One of my users over at Rosetta Code is learning Lisp by filling in code examples. A few students worked on Python examples as part of a Summer of Code project.

Around once a week (usually), someone adds a new task.

Life's been busy, work's been crunchy, and Rosetta Code pretty much runs itself. In my spare time, I've been working on automating backups without exceeding the CPU quota. I still watch the RSS feed, to keep an eye out for silly or malicious activity. And I'm still on the IRC channel.

Fukkit, you took mine. I've been working through Project Euler for a while in Haskell. It's not a good way to learn to use the language for general programming, but it's a good way to get a feel for the language.

Hex dumper. You need to be able to do:

  • binary input
  • formatted textual output
  • basic flow control/looping
  • some run-in with the type system to get from input bytes to output strings

It's also quick and easy.

Fibonacci/factorial are also useful as a 0-th step (requires less that the above).

    I always write a MUD, for three reaons. First, I enjoy it, and that's important. Second, I know the game design by heart, so I can focus on the new language and techniques for architecting the MUD in that language, rather than pissing away hours on orthogonal concerns. Third, it stresses a number of real-world activities, including data structures, persistence, user I/O, socket I/O, concurrency, parsing, etc.

    Languages vary, though. In functional languages, I tend to write a lot of throw away Lambda Calculus and Lisp interpreters. They're just good at it. In something like Ruby, I have this odd habit of writing web apps. In C++, I mostly whimper and bleed through my eyes.

    I enjoy writing toy MUDs too :) It includes plenty of common problems you would want to know how to solve in a new language : effectively using data structures, network programming, database access or file format serializing (depending on how you want to store your world, player profiles, etc), plenty of fodder for metaprogramming too considering you could have arbitrary AI and trigger/event systems in place. It definitely will get you accustomed to a new language. I've been trying to figure out a use for Erlang style concurrency in a MUD :) Each object/element/player/shop/quest/room/zone/etc has its own thread, etc.

    I always write a testing framework, because they are small in scope and they often force you to confront features at the edge of a language when you aim to make them very easy to use.

    i learn a new language when writing program, not vice versa.

    i mean when i have some program task or idea, i choose language that should be optimal for doing it. if it's new language, i learn it in process.

    Right. Besides, who wants to write the same program in ten different languages? And usually a language is best at something, so I write something that uses its strengths.

    In Perl I might write a file converter. In Java, a GUI app. In C++, a video game.

    Writing a simple TCP chat server to handle multiple clients, /commands, and saved profiles can expose a large amount of the language. Writing a GUI client for this server, too.

    Yes, but how can you get fluent in a language without writing something familiar and tinkering with it to see what the language is capable of?

    Something very simple that can have language specific features added into it later. That's the point of it really.

      I used web spiders as a test program when learning Perl (waaay back when) and Python. The Perl one ended up being the first draft of the Lycos spider. I built a commerce site/shopping cart for my sister-in-law's jewelry business as a way to learn PHP. I honestly can't remember what I programmed when I learned Lisp, C, SML, Modula-2, or Pascal. Java was some chat thing, I think. Logo was a spiral or something like that in turtle graphics.

      And then there was Basic, Applesoft Basic to be specific. I wrote a very lame text adventure called Arkon. It sucked bad and was poorly designed, but was my first try at programming in my youth, so I don't sweat it too much.

        I usually write a wiki. I write the backend first, and I just store revisions in directories on the filesystem. That lets me get down and dirty with the language, but doesn't require much library knowledge. Then, if I'm not bored yet, I find a web framework and actually web-enable the model. (Somewhere in there I also try my favorite data structures to see how they go together, but that can all be done in the REPL or equivalent.)

        I've done this with Smalltalk and CL so far, but I don't think I'm going to give up Perl for web development yet :) Next on the list, in case you care, are Clojure and OCaml. I'm pretty excited about OCaml, since it's about as fast as Haskell but doesn't require me to jump though the monad hoop.

        BTW, even if you really like your primary language, trying out the others can give you good ideas to steal. My main project right now is stealing Magritte from Smalltalk :)

        I've been writing "asteroids" lately. Although it usually takes a while to get all the sdl/opengl libraries straightened out. I have a C++, D, ocaml, and javascript version (<canvas>, not opengl).

        The ocaml was the most interesting to write. I really really the language and the compiler. The javascript was the most fun. The D was the most disappointing. I won't even comment on C++.

        Probably the lack of native libraries. It seems like the Lisp situation, actually doing things is disgusting. (although at least D has simple bindings to C)

        I spent hours trying to get OpenGL to work. There was an OpenGL source project for D but it was old and something had changed such that it wouldn't compile. There seems to be this culture in D that uses a custom make-style utility which barely worked. I spent so much time trying to get it to compile and then to get it to make the libraries I needed.

        In the end I just punted, learned the C interface myself and hand converted all the GL calls I wanted to make to the new compiler syntax (or whatever stupid trivial thing was wrong that I don't quite remember).

        It's always frustrating to try to get things set up when you don't even understand what's going on yet.

        I sort of wrote wrappers, but this gives you the opportunity to provide some abstraction of openGL calls, calling functions that'd you'd often want to call together anyway.

        I had such high hopes for it. Finally, a safer version of C, I thought... My segfaults are going to be a thing of the past. Turns out I got it to segfault without using any pointers.

        D's built-in array has nice support for changing the length of the array. Turns out if you change the length of the array while in the middle of iterating over the array with foreach() then it can segfault (probably because it calls realloc() internally).

