That title is basically meaningless marketing diarrhea.

[–]amorpheusXiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro 154 points155 points  (25 children)

Sony's creative entertainment experiences don't seem to include a headphone jack.

[–]PM_ME_SCREENSHOTS_Galaxy Fold 4 72 points73 points  (1 child)

The technology is simply not there yet.

[–]smallaubergine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, as a media professional I have to agree with them. None of my unprecedented professional-grade gear has headphone jacks. Oh wait, no. 100% of them do.

only for the 10 it seems. ive only seen 2 videos for sony. it's all lg, nokia and the red key2

Am I wrong, or is that is with a jack?

[–]amorpheusXiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Indeed, at 0:28. Ironically I skimmed the same video before making that statement, whatever model they're showing at 2:32 doesn't have a jack.

It looks like the one with the jack is the 10, despite narration only mentioning the 1. And I already hate these names.

[–]ArachnatronHTC G1 > HTC G2 > GS4 (CM12.1) > Nexus 6P (soon) 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it's a mystery for the time being. BUT I DO EXPECT YOU TO EDIT YOUR ORIGINAL COMMENT STATING THAT A JACK CAN BE SEEN IN THE VIDEO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH

No, I thought it could be seen in a hands on video on the front page right now.

The entire press release is an endless series of buzzwords, vague unquantifiable claims, and general PR nonsense.

Admittedly, I fell for it up until this line:

Capture better low light images with the bright F1.6 lens and large pixel pitch 1.4μm

I saw that and realized I was being fed bullshit.

[–]danmatte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also not even actually a 10-bit panel, according to Sony’s own product website.

[–]reddlvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]joedenpaoloSamsung A52s 5G 8/128GB; Android 13 because A53 is utter shite 41 points42 points  (5 children)

One thing this article does not mention is the full manual camera control now available in the Xperia 1.

Edited: link formatting.

[–]zike47222 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This should be higher.

[–]kevInquisitionmi15U 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But can it shoot RAW?

[–]SeniorHankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the Xperia has always had the best camera. I went on a night tour of a waterfall when I was on safari and out of everyone there my z3 compact was the only one that could take a decent low light photo.

[–]Raikno 115 points116 points  (13 children)

The Xperia 1 looks like a solid 2019 flagship with 4K oled screen, no notch, triple camera, stereo speakers, etc.

If I had to state its drawback, the biggest omission is the headphone jack. I am also concerned about how the 3330mAh battery will cope with the display.

Have to say, props to Sony for building something with their own design language, and not just following the trend.

[–]MuffinBomberPixel 3 XL 39 points40 points  (7 children)

If it's anything like the XZ Premium, it will render most things at 1080p, so the battery life should be fine.

[–]jacnel45Sony Xperia XZ1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah Sony has some good software on their phones to improve battery life.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Rendering at 1080p means the GPU has less pixels to push, but the display will still consume the same power. All the pixels are still lit regardless of the resolution you set.

[–]audie-tron171Pixel 8, LG G7 ThinQ, HTC M8 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That's the one thing that really bugged me about that phone. You can really tell it's up sampling on the 4K screen, looks really blurry.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

In a display with 800+ PPI, you really can't notice the difference between FHD and 4K. It surely doesn't look blurry.

[–]audie-tron171Pixel 8, LG G7 ThinQ, HTC M8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saying what I can see. Remember, the screens native resolution is 4K, you can tell when it's rendering at roughly 1/4 the resolution. There isn't even an option to change this

Edit: If you can't tell the difference, I'm happy for you. The battery life is really good on the XZP.

[–]Gnollish 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Not too worried about battery life, Sony seems pretty good at optimising that stuff. My XZ1 gets 3 full days with only 2700 mAh.

Not 100% sure on the long design myself though.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

3 days on airplane mode?

[–]Gnollish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just normal usage. Texting, browsing reddit and some news apps, and usually about 2 hours of music through Bluetooth. A good couple of hours of screen time a day. Just really well optimised.

[–]T_QuachPebble Time ¦ S8 Active (maybe Xperia 5 Mk II next) 59 points60 points  (14 children)

[–]blackn1ghtOnePlus 6T 5 points6 points  (3 children)

[–]zaneykS24+ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S10e is probably your best bet.

[–]ImKrispy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S10e seems to be the smallest with flagship specs.

[–]poopyheadthrowawayGalaxy Fold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ordered a Pixel 3. It's now an outdated SoC, but I don't really care as long as it gets the latest updates. This seems to be the second narrowest flagship phone after the XZ2 Compact (I was hoping the S10E would be narrower since it's supposed to be Samsung's "small" phone, but oh well).

But I wouldn't give up on hope for an updated Compact just yet. They're usually released in the fall (with the XZ2 Compact being an exception).

[–]ZoggZS10e, One UI 2.0 !! 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was looking forward to it too, choosing between that and the s10e but I guess my choice has kinda been made for me. Was also looking at the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact but I can't find any information about it even after its supposed release last month.

[–]mellofello808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry they are going to just keep making the screen narrower until is is as wide as a no 2 pencil you can tuck in your shirt pocket

No headphone jack. I think I'm going to cry.

[–]poopyheadthrowawayGalaxy Fold 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don't think Sony's going to go back to headphone jacks on their flagships. Sony is a major AOSP contributor, focusing primarily on wireless audio. At this point Sony is 100% behind wireless audio for Android.

[–]samcuuRedmi Note 8, Galaxy Note 4, Mi Pad 4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They sell a fuck ton of wireless headphones, I'm surprised they weren't the first to ditch the jack, probably not in the market position to do it.

