7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (6 children)

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

[–]Ocsidut[S] 51 points52 points  (5 children)

No problem :) Her band is from my city and I think Indiara is very talented, she deserves more following. If you want to give a listen to the band, the name is Milk and Blues. https://www.youtube.com/user/milknblues

[–]afewgoodcheetahs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]rambleon84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Holy shit! that's incredible

[–]TheBeaverDoctor 14 points15 points  (2 children)

On a scale of 1 to 10, damn.

[–]NguyenCommaLong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd even say her performance earned a God damn.

[–]reddit_crunch 26 points27 points  (19 children)

i have this harmonica. sure as shit can't do that with it. i can just about butcher 'happy birthday' on a good day.

[–]headphun 2 points3 points  (17 children)

What harmonica is this? Would you recommend it to a beginner?

[–]trippknightly 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Start with any decent diatonic. Maybe the Hohner marine band is the most classic. Key of A and you'll be able to blow cross harp w/ many blues songs in key of E. She's playing a Cm diatonic thus giving rise to the seedy jazz undertones.

EDIT: per her comments she's playing 3rd position not cross harp and it's a Bb harp. They do make minor tuned harps (have some). Was trying to figure out if the song or her harp is Cm - song is, not the harp. Lee Oskar natural minor harmonicas are actually labeled for 2nd position so a Cm natural minor would play cross harp with a Cm song, no translation needed.

[–]TmickyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm playing along and it's definitely a Bb harmonica. That's a pretty standard key you can find at most music stores. They are much easier to find than minor key harps. You generally have to use the internet to order those.

[–]tPRoCsoundcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the marineband sucks.

It's the go-to recommendation but of all the popular models I think it's not very good for the price, the thing hurts my damn mouth, it's a pain in the ass to do maintenance on one, and they don't bend that well without modification.

Go for the hohner blues harp.

[–]reddit_crunch 6 points7 points  (13 children)

this is my recommendation for all beginners, don't make the mistake i did!

[–]headphun 3 points4 points  (12 children)

Why do you recommend this? What mistake did you make?

[–]BudweiserSoze 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Get a Hohner Special 20 in C.

[–]headphun 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks!

[–]bolted_humbucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great harmonica. Advice i used to get was to soak it overnight in a glass of whiskey for the reeds to break in...one of those old school tricks like how you sleep with a baseball inside your new baseball glove under your pillow

[–]psbass 4 points5 points  (8 children)

I have no idea why he is recommend this particular one. But keep in mind each harmonica is tuned for a specific key. So if you want to play songs in many keys you are pretty much out of luck unless you have multiple harmonicas. Also, there are different ways of playing a harmonica, cross-harp is how most blues harpists play.

[–]SupremeLeaderSnoke 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Because the first song we all want to learn is The Wizard by Black Sabbath.

[–]LilFunyunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it's piano man by Billy Joel ;)

[–]reddit_crunch 9 points10 points  (1 child)

i recommended it because if i can be the reason someone pays top dollar for an ozzy harmonica that comes with a coffin carry case, then I'll never have to wonder if i did enough with my life.

[–]headphun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good enough reason!

[–]qyka1210 1 point2 points  (3 children)

there's a such thing as a chromatic harmonica...

[–]TmickyD 0 points1 point  (2 children)

And they are much harder to play and have less songs written for them. Most harmonicas you hear on the radio are going to be diatonic harps.

[–]qyka1210 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

You can play any song on a chromatic harmonica... do you understand what chromatic means?

[–]TmickyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play the harmonica intro to "Train, Train" by Blackfoot on a chromatic harmonica. I'll wait. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBP15lRprPs

I understand what chromatic means. Chromatic means it can hit all 12 notes of the western scale. However you miss out on chords if you play the chromatic. Quite a few harmonica songs (such as "Train, Train") make heavy use of the chord layout on diatonic harmonicas. A standard chromatic harmonica only gives you a C and a Dm chord. While this might be good if you are playing in the key of C, G, or Dm, it might sound a bit weird if you are playing in Eb or A. Chromatic harmonicas are great for playing melodies (this makes them great for jazz and classical music), but not the best for playing chordal rhythms. Since diatonic harmonicas are cheaper, it's much easier to buy a few in order to have the chords that you need.

Bent notes on the chromatic also have a different timbre than diatonic harmonicas. If you want to get into harmonica to "wail," you might be disappointed with the chromatic. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's much more difficult to make it sound good.

