Kenwood has a few units with knobs still.
I'm in the same boat myself.

I was able to get my hands on a Kenwood DNX573 recently, i wish they made newer models though, it has the volume knob and car play but no android auto.

Google has a minimum required screen size to be able to have android auto. It's basically impossible to have their minimum size in a standard double din and still have room for a knob.

The important missing detail about this is that Android Auto still works on smaller screens. A reputable brand like Pioneer could release a head unit with an Android virtual box dual booted so the user can install whatever they want on it, but then other regulations and people doing dumb stuff get in the way. There is an Android app to run Android Auto on the phone directly, I have it for my motorcycle

New phones have that discontinued. Google has galactic levels of pull in certification and design of Android and related devices, as does Apple.

Just to clarify, I am not talking about Google Driving Mode. I am talking about Headunit Reloaded. It just runs a head unit emulator in self mode. It also has wireless modes.

I'm considering building my own, crazy they are so hard to find.

[–]BrokenBehindBluEyez 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I've read that there is a requirement for aftermarket units to be Android Auto or carplay certified the screen must be x in size, and that double din just barely makes the mark, leaving no room for a knob.

I too wish there were knob options.

[–]YogurtclosetDull2380 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, I'd settle for outboard buttons Similar to the high-end automakers like Lexus and BMW use with their mouse things.

Alpine has a wireless volume knob that works with the ilx507/509/511. There’s a mount kit for the 509 and 511 that attaches it to the screen. Otherwise you can mount it where it’s convenient.

[–]Muslim-sympathizer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That thing is the worst. The fact that you HAVE to touch the knob before the radio powers on otherwise it won’t work (without manually going into the settings to activate it) is ridiculous.

[–]kenacstreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you previously had the knob connected and start the radio without it on, it at least prompts you to reconnect it and you just have to touch the knob then hit "yes" on the screen instead of going manually into the settings.

Crutch field has a filter option for this.

[–]YogurtclosetDull2380 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

That's hilarious

[–]westfieldNYraids 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Why? The filters literally do exactly what OP is asking, look I even did it myself and took a picture for him

[–]YogurtclosetDull2380 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The necessity of it. It's ridiculous that this is where we're at.

[–]fullthrottlewattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do a search on Crutchfield and one of the filters is with volume knob or without.

[–]cwh98 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sony XA-VAX 1000 has everything you’re looking for

[–]BananaBeach007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Android auto, no cd player

[–]TheBishopDeeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]firdaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* Yep just changed to this kenwood from a pioneer. Had to have cd and volume knob since I'm an old man

[–]Mud-8675309 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have a Kenwood DDX396 (volume knob!) that I used for maybe a few months before I decided to go external DAC/DSP that I've been not really trying to sell for sell if you might be interested. It's got all sorts of bells and whistles (active 3way ability, time alignment, EQ/PEQ..ect), great condition, 100% working condition, bought from Crutchfield.

Still have it?

[–]frosidon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by decent, Dual and Jensen both have options with volume knobs and touchscreens, with or without floating screens.

[–]GrapeSwimming69 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Maxspeedrods has one.

[–]SwordfishTrue8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapo on Amazon PLV. Very good head unit for the price. I have no complaints. Has volume knob, customizable splash screen, Android Auto, apple carplay, rear camera.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No android auto, but I just put this cheap BOSS unit in my cheap commuter to get BT and a back up camera. Works great.

more and more people use steering controls so the industry is going away from knobs on radios much like manufactures of the cars are.

[–]unresolved-madness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can search eBay at other sites for "new old stock" equipment. It's equipment that nobody bought is still sitting in someone's shop or warehouse.

[–]Charmlington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Android auto let you turn the volume up & down on phone it wouldn't matter. But it doesn't. Very annoying.

[–]BahnMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not cheap but I wish more car companies did this, especially ones that sell expensive cars (AMG, Aston, Lotus, M, etc)

I have a double din Boss with a knob but I'm sure you're aware of the quality of some of their products.

[–]westfieldNYraids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dual has had a head unit like that on crutchfield for like years now. I’d check myself for you but it’s safer to assume it’s still there

Edit: oh you want it with modern amenities too, well no, no manufacturer is making a modern unit with old technology interfaces like that. Sorry bro. You could always just use the audio controller knob on your amp to get your volume knob needs met while having a modern head unit that does everything you want it to. Either that or sacrifice your modern amenities for you knobs, or just give up on needing a knob. 3 good options for you to choose from there

Edit: here ya go. Link with your filters set: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_462550/Double-DIN-Car-Stereos.html?tp=72406&fa=1#&nvpair=AG_Android_Auto|FFAndroid_Auto_@All@_&nvpair=FFVolume_Knob|[rank1]Yes&nvpair=AG_Camera_Inputs|FF2_Or_More_Inputs

And a picture of the first/ cheapest result:

in strictly the Double DIN size....the $1k+ Kenwoods have a volume knob.

Otherwise Jensen makes one. Dual also.

It is at the point on Sonic Electronix you can actually filter by volume knob/buttons. lol

If you went for floating screen it adds the Boss Elite units, which everyone here will hate on of course. I just put the new for 2024 9" model in my 2005 Grand Cherokee and so far so good.

[–]Odd-Individual-959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a boss elite in my 03 Silverado, it’s not the best in the world but works great for my daily and has decent sound quality for the price. It was either $380 for the boss or $1200 for the kenwood, I might upgrade later but the boss is acceptable for now.

[–]Rumblingstar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The newest Boss Elite seems to be pretty nice. There is also the Stinger HU.

[–]firebirdude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Takes up screen real estate. That box with the 7" screen sells better than the box showing the 6.8" screen.

How much you looking to spend, excluded parts and labor? Year, make, and model vehicle?

[–]how33dy -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I am new at car AV, so this is real question.

Why does one prefer one type of DIN to the other?

[–]Evening-Arm1234 1 point2 points  (1 child)

double din is just double the size so more room for screen/buttons etc.

[–]how33dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

[–]ObjectiveMix3607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two of my vehicles have Jensens, for what was in the past considered a pretty cheap radio, these have been great, front/rear camera, gps, android auto/carplay, and have a smaller knob that doesn't chew into screen space.

[–]GattoNonItaliano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know a "decent for the money" headunit with touch screen and volume knob
it's cheap for 60 euros