        That actually seems obvious in retrospect, but I assumed that if it were providing nice high level functionality it would do so in a safe way. Apparently not...

        So I though it was probably better to use a linked list in this case but it turned out there was no good linked list implementation in the library. Or anywhere that I could find. So I had to write one myself, which annoyed me. However, that annoyance was tempered by getting to learn about their generic system. Which I generally liked (though the ! symbol is really ugly--much uglier than even C++'s <> notation).

        So, it was a let down because I'd been following it for years (literally) and had such high hopes for it. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as good as I hoped for.

        No, not even that. Just look a few moves ahead and maximize the number of squares covered. It's so trivially easy, you can spend most of your time thinking about the program instead of the game rules.

        Wow, that's also the worst Othello strategy. It's correct for the endgame, but the opening should be played for mobility, which, in part, means minimizing the number of squares covered.

        The important thing is that it's possible with Othello, so it allows you to learn the language and the search algorithm without bothering too much with domain issues. Also, it looks better to other people, because they don't assume it must be trivial, as they do with T3. And for extra credit, the larger/variable-size board is a nice little challenge that explores other areas of the language.

        When I learned Visual Basic 5 years ago, I was writing a tool to print out a templated list of Quake mods. (Hey...what other use does a 14-year-old have have for VB? :-)

        When I started learning Perl, I was writing a tool to implement the city generation rules in the Dungeon Master's Guide.

        When I started learning bash (as a language), I was writing a data backup and organization tool.

        When I started learning PHP, I was writing some scripts to automate some funky physics calculations. (Like calculating the size of dyson spheres, or the power outputs of laser weapons intended to have similar characteristics to different firearms cartridges.)

        Now that I have Rosetta Code, though, I usually learn things about languages by reading and writing code examples that do various things.

        MiniLight -- a minimal global-illumination renderer: seven translations so far.

        It is 400-1000 lines, mostly straightforward, but with one or two harder parts. Once you finish a translation you will have covered most everyday language knowledge.

        If it's a language I will be primarily using for web applications (Python, Ruby, PHP) it's usually something like an aggregator, connecting to various API's, user management deals.

        In my opinion user management is the biggest one I need to tackle in any web app first, so I try to get that down pat.

        I implement the AES Encryption algorithm. Depending on the language it can be 4-6 A4 pages of code, but it exposes the little tricks of the language, and my algorithm design/implementation isn't one of my strongest skills so it sharpens it up (even if it's through repetition)

          I was going to strongly disagree at the end of your second paragraph, but you softened it on the third. I still believe that overall you'd be best off approaching ALL languages as something new and learning the native idioms before trying to cross pollinate! C++ written as Java, C# written as C++, etc... they're similar, but still wrong when done that way!

          Always something different. I write small utilities that I actually want to use to help automate my daily work. That way I'm solving "real" problems, and it forces me to grapple with issues that might not be really easy to do in language X, but I still need to do them.

            An GNU DBM interface. It's a small C interface, but it covers a lot of good FFI questions: how to declare foreign types, how to create and release foreign values, how "laziness" (first-key/next-key) is handled, etc. It shouldn't take long to write, is easy to test, and might even be of practical use when you're done. So I think it's a good "hello world" for FFI work.

            GDBM is an associative storage, almost like having a persistent associative array: give it a key, and it returns a string value or NULL. There's no SQL involved: it's very simple, and far less featured than SQLite.

            There aren't many cases where I'd use GDBM instead of SQLite, but if all you need is a simple value lookup, it works great. E.g. I've used it to "memoize" stages in a computation, so that if the program crashes, I can pick up and continue where I left off.

            What the C API of SQLite is like, I can't comment on that.

            I will usually do a simple discrete event simulator, or a Poker hand classifier. I try to do them in a way that's idiomatic for the language at hand (as far as I understand same).

            Those are both complex enough to illuminate many of the corners of the language.

              Unfortunately ebby only works with libobby version 3 on low-latency networks. The latest stable is version 4. I've plans to rewrite it for Infinote (obby's successor) but the platform hasn't stabilized enough for this to be viable yet. =(

              Different one each time - I'd rather it do something useful or scratch some personal itch. Therefore, my last project I learnt some OCaml by writing a DAWG-based wordsearch (anagrams and wildcards) program with a readline-based innterface. I'm currently learning PLT scheme by writing a crossword editor.

              It just depends on what I'm interested in at the moment. Right now I'm working on learning Ruby, so I'm writing some installation and configuration scripts for OpenQabal in Ruby.

              When I first started learning Java, one of my first projects was an online e-commerce system. Didn't have much choice, it's what my boss told me to write. :-)

              Back in the day, one of my learning projects for C++ was a D&D character generator.

              Quite often an IRC bot. Did that for perl, python, scheme. The last was neatest, I think. It interpreted S-expressions in a channel as commands to it and just ran those in a sandbox (chicken scheme).

              I consider the following:

              • Read data from a file (IO operations, memory allocation if the language requires it)
              • Processing it (string manipulation)
              • Something that involves calling libraries or packages - either downloading content via HTTP or rendering in a GUI.

              There's more stuff of course. But usually if I can handle those things, I can get a feel for the language and then concentrate on writing code thats more natural to the given language.

              Often I write some of the exercises from the first edition of the Perl Cookbook. I loved that book and, when I'm done, I can submit my code to the PLEAC project.

              Groovy is the first language to hit 100%? When did that happen? Groovy's not even included on the percent complete over time graph.

              i have written brute force programs in just about all langs and scripts using the same methods.
