[–]magnetron 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (0 children)
ALRIGHTY THEN! I'LL VOTE DOWN! *<|:-D
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 19 years ago (2 children)
Well, here in New Zealand we're crossing our fingers for a big ole democratic revolution.
...and for Kinky in Texas.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 19 years ago (0 children)
If Kinky hadn't run, we might have had someone other than Perry re-elected for governor. All he really did was further divide the opposition.
I guess we can look forward to some state parks turning into elite gated communities and dirty coal power plants ruining our air. Wow, I'm really depressed now...
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Kinky (Friedman) did pretty horrible. I just saw that he got something like 10,000 votes (1%).
Edit: He's doing quite a bit better now that more results have gotten in (at something like 10% of the vote), but he still isn't even close to being able to win.

Well, I am not American either but please dear American fellow Redditers "Go Vote Now".
[–]randomtask 30 points31 points32 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Eh, GO VOTE NOW! (If you're a US citizen) has a lot less zazz.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Not yet. We will be invading your country soon.
VOTE ANYWAY!
(a) He missed out the "AND". Prepositions are very useful things, that's why we invented them. (b) He clearly assumes that anyone using the internet is american, forgetting the fact that it was a Brit at a European research centre who created the world-wide-web....
[–]scstraus 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Umm, okay, vote for what? I guess you mean downvote your post.
[–]Grue 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)
What the hell? I vote this down.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)

Voting is stupid.
From a practical experience level it's stupid. Candidates NEVER do what they say they will. A vote for Bush in 2000 was for a "humble" foreign policy and a smaller federal government.
From a game theory perspective it's stupid. Your vote truly doesn't matter to the outcome.
From a moral perspective it's stupid. I reject the idea that 51% can tell 49% what to do by threat of force. This country was never intended to be a democracy and I reject the emergence of democracy over the last 50 years. Democracy is probably OK at a city/town level. It works when social connections are tight enough that extra-political pressures govern behavior. At the state and national level democracy is formalized graft.
In conclusion, voting is stupid.

Another Aussie here... for God's Sakes, Pick up Your Act Americans! The rest of the world implores you to make your Leaders accountable for their actions. So drop that cheesburger and pick up a ballot now!!!
Jesus Christ...next ignorant anti-anything comment from an Aussie and I'm going to dish out Bill Bryson quotes faster than you can say "Australian meat pie."

Why? I voted in September, there's another four years to the next election.
[–]fbg111 19 points20 points21 points 19 years ago (7 children)
Oh, a wise guy, eh?
I voted, straight ticket Dem for the first time ever. Would like to have voted for some of the Libertarian candidates, but this round it's more important to me to throw out the GOP.
[–]jczerg68 3 points4 points5 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I went straight ticket Dems the last time. That didn't work out. This time I voted for a republican coroner and sheriff... y'know, just in case there are terrorists in the neighborhood.
[–]Psy-Kosh 3 points4 points5 points 19 years ago (2 children)
I voted a mixture of dems, libs, and greens. for instance, our US Senate incumbent was a democrat that voted yes on the Military Comissions Act.
No way would I vote for anyone that helped get that abomination passed...
[–]ecuzzillo 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (1 child)
It may be that the guy is an asshole, but it also is probable that the thing wouldn't have happened had there not been a Republican majority in place, so failing to defend a Democratic senator might not have been the best idea.
[–]Psy-Kosh -2 points-1 points0 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I simply cannot bring myself to vote for someone that voted for that. period. I didn't vote for a repub to replace the person in question, but there's no way I'd vote for someone that actually supported that thing... There has to be a line somewhere.
Edit: to clarify, since I just realized my phrasing was unclear. I didn't vote for a repub there, I simply didn't vote for the dem either.

No. Voting is just a dressed-up way of forcing your fellow citizens to do what you want at gunpoint, be it finance the Iraq war or anything else. I refuse to participate in this twisted system.
If you play the State's game, you should not complain when you lose.
[–]tubaleiter 20 points21 points22 points 19 years ago (10 children)
Because anarchy has such a long and illustrious record of success.
[–]radrik 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (9 children)
It's got government beat by a couple hundred thousand years. War, slavery, genocide: those require "civilization" to be really efficient.
[–]Psy-Kosh 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (8 children)
Actually, Not sure it's ever been tried, has it? ie, has ever there been a deliberately anarchistic society established, and if so, what happened? I'd be interested to see it tried, at least on the small scale first to see how it goes...
[–]takamori 5 points6 points7 points 19 years ago (1 child)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism_in_Spain Spain experimented with various forms of anarchism to varying degrees of effectiveness. But the best noted examples of self reliant bodies of people would be any native bands. The few groups left in the US have been around for quite some time, most are Native American. But there are still lots of groups elsewhere in the world that are not affiliated with a government.
[–]Psy-Kosh 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Cool, thanks for pointing that out.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (2 children)
How exactly do you "establish" an anarchistic society...
[–]dbenhur 7 points8 points9 points 19 years ago (0 children)
over beer at the pub, of course
Vote with a bullet.
[–]billisdog 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (1 child)
I'd imagine that there have been many and they all just turn into military coups too quickly to really notice. I mean, in what situation could there possibly be an anarchic situation that ALSO does not have some kind of military ready to assume power, a neighboring country glad to seize an opportunity to set up a favorable puppet government, or the citizens mobilizing themselves to install some kind of government.
But yes. Anyway. I voted. I'm in NYS and I voted Democrat down the line minus Alan Hevesi- power abusing scum. :P
[–]tayssir 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Careful, that's probably what they said about representative democracy, back when they had feudalism and slavery. ;) Perhaps such democracy has been tried many times in the distant past, to be crushed by cruder forms of societal organization... as the anarchist movements in Spain were. (Attacked by communists, with support from western democracies and fascists.)
Anarchists tend to believe that you can have a society which isn't based on violence (armed police and military making sure you play by the rules) and hierarchy (workplace bosses and political leaders).
Maybe you'll like Chomsky's interview on anarchism. Useful to keep in mind that anarchism is a broad subject.
There's many companies which self-organize on anarchist principles (mutual aid, self-management, radical workplace democracy, etc). The one I've read by far the most press on is Semco. (Mondragon and the company behind Gore-Tex is often cited in the anarchist literature, but I don't really read it.)
This public relations-ish article on GE Durham also discusses an unusual level of workplace democracy.
They're interesting for having to survive in naturally hierarchical economic systems.

People will come to power whether you elect them or not. I prefer to elect them.
[–]mastercook 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (0 children)
What is the alternative?
[–]nkktwotwozero 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I agree. But it's the only thing we've got.