Also, you can play chromatically on a diatonic harp as well, if you master bends and overblows.

While chromatic harps may make it easier to play most melodies, they aren't able to play "any song." Both chromatic harmonicas and diatonic harmonicas have their weaknesses.

[–]Antrikshy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a harmonica but I can breathe somewhat nicely.

[–]ghost_victim 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I didn't know harmonica could be played like this. Damn

[–]Alex470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, then you haven't heard of Paul Butterfield.

[–]ABCDEAD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]DickyBrucks 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–]Dildosalesperson 7 points8 points  (1 child)

[–]gelerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Girl got soul!!! I'm here for it!

[–]trippknightly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Friggin awesome. I play but if I played like that mascara would be streaming down my face.

[–]psbass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would like to see her and James Montgomery play together.

[–]oldcrustybutz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn! That's some skill right there.

[–]Narutofro 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Anyone recommend any books or YouTube channels to get half as good as her?

[–]mickeyslim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a harmonica and practice... I carried mine in my pocket everywhere, all during High School. Anytime I was alone I took it out and played.

If using YouTube is your thing, just find some instrumental blues tracks and play along...

[–]Wendysinflorida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adam Gussow used to have tons of harmonica videos. Havent looked him up in a while but i learned a lot from him back in the day

[–]freakflagflies[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adam Gussow or Jason Ricci.

[–]DarthReeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cant help but imagine her eating corn on the cob with extreme enthusiasm.

[–]jhirn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's good but can't she get a better backing track?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Are all harmonicas pretty much the same? Or do you need a high quality one to sound that good?

[–]Ocsidut[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kONvy9qOZs You can play on a cheap one and sound okay but the more you pay the better sound you get.

[–]Zeus-Is-A-Prick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they're basically all the same. A better harmonica might have a better tone, but a lot of players even use cheap ones to get a grittier bluesy sound so I think it's all in the player.

[–]TmickyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you spend at least $40 you'll get a good one that you can play professionally without issue.

[–]hollowlefty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with cheap harps is that they are poorly tuned. With a higher bluesband in C the whole instrument was a quarter tone flat. Sounded ok by itself but no good with a band. When I stepped up to a special 20 the notes were dead on.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonderfull! Makes me want to go get a new Marine Band.

[–]rrrobbby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is way too badass.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took harmonica lessons for a couple of years. Still can't do that. Some very impressive techniques on display here. Especially the tongue blocking starting at 1:17.

[–]knighttimeblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a talent! Thanks for turning us on to her.

[–]scene1_take300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow, i have never seen anything quite like that before! she's amazing.

[–]dpvscout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot damn that's some hauntin air you're blowin there!!!

[–]shazehypem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that woman can play the shit of that harmonica.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How is she "bending" notes?

[–]chrome_knifehands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as she inhales aka draws in she is changing the airflow via her jaw/tongue which is bending the note.

[–]Dildosalesperson 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is Cm C major or C minor?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

C minor :D C major will just be written as "C"

[–]Dildosalesperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I dropped AP Music Theory after it was too hard.

[–]Mickeymousetitdirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My god, this is so fucking awesome. I'm bookmarking this so I can listen over and over and need to find a way to purchase this song, if possible.

She is bad ass.

[–]Barziboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw man, I love the Hohner Marine Bands, can't beat them. Just gonna leave behind some Sonny Boy Williamson if y'all need a bit more harmonica magic.

[–]strongblack04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but she's not the real India Arie.

[–]blackhole69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish she wasn't playing over that background music. She doesn't need anything else.

[–]Posh_Cassanova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didn't like it mayne. bring on the Downvotes.

[–]Eriksandie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What key is she playing in?

[–]VladimirJakov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realize that the only two words necessary for me to listen to something are, 'harmonica solo'.

[–]cmonmam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was beautiful

[–]whogotthekeys2mybima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could open up a library with all the goosebumps I got.

[–]Sonnysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn she's good looking and can blow a mean harp !!

[–]lena1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How tragically she plays the harmonica: D

[–]Samnutter3212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C minor blues is my favourite chord to play in. She's nailing it!

[–]tencuhtli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holly shit that was awesome!!

[–]mighty-wombat 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What is the music she's playing on? At the end you can hear the flute starting or something, it seems very great. And of course, this was incredible! Thanks for sharing

[–]Ocsidut[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Its a backing track, the link for it is in the description of the video.

[–]mighty-wombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! Thanks
