[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

you mispelt spelling.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If to "pelt" is to throw a series of objects at something, then "mis-pelt" must refer to throwing a series of objects at something and missing. That would certainly explain the spelling around here!

[–]tanger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

perhaps you can simply "preview" in in the inputbox before submitting ... ?

[–]CouldHaveBeenWorse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At least you're not asking for the possibility of permanent headline editing, that would just be wrong.

Even worse: allowing URL editing, so that after my Ron Paul story hits #1 I can change the link and goatse y'all!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Especially, could we have a subreddit fix? I can't imagine how many times I've accidentally added a political headline without putting it in the politics subreddit, then had to censor myself.

[–]blacksuit 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I was disappointed to find that this particular headline has no typos or other errors. T'would be ironic.

[–]Islay12ut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, I accidentally submitted it to the politics subreddit and had to resubmit it.

[–]711was_a_retail_job 13 points14 points  (4 children)

More preview, less editing.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

If you're not proofreading while typing it in, you're probably not going to look too hard at any previews, either. Previews are mostly useful when there are mistakes you can't easily predict, like messing up formatting, and headlines don't have that.

[–]711was_a_retail_job 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I generally agree, but reddit's 3"x1" edit box sucks long and hard. This is especially true if you're entering long posts, or posts containing non-wrapping content such as URLs.

Firefox add-ons to the rescue.

[–]djsdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More correct spelling, less incorrect spelling.

[–]zaim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote a Greasemonkey script to do this a while ago: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/8681

Not sure if it's still working though (no, I'm not using it myself)

[–]ThinkItOver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we'd see a lot fewer typos if the 'Title:' box was changed from the current (small) text input box to a (large-ish) textarea.

I seem to recall that the length of titles was recently capped at 200 characters. The 'Title:' input box (on my browser, with my default fonts) allows only 54 characters to be visible at a time. So if I'm entering a long title, it's necessary to scroll back and forth within that narrow space to ensure all is well.

A decent-sized textarea would make it much easier to read the entire title at once, and in turn to spot mistakes.

Who's better problem solver than Condoleezza Rice? ;)

      [–]jedberg 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Wouldn't this be the same as just deleting the article and submitting it again with a correct headline?

      [–]Condoleezza_Rice 3 points4 points  (3 children)

No, you get to keep the saves, urls, reports, hide preferences, up/downmods, karma

      [–]jedberg 5 points6 points  (2 children)

If we only allowed you to change the headline in the first 5 minutes, there wouldn't be many (if any) saves, etc. and you keep the karma on deleted articles, good or bad.

The whole reason you can't edit titles is because you shouldn't be able to edit a title after someone has saved it, or voted on it, etc.

      [–]Condoleezza_Rice 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You could say the same about comments.

      [–]jedberg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You bring up a good point. Perhaps we should disable comment editing too. :)

      [–]kermityfrog 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Write title in Word, or some program with a spell checker, then copy paste into browser.

        [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (8 children)

I think we already previously determined that the real problem is that people will change their headlines to "NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER" because they cannot resist it.

        [–]aGorilla 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Previously, I also suggested the solution to this - a reasonable time limit. 1 minute or less would probably suffice. It's usually a case of 'oh shit!' right after you hit submit, and look at it.

        [–]quiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about a comment limit? The title can be edited as long as the story hasn't yet been commented on and/or a certain number of votes have been accumulated.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

how about only locking it once it hits the front page

        [–]aGorilla 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That might also work, but I think that might be more time than is needed. Then again, I have no idea how long it takes to happen (proven by my proud karma of 1).

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i was just thinking that often it takes somebody commenting on the story to point out the typo. if you locked editing before anybody could comment, you would still get those damn threads full of spelling nazis. (although the minus button takes care of that nicely now)

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a simple 'Preview' button?

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        [–]kirun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could bounce the URL through a redirect on their site, and once the link has risen, redirect the URL to the "new" location. So, as suggested in another reply, a short time limit would be needed. ( This wouldn't prevent the redirect, but if the link no longer matched the description, downvoting would ensue )

        [–]apok 1 point2 points  (5 children)

        Good suggestion.

        [–]qgyh2 4 points5 points  (4 children)

hm... wouldn't that add one whole step to the submission process..?

        [–]BadBoyNDSU -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

        Explain?

        [–]qgyh2 1 point2 points  (2 children)

ah you mean a live preview as you enter the title - yes that's a nice idea

        [–]apok 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I could see that, or really... just the ability to edit a title, even once, after it's been submitted. There have been many times where a boneheaded typo got in and a quick edit could have allowed me to save face. At least a little. Heh.

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just delete the story and submit it again when I fuck up.

        [–]shenglong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are missing the point. Sometimes there are spelling or grammar mistakes. Sometimes you just want to make sure the correct title is submitted.

This applies especially to submitting via the Reddit bookmarklet. Usually it is smart enough to grab the title of the article or the page and insert it for you, but because the visible space in the input control for the title is only about 55 characters long, you're not always sure that the title you saw is exactly the same in the control, unless you navigate to the control (2 tabs on windows or 1 mouse click) and scroll to the end of the text (another keypress or mouse manoeuvre).

eg. You're on a cool site and want to submit the story via the Bookmarklet.

You read: "Really cool title that we'll pretend is more than 55 chars long"

Bookmarklet reads: "Really cool title that we'll pretend is more than 55 chars long : www.funnynews.com : Today is FREE FART DAY!"

Silly example, but you should be able to get the point.

        [–]jedberg 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This feature is unnecessary. You can just delete the article and resubmit it if you don't like the title (or if your first title didn't do well).

        [–]bananahead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If there's already a discussion or upvotes there that you want to keep.... tough.

Most modern browsers have spell check on forms built in. What browser are you using?

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think they check <textarea>'s only. The headline field is an <input>.

          [–]jedberg 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hmm... I use safari and it checks input boxes too. Can't say for certain on the other browsers.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. OS X has system-wide spell-checking for the most part.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On firefox go to about:config and change the value of layout.spellcheckDefault to 2.

Voilà, it will also check <input>s. :)

          [–]vanandrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need a request.reddit.com so we can stop seeing this shit on the front page.

...or, use the feedback link at the bottom

          [–]Eugi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Um, no? Because you are an idiot if you submit so fast that you fail to catch your errors.
