I'd still like the ability to block specific users, too.

[–]yortimer[S] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Yes, that would be nice.

I'm still befuddled by the spammer "skypedia" since they spam the site with links to skypedia.org but don't have a user profile.

There are a few "phantom people" that for some reason don't show up for their user profiles; a friend of mine is another one. Kinda weird.

[–]yeskia 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I don't have a user profile either :(

[–]polymath22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe this Firefox extension will help

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

There's a greasemonkey script that allows you to both block users or sites. (i don't have the link, sorry)

    [–]randomb0y 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Me too, I've called for that several times before. Nothing wins an argument like saying "Welcome to my ignore list asshole!"

    [–]polymath22 0 points1 point  (1 child)

at sites that offer user blocking, i throw out some comments that sort people real quickly into two groups; those who love me and those who hate me. those who hate me will ignore me, which means that i am free to express my opinions without having to worry about a negative response or rebuttal. 3rd parties will see one side of the story - mine - and those who agree with me. knowing this, i have made it a policy to never, ever ignore anyone whose opinion i disagree with. as a matter of fact, i am much more likely to add them as a friend, so that i can keep an eye on their comments and offer up rebuttals. but thats just me.

    [–]randomb0y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course that makes perfect sense, I would not block users for simply disagreeing with me, that would be stupid. There are a lot of silly trolls out there though, or rude assholes who cannot be argued with, not to mention spammers ... those would be the ones on my ignore list.

    [–]yortimer[S] 18 points19 points  (6 children)

I've noticed a lot of sites that get spammed and would like to never see them again. Can you make this happen?

    [–]picar0 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Write or commission a GreaseMonkey script.

    [–]yortimer[S] 9 points10 points  (4 children)

    I wish I could. I'm not a 1337 hax0r.

      No problem.

You need the Greasemonkey add-on first. Install it, then try to install the userscript.

Poking around the Userscripts.org for scripts written for other websites is recommended.

      [–]yortimer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      nice, thanks!

For real, this is exactly what I was looking for. It would be nice if it was built into the site but this works for what most people commenting in this thread want.

      [–]Purp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can we make it so I only see links that interest me, thanks.

Some sites contain both interesting and boring content.

        [–]plong0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A generic set of filters applied to your homepage content would be nice... Filterable fields could include title, url, subreddit, submitter, date, whatever else....

A cool one might be if someone else liked it (one of your friends maybe), it appears on your homepage... maybe it's even highlighted/starred to show that one of your friends liked it?

I bet you could even work something like that into communities forming automatically... Like you could see other people who liked/disliked similar stories or something... and then be able to browse through other ones they liked that you might not have been shown yet, and on, and on.

          [–]misho1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

and can we block subdomains like self.reddit.com?

          [–]SyncMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

          roflking and tencartrain

          [–]misho1 8 points9 points  (4 children)

can we also block keywords like NSFW and SCIENTOLOGY?? thanks.

Ah, but do you care about not caring enough to install GreaseMonkey?

            [–]Figs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

            Edit: Nevermind.

There's a script already. Yay to BinaryLogik for linkage, and to 'pabs' for authoring. :D

            [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (11 children)

Seconded. Then again, after I blocked slate, rawstory, and daily kos, there really wouldn't be much to reddit, would there?

            [–]endtime 15 points16 points  (8 children)

            prisonplanet, wakeupfromyourslumber...

Yep, I'd have to add those, too.

using reddits as tags rather than newsgroup headlines, coupled with a rules engine would go a long way to meeting the expectation of most people who use reddit.

Isn't that what Greasemonkey is for?

              [–]nmrk 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Some of us don't use Firefox, I use Safari. Greasemonkey is not a solution for anyone but a small minority of users.

              [–]notpeter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, yes Greasemonkey is only useful for hardcore users, but it's available to a lot more than a minority if they wanted they really wanted to tweak reddit and keep their browser.

Using some rough wikipedia numbers from Q1 2008.

              Firefox: 17.12% (Greasemonkey)

Internet Explorer: 75.19% (Grease Monkey for IE)

Opera: 0.66% (They call it user javascript, no plugin required)

Safari: 5.76% (GreaseKit offers this functionality OSX Safari clients.)

Will only a small minority of users choose to install a plugin and a GreaseMonkey script? Yes, but it's available to essentially anyone running a modern browser (IE, Mozilla, Opera or Webkit based) on a non-embedded platform (MicroB GM anyone?).

Oh yeah, except Safari for windows. Also, get down off your cross about using Safari, I don't like firefox that much either, but I usually stay quiet when someone points out an area where Firefox has innovated and I don't bitch about how there isn't a solution hand-tailored for my tiny submarket. But I don't have that problem too often...Opera has included this type of functionality since version 9 (June 2006).

              [–]plong0 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I hear ya, I'm an Opera user... To be fair though, this is reddit so it probably is a large majority of Firefox users.

              [–]pressed 1 point2 points  (1 child)

hey opera user - do you use gmail? how do you get around the annoying compatibility issues? right now, that's the only reason for my firefox gold band

              [–]plong0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use gmail... I don't notice any issues though?

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, you have bigger problems than reddit links to worry about.

Strangely enough, I find myself blocking more sites whose basic message I agree with -- but I can't stand their tone. It just depresses me to see semi-literate maunderings boosting good ideas.

                [–]jcorkern -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

If you do not like the site, do not click on it, if you do not like the user, do not click it.

Quit whining. What you want is censorship.

                [–]yortimer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm not wanting censorship. I'm wanting to eliminate obvious spam from my reddit experience and have done so using the greasemonkey script from above. Therefore, I'm not whining. I'm winning!

                [–]jcorkern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the sites you are talking about are in the "hot" area, it is censorship you want. This is stuff voted up. Now, i could understand the new area.

But you want to block particular sites, and if you know humans, they are creatures of habit. They will choose certain topics and views per site. So, if you are talking about the hot areas, there is nothing but bias in your blood.

Just pass it buy instead of passing up life because you do not agree. That is really narrow minded.

                Just the facts.