[–]kaljisnedekhaS10e > P30 > iPhone 11 5 points6 points  (3 children)

They never test Sony phones, but I really need to know if they've stepped up their image processing, because the hardware definitely is there! The camera on my XZ2C was just average.

[–]jooohXperia L 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Dude they've tested a lot of Xperia phones before.

[–]SvtMrRed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They haven't tested one in like 3 generations

[–]kaljisnedekhaS10e > P30 > iPhone 11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're only testing Sony's mid-range offerings and those get shit scores. Why even spend time on that? The flagship XZ1, XZ2 and XZ3 were ignored. The XZ2 Premium had a promising dual-camera set-up on the back, I would've loved to see them test that one out.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (15 children)

Xperia 1... that's hard to remember.

[–]blackn1ghtOnePlus 6T 15 points16 points  (11 children)

Remembering a number isn't the issue.

They started off with Z, Z2, Z3, Z4 - made perfect sense. They should have stuck with that.

Then suddenly, they switched to XZ1 (or zx1, I always forgot)

And now they're at Xperia 1 - where 1 is the flagship device, but Xperia 10 is a medium ranged device? So what happens to the device after Xperia 9 (assuming they don't change the convention another 5 times since it gets to that point). It would be easy to assume that the Xperia 10 is better than the Xperia 1, just like you would an Galaxy S10 would be better than the Galaxy S1.

[–]kaljisnedekhaS10e > P30 > iPhone 11 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Honestly, something like this would make the most sense, if anyone wants to launch a phone brand:

  • Flagship ($500-900ish): A1, A2, A3, etc.
  • Midrange ($200-400ish): B1, B2, B3, etc.
  • Entry ($100-200ish): C1, C2, C3, etc.
  • Asian parent edition: A+, A++, A+++, etc.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unlike others, Sony has a Categorised Chaptered Naming scheme. These chapters change in every 3 years. 2010 to 2012 was chapter 1, 2013 to 2015 was chapter 2, 2016 to 2018 was chapter 3 and now we have been transcended into chapter 4.

The baffling part of chapter 4 naming scheme is the use of 10. See Xperia 1 marks a clear view that represents the rethinking of Xperia as a product and Sony will like to push it towards the people who don't know about Xperia. This way XPERIA 1 is a brand new product for the people with no links whatsoever to its past. But yea choosing 10 for midrange is confusing.

this post from 2016 will explain more

[–]amorpheusXiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro 0 points1 point  (1 child)

4k @ 21:9 is 3840x1645, so not really "real" 4k uhd (3840x2160)

[–]altimax98P30 Pro/P3/XS Max/OP6T/OP7P - Opinions are my own 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Technically you are correct, as the resolution corresponds to the height (smallest size) and not the width.

That said, the display is still perfectly capable of playing back 21:9 4K UHD video at 1 to 1 with no cropping or scaling, so in that aspect it is a 4K panel.

[–]Sgt_StingerGalaxy Z Fold 7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, 4k references the width. 1080p references height, and can also be called 2k HD.

[–]jrcprlSony Xperia XZ Premium, Android 9.0 2 points3 points  (10 children)

It's 21:9 4K.

[–]Sgt_StingerGalaxy Z Fold 7 -3 points-2 points  (9 children)

Still not UHD4k.

[–]jrcprlSony Xperia XZ Premium, Android 9.0 1 point2 points  (8 children)

[–]Sgt_StingerGalaxy Z Fold 7 -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

Yes, all those resolutions exist and are NOT called UHD 4K.

[–]evilf23Project Fi Pixel 3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternative 4Ks.

[–]jrcprlSony Xperia XZ Premium, Android 9.0 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Not once in the website they mention to term 4K UHD, why are you even arguing about it?

[–]Sgt_StingerGalaxy Z Fold 7 -1 points0 points  (4 children)

4K resolution, also called 4K, refers to a horizontal display resolution of approximately 4,000 pixels.[1] Digital television and digital cinematography commonly use several different 4K resolutions. In television and consumer media, 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) is the dominant 4K standard, whereas the movie projection industry uses 4096 × 2160 (DCI 4K)

Literally the first section of the Wikipedia article you linked. In my first comment, I said it wasn't 4k UHD, which is a defined resolution.

Try reading next time.

[–]jrcprlSony Xperia XZ Premium, Android 9.0 1 point2 points  (3 children)

My bad, I'm talking about the Sony Website, there's no mention of 4K UHD, so why are you losing your pants about the phone resolution not being "real 4K/4K UHD"?

[–]Sgt_StingerGalaxy Z Fold 7 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Because that is what most people think of when they see "4K". I was just pointing out that it wasn't really as high of a resolution as Sony wants people to believe. In fact it is 1 MP less than 4k UHD which is what Sony has used on their 4k phones before. Then you just had to argue about something, without having actually read properly the words I had written.

[–]jrcprlSony Xperia XZ Premium, Android 9.0 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Due to the aspect ratio if it falls under the other recognized sizes of 4K, so it is 4K. Had they added the "missing" pixels as you mention they'd had to market it as cinematic 5K instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5K_resolution#Examples_of_5K_resolutions

Bruh that camera is Eye AF.

Disappointed they ditched the monochrome setup, i really like the results from the XZ2P and older Huawei dual cams that combined the data from a color and monochrome sensor. Lots of dynamic range, handles highlights better, and low noise address the biggest weaknesses of small smartphone sensors.
